The new album from ATF is a homage to H. P. Lovecraft. It is to be used as background atmospherics for rites dedicated to Cthulhu Mythos. Instrumentation includes singing bowls, flutes, rattles, synths and a large chunk of meat set upon with knives, machetes and a pitchfork. The result is a combination of acoustic and electronic textures that attempt to induce the listener into a receptive state of consciousness to be used as he or she sees fit. It is a sonic tool. Three compositions were named using cut-ups or 'The Call Of Cthulhu' by HPL, except the second composition, which was created as a soundtrack for the film 'Kalibration Of Thee Gods' by Madguten. "Allgrena is a project run by Austrian composer Franz Nigl circulating in spheres between ambient and industrial. Present album is the second effort from Allgrena, the first being "Tonräder" released on the same label in 1999. An important part of the textures is field recordings of metal-objects and similar industrial noises and drones. Favourite moment is the atmospheric piece titled "Wachsende ringe" that opens with dramatic flute-like high-freq sounds followed by echoed male speaks with distorted guitar and crushing noise-drones operating in the deeper levels. Some tracks are made up of threatening collages and experimental loops... other tracks are surrounded by melancholic soundscapes and dark bass-drones inspired by desperation and total sadness. Lutz Rach has spent years working with sounds to create thick layers and drones that have never surfaced in his music before. This is no longer pure dark ambient music... it is enriched by industrial sounds, the experimental use of classical instruments, vocal samples and an overall cry against isolation. Psychophysicist is the fruit of an ambitious collaboration between Adi Newton (Clock Dva, TAGC) and Andrew McKenzie (The Hafler Trio), two giants in the field of electronic music. Psychophysics was developed by Gustave Fechner, who believed that science and technology had made man materialistic and indifferent to spiritual matters. The recordings on this CD are aimed to stimulate and aid the expansion of consciousness and relaxation of physiological tensions. Our aim was to create a recording which could be used for these purposes. This is the true aim of psychophysics, the attainment of body and spirit.
