GERRITT & JOHN WIESE - 'The Disappearing Act EP' MCD (Misanthropic Agenda)
It's Wiese - brace yourself. This 20 minute EP sees the noise maverick working with Misanthropic Agenda label boss Gerritt, hardly a shrinking violet himself, having gone head to head with Merzbow, D Yellow Swans and Sunn O))) in the past. 'The Disappearing Act EP' starts out with two short, sharp shocks of mashed-up sound, sudden jolts of electricity and the worrying rush of what sounds like toxic gas escaping from a canister. The final track is one 15 minute fade up of unbearably caustic jet engine whine. It'll have you pinned back in your armchair while your face gets pummelled by its horribly intense power. Digipak.
Jazzkammer's Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre, captured live in Singapore in 2003, during the height of the SARS epidemic. "This CD sees them playing with noise and feedback, despite the use of some water sounds and short outbursts of rhythmical elements. For the bigger part it's still Merzbow influenced noise music" (Vital). 20 minutes of beautiful broken sounds and horrendous feedback! Comes in a beautiful little gatefold digifile.

KEPLERS ODD - 'GRO J1655-40' CD (Desolation House)
Keplers Odd are a unique drone project comprised of bass, guitar and noise, headed by Daniel Jansson of Deadwood. The band's debut album is a raw sound affair performed and recorded live in the truest sense of the idea. Keplers Odd create textural soundscapes of harsh atmospheric noise which show an uncanny Merzbow-ian sense of tension and release. It's this innate ability to harness noise's primal ebb and flow that allows "GRO J1655-40" to be as disturbing as humanly possible. 6-panel digipak.

MERZBOW & Z'EV - 'Spiral Right / Spiral Left' CD (Cold Spring CSR133CD)
In the planning (and many faxes, emails and discussions in person) for 20 years, finally this stunning collaborative release for Cold Spring from Japanese Noise king Merzbow and legendary elemental sound artist Z'EV is here. The tracks were created in London and Tokyo, with each artist remixing the other's original sounds. Two tracks weighing in at 22 minutes and 28 minutes respectively! Dark Ambient Noise in a special textured card digisleeve.
"Age of 369" was originally released on cassette in 1984. The lesser known "Chant 2" is also from this period and complements the sonic intensity of the other. Of further importance is the influence of Maurizio Bianchi (MB) and the mail art that was integral to the industrial underground. These reissues document significant works from Japan's Noise master. Made with a cheap tape recorder and a lot of tape loops, which were then manipulated by hand. "Lowest Music 2" was a very early example of that. Then Merzbow mixed more tape loops with more harsh noise. "Age of 369" (Mlroku No Yo) and "Chant 2" are the finest early examples of that. The Japanese title of "Age of 369" was inspired by the Omoto Cult, founded by Onisabura Degughi. The double CD re-release of "Age of 369" (miroku No Yo) and Chant 2" combines both the music and the Mail Art of this period and is a fitting document of Merzbow In 1984. Australian import. MERZBOW - 'Anicca' CD (Cold Spring CSR107CD)
The first track on Merzbow's latest opus was recorded at Tin Pan Alley studios, London, on 20th April 2008 - the day after his momentous performance at ULU. Akita created an astounding and very unique 20-minute track, playing freestyle drums over his trademark noise. The final 2 tracks were created at Munemi House in Tokyo. Another fine example of why Merzbow is the undisputed King of Japanese Noise! 58 minutes in total.
MERZBOW - 'Another Merzbow Records' 3 x CD Set (Dirter)
Possibly the most essential Merzbow release for many years. This 3CD set is culled from appearances on various compilations, ranging from the most obscure cassette releases, to long out of print gems on labels such as Blast First and Susan Lawly. This material spans an entire decade from 1991 to 2001 and as such, tells its own story of the development and sonic chicanery that is the Merzbow sound during this time. MERZBOW - 'Arijigoku' CD (Vivo Records)
"There's in your face, and then there's Merzbow. Masami Akita's umpteenth pummelling album shrieks straight down to business, squalls upon shards mashed up against sheets and droves of fingernail-scraping NOISE, four screaming yowls of pain and rage shot through from ear to ear and back again with lurching, clattery drums abused and battered over and over in demented rhythms, the whole shuddering with vibrant, agonising sonic torture, eventually becoming breathlessly overpowering, ripping up all external sensory input on a tide of aural debasement and kicking down the doors of any other sort of perception until there is only the sound of one electrified claw smacking, Merzbow's avenging boot of animal oppression stamping on the ears forever, twisting and wrenching with a dynamic which is also content to offer distended, almost caressingly brutal passages where the fervour of the acoustic punishment is allowed to subside before returning tenfold" (Plan B). MERZBOW - 'Higanbana' CD (Vivo Records)
"Masami Akita in collaboration with some chickens. Given his penchant for animal kingdom-themed releases in recent years, that actually makes some sort of sense. Another theme in recent Merzbow releases has been the reappearance of analogue electronics, and true to form, Higanbana finds Akita using EMS synth alongside his laptop. It's hard to tell exactly what's making the noise at any given time here, but the intensity is often pretty overwhelming. Fortunately, in amongst the fuzz and feedback you'll hear a few cleaner oscillations penetrating the mix, adding elements of colour, and avoiding the all-out overload that might have otherwise foiled the album... This is an intense, largely unrelenting assault on the ears, and that's probably exactly what you expected to hear from Akita" (Boomkat). Packaged in a hardback 6-panel digisleeve.
Masami Akita's 5th release for Polish label Vivo. This is (apparently) one of the most accessible releases in the huge Merzbow discography. MERZBOW - 'Lop Lop' CD (Rustblade)
Masami Akita began to bring about his own brand of noise music in 1979, and since then been constantly changing the very foundation his sound is built on. His music is an interpretation of very complex ideologies imbued with a violently non-traditional, but ultimately transparent sense of beauty. On "Lop Lop" Merzbow takes a step in a new direction from his recent releases and focuses on manipulating sounds and harsh beats in a way meant to make a new mark on the face of his well known style. The synths and guitars scream and sing in a way which allows them to be heard through all the oppressive noise, often returning to ferocious power electronics sounds which clearly define the anger of this new release. MERZBOW - 'Marmo' CD (Old Europa Cafe)
"Marmo" (Marble for Italian) is devoted to Italian and particularly Venetian marble. Masami Akita visited and played in this magic Italian city several times and was impressed by all the marbles used in the Venetian buildings and paintings. The 3 tracks composing this album are entitled "Merzbotanica-parallela" - an ode to "Botanica parallela", the book written by the Italian author Leo Lionni who is also the inventor of such botanic science, a parallel hyper-real botanic where imagination is more reliable than reality. A real psychadelic tribute by the Japanese master of noise to Venice and Italy. MERZBOW - 'Ouroboros' CD (Soleilmoon)
Ouroboros is an ancient symbol dating back more than 4000 years. A snake or dragon eats its own tail, and represents eternity, or the circularity of life. A more modern interpretation might suggest that mankind will eventually consume itself once it finishes consuming all the life and resources on Earth. Masami Akita, recording under the name Merzbow is considered one of the preeminent artists in the field of noise music. In recent years his output has centered on animal themes, following his concern for the protection of animal rights. Albums for chickens, whales, seals and dolphins have been released on a variety of labels. "Ouroboros" is presented in an exquisite handmade screen-printed eight-panel roll-folder featuring original artwork by Mr. Akita, and is limited to 500 copies.
This disc from the Japanese master builds after many minutes into noise, but this is structured, rhythmic, surging blasts of localised power. Reminds of old Skullflower, Holland Skin Tunnel, a loud Nurse With Wound. This is because it feels so instrumental, almost as if a guitar or two are involved in this. From there we return to Akita's early style where the walls of noise were not so loud and thick. There are very obvious variations and mechanical changes within the piece, creating patterns and moods. Digipak.

WOLD - 'Badb' CD (Crucial Blast)
Originally released on cassette in 2004 in a limited edition of 100 copies, "Badb" is one of the earliest releases from the Saskatchewan-based black metal / noise duo Wold. The nine tracks featured here revolve around the mythology of the war goddess, the spectre of doom that lurks at the edge of the battlefield. It begins at the heart of a roiling black blizzard and proceeds through a charred nightmare soundscape of icy corroded black metal riffs, fractured blasting, melancholic melodies blurred and smeared into malevolent new shapes, and scathing distorted witch-screams ripping through the blackness, all doused and drowned in Merzbowian levels of feedback and distortion abuse. Now presented on CD for the first time, this early swarm of Wold's psychotropic black metal / noise terror comes with all-new artwork from Pippi Zornoza. A stunning blast of black noise metal, highly recommended to devotees of extreme distorted evil. Digipak.
