BIRCH BOOK - 'Fortune & Folly' LP (Ahnstern / Steinklang)
This classic Folk milestone was recorded on San Juan Island of the Pacific Northwest. "Fortune & Folly" is the fitting second volume of Birch Book (aka In Gowan Ring). Assuming the allegorical emblems of The Wheel of Fortune and The Traveling Fool, Fortune & Folly distill the introspections of a perennial rambler reckoning the Bitter and the Bliss of The Road Less Traveled. Drifting away from the overtly psychedelic, medieval, and soporific atmosphere which typified In Gowan Ring, Bee (Jon Michael Beirth) displays a more organic, individualistic approach to songwriting. Fortune & Folly blends elements of idiosyncratic folk-pop and outcast-country with brooding layers of sound and sense, yielding a spectral ethereality in a captivating chiaroscuro thick with the visionary allusions of a haunted wanderer. Ltd x 400 copies on black vinyl in a heavy gatefold cover, with 2 exclusive bonus tracks.

BIRCH BOOK - 'Vol. III - A Hand Full Of Days' CD (Little Somebody Records)
"A Hand Full of Days" represents the culmination of a bizarre journey through 'That High Lonesome Path'. A collection of songs and incongruous meditations find family with stark passage and psychedelic interlude. A dreamy masterpiece of perfect songwriting! Variously labeled 'Wyrd', 'Psychedelic' or 'Avant Folk', In Gowan Ring's Jon Michael Beirth (or B'ee) extends his roots into poetic-folk traditions while cultivating an inimitable, self-attuned writing style that prefigured the new-psyche-folk movement. As well as composing the original material for Birch Book and In Gowan Ring, he collects renditions of traditional songs and builds many of the acoustic instruments featured in performances and recordings such as the recent lyre-guitar & leaf cittern. Gatefold digifile.
IRIJ is a one-woman-folk project brought to life by Eluveite violinist Meri Tadic in autumn 2006. Her compositions range from mere instrumentals all the way to a cappella songs. It's a journey through a Slavic soul devoted to tradition and sincerity. IRIJ is mentioned in Slavic mythology with almost oppositional meanings. Its the celestial residence of pagan gods as well as the here and now and the materialistic world. Her music sounds bewitching and bright, but dark and plain at the same time. It catches up with what is in between, a world between the worlds. 23 minutes of stunning Balkan Folk music. Digipak.
First album by the Austrian Psychedelic-Folk artist Jahrtal (Ewald Spiss from 80s Industrial act Tyrol. "Lichtbuch" is a unique collection of traditional folk songs from the Alps, musical versions of poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, traditionals from England and Scotland with German translation and even a traditional Tibetan prayer. A wide and balanced instrumentation gives the album a unique touch, with a sad / optimistic mood. Jahrtal uses acoustic and electric guitars, lute, banjo, dulcimer, gzitar, harpzither, psalter, flute, duduk, schalm, violin, organ and bird song. The main influences of Jahrtal are in the end-60s and early 70s with bands like Witthüser & Westrupp, Spirogyra and C.O.B., but a comparison to the most beautiful ballads of Current 93 is inevitable as well. This is an absolutely authentic Folk album with great heart and pure soul.

The lyrics of the second album are poems of "Songs Of Innocence and Of Experience" by the English poet William Blake (1757-1827), translated by Ewald Spiss, as near as possible to the original Blake-texts.

THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part I: Swirling Lands Of Disquiet And Catharsis' CD (Ahnstern / Steinklang)
The Joy of Nature is a project from the Azores (a group of 9 islands between Europe and North America, belonging to Portugal). Musically, "The Joy of Nature" is like a serpent - always renewing itself, never resting in one shape, changing form but keeping the same essence. “Swirling Lands of Disquiet and Catharsis” is the first part of a trilogy entitled “The Empty Circle”. This first part corresponds to Nigredo. This album is about a world of disquiet, in which a catharsis should be done. To gather the impurities, realise their nature and build something pure from there. The music follows the concept - there are elements of Folk, Ambient, Psychedelic and Experimental music, mixed in a coherent way, creating a unique sound and a breathtaking atmosphere, predominantly acoustic and with dark tones.

Filled with traditional melodies and psychedelic moments, Werkraum guides the listener through a magical world of acoustic sounds and picturesque poetry, telling tales from ancient fairie days. First official album by this unique Russian Folk band, based in Jerusalem. Dreamingly beautiful, sad and at the same time weird and progressive Folk songs with a gentle early 70's touch. The powerful and empathetic (Russian) vocals give a very personal and unique touch to the music of Zlye Kukly. This band is hard to compare to other artists; maybe reminding of the best Folk from Gae Bolg, or the best ballads of Boyd Rice, but mainly the great early 70's era of Yugoslavian folk artists, such as Kladivo Konj in Voda, Svremena na Vreme, Drugi Nacin and others.
