An artistic collaboration between musicians Anni Hogan, Robert Strachan and Itchy Ear, film maker Bob Wass and mountaineer Cathy O'Dowd. Hogan and Itchy Ear originally worked on a series of piano pieces inspired by Rene Daumal's 'Mount Analogue' and the superior wisdom of mountains, using O'Dowds Himalayan conquests for particular authentic inspiration. Robert and Anni used these pieces and the Himalayan peaks as a template for painting a soundwave soundscape around the piano compositions. O'Dowd performed a fascinating monologue over the piece 'Deathzone'. The 'Mountain' film was created by Bob Wass from Cathy's original film footage of her Everest expeditions.

Gnaw Their Tongues transcend genres, creating their own distinct sound. Descriptors include ambient black metal, funeral doom metal, industrial drone etc. Instrumentation relies heavily on keyboards and percussion, with the drumming looming in the distance like a hideous parade before a battle is set loose. Monk-like choirs, industrial emanations, bizarre samples, occasional shrieks and droning, abused guitars are all on display, brought together almost unwillingly to share the same stage. Lyrically, L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante is a concept album about death (“morte”). Songs describe the white throne of death, address the song of death and praise death’s majesty and grandeur. For many listeners, "L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante" will be little more than noise or frustratingly dull drone. However, fans of the outré of the genre, where bands such as Sunn O))) and Throbbing Gristle practice their art, will find much to uncover and savour. "Masami Akita in collaboration with some chickens. Given his penchant for animal kingdom-themed releases in recent years, that actually makes some sort of sense. Another theme in recent Merzbow releases has been the reappearance of analogue electronics, and true to form, Higanbana finds Akita using EMS synth alongside his laptop. It's hard to tell exactly what's making the noise at any given time here, but the intensity is often pretty overwhelming. Fortunately, in amongst the fuzz and feedback you'll hear a few cleaner oscillations penetrating the mix, adding elements of colour, and avoiding the all-out overload that might have otherwise foiled the album... "Die Reise" is the third album of the east German Neofolk project Seelenthron. Seelenthron was founded by the two basic-members of the legendary Dies Natalis and on several songs on their third album they go a new way, using Folk/Epic Rock and Alternative/Independent elements. The songs on "Die Reise" are more varied than on the earlier albums, even using electric guitars and accordions. The lyrics are filled with a deep love of nature and the band's homeland Saxony, facing very personal feelings between hope and deep despair. Digipak.

What is almost immediate with the album is the strong ear for subtle melodies that the artists are so obviously gifted with. While residing more in the genre of Neofolk rather than driven martial tones the musical compositions are deft and very well structured. The keyboard adds to lushness of the acoustics and, in places, (the accordion and harmonica are also employed sparingly and appropriately in places) which may have preempted a move to more stripped-back sounds now being explored by some long established Neofolk artists." Andrew Lagowski's S.E.T.I. project teams up with fellow UK-based sound architect B.G. Nichols (aka Si_COMM) for a spaced-out disc of textural electronics. Developed around the theme of technology's fusion with biology (and DNA's inherent similarities to digital data), this journey begins with the atmospheric 'Containment State'. Later tracks sulk along with a vaguely ominous vibe, barely making their bleepy, glitchy presence known. 'Primary Impulses' sizzles dangerously like severed electrical wires, but it's not until 'Neural Separation' that chunks of skittering noise join the fray, generally shocking listeners who have become complacent and comfortable with the disc's overall ambient nature. Superb work and a joy for those interested in a more scientific approach to sound construction. |

With "Early Love Music" the German Folk musician Axel Frank sets a surpassing milestone for the new generation of Folk artists. A year after releasing his quite Martial / Neoclassical oriented debut on Cold Spring (CSR49CD), Axel got heavily involved with Alpine Folk heroes Sturmpercht and found his love in late 60s / early 70s Psych / Prog Folk music, thus changing his own direction, with the highly successful MCD 'Kristalle'. The complex arrangements and large variety of instruments even remind of The Incredible String Band and some early Acid-Folk bands.
