Through an element darkly… In the fall of 2005 Z’EV
began dipping deep into his archives and selecting recordings
to produce ‘sum things / a possible form for cold dark
matter’, a project reflecting his take on the ‘dark
ambience’ genre. Composed between December 2005 and
March 2006, these 6 pieces endeavour to transport the listener
deep into their long forgotten memories of the primal forces
at the dawn of creation. Each piece is based on a single sound
source. Absolutely no effects of any kind, not even equalization,
were applied to the source recordings. Instead Z’EV
relied solely on the stretching of the duration and pitch
of the samples and then edited and mixed the results down
into the heart of space. Hear then, the state of the art in
elemental musics. Not to forget the beautiful packaging by
artist Abby Helasdottir.

Where "Amelia" showed Yeh’s sensitive side, "WSBC/SSS" goes straight for the jugular with pure distorted punk noise, all rampant high end and a growling analogue core. However what sets Yeh away from so many of his contemporaries is that beneath all the hellish distortion and crushing doom is a sense of harmony and pastoral perfection. Ethnic Acid is/was the nom de plume of British noise musician Anthony Di Franco (Ramleh, ex-Skulflower, AX, JFK, Novatron). These recordings span the years 1986 to 1988 when, while still a schoolboy, Anthony was carving out a singular identity as a electronic / acoustic noise musician recording for labels such as Broken Flag and Birthbiter. Obscure and arcane, this music has only been available to the most dedicated hardcore noise fanatics - until now.

The album is filled with majestic, transcendental melancholy; clear and soothing with veiled melodies and celestial harmonies hidden inside its simple sound structures. It sounds a bit nostalgic as Dmitry uses only old-fashioned tape-techniques and analogue synth loops, utilising digital devices just for the final mastering. Matt Howden’s main instrument is violin and he is entirely self-taught. The premise and spirit of Sieben is layers - layers of instrument and voice that hypnotically draws you into a world of emotion. Intelligent, quirky use of metaphor and archaic language is set against a backdrop of texture rich music. Whilst, Sieben is frequently classified as neofolk, goth or experimental the music, and the man, could be as well described as alternative, indie, beautiful, brilliant, melancholic freak folk - but best described as unique. Formed by aggression and pain the aptly titled 'Pain Implantation' is probably a good description of the music, given the focus of the approach.
Sparse and suffocating atmospheres float forth while distorted sicken tones are injected. The music throughout the disc pounds on your skull without mercy and then slows down before the next eruption, ripping through your ears jamming them with feedback and beats tearing the mind apart.
Every track has a nerve grating, tympanic membrane agitating attraction, sonically careens off of the interior fortress of the body.
