  Akamatsu / Inami / Ishigami AKAMATSU / INAMI / ISHIGAMI - 'Split' CD (Electr-Ohm)

£5 Meltdown An incredible performance of 16 different tracks by three Japanese experimental laptop artists, each one working a piece by themselves. Akamatsu has intriguing, minimalist tableaus, each working off of a pattern of eventual change but from small places. The sounds of each piece are completely different. The Ishigami pieces are similar but even more stripped-down, with greater changes in volume, at times descending into mechanical concrete, like a robot playing with a mechanical cricket. The Inami pieces are thick compared to the previous; drones that begin a slow-motion whirlwind of sound, faraway basso utterances, the slow throbbing of an engine wall, receding, receding into a blank, misty vacuum of clouds. Imaginative and varied.

Bisclaveret BISCLAVERET - 'Vs Bruno - Les Mannequins' CD (Zoharum)

£5 Meltdown An homage to one of the greatest artists of modern art, Bruno Schulz, released on the date of his birth, 12th July. In the text from his work "Tractate on Mannequins", Schulz presents his aesthetic views about the status of an artist, his relation to his creation, what meaning and importance it has, and what the effects of internal creation are. This work inspired Polish duo Bisclaveret to create this improvised concept album, which combines classical sounds with their more Drone / Dark Ambient side. 40 minutes of music in a digipak.

Brendan Murray BRENDAN MURRAY - 'Wonders Never Cease' CD (Intransitive Recordings)

£5 Meltdown Four years in the making, the music of Brendan Murray’s latest album of cinematic drone anthems was honed during live concerts around New York and New England. Recorded in situ, each track was painstakingly (re)assembled and embellished back at Murray’s studio. From the laminal scorch of the opening track, through an electric fizz storm and a breathy hymn for what sounds like harmonica and folding chairs (?), the eyes-wide-open bliss of "Wonders" is exhilarating, melodic and intimate. This is electro-acoustic music as gloriously life-affirming and natural as a sunrise.

£5 Meltdown This is a collection of Norwegian improv noise collective DEL's live performances between 1998 and 2000. The seven man unit seems to use all manner of junk, and drums, guitars etc and created vaguely rhythmic experiments, that often combine to create sounds that can be gentle and excellent drifting ambience, or even gel to create SKULLFLOWER / RAMLEH workouts.   DVT DVT - 'DVT' CD (Cranial Fracture Recordings)

£5 Meltdown Starting with thick, richly saturated rhythms and bellicose samples, then moving to aggressive "in your face" power electronics from this Australian act. Samples burst and crushing noises collide as declarations echo in the distance... then comes the death winds, the obscure voices and the high pitched scraping, testing the eardrums (and speakers)!

Exsanguinate EXSANGUINATE / [L-I-T-D-N-A] - 'Allegory of Death' CD (Misanthrope Studio)

£5 Meltdown Each band presents it's own sonic 'Allegories of Death'... meditations on that inevitability we all fear and at the same time are fascinated by. Exsanguinate (Thomas Garrison of Control) starts with a commanding and urgent track, flush with militaristic undercurrents in it's opening moments. From there the material evolves into something more abstract and steeped in dread with tendrils stretching into elements of clinical drone and throbbing frequencies to a more introspective ambient chaos. [L-I-T-D-N-A] round out the disc with their unique blend of deep tones, harsh frequencies, gentle pulses against an almost ambient feedback. Squalls, static, interjecting beats, distortions and vocals accentuate an anxious, looming reality. For fans of Death Industrial.

£5 Meltdown The debut of Forms Of Things Unknown is a five-track, 30-minute EP of music ranging from dark ambient dirge to medieval sacred song to jazz-inflected art rock. Forms Of Things Unknown is the delinquent brainchild of San Francisco multi-instrumentalist Ferrara Brain Pan. His musical career includes early collaborations with noise music pioneer Boyd Rice (NON), and a fortuitous uncredited appearance on 1994's 'Rien' by Krautrock legends Faust (produced by Jim O’Rourke). 'Cross Purposes' was mixed and produced from material played entirely by Ferrara Brain Pan, excepting vocal performances by Bob Ayres and Shannon Wolfe and a cameo guest appearance by 'Babs Santini' aka Steven Stapleton of renowned musical subversives Nurse With Wound.

Utilizing a collage of disparate sound sources (samples galore: from third world ambience to classical diversions to radio noise... to noise itself, and more!), Janko Krul Albanskaj manipulated the sounds into brittle sonic texts of confusion and chaos... £5 Meltdown LAW, the creative vehicle in which Mitchell Altum employs his experimental endeavours, has a niche fusion, in terms of technique, between Noise Ambient and Power Electronics - both of which usually sit on opposite sides of the fence, having it's own set of rules to play out. ‘Our Life…” has an open-ended but "governed" approach, whereby the already established rules of Noise Ambient and Power Electronics are reversed, meshed and re-constructed through the use of a regimentally structured, but eclectic mode of assembly.

Mathias Delplanque / Montral MATHIAS DELPLANQUE - 'Ma Chambre Quant Je N'Y Suis Pas (Montreal)' CD (Mondes Elliptiques)

Meltdown This is the stereo version of a sound installation presented at Montreal's Studio Cormier in December 2004. The piece is based on the recording of 'silences', i.e. the recording of sound produced in spaces with no human presence. The sound of an 'empty' Studio Cormier was used as the material for the production of this piece. The sound takes were done during the quietest moments of the day, by means of microphones placed strategically throughout the Studio by the artist. The sounds gathered were then amplified and their frequencies accentuated to the extreme. The result of the experiment, as presented here, constitutes a genuine drone odyssey playing on fullness and emptiness, presence and absence, 'speak' and 'non-speak'. One long track full of subtle movement and enlivened with underlying currents. Limited to 500 copies in a textured sleeve with inserts. Mondes Elliptiques is a division of Angle.Rec, Canada.

Oblivion Ensemble OBLIVION ENSEMBLE - 'Seraphim Hallucino' CD (Malignant Records)

£5 Meltdown Over 11 years in the making (1995-2006), 'Seraphim Hallucino' is widely considered to be Act 2 of the "virtual" opera trilogy begun by Oblivion Ensemble's 1995 release of 'Nightmare: Sinistrotorse'. At Seraphim Hallucino's source are strange, electro-acoustic improvisations of percussion, trumpet, voice, synthesizers and guitar- sculpted and sampled, twisted and turned, shaped into building and diminishing moments, and, at times appearing alone, pure and unmodified. Deeply imbedded in the music and fragmented lyrics are secrets, intertwining themes, voices, and imprinted messages. All come together to create an enormously complex, mercurial mix of surreal, dynamic and dark sounds. To fully appreciate the scope and intricacies of 'Seraphim Hallucino', headphones in a darkened room are highly recommended. Released in a stunning 6-panel digipak.

£5 Meltdown Inami mines a unique vein of exploratory ambience here, dipping occasionally into throbbing, masterful beats. The fourth track, a 21 minute piece titled 'Denomination', flowers out from throbbing waves of drone, into mechanical power, rumbling and straining, overflowing against the prettier beginning. Other tracks are strict drone, deep and grey, with the occasional passing of a distant train or phantom. Then other works explore this same feel but then pull rhythm out from the darkness, and suddenly it's crunchy beats, like Ocosi or Quoit, ripsawing against a textural, floral background, both swirling around the other. Japanese experimental is known mostly for Noise, but Inami is into chilled Darkhop, Avant-Garde expressions in a very unique way.

Feat: Andrey Kiritchenko, Brain Fork, Brompton's Cocktail, Fizzarum, Hladna, Noises Of Russia, Notchnoi Prospekt, PalSecam, Porch Nap, Spies Boys, Theodor Bastard, Vishudha Kali and Volga - plus a bonus track from S.P.U.L.

£5 Meltdown Re-release of the Veiled Allusions debut album with 4 bonus tracks. 70 minutes of minimal dark ambient with noise and industrial touches. Low sounds produce uneasy, ominously melancholic feelings. A view upon the grim, suicidal future of the world! Another great release from the prolific Karsten Hamre (Penitent / Dense Vision Shrine). One for fans of Vinterriket etc. Comes in a very nice digipak.

Viridian Green VIRIDIAN GREEN - 'Night' CD (CAPP)

£5 Meltdown Very nice, smooth, ambient treatments - mostly utilising methods akin to NIGHTMARE LODGE - that is deep, dark moments, punctuated with beats and the occasional vocal sample, which, for some reason, reminds me of CURRENT 93 in places. A solid and well executed album. Stefano Glaufx the frontman of Viridian Green created CAPP Productions. Greek import.

Xeno Volcano XENO VOLCANO / ELEKTRA STURMSCHNELL - 'Die Organik' CD (Hardpresse)

£5 Meltdown "Die Organik" is the second joint release by Xeno Volcano and poet Elektra Sturmschnell. Like their other release, "Wasserleichentraume", the album is a fusion of sound and spoken word. The sound sources for the album are orchestrated noise, instruments, and recordings. The result is soft, complex noise and harmonies. Elektra’s voice is treated into the sound as an instrument, and at times is manipulated beyond recognition. The mood of the album is of bleakness; the desert. Sound sources include: field recordings of the Grand Canyon, destruction of humboldt, CA Redwood trees, the N Judah where it meets the ocean, Berlin traffic at Alexanderplatz, Arizona desert silence, overhead air traffic, Zürich traffic at Hardbrücke, drills and other power tools instrumentation, microwave antennae pickup, human voice, etc. A fascinating excursion.

ZFK ZFK - 'Rabochiy Kontrol' CD (Teito Sound Company)

£5 Meltdown A 45-minute blast of harsh noise from this Russian outfit, recorded in July 2004. Originally released in a very limited edition (x 37) on cult Russian label Abgurd Subdivision, this is a worthy CD re-release on Japanese label Teito. "Rabochiy Kontrol" features steady walls of distortion, rumbling and feedback. Industrial soundscapes with rhythmic noise reflect a powerful live performance. Reminiscent of Russian Industrial acts Stalnoy Pakt and Linija Mass.

Zonk't ZONK'T - 'Purr' CD (Sound On Probation)

£5 Meltdown Third full album for Zonk't, following his remarkable "Itching" on Brume Records. This French act (former member of Nox) presents another very well-written album made of ultra-deep basses, flowing atmospheres, small clicks'n'cuts, and a rather massive sound. Ranging from smooth, minimal dub pulses to drone-oriented, ultra-deep bass, "Purr" takes distilled techno under the microscope and well below freezing with its infinitesimal examination of slow-motion electronic minimalism. It is a work of astonishingly deep character, with an undeniable undercurrent of unease.
