An artistic collaboration between musicians Anni Hogan, Robert Strachan and Itchy Ear, film maker Bob Wass and mountaineer Cathy O'Dowd. Hogan and Itchy Ear originally worked on a series of piano pieces inspired by Rene Daumal's 'Mount Analogue' and the superior wisdom of mountains, using O'Dowds Himalayan conquests for particular authentic inspiration. Robert and Anni used these pieces and the Himalayan peaks as a template for painting a soundwave soundscape around the piano compositions. O'Dowd performed a fascinating monologue over the piece 'Deathzone'. The 'Mountain' film was created by Bob Wass from Cathy's original film footage of her Everest expeditions.

Das Synthetische Mischgewebe started in the early 80's in Berlin with electronical industrial / avant-garde associated cassette releases. All compositions by Guido Huebner, created between 1999 and 2004 in Caen, France and Berlin, Germany. Sections of track 6 recorded in the studio for electro-acoustic music at the arts academy of Berlin. Field recordings for track 8 and 9 were carried out at the harbour of Hamburg, Germany, as well as at the shores of Lower Normandy and in the countryside around Caen, especially the bridges trespassing the canal between Caen and the sea. Echran is the project of Davide Del Col (Molnija Aura), teaming up with Fabio Volpi, who has worked over the last few years with the Milanese audio / video collective Otolab. Starting in 2003, the project joins two different kinds of experiences: one is gloomy ambient oriented, the other is more noise-based with a psychedelic attitude. Echran's dark electronic soundscapes are not that easy to pigeonhole: there's a constant metronome-like pulse which could be compared to Pan Sonic or some minimal techno, but at the same time isn't really ambient or droning.

An acoustic album from viking folk project Folkodia, which comprises as many as 14 musicians from Gemany, Austria, France, Monaco, Switzerland and beyond. The album includes acoustic versions of tracks from previous albums, alongside some completely new ones. With the inclusion of two female vocalists, this is a sweet opus to listen from beginning to end. The male counterparts have the manly tones that are more than appropriate to translate the Viking story-telling. Instead of a bass, a cello was the chosen instrument. This is accompanied by gongs, bells, tom toms, flutes, tin whistles etc to complete the folksy environment. |

The latest Genocide Organ album dates back to 2005 - now in 2011 the world is challenged by well known ancient patterns and presumed economic reasons. That of military contractors - whether it have been the Cretian archers, the Celtic cavalry, the Germanic body guards, the Swiss guard - muslim or christian motivated soldiers, spartans and Greeks - European or Asian - UN - Forces or private contractors - those people always sought more than money. This record deals with the overall topic of mercenary or more. Like always Genocide Organ's music is straight forward - expanding all genres and categories. A powerful assault and aggressive undertone interchanges with a dense depressive mood. All tracks are new but have been partly played during their last live appearance. The record is an experience. Though this one-man project ostensibly falls within doom's murky sphere it manages to cut through a variety of subterranean genres with a cold blade, effectively providing a cross section of all things dour and gloomy. The first thing you'll notice are the trudging atonal riffs and unearthly rasps, but closer inspection reveals wisps of industrial static, droning melancholy and vague traces of forgotten folk, suggesting that while a debt may well be owed to the likes of Burning Witch and Thergothon, the album's creator is also more than au fait with the further-flung territory mapped out by the likes of Gnaw Their Tongues, Coil and Nadja. JENNIFER GENTLE - 'Concentric' CD (A Silent Place)

Better known as purveyors of quirky, semi-sleazy avant pop gems on their Sub Pop albums, Jennifer Gentle have also issued through the years a series of weirder releases, running the gamut from out-there psychedelic rock to “crunching and hefty slab of tripped out musique concrète worthy of Joji Yuasa, Kunihara Akayima or one of their equivalent early ‘60s greats” (Julian Cope). Concentric is the last and also their bleakest, most uncompromising and probably best experimental album to date. This time Fasolo took his and into his own studio, recorded them and then spent hours painstakingly editing the material, adding here and there the odd effect and generally directing what sounds like a nightmarish Surrealist movie perversely shot in lush Cinemascope, or a hellish version of Lumpy Gravy as played by a freaked-out jazz combo. KAULA - 'Avadhuta Gita Chapter I' CD (Doomentia)

Kaula's debut is the vision of one Pietro Riparbelli (K11), an Italian artist who not only composed and recorded the whole thing, but also designed its cryptic booklet and contributed with organs, medianic chants, field recordings and radio signals. Kaula is a whole different beast to K11. What could be seen at first glance at some kind of weird black-metal outburst - including rasping vocals courtesy of Rosy from old-school death-metal warriors Profanal and buzzsaw guitars - soon makes sure all rules go out the window by using various metal (doom, thrash) and non-metal (noise industrial) elements and create a sonic black hole. All lyrics are based here on ancient text called ‘Avadhuta Gita’, said to have been originally written in the IXth century. As a result, all seven tracks have been named after it and are basically about attaining a spiritual state “equivalent to the existence of god”. Mastered by Mell Dettmer (SunnO))), Earth). Diving into Russian act Liholesie's musical creations is like disappearing into a fog of time-like fading away into the twilight of far horizons. "Vast Homeland" stylistically contains various influences - from instrumental movie-soundtracks, to fragments of folkish darkwave and soft ambient soundscapes with a clear orientation towards folk, but always created with the help of synthetic instruments. Lotus Eaters is Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), KTL), James Plotkin (Khanate, Phantomsmasher) and Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom). Previously issued on CD, Plotkin has remixed, remastered and rearranged Wurmwulv for this vinyl edition using alternate takes from the original recording sessions. The 2LP also includes reworked material from Lotus Eaters' self-titled 7" released by Drone Records. 52 minutes and 29 seconds on 3 sides of direct metal mastered 200 gram virgin vinyl, the 2LP has a drawing by Turner etched on side D. Housed in a Stoughton tip-on gatefold jacket designed by O'Malley, Wurmwulv features Stephen Kasner paintings printed on linen-textured woven paper, a spot varnished interior and flooded pockets. The Kasner paintings and Turner drawings included were created specifically for this vinyl edition. Reconfigured for vinyl, Wurmwulv is a solvent-soaked carpet ride into loose soil. Worms writhe over cilia as moist roots lick and graze skin. The dampened howls of wolves reverberate through water freezing into creaking crystals. New compositions by a Warsaw duo and a Japanese surgeon are presented on this 50-minute album. MAAAA buzzes using the Korg MS-20 and Polivoks synthesizers, and they clink damaging iron pieces and coil springs. Dr. Kusafuka (K2) handles his stylus like a scalpel. Having decided not to employ metal garbage, he turns to extensive use of his analogue synth, creating loud and sharp pieces of work reminiscent of a surgical knife cutting flesh. All in all, be prepared for the heavy analogue modulations, drilling feedback, rich bass, pulsations, biting high frequencies and the hazardous loudness of the record. Extreme Harsh Noise! This is the first volume of the "Merzcow" trilogy by Japanoise King Merzbow, with "Surabhi" and "Goloka" following later in 2011. It is inspired by cattle worship in Hinduism. The album is named after Kamadhenu, a Hindu goddess who is the mother of all cows and a "cow of plenty'. Ltd x 300 copies in a digipak.

This 2nd volume contains two full length albums and bonus tracks that showcase the more Death Ambient and Neoclassical side of the project. Disc 1 is an unreleased album from 2006-8 called "Cathartic Drifts In A Sea Of Sadness". Sonically this slab of melancholia features many elements familiar to the Murderous Vision sound, plus some new elements and a much more composed overall sound. Disc 2 contains the out of print album from 2009, "Frozen In Morphia". Showcasing the neoclassical elements in the forefront with a grinding underbelly of post-industrial textures and demonic vocal drifts. NADJA & GALENA - 'Konstruktion' LP (Adagio830)

Having long established themselves as pioneers in the heavy drone and dark ambient scene, Nadja, now based in Berlin, continue pushing things forward with Konstruktion. Nadja's unique thumbprint shines strong mostly on the B side of this album, punishing guitar that scratches the listener's itch for heavy, churning and an engulfing sonic experience. Galena adds subtle synth and sustaining guitar lines that brew to boil just below Nadja's set threshold. Working in a similar and cohesive manner, Galena slowly stirs the pot with dark menacing synth layers, tape treatments and creeping washed out guitar. The A-Side shows Galena's strengths more prominent but again, welcoming subtle and tasteful additions by their collaborators. A wonderful example of 2 like-minded duos joining forces to express their own unique styles and creating something new and fresh out of the mist. Comes with download card.

Re-issue of Rome's 3rd album, originally released on Cold Meat Industry in 2008. Rome’s particular brand of post-industrial folk, combined with new-wave song-writing and neoclassical arrangements, takes on a new and poppy twist. But these outstanding songs have way too much depth to be dismissed as mere pop music. This third album is of a more subtle darkness and probably Rome’s best work to date. A work of art of extreme sincerity, "Masse Mensch Material" revolves around the themes of love, faith and endurance. The second full-length album of Munich's Spreu & Weizen is a conceptual album concerned with the fall and second rise of the Roman Empire. Reissue of Velnias' 2008 album. The music of Illinois based blacked doom outfit Velnias can be best described as a combination of sorrowful black metal with a very doomy atmosphere, combined with elements of folk. With three lengthy songs, the emphasis has been laid upon a musical foundation of progressive yet feral riffs, intertwining with delicate passages that only make the heavier parts that much more potent. Combined with lyrical content based upon the premise that the human race is insignificant compared to the grand power and prestige of nature this is a debut album that should not be dismissed! A feature length documentary, "City/Ruins: Art In The Face Of Industrial Decay", written by Aaron Vilk and edited and directed by Stephen Petrus (Murderous Vision). This film compiles over 2 hours of interviews and live footage, documenting the Cleveland, Ohio Industrial scene. Think of it as an oral retelling of the history and characteristics of the scene since the early 1990s, spliced with footage of nearly 20 industrial and harsh noise acts including Skin Graft, Murderous Vision, Aaron Dilloway, Robert Turman, Nyodene D and many more. This pro-duplicated DVD comes in a slimline case and is limited to 500 copies. Highly recommended!

Whereas early Blood Axis music was marked by keyboards and samples, Blood Axis in 2010 is stripped down to an essential core of natural instrumentation - electric and acoustic strings, melodeon, piano, highland bagpipes and Galician gaita, marching percussion, the mysterious Annabel-a-tron, and Bobby BeauSoleil's growling, prison-vintage guitar eruptions circa 1976. Underpinning the album and propelling much of the music is the traditional Irish bodhrán, recorded here with unprecedented power. Moynihan's ominous voice is well matched by Annabel Lee's elfin intonations, just as her violin finds a perfect counterpoint in Robert Ferbrache's protean guitar parts. Shot through by myth and romance, the expressive lyrics on "Born Again" have their roots in ancient and modern poetry, archaic invocations and tragic laments. Both unclassifiable and unforgettable: neither folk nor rock, traditional nor avant-garde, modern nor archaic, it is simply Blood Axis. To everything there is season. For those who are cursed, a time to die and to be forgotten. And for the blessed, a time to be born again: to live on, beyond death, in the minds of men. "...these Russians play doom at a snail's pace. Even if it was played at twice the speed, it would still be agonizingly slow. The lethargic riffs generate a heavy and oppressive atmosphere enhanced by minimal drumming and keyboards. The vocals are initially ineffectively distorted, but these are quickly discarded in favour of a more efficient natural grunt. It need not be said, but just in case there is any doubt: these are lengthy compositions, tending towards the double digit mark. The band is not too dissimilar to funeral doomsters Tyranny, but do possess their own distinctive flavour... Recommended for all who like their doom to proceed at approximately the same speed as a glacier -- only less welcoming and with less warmth" (Chronicles Of Chaos). Finished with a nice slipcase. |
