Alan Courtis / Edward Sol / 7inch ANLA COURTIS / EDWARD SOL - 'Sunburst Lux' 7" (Quasi Pop)

Both compositions on this record relate to (more or less) “tape music”. The piece from Argentinian experimental master Anla Courtis (aka Alan Courtis) is solely based on manipulated sounds of geysers, recorded in South America. Ukrainian Edward Sol works with weird cassette loops, lo-fi oscillations and some primitive tones from his vintage USSR-made analogue synth Polyvox. Generally speaking, the sound of this record belongs to the monolith dark drone music. Ltd x 300 copies.

Artefactum / 7inch ARTEFACTUM - 'Sub Rosa' 7" (Drone Records)

The first vinyl release of the enchanting Polish act Artefactum. Described by herself as "Female Esoterica", "Sub Rosa" opens a vast space filled with different sounds coming from very far away, as nebulous melodies, whispers, voices and choirs, little clicks and cracks, with soft percussive structures appearing on Side B. The two pieces named "Rosa Alba" and "Rosa Rubea" (white & red rose) have a strong metaphorical alchemistic background, meaning the end point of all alchemistic transmutations. The overall release including the beautiful artwork gives the impression of an almost fabulous acoustic fantasy, so refined and almost caressing yet secretive at the same time. Second edition of 300 copies on pink vinyl with insert, in a handmade cover with decoratively cut corners.

  Aube / 7inch AUBE - 'Blau + Rot' 7" (Auf Abwegen)

On "Blau + Rot", released for the first european tour by AUBE in eight years, Akifumi Nakajima worked with an old Roland SH-12 percussive synth. The result is two long tracks (each over 6 minutes) with a nice floating mood that sometimes changes into aggressiveness, without losing its warmth. A great little record by one of the most important experimental musicians from Japan. Clear vinyl. Regular edition of 400 copies.

Auburn Lull / 7inch AUBURN LULL - 'Behind All Curses Of Thought Lies The Ability To Focus On Vacant Spaces' 7" (Zeal Records)

This 7" nods towards more electronically-based space rock / ambient elements of Auburn Lull than heard on prior releases; elements that interweave amongst cascading guitars and droning samples. The band and many others simply refer to this release by the name of it's title track, 'North Territorial'. Nice piece.

  Aun / 7inch AUN - 'Utica' 7" (Drone Records)

Harmonic distortion-drones of a higher beauty; Martin Dumais' AUN is the rising drone-star from the active Montreal-scene! The sound of Aun is a marriage between very harmonic / emotional drones and distorted machine-power, between sensibility and noise-strength, usually based on guitar sound-sources. The two pieces here show his melancholic side, and are of a lighter, more luminous nature. The material on the A-Side ("Utica") is still very expansive and builds an impressive suspense curve, but the B-Side "Lelehudah" is full of touching and yearnful harmonic structures, a majestic dance of polyphonic overtones.   Belborn / 7inch BELBORN - 'Perchta' 7" (Percht)

Dedicated to the Goddess Perchta, this 4-track release is based on recordings of traditional Perchtenläufe and nature. Different than most other music from Belborn this release (as one would expect being on Steinklang’s ‘Bavarian’ side-label), is more in the way of traditional German folk music. Belborn lead us on an acoustic journey through strange rites and ancient folkish rituals in the mysterious Rauhnacht. Ltd x only 365 hand-numbered copies on nice, thick vinyl!

Carsten Vollmer / 7inch CARSTEN VOLLMER - 'Arbeit Nummer 7' 7" (Cat Killer)

Released on Vollmer’s own label, this is a release with very little information and minimal artwork. Total relentless lo-fi noise over two tracks. Incomprehensible, dense and murderous screeching amongst thick layers of electronics and violence make this quite a difficult and claustrophobic release! "A three-track EP which belches out some of the most ghost-ridden, wasted, slow and obnoxious guitar punk rock you could ever hope to hear outside of that sector of Hades reserved exclusively for rock stars maudits. Astonishingly, these coarse and corruptive anthems of caustic horror all seem to have begun life as cover versions, including one of a Hank Williams song. Although there’s been a lot of post-modernist water under the bridge since The Residents released their all-time murderous butchery version of ‘Satisfaction’ by The Stones, Dead Raven Choir come close to capturing some of that same gloriously poisonous nihilism" (The Sound Projector). The two songs here are the first new DIJ material to come to light since "The Rule of Thirds". These new tracks offer not only the same radical departure from more complex song arrangements as on the previous album but this time also a departure from the use of acoustic guitar. Instead the instrument chosen to accompany Douglas Pearce's voice is the piano, played by Miro Snejder. Some might be tempted to say that this is a new direction for Death In June yet we have to disagree, as for almost 30 years this has been a ship that has maintained its course against all odds.   Melanchoholics / 7inch MELANCHOHOLICS - 'Masking My Monkeys' 7" (Drone Records)

This German trio Melanchoholics work on dark guitarish and very filmic sound-drones, "thick atmospheric darkness" at its best. With a background rooted in Death Metal and Grindcore as well as in Industrial, they still use guitar, bass and electronic sounds, but their aim is to explore the realms of loneliness and melancholy by sculpting almost filmic atmospheres with not much aggression. Their first vinyl release is filled with beautiful accordion drones, desert-like guitars, electronic sounds and voice-samples, thus enlarging the "classic" drone sound in a very fruitful way. "In / Out" is his first vinyl release and uses a wide range of environmental recordings which are processed digitally in more "electro-acoustic" ways. This leads to a balance between Drone and Electro-Acoustic where the acoustic potential of conventional reality is enlarged via digital processing. Through intense mutation & deconstruction of acoustic materials a new or previously hidden meaning can be revealed for the blind spot of our perception.   Rothko / 7inch ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)

Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

The Infant Cycle is an experimental project from Ontario (Canada), active since 1992. The three pieces on this EP were created using sounds from various instruments (Trombone, guitar, windchimes, marimba, birdcage). The result sounds rather electronic and hypnotic, with bright shining drones and repetitive rhythmic patterns, loops moving into more amorphous and multilayered electro-acoustics. In spite of the rather experimental working-methods the outcome is very compact and condensed. The Infant Cycle's approach to sound is based on the belief that words and explanations can only fail to describe or explain it, what is needed is a non-verbal, intuitive understanding of the work." The first chapter in the 'Mizuko Jizo' series from ABM contains 2 brand new "Ghost Ambient" tracks, dedicated to one of the most beloved of all Japanese divinities.   Troum / 7inch TROUM - 'Nargis' 7" (Viva Hate Records)

A continuation of Maeror Tri, this is dark, moody, contemplative ambient / drone material. "The first half of this single still sounds like Troum, but is unlike anything we've heard from them, strange looped high end guitar, what sounds like backwards chords, almost choral vocals, dramatic and haunting and cinematic... over a distant grinding low end tone drifting way off in the background, washed over by epic sweeping swells.. The other side is a bit more raw and intense, a seriously corrosive guitarscape, distorted and crumbling chordal buzz, looped and layered into a strange glacial riff... it manages to be intense and fierce but also gloriously washed out and blissful."   Ultrasound / 7inch ULTRASOUND - 'Death Comes From The Left' 7" (Drone Records)

Coming originally from Texas, the trio ultrasound (partly ex-Stars Of The Lid) are now located in Den Haag, Netherlands, and Texas, USA. With this, their first ever 7", they present two unbelievable emotional touching pieces of guitar and bass-drone-music, where long echoes of overtone guitar-sounds melt in one stream of pure sensible acoustics. Ultrasound submerges the listener into a deep salty sea to float on the frail border between air and water, light and reflection, perception and knowing. This is pure yearning transformed into sounds. Second edition of 300 copies on clear vinyl in a clear sleeve with sticker.

Volcano The Bear / 7inch VOLCANO THE BEAR - 'That People Don't Know Who They Are' 7" (Quasi Pop)

"One of the stranger bands that I encounter is Volcano The Bear. I never know what to think about them. Sometimes I seem to hate them, and sometimes I just love them. Perhaps its the format here that makes me love them, perhaps its also the fact that they are a rock band in my book and that such a format just works out fine. Two fine slabs of their mutated rock music, which ends up in a sorrowful ballad on 'That People Don't Know They Are Monsters', while on the other side the mutations work out in a more krautrock version. Two strange pieces, but they work well here on this format..." (Vital Weekly). You may think it's a ballad, noise, tribal shamanism, folk or acoustic. Ltd x 500 copies.

Wäldchengarten / 7inch WALDCHENGARTEN - 'The Leech' 7" (Drone Records)

Wäldchengarten is a Danish duo that could be best described as “noise ambient” or “raw / harsh drone”. After some already very promising releases, this is their first vinyl. The music on 'The Leech' is very raw and filled with tiny noisy outbursts, at the same time ultra-sluggish and powerful. Low whistling feedback and pure electronic whirl-tones are omnipresent, everything seems to gradually sink to an alien centre of heavy gravity. This is dark, but its a darkness of sheer beauty. First edition of 300 copies on violet marbled vinyl. Black Covers with silver silk screen print and inlay.

Whip / 7inch WHIP - 'Sewn In Seems' 7" (Zeal Records)

Folk Rock from Oregon. At the foundation of "Sewn In Seems" is everything you would expect from Jason Merritt (aka Whip); wonderfully raw front-porch singing and acoustic guitar. Normally Merritt ends there, letting the simplisty and naked beauty of the songs speak for themselves. However, with "Sewn in Seems," he has taken the song to a whole new level. Besides the addition of standing bass and piano, Merritt has added a lot of atmosphere to the song by his playing of some mellow flutes, wine glasses and manipulated tea kettles. The end result is spectacular.

Xabec / 7inch XABEC - 'Feuerstern' 7" Boxset (Drone Records)

"Feuerstern" ("Firestar") captures two tracks of luminous tones and magnetic resonances, which create a warm and floating aural flux. With mellow concrete material setting the counterpoint, very subtle hisses, smacking and clicking sounds can be distinguished. These are enriched further on Side B with field recordings by Michael Northam, made in 2006 at the Audioframes Sonic Art Festival in Herne. This was where "Feuerstern" was also performed in a choreographed way using fireworks! Very delicate tone colours and a perfectly balanced sound pattern allow for contemplative listening sessions. The 7" comes in a golden lettered and embossed grey cardboard box with golden printed inlay. First edition of 300 copies on dark red vinyl.

On "Synergetics", he presents two tracks of very minimal and quiet oceanic drones, based on guitar and piano.
