The concept of aurally conveying the horror of a gas chamber was realised through field recordings in an abandoned electrical power station in Brisbane in 1992. The sounds are grating and harsh, a mixture of field recordings and electronic manipulations. One can rarely pinpoint a location or action but the images the sounds conjure up are of all sorts of nefarious activites related to death by machinery. The sleeve notes take you into the horror that is the Calcutta Gas Chamber. A beautifully composed and produced CD, completely remastered and re-packaged.

The first track on Merzbow's latest opus was recorded at Tin Pan Alley studios, London, on 20th April 2008 - the day after his momentous performance at ULU. Akita created an astounding and very unique 20-minute track, playing freestyle drums over his trademark noise. The final 2 tracks were created at Munemi House in Tokyo. Another fine example of why Merzbow is the undisputed King of Japanese Noise! 58 minutes in total.

Somehow threatening. The previous SRF record, 'Nostromo' (CSR34CD) used the first few seconds of the film 'Alien' to create an expansive, chilling work of ambient. Here, the artist was living in a small flat in the UK with a heating/ac unit that was slowly breaking down, clogged with dust, slowly choking on it's own decay. Dead Weather Machine tells monstrous tales of things and places and feelings that it's common beginnings would never seem to suggest. But then imagine being as small as a piece of dust, trekking through some enormous, dying mechanical landscape, the sounds of world-sized storms swirling all around you. A microscopic entity, floating for ages through the channels and chambers of an enormous, dying machine, a machine that makes the weather for an entire world. A machine that is slowly dying.

Onthe night of 29th November 2001, as part of the STIGMA 2001 FESTIVAL in London, COLD SPRING had a night of their bands playing. As a surprise on the night, and impressed with the line-up, Douglas P of DEATH IN JUNE approached and asked if he could open the show with an acoustic set. All four acts were digitally recorded by Stephen Meixner (CONTRASTATE). For this set, each CD is packaged in its own card wallet, in its own camouflage, inside a shrinkwrapped clamshell style box. The set is made complete with a foldout poster of images all the bands that played this STEEL NIGHT.

Through an element darkly… In the fall of 2005 Z’EV began dipping deep into his archives and selecting recordings to produce ‘sum things / a possible form for cold dark matter’, a project reflecting his take on the ‘dark ambience’ genre. Composed between December 2005 and March 2006, these 6 pieces endeavour to transport the listener deep into their long forgotten memories of the primal forces at the dawn of creation. Each piece is based on a single sound source. Absolutely no effects of any kind, not even equalization, were applied to the source recordings. Instead Z’EV relied solely on the stretching of the duration and pitch of the samples and then edited and mixed the results down into the heart of space. Hear then, the state of the art in elemental musics. Not to forget the beautiful packaging by artist Abby Helasdottir.
