"Allgrena is a project run by Austrian composer Franz Nigl circulating in spheres between ambient and industrial. Present album is the second effort from Allgrena, the first being "Tonräder" released on the same label in 1999. Before better known as Panicsville, but now moving into the realms of serious music (this new release got some sponsoring from arts councils) under his own name. The octa-thing deals with the number eight, and the three pieces here on this DVD (no images) can be played on a 7.1 installation, if you have such a thing. I only have a 2.0 installation, called 'stereo', but it sounds great still. Ortmann lists a list of instruments - mainly old analogue synthesizers and where he did his field recordings. Just as on the Schimpfluch disc, I'd say this is the small alley where noise is really interesting. Not because it's super loud, although there are points when things are pretty loud, but because of the fine balance between electronic, noisy sounds and the crackling of highly amplified field recordings which are all put together into an interesting collage of sound. Not like Schimpfluch of short and shorter sounds, but through longer pieces which work quite well. Great stuff, both of these releases and if noise is like this, I'd sign up again." (Vital Weekly).

During the 80s, Kiyoshi Mizutani was a member of Merzbow with Masami Akita, beginning his solo work in 1989. Mizutani's sound is characterised by use of primitive electric feedback and field recordings. Soundscape theory is integral to his work. Kiyoharu Kuwayama began working with sound in the late 1980s, using half-scale violin and contact mic, daily junk and found objects. In 1999 he started improvised acoustic duo Kuwayama-Kijima. Hideaki Shimada is a Japanese violinist. In the late 70s he became interested in the European improvised music scene. Since 1980, he has been involved in violin improvisation. In 1985, he started solo project, Agencement. His solowork has been described as both noise and music, avantgarde and minimalist, nervous and mellow, frantic and still, hectic and calm. Recorded at Gambetta, Tokyo in 2001.

LAMA SONAM DORJE & ANTON BATAGOV - 'Daily Practice' CD (Tummo Productions)
This album is an unique collaboration between a composer Anton Batagov and Lama Sonam Dorje, the first Russian Buddhist practitioner who spent 7 years in Himalayas in a strict solitary retreat. After the retreat he received permission and blessing for teaching Dharma in Russia. Lama Sonam Dorje chose eight canonical texts and recorded all of them, along with a dzogchen meditation on a sound 'A,' in the studio. Batagov then composed an instrumental accompaniment, along with two textless instrumental pieces: an introduction, and music for daily meditation. In these compositions he used the rhythmic structure of traditional Tibetan prosody. These rhythmic patterns are usually heard in Tibetan prayers.

MATHIAS DELPLANQUE - 'Ma Chambre Quant Je N'Y Suis Pas (Montreal)' CD (Mondes Elliptiques)
This is the stereo version of a sound installation presented at Montreal's Studio Cormier in December 2004. The piece is based on the recording of 'silences', i.e. the recording of sound produced in spaces with no human presence. The sound of an 'empty' Studio Cormier was used as the material for the production of this piece. The sound takes were done during the quietest moments of the day, by means of microphones placed strategically throughout the Studio by the artist. The sounds gathered were then amplified and their frequencies accentuated to the extreme. The result of the experiment, as presented here, constitutes a genuine drone odyssey playing on fullness and emptiness, presence and absence, 'speak' and 'non-speak'. Swiss improviser and composer Tomas Korber works with sounds created by Japanese laptop artist Kazuya Ishigami and vice versa. Utilizing Korber’s guitar sounds Ishigami crafts an intriguing electronic world over two pieces - austere electrics, frenzied digitalia, high pitches, bass drones, melodic waves of feedback and rhythmic pulses. Korber meanwhile begins his piece with a static piercing tone that dissipates suddenly into silence. A strategy he continues throughout the piece, building towards crescendos and the then dropping in a block of silence, only to startle with a single resonating tone.

The music is an invocation of the coldness and cruelty of a borderzone between two worlds and a transmutation of fear into euphoria. ZONK'T - 'Purr' CD (Sound On Probation)
Third full album for Zonk't, following his remarkable "Itching" on Brume Records. This French act (former member of Nox) presents another very well-written album made of ultra-deep basses, flowing atmospheres, small clicks'n'cuts, and a rather massive sound. Ranging from smooth, minimal dub pulses to drone-oriented, ultra-deep bass, "Purr" takes distilled techno under the microscope and well below freezing with its infinitesimal examination of slow-motion electronic minimalism. It is a work of astonishingly deep character, with an undeniable undercurrent of unease.
With their third full length CD, 15 Degrees Below Zero re-introduce the listener to their signature blend of guitar, digital and analog atmospheres, and noise. The trio continue to explore a territory of noise-oriented soundscapes, rich drones, flowing ambient and compositional narratives that emerge between the planes of discord and melody, but with this release, a feeling of spaciousness underlies the existing tension.
