Selected sound materials from sonorous stones, stalactites, bat calls, flutes, field recordings collected by Mariolina Zitta in different caves in Liguria a Sardinia, Italy, processed and edited by Alio Die. Drones are played by the authors on a set of long stones that resonate, caressed by a bathed hand, and by the same principle of crystal glasses. A very immersive and obscure journey, an underground meditation with a ritual touch, in accordance with the "natural sound", despite the sampling and multi-effect techniques used here. ALIO DIE & MATHIAS GRASSOW - 'Praha Meditations' CD

After a concert in Prague in 2009, these artists spontaneously played acoustic instruments in a stone circle on top of a hill in Troja. Inspired by the special surroundings and the springtime, zithers, tubes, bells, rattles, shells and flutes were used. The recordings were edited in studio by Alio Die, then Mathias Grassow added electronic drones to expand the point of view and enrich the flow and layers of the compositions. The resultant eight tracks show how mostly static and repetitive balanced sounds can interact with our perception during listening, bringing us into an active and intimate quiet mood, softly absorbing us into a dream-like and time-opening experience. 6-panel digipak.

The first album by these Osaka girls is a way-60's-style not-quite-garage psychedelic tour de force, rather reminiscent of the earliest San Francisco sound groups and the famous Japanese noise-rock scene. Sometimes gentle and spacey, sometimes punky, with great, lush female vocals. This reissue (with different artwork to the 1991 Alchemy Records edition) also includes as a bonus track their 11 minute space opus "Crazy Blues" from the out-of-print, Japan-only compilation "Taste of the Wild West 3". Guitarist Toda Fusao later collaborated with Japanoise legend Masonna under the name Christine 23 Onna. Still sealed!

Numancia was a small castro (Spanish for Celtiberian village). The inhabitants of Numancia fought against the Roman Empire for more than 20 years. In 133B.C. Rome sent their best general Escipion to create a siege and destroy Numancia so they could control the entire peninsula. However, when the Romans entered the village, the survivors decided to kill their own children, set their own belongings on fire and end their own lives. If the Empire controlled Celtiberia they could not control their people. Musically Numancia is a invigorating trip from the magnificence of the village to the final decision of choose to die instead of being conquered. Solid drums and ritual elements are mixed with Heathen tunes for the recognizable Ur-Folk sound. All texts are written and sung in Spanish and in the ancient Celtiberian language. Outsize sleeve.

Nordic sound artists BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa have authored the last component to a trilogy of isolationist compositions for barren field recordings and lumbering electric drones, thematically linked in the psychotropic effects of alcohol. With one singular track that spans 60 minutes, a nearly constant thrum and rumble of monochromatic low frequencies casts a grim pall upon the precisely dialled-in modulations and vibrations. Spectral guitars, maudlin tunes from haunted radios, angrily growling voices, and field recordings of wind-whipped snow and ice bury themselves deep amidst these subharmonic drones. All of these tease at the edge of perception, sculpting the narrative of the drone into a vehicle for unhinged expressionism of varying degrees of horror, melancholy, beauty, and oblivion. Dmitriy Tolmatskiy (1970-2009) - a journalist and musician from the city of Saratov, one of the first promoters of alternative intellectual culture and particularly industrial music in post-Soviet Russia. He was the creator of the RWCDAX website, which had certain influence on the mindset of many modern personalities of Russian post-industrial art. The compositions included on "Selected Funbient Works 1-4" were recorded by the Dmitriy in the first half of 00s. Initially it was planned to release four parts of "Funbient" on four separate CDs. However later Dmitriy selected the best for a double album release. The album vividly displays the complex music world of DMT, which, like everything innovative, exists on the crossing of several musical styles and directions: from dark-ambient and industrial noise sketches to technoid rhythms and pure sonic experiments. "Uufwärts e d’Föuse" (Upward to the rocks) is a conceptual album which takes the listener on an imposing musical journey to untouched Alpine areas. As on "Urbärglieder" all tracks are presented in the typical Fräkmündt Central-Swiss alemannic dialect. After an "Alp-Blessing" ("Aupsääge"), the journey upwards is visualised using acoustic guitars, accordion, drums, hurdy-gurdy melodies and flute. The nighttime track “Höttehock” is a swinging and wild traditional dancing track with a catchy accordion melody and nice acoustic guitars. The last track "Stouz ond frey" (proud and free) is a devotional and powerful song with profound hurdy-gurdy, rhythmic guitar melodies and catchy accordion tunes. The MCD ends with a Dark Alpine Ambient track called "Bärgtröim" (Mountain Dreams) which smoothly leads the listener back to the valley. A varied 27-minute piece of extraordinary Ur-Folk music, which perfectly describes the mystic and legendary Alpine areas. Outsize sleeve.

Since 2003 German musician Karl Bösmann has released a whole bunch of limited edition releases on such labels as Tosom, Domestic Violence Recordings, Youdonthavetocallitmusic and Verato Project. This is his second CD proper and includes several new compositions. His soundscapes oscillate between programme music and abstraction, leaving no doubt about the maturity and intensity of his talent. His impulse is to experiment and to create timeless solid buildings of tones. Bösmann constructs, in the good old tradition of electroacoustic music, with instruments played by himself, and completely without the fashionable chic of a laptop: minimal repetitive passages, especially drones that vibrate in themselves, that flash, shimmer and take a character and 3D-quality of its own. Murmer is the pseudonym for Patrick McGinley. His field recordings of activated environments (resonant industrial spaces, windswept telephone lines, bowed branches, gasping ventilator systems etc.) originate from all of the locations where he has travelled. In spiralling his manipulated field recordings as a slow revelation of the environmental sonorities that undeservedly go unnoticed each and every day. Singing frequencies of a bowed piece of metal undulate against a grey tapestry of rain and rasping insects. Golden overtones from shimmering drones quell what agitated textures reside in McGinley's active field recordings, rendering the aggregate sound a nocturnal opiate with considerable potency. "Vorweltschweigen" is completely based on the lyrics and sounds of Sturmpercht, the legendary creators of Alpine Folk music. Rauhnacht is pure Alpine Black Metal, based on the atmosphere of early Norwegian Black Metal, but dealing with Alpine and Celtic mythology, philosophy and tradition. ABM contains a large variety of (ancient) traditional acoustic instruments from Alpine/Celtic areas, such as the Alphorn, the Teufelsgeige, hunter's trumpets and other obscure Alpine instruments, as well as organic/natural field-recordings from black forests, craggy mountains and dark caves. STEIN - 'Haldor' CD (Heimatfolk)

Stein was founded in 2005 as the solo-project of Norbert Strahl, the singer of Seelenthron and founding member of the famous Neofolk outfit Dies Natalis. Norbert's aim with Stein was, to compose songs for the poems of Georg Thom (his grandfather), written between 1911 and 1936. In the beginning of the band, Norbert worked with Jens Vetter of Grünland, who also was ex-Dies Natalis member, but due to the intense work on Seelenthron, Stein stopped in the fledgling stage, until in 2009 the project finally grew to a real band. Finally in summer 2010 the first album "Haldor" was recorded in the Studios of Alexander Meier. "Haldor" is a mix of romantic-paganism and apocalyptic visions, packed in real handmade, classical Neofolk. The album is dedicated to Lorenz Klinger, Norbert's little son, who fights against leukemia with the power of a tiny rock. "Haldor" is Norse and means "Thor's rock". Digipak.

In March 2010, Le Bruit De La Neige Festival organized the annual "Luigi Russolo - Rossana Maggia Competition" at the Faverges Soierie, France. The aim was to promote the electroacoustic music of young composers (under 35 years old). 60 composers from 28 countries participated in this contest. MV selected the 13 pieces which received the maximum votes for this compilation. Bruitism is a movement of sound art that was born on 9th March 1913 when the painter and composer Luigi Russolo published the manifesto "L'Arte dei Rumori" (The Art of Noises), inviting the people to appreciate the complex sounds from nature and the industrial environment. VARIOUS ARTISTS - 'Willows Songs' CD (Finders Keepers) - £12 / £13 / £14
It seems as though 'Willow's Song' (from "The Wicker Man" soundtrack) has made an impact on everyone who's heard it. All these years on, it still has a sense of the uncanny about it. The title song appears here in its original instrumental version, as performed by the band Magnet, and the remainder of this album is a selection of vintage recordings and traditional Folk songs that inspired the music featured on the film's soundtrack. It's worth remembering that while the music of "The Wicker Man" is often credited with having heavily influenced the various psychedelic folk revivals that have taken place since the '70s, those songs were written by New Yorker Paul Giovanni, and are far from the authentic Pagan tracts they've so often passed for. This Finders Keepers album goes some way toward reconnecting the film with the traditional material that inspired its legendary score, and includes children's rhymes like 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'Oranges and Lemons' sung with dulcimer accompaniment. You'll also notice appearances of medieval composition 'Miri It Is' and a 1960 recording of Child Ballad 'Willy O' Winsbury', both of which were modified and adapted for the soundtrack recordings. There's much to recommend this compilation - not only for fans of The Wicker Man, but anyone with an interest in archived British folk. An essential purchase! CD in jewelcase with obi strip. |
