Where "Amelia" showed Yeh’s sensitive side, "WSBC/SSS" goes straight for the jugular with pure distorted punk noise, all rampant high end and a growling analogue core. However what sets Yeh away from so many of his contemporaries is that beneath all the hellish distortion and crushing doom is a sense of harmony and pastoral perfection. DAVID JACKMAN & PHILIP SANDERSON - 'Terrain' 10" (Die Stadt)
Two tracks from early cassette releases. Side A is an alternative version of "Terrain" by Jackman and Sanderson, originally released on the "0 Degrees North" cassette (Aeroplane 1982). With Jackman overdubbing low guttural growls on a steel strung cello and Sanderson programming coffee-percolation on a drum machine, "Terrain" is a lo-fi production that finds its companions in the work of Throbbing Gristle, Hunting Lodge, and the Broken Flag camp of noise. Side B is a solo piece by Jackman, originally released on the 'Adrift' cassette (Snatch Tapes 1981). It is similarly lo-fi with a hypnotic loop of a monochromatic guitar topped with clanging metals and samples from orchestral swells, which have been drained of all color and replaced with a swampy din. "Edge Of Nothing" was first released in a cassette edition of 5 (!) copies on Jackman’s Aeroplane imprint, and then included on the legendary “The Elephant Table Album” DLP in 1983 (feat. Coil, Nurse With Wound, SPK, Lustmord etc). Both tracks presented here are the January 2003 mixes of the original material, which was derived from variously stimulating a cymbal with bows, knuckles, loops etc. An extremely dense piece of experimental noise where (allegedly) the B side is the A side reversed. Side A is a heavy, densely layered drone piece comprised of harsh, grating sounds all over the sound field, but sliding from start to finish with remarkable constancy. Side B is a field recording, untreated, unfiltered, recorded outdoors, with a great hiss that is very much present in the mix. What is usually familiar is suspended in order to make new experiences. The acoustic elements have been configured in a certain causal formation which is not consciously perceivable within the phenomenal order. Instead of capturing field recordings of wind, Michael Northam tried to capture this feeling and the essence of this process through instrumental recordings from Indonesian flute and keyboard. "Ruins Of Morning" shows NADJA in a very experimental and dark poetic mood. Their contribution for the "Substantia Innominata" series comes in two long parts (around 20mins each) based around one musical theme that appears again and again (a great dark harmonic phrase moving through different levels through this epic track), linked by very beautiful drone-sections and more noisy outbursts. Song-orientation and a more experimental sound-art approach are thus combined perfectly. The fantastic lyrics from Aidan Baker point in a very poetic way to an utopian new morning where material values play no role anymore, but a new state of sensual being is settled in an almost J.G.BALLARDian way. These lyrics open up a scope of vague possible interpretations witch match up perfectly with the impressing music; a music that describes "The Unknown" in strong metaphors of surrealistic psychic states of being. With their focused, sensitive touch, unusual acoustic textures, gentle wordplay and ensemble interaction The Young Elders are traversing the folk world and leaving large shoes to fill. Their latest efforts meet paths with psychedelic sirens, Turkish rain calls, celtic ghost stories and realisations of the natural world. Though often lumped in with the "freak-folk" genre Nick Castro has been transcending such labels since most of these new folkies were still playing indie rock. Noise Maker's Fifes is an experimental performance group from Brussels. The first side of "Zona Incerta" is based on the choreography "Dyonisos' Last Day" from 2003 and uses material from various live performances. The second side is created from insect field recordings made in Kenya. "Zona Incerta" builds a hazy and foggy dimension.. sounds ebb and flow in and out... water and metal-sounds are recognisable in the sound-field, high insect-frequencies intertwine with all kinds of strange noises and animal sounds.
