An artistic collaboration between musicians Anni Hogan, Robert Strachan and Itchy Ear, film maker Bob Wass and mountaineer Cathy O'Dowd. Hogan and Itchy Ear originally worked on a series of piano pieces inspired by Rene Daumal's 'Mount Analogue' and the superior wisdom of mountains, using O'Dowds Himalayan conquests for particular authentic inspiration. Robert and Anni used these pieces and the Himalayan peaks as a template for painting a soundwave soundscape around the piano compositions. O'Dowd performed a fascinating monologue over the piece 'Deathzone'. The 'Mountain' film was created by Bob Wass from Cathy's original film footage of her Everest expeditions.

THE LAST EVER DRONE EP! Spiracle is the project of Japanese artist Hitoshi Kojo. On this, the first Spiracle vinyl release, two pieces of sublime Drone-Muzak are placed, mesmerizing and mind-expanding sonic clouds. The two tracks are "focused on the physicality and the osmosis of the sound" as Hitoshi describes it. The acoustic source material comes from a glass harp, resonated trumpets, metal sheets and electronics. A kind of sonographical report of a process that a "subtle spiritual existence merges into a physical body and becomes tangible through the senses." First edition of 300 copies on transparent vinyl in a handmade sleeve made of cotton wool, gauze, thread and special paper.

These songs were recorded live to a 1940’s Webster Wire Recorder. Wire recorders were originally invented in the late 1800’s and recorded sound to a hair-thin strand of stainless steel wire. This was the predecessor to magnetic tape as a recording medium. The wire is extremely fragile and fickle, and the machine itself adds certain audio elements to the recording; pitch shifts, bleed over from previous recordings on the reused wire, a clanking sound from the cylinders turning, tonal colorings and distortions, etc. These elements very much colour and contribute to the recordings. Therefore, this record is considered a “collaboration” between the artists and this antiquated machine. Ghostly and disconcerting but also uplifting…a unqiue record. Ltd x 600 copies on grey marbled vinyl, with a different design per record label (200 of each - this is the altvinyl edition) plus an insert.

After 10 years, these recordings have now finally been restored, redesigned and remastered and features two bonus tracks. This album was recorded back to back with "Victory or death" and carries the same menacing feeling, but with a bit more structure and emphasis on pounding rhythmic industrial noise. If you want rough old-school industrial this is what you need! The campaign continues. |
