Aidan Baker / Brandon Valdivia AIDAN BAKER & BRANDON VALDIVIA - 'Live 2008-14-11' 3" CD (Universal Tongue)

Live collaboration between these two Canadian musicians - Aidan Baker (Nadja) and Brandon Valdivia (Picastro) - recorded at the Lab30 Festival in Augsburg, Germany, November 14, 2008. This is a live improvisation with guitar and drums, detaching from what is the trademark sound of Aidan Baker and going in a krautrock / psych direction. Artwork by Mories (Grafika Obskura / Gnaw Their Tongues). Ltd x 323 hand-numbered copies in mini-DVD packaging. 3" CD proper (NOT CDR). ACT FAST!

Aidan Baker / ThisQuietArmy / Nadja AIDAN BAKER & THISQUIETARMY - 'Orange (Extended)' CD (Lunasylum)

"Orange" was the first collaboration between the two Canadian drone-doom guitarists Aidan Baker (Nadja) & Eric Quach. After sharing a bill in 2005 with their respective bands, they exchanged files by mail, which were then mixed by Quach in Montreal during the summer of 2006. The result was released as an EP through Quach's imprint (TQA Records). "Orange" is now reissued, re-edited, remastered and extended into a 47 minute CD, with the addition of 4 extra tracks from the same sessions that were left behind five years ago.   Aidan Baker / 7inch AIDAN BAKER - 'Bach Eingeschaltet, Vierter Band' 7" (Reue Um Reue)

The fourth installment of “Bach Eingeschaltet” by Canadian guitar-drone hero Aidan Baker (Nadja) is a double-edged sword: his interpretations of the maestro are both the closest to the originals, almost academic in execution, and in the end the most deconstructive. The live arrangement for electric guitar of the famous cello suite 'Prelude' slowly but surely drowns in a mist of effects abuse, while the epic and lush metal-drone version of a menuet is carried away by Nadja-esque lumbering guitar chords in streams of boundless distortion. Packaged in a cardboard foldout sleeve and limited to just 166 (!!) hand-numbered copies on clear silver grey vinyl.

Aidan Baker AIDAN BAKER - 'Blue Figures' CD (Basses Frequences)

This massive live album from Aidan Baker (Nadja) consists of two live sets (70 min+), one with 'Figures' and the other with an 'Untitled Drone' and 'Gathering Blue'. Aidan Baker's live performances are always surprising, not to say amazing. His previous live albums are perfect examples of what he is capable of when he's on stage. You already know the songs but it's always a bit different; there are variations, extensions, improvisations. Aidan dug in his own material to find a new vision... and you won't be disappointed here! Last but not least, the sound quality is stunning. Ltd x 300 copies in a gatefold digisleeve.

Aidan Baker AIDAN BAKER - 'I Fall Into You' CD (Basses Frequences)

Reissue of the limited 2002 release from Canadian artist Aidan Baker (Nadja, Arc), originally issued on US label Public Eyesore. "Mixing drone with post rock and experimental electronics, this 5 track, 50-minute release takes inspiration from tons of different sources and stirs them together into one drifting mass of sound... heaving layers shift over one another like a Stars Of The Lid track, but instead of letting the washes go wherever they want, he introduces a very subtle beat behind it all... Combined, the first three tracks on the release are some of the best work in the area of drone and ambient that I've heard this year... if you're a fan of drone and ambient music, definitely seek out this release, as Baker is definitely doing some great things (Almost Cool).   Aidan Baker AIDAN BAKER - 'Lost In The Rat Maze' CD (ConSouling Sounds)

This prolific Canadian classically trained multi-instrumentalist has generously contributed to the doom / drone / ambient genre under the guise of Nadja, Arc and Whisper Room. Having been known for his extensive ambient soundscapes, Baker chose a different approach here to his sound weaving - albeit true to the "Bakersound". Instead of a densely layered and broad sound palette, Baker has almost embraced a "post-rock-ish" method of composing. More compact, pointed and clear progressions can be discovered, together with a diverse array of instruments, sounds and techniques. Captivating, fascinating and repetitive mesmerizing sounds, but with a different twist to it. Ltd x 800.

Taking this experiment between both acts to the next level, 'Points At Infinity' takes the doom / drone / ambient experiment into new territory as both acts continue to push new sonic ground.   Genghis Tron / VinylLP GENGHIS TRON - 'Board Up The House Remixes Vol. 5' 12" (Crucial Blast)

If Genghis Tron's frayed and sparking mix of aggressive mathcore and electronics wasn't innovative enough, they've embarked on an ambitious multi-label remix project following their first album, "Board Up The House". The three tracks on the fifth and final edition comes wrapped in layers of distortion at once atmospheric and damaging. Tim Hecker's take on the title track is a slow thaw of icy electronic texture, and the Nadja remix of "I Won't Come Back Alive" stretches it out to fifteen minutes of buried drum hits and chilly synths. The final track is a distorted electro remix of "I Won't Come Back Alive" by Dudes You Can Trust. Ltd x 1000 copies on magenta / mint green marbled vinyl.

Half Makeshift HALF MAKESHIFT - 'L'Anse Amort' CD (20 Buck Spin)

Half Makeshift is the solo project of Pennsylvania's Nathan Michael. L'anse Amort contains four tracks that expand on the density of his debut "Aphotic Leech", creating more space and reflection, more peaks and valleys. The monumental 17 minute opener "Whale Heart" builds from a simple melody and crackling electro-static to eventually collapse under its own weight in a huge Nadja-esque wall of drone riffery , while other tracks are comparable to Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore. "L'anse Amort" is epic in a way most "post-rock" bands can only aspire to. Comes specially packaged in a outsize gatefold sleeve.

Though this one-man project ostensibly falls within doom's murky sphere it manages to cut through a variety of subterranean genres with a cold blade, effectively providing a cross section of all things dour and gloomy. The first thing you'll notice are the trudging atonal riffs and unearthly rasps, but closer inspection reveals wisps of industrial static, droning melancholy and vague traces of forgotten folk, suggesting that while a debt may well be owed to the likes of Burning Witch and Thergothon, the album's creator is also more than au fait with the further-flung territory mapped out by the likes of Gnaw Their Tongues, Coil and Nadja.   Nadja / Galena / VinylLP NADJA & GALENA - 'Konstruktion' LP (Adagio830)

Having long established themselves as pioneers in the heavy drone and dark ambient scene, Nadja, now based in Berlin, continue pushing things forward with Konstruktion. Nadja's unique thumbprint shines strong mostly on the B side of this album, punishing guitar that scratches the listener's itch for heavy, churning and an engulfing sonic experience. Galena adds subtle synth and sustaining guitar lines that brew to boil just below Nadja's set threshold. Working in a similar and cohesive manner, Galena slowly stirs the pot with dark menacing synth layers, tape treatments and creeping washed out guitar. The A-Side shows Galena's strengths more prominent but again, welcoming subtle and tasteful additions by their collaborators. A wonderful example of 2 like-minded duos joining forces to express their own unique styles and creating something new and fresh out of the mist. Comes with download card.

"Desire In Uneasiness" is an album of all new material from acclaimed Canadian dreamsludge weavers Nadja. "Desire..." also marks the first Nadja album to feature a live drummer in place of the drum machine programming that has driven the band's previous recordings, and the difference in the band's sound is apparent from the first crushing beats of album opener 'Disambiguation'.   Nadja / BBA NADJA / BLACK BONED ANGEL - 'S/T' CD (20 Buck Spin)

A monumental cross-continental collaboration between Canada's prolific neo-doom duo Nadja and New Zealand's pitch black droners Black Boned Angel. The two 20+ minutes tracks contained on this self-titled collaboration have a less accessible vibe then the Jesu-like track on last year's 'Christ Send Light' EP. There are no vocals to be heard. They are comprised in equal parts of Nadja's fuzzed-out, lurching and hazy dream-doom, and BBA's razor-sharp metallic riff-shards. Extended passages of riff-static noise bleeds one track into the next while deep space eerieness looms ever present in the shadows. Finally the whole thing collapses under the weight of its own self-created black hole. This is the end. Digipak.

Guitar-based CD with long tracks from Aidan Baker (Nadja), relapxych.o and M. Sandbleistift (Licht-Ung). "Sandbleistift's gauzy drones hover above a thick amplifier hum, coupled with metal-on-metal scrapes, electrical interference directed into the pick-ups, and spidery textures that wiggle into the mix as he plucks away at the bridge of his guitar... Aidan Baker steals the show on this album. Even with his esteemed catalogue of ethereal ambience and doomdronedirge excursions, "One Step Ahead, One Step Behind" is pretty exceptional. A desolate guitar melody repeats throughout the entire track, alluding to the doom of Nadja had he kicked on the distortion pedals. But without, there's a sadness which permeates the track, accompanied by ghostly flickers of complimentary drones, bursts of static, and a slow-burning roar of distant distortion that eventually consumes the entire piece. Relapxych.0 holds his own in creating a series of guitar-meets-the-laptop abstractions that looks to Fennesz and Tim Hecker for inspiration, and does a pretty good job in the way of an homage."
