Looking Glass:
Samplers are always nice to get. This allows
us to overview the artists and the different musical genres that a label
is promoting. It also means a wide variety of styles and sounds which
is very pleasant as far as I‚m concerned. Cold Spring Records do
have more than one musical direction but they all basically fall into
the category of modern / artistic with an underground / alternative approach,
much to my pleasure. On Swarm, you‚ll hear quite a few experimental/
electronics / industrial & more abstract material such as: Andrew
Lilies "Seaman of Giordano Giosus the Unsuspecting Landlord",
Band of Pain "Swelled and Spent" and the sexually explicit Schloss
Tegal "Coital Affirmation (A.C.E. Remix). The ambient aspect of the
art is well represented by Fredrik Klingwall "Come Inside",
Tenhornedbeast "Archangel" and the dark number mixing spaced
out keys and Gregorian chant named "The Serpent Spiral" . Being
an acoustic guitar player, I could only fall for the neo-folk compositions
just like the excellent and sadly somber "Herdfeuer" by Bleiburg,
the avant-gardist "Adoration to Europa" from Von Thronstahl
and the patriotic hymn by H.E.R.R. called "Stalingrad". I must
say that those neo folk are my overall favorites. Swarm contains lots
of surprises and hearing pleasures recorded by adventurous European artists.

Cold Spring's 60th release is a double CD
featuring 22 artists from their roster, each presenting one track. This
label compilation gives an excellent overview what this Northants, UK
based label has to offer. Ranging from bombastic tracks influenced by
Laibach, such as the opening track by Kreuzberg Ost or Shinjuku Thief
to dark ambient contributed by Andrew Liles and Necropolis, ambient noise
(Merzbow/Nordvargr), political pounding noisescapes by Clear Stream Temple
or the monumental cinematic interlude by Fredrik Klingwall.
Even the dark folk wave by Bleiburg feat.
Werkraum and Von Thronstahl, reminding of Death in June as well as Goethes
Erben fits in the concept of this diversified compilation. Even a remix
by early 80's formation ZosKia can be found here. CD Two sort of continues
where CD One left off; a lovely mix of various industrial styles. Most
of the songs are dark, but offer a lovely diversity, due to which this
collection of songs never looses it's attraction. Several less known bands
such as Sistrenatus, Sleep Research Facility, Goatvargr and Tenhornedbeast
prove they can deliver the quality and live up to the expectations, being
featured amongst well-known industrial Cold Spring formations such as
Von Thronstahl, Werkraum or Schloss Tegal. |

A project like “Swarm” can't
be planned by anyone. The differences between the artists, the abyss that
opens song to song, and yet the absolute sense of belonging that the compilation
creates means that there is something more than what you can measure with
sight or ear. In a world were there are no rules, where creativity opens
all doors, everyone that creates with honesty can claim their membership.
From the dense industrial landscapes, to a walk inside dark nightmares
and the awakening to glorious dawns, “Swarm” is the land where
the doors are open and you are welcome inside, however different you may
be. The bellicose Kreuzweg Ost and the minimalist noise of Merzbow with
Nordvagr; the impersonal violence of Zos Kia and the cinematographic Sleep
Research Facility; the tainted beauty of A Challege of Honour and the
folk hoarseness of Von Thronstahl; the noise of Band of Pain confronting
the plain melodies of HERR... With every song, a new promise blooms, watered
by a Cold Spring. |

El interesante sello Cold Spring tuvo la
cortesía de enviarme este cd doble con temas exclusivos para esta
compilación de 22 de sus artistas, los cuales se pasean en estilos
desde el ambient minimalista, dark folk, industrial militarista y experimentos
varios. Trataré de ser lo mas sintético posible en cada
tema, algunos merecen un gran análisis a decir verdad.
El disco 1 parte con Kreuzwe Ost, con un tema muy potente
con percusiones muy marcadas, samples y sonidos orquestales de sintetizadores
creando una atmósfera militar y de victoria muy fuerte, un tema
, especial para fans de Arditi y similares. Luego la bizarra experimentación
de Andrew Liles, ambient muy minimalista acompañado de ruidos indescriptibles
y algunas voces en extremo distorsionadas, las cuales en vez de dar un
mensaje lírico al tema, sólo son "un ruido más"
dentro de su oscura música. Shinjuku Thief presentan un tema grabado
en vivo, con muchos aires de soundtrack hollywoodense, mezclando elementos
tribales (voces y percusión) más pinceladas industriales
y noise, finalizando con sonidos muy leves y minimalistas, se nota la
influencia de su origen (Australia). Merzbow y Nordvarg en colaboración
contribuyen con un corte 100% noise ambient , atmósfera ruidosa
pura, hipnótica, cada vez tornándose más caótica,
que me atrevo a decir puede tornarse hasta desagradable para oídos
no acostumbrados al estilo, finalizando de una manera que invita al trance
con sonidos casi subliminales. Clear Stream Temple siguen la tónica
noise, incluyendo samples vocales, además de una voz narrada muy
distorsionada, cercana al black metal, mas poderosas y brutales percusiones
a tiempos medios, agregando atmósferas sintetizadas en el fondo
de la amalgama sonora, todo muy bien cohesionado. Un corto tema estilo
soundtrack de suspenso/horror con un giro muy emotivo nos ofrece Fredrik
Klingwall con su "Come Inside" , increíble como en tan
sólo 1:08 min. logra evocar tanto, realmente nos invita a entrar
a su creación. John Watermann nos introduce a la electrónica
glitch(estilo presente en Ulver en "Teachings in Silence", creo
que esa es una buena referencia para los lectores de este webzine), un
feeling de misterio rodea el tema. Luego el CD toma un giro totalmente
dark/folk con la triple colaboración de Bleiburg , más Werkraum
en voces, guitarra acústica, percusión y coros, además
de Von Thronstahl en electrónica. Lirícas en alemán
en un bello tema con pasajes bastante majestuosos. Volvemos al castigo
sonoro con Zos Kia, noise caótico sobre oscuros sonidos de cuerdas.
Necropolis nos lleva al ambient puro y etéreo, sonido desolador
con tintes religiosos provocados por bellas voces corales, un verdadero
soundtrack para parajes solitarios donde ningún alma transita.
El primer cd de este gran compilado finaliza con el ataque de Deadwood,
apocalíptico noise/industrial con voces agónicas susurrantes,
un feeling infernal y enfermizo.
El 2º disco de este tremendo compilado da inicio con Sistrenatus,
noise/ambient con toques industriales "cyber", sonidos de acoples
y una marcha dando la sensación de un peligro inmimnente. Seguimos
con Sleep Research Facility, ambient muy minimalista nacido como experimento
para tratar el insomnio crónico, aquí nos encontramos con
sonidos que nos hacen entrar en un estado de sopor y relajación
transportándonos al mundo onírico. Von Thronstahl nuevamente,
pero esta vez en solitario aporta al CD Nº 2 con "Adoration to Europa
(Fok Version)", el título ya nos dice mucho de para donde
va la cosa, un bello himno al viejo continente con guitarras acústicas,
voces dark con mucho reverb, con partes intensas y algo de guitarras eléctricas
sumando un emotivo solo. Goatvargr nos retorna al denso noise/ambient
con toques de glitch y aires a MZ-412 con las clásicas percusiones
monótonas industrialoides, muy denso. El proyecto húngaro
Kriegsfall – U, a continuación nos muestra un tema difícil
de clasificar, empezando con samples que asumo son de alguna película
húngara, mezclando lo ambient y orquestal en un principio pasando
a elementos mas industriales con muy buenos sonidos percutivos entremezclados
perfectamente con lo orquestal mientras casi subliminalmente se suman
más sonidos, siendo el track de cierta manera cíclico en
sus sonoridades, muy bueno. Sonidos de catacumbas que van in crescendo,
atmósferas de pesadilla y saturación nos ofrecen gentilmente
Tenhornedbeast en su tema "Archangel", excelente track. A Challenge
of Honour nos lleva a la electrónica más dulce que a ratos
me recordó a Nattefrost (el proyecto danés, no el vocalista
de los noruegos Carpathian Forest), como haciéndonos despertar
de la pesadilla anterior, con melodías de sintetizadores que nos
apaciguan, también recordándome a los temas mas dulzones
de la etapa ambient de Burzum. Glitch y extraños ruidos mezclados
con sonidos densos e hipnóticos, tratando de dejarnos en estado
cata tónico parece ser la intención de Band of Pain con
"Swelled and Spent". Werkraum nos transporta a lo épico
militarista e industrial , con voces al estilo de bandas como Skinny Puppy
Schloss Tegal más noise ambient con samples de voces, que parecen
transmisiones espaciales o quizás de más allá. H.E.R.R.
se encarga de cerrar el CD con "Stalingrad" un tema acústico
y folk, muy extraño para lo que ha sido toda esta compilación,
ya que se trata de un tema bastante convencional y alejado de lo que tenía
entendido hacía esta banda, a excepción por la temática
lírica, algunas percusiones militaristas y una pequeña intervención
de vientos.
Un sello con mucho que ofrecer a quienes posean una mente
abierta, muchos "metaleros" se que gustan de estos estilos y
otros tantos pueden introducirse al gran mundo que se han estado perdiendo,
algunas recomendaciones personales de lo que está incluido en este
compilado: Kreuzweg Ost, Andrew Liles, Fredrik Klingwall, Deadwood, Sleep
Research Facility, Kriegsfall-U , Tenhornedbeast... en fin, todo lo que
diga será subjetivo y sólo los invito a descubrir por ustedes
mismos lo que nos ofrece este gran sello. |

In the course of 16 years, Cold Spring has
evolved into one of the most influential post-industrial labels, with
dozens of classic releases. Since its establishment in 1990, the British
born label has come around an impressive span of musical styles and expressions.
Swarm does certainly prove that! Being a double CD the albums offers almost
two hours of music for the price of a single disc. Swarm contains a mixture
styles covering martial industrial, dark ambient, noise, neo-folk, drones,
orchestral filmic to experimental. Presenting a line up of 22 artists,
some of whom have already had releases out on Cold Spring and others whose
work is still forthcoming, the compilation gives the listener an image
of the history and the future of the label. Every track has been composed
exclusively for this compilation. Disc one opens dramatically with Austrian
trio Kreuzweg Ost and their neoclassical piece "Ein neuer krieg"
based on martial rhythm texture and German speech. Followed by Andrew
Liles and his soothing blend of experimental electronics, ambient and
neo-folk the style continues with Shinjuki Thief and a live version of
the "Sacred Fury" from last year album with the same title.
After this fairly polite opening, the sonic threats begins with the dense
track "Partikel MN2" of suppressed power electronics delivered
as a joint venture between two masters of abrasive expression, Merzbow
and Nordvargr. Things get even worse with the full-throttle aggressive
ode to the American actions in Fallujah, the excellent track "Division"
by Clear Stream Temple mixing Arabic style with heavy percussion and harsh
noise explosions. Another noise assault is established during the end
of first disc where Deadwood puts and to the first disc with "The
serpent spiral" based on slow voices and low frequency power electronics.
Quite a few tracks of astonishing ambient occurs on the album. Especially
Sleep research Facility impresses with the drone-based piece of subliminal
soundscapes. Quite remarkable is also the beautiful track "At dawn
we meet our maker" by Dutch project "A Challenge Of Honour"
and the cinematic piece of ambient by Fredrik Klingwall. Other great moments
come from Von Thronstahl and his moody neo-folk strumming tune "Adoration,
to Europa" and Band Of Pain's creepy tones of dark drones. With its
impressive span of styles and high quality contributions, Swarm is a convincing
double disc anthology that will satisfy a wide range of electronic music
listeners. Fans won't be disappointed meanwhile newcomers will be happily
surprised. Highly recommended! |

A few years after the compilation "Chamber",
UK's Cold Spring Records now comes with a new label sampler. Perhaps the
growth of the label is symbolized by the fact that we are now treated
to a double cd. Swarm gathers 22 artist who released or will release material
on Cold Spring. And the good news is that all tracks were recorded specifically
for this collection.
`Swarm' has a very bombastic start, with a powerful marching track
by Kreuzweg Ost. It is followed by a very intriguing mournful soundscape
by Andrew Liles, after which Shinjulu Thief offers a live version of "Sacred
thief" with incredibly heavy pounding drums and symphonic music.
These are also my favourites on disc one, which also includes some dense
noisy stuff by Merzbow/Nordvargr, Clear Stream Temple and Deadwood, filmic
ambient by Fredrik Klingwall and Necropolis, avantgarde stuff by John
Watermann and Zos Kia and a folky neo-classical hymn by Bleiburg.
New talent Sistrenatus opens the second disc with a slow and heavy
martial piece that makes me curious for their upcoming debut. Further
we can expect some solid drone ambient by Sleep Research Facility and
Schloss Tegal, good noisy stuff by Goatvargr, deep soundscapes by Tenhornedbeast
and Band of Pain and an elegant neo-classical piece by A Challenge of
Honour. The folky songs by Von Thronstahl and Werkraum do not belong to
their most essential work, the martial hymn by Kriegsfall-U is a bit too
bombastic for me. A surprising ending to the cd is HERR's `Stalingrad',
a catchy melodic folk song with a clear 60's feel.
Not every track on "Swarm" is a direct hightlight, but
this friendly priced compilation certainly offers good value for money
from one of the most interesting labels.

Het Engelse "Cold Spring records"
is voor hen die houden van post-industrial en neo-folk achtige geluiden
ongetwijfeld een bekende naam. Voor hen is dit album, met twee cd's, 22
tracks van Cold Spring artiesten, 22 exclusieve tracks wel te verstaan.
Maar daarmee is het ook direct voor hen die Cold Spring niet kennen, maar
willen weten wat er allemaal gebeurt op dit label. Een overzicht op twee
schijfjes, dat vooral laat horen hoe gevarieerd het label is in muziekstijlen
en hoe constant als het gaat om kwaliteit.
Alleen volstaan met de grote namen op dit
album (Nordvargr, Von Trohnstahl, Sleep Research Facility, Shinjuku Thief,
Schloss Tegal, Merzbow) werkt natuurlijk niet. Net zo min als zeggen dat
er Nederlanders op staan (H.E.R.R.) of dat het allemaal zo goedkoop is.
We moeten gewoon over de muziek praten. Maar dat is altijd weer zo lastig
met zo'n verzamel-dubbelaar, er is zoveel. Maar goed laten we er dan mee
beginnen dat de eerste twee tracks nog wat saai zijn (Kreuzweg OST, Andrew
Liles), maar dat het album daarna loskomt. Eerst Shinjuku Thief dat het
nog vrij ambient houdt, maar al snel komt ook de zwaardere industrial-noise
soundscape op je af (Merzbow/Nordvarg) als luisteraar. Iets wat wordt
afgewisseld met meer folk-tracks, al blijven die nog wel duidelijke industrial-randjes
houden. Schijf twee begint direct indrukwekkend en verliest dat een beetje
bij Von Thronstahl, dat met "Adoration, To Europa (Folk Version)"
er wat mij betreft wat naast schiet, te vals. Maar dat als een enkele
missen van de elf tracks op dit schijfje is niet slecht zou ik toch zo
zeggen, want de draad wordt wel gewoon opgepakt door GoatVargr en een
live-track van het voor mij voorheen nog onbekende Kriegsfall-U. Goed
zo kan ik dus doorgaan. Basicly, koop dit album maar als je houdt van
post-industrial geluid. Meer voor de soundscape-liefhebbers dan voor de
neo-folkers, maar die laatsten vinden hier ook nog voldoende. Experiment
met electronica voldoende om vele hartjes sneller te doen kloppen. En
dat van mij blijft nog even hart kloppen wachtend op de komende cold spring
releases. |

Cold Spring entwickelt sich mit Bands wie
Herr, Kreuzweg Ost, Deadwood und Kriegsfall U langsam aber sicher zu einem
wirklich Ernst zu nehmenden Label für erstklassige Military Pop und
Industrial-Veröffentlichungen. Dieser Entwicklung trägt auch
die Ausgabe des „Swarm“ Samplers Rechnung, eine Doppel CD,
die neben den vorstehend genannten Bands solch richtungsweisende Acts
wie Shinjuku Thief, A Challenge of Honour, Von Thronstahl, Bleiburg, Merzbow/Nordvargr,
Werkraum, Schloss Tegal und einige weitere Bands und Projekte in sich
vereint und neben Industrial und Military Pop auch in Ambient- und Ritualbereiche
hineinreicht, wobei die teilnehmenden Bands ein unglaublich hohes musikalisches
Level garantieren. Wer sich als Neueinsteiger einen repräsentativen
und vor allem qualitativ hochwertigen Überblick über diese Musikrichtung
verschaffen will, der ist mit dieser CD bestens versorgt. |

Cold Spring records have over the years firmly
established themselves as one of top few labels in the 'post-industrial'
scene. Their releases have an incredibly high air and quality about them
and just knowing that a certain releases is on Cold Spring is pretty much
a guarantee that its going to be more than impressive, not only musically
but also aesthetically and presentation wise. Even from their easiest
years there has always been a feeling of excitement and trepidation with
the news that another Cold Spring release was coming and once it arrived,
it never failed to impress.
Covering a huge array of styles, tastes and
musical attributes, Cold Spring have churned out an impressive span of
releases which should have at least caught the vast majority of 'post-industrial'
fans, hook, line and sinker. Whist not every release they've put out will
appeal to everyone, as styles change from person to person, with the sheer
volume of quality releases they have put out it's a fair assumption if
they miss you with one release they'll get you with their next.
Over the last few years the label seems to have had a new
lease of life with a constant stream of new and highly impressive releases
pouring out from them and because if this have set themselves up in the
enviable position at the very top of the scene labels. With such a wide
array of releases currently being available and with many more in the
pipe-line, Cold Spring have released 'Swarm', their latest in the line
of label samplers. Showcasing an immensely impressive line up of 22 artists,
some of whom have already had releases out on the label and others whose
work is still forthcoming, 'Swarm' sets itself out almost instantly as
a compulsory release to own. With a line up of artist including Kreuzweg
OST, Andrew Liles, Shinjuku Thief, Zok Kia, Deadwood, Von Thronstahl,
a Challenge of Honour, H.E.R.R., Band of Pain, Schloss Tegal and Werkaum
amongst a hoard of other, 'Swarm' is a smorgasbord of who who in the dark
ambient, martial, neo-classical and post-industrial genres. Aside from
some of the more established artists whose' names should already by familiar
with most there's also the inclusion of new talents including Necropolis
who's dark ambient track 'Eudaimonia' is a shadowy and mysterious pleasure
to experience. Also included is perhaps one of the most impressive, alluring
and interesting projects to have surfaced in a long time - TenhornedBeast.
With their stunning dark ambient/drone track 'Archangel' they look set
to finally start getting the recognition that they fully deserve.
With styles and sounds changing from band
to band and track to track 'Swarm' just seems to keep on delivering the
goods and showcases why Cold Spring have forged such a mighty reputation
for themselves. As far as label compilations go, 'Swarm' is certainly
the 'cream of the crop' and one that shouldn't be over-looked at all.

Cuando a uno le cae entre manos un recopilatorio
como ‘Swarm’ se pregunta “¿Qué piensa
el dueño de Cold Spring Records cuando elige a un artista o a una
canción?”. La variedad de los temas, su procedencia diversa,
su estructuración heterogénea, su sonido dispar... y a la
vez esa extraña sensación de pertenencia a un mismo lugar.
Un sitio donde se destruye con el deseo de poder construir algo nuevo
e inexplorado, donde desaparecen los cánones que limitan, juzgan
y separan lo aceptado de lo diferente, como lo bueno de lo malo. Si hay
un hogar para esa libertad y disidencia, puedes vislumbrarlo a través
de ‘Swarm’ y acercarte un poco a ese mundo que entreabre tanta
amplitud de posibilidades que casi es normal que quede inexplorado...
lo desconocido siempre asusta y desconcierta. Aquí tienes una ventana
a ese espacio, al que nadie pertenece, porque no hay normas que excluyan.
Dos discos que recogen 22 temas de artistas que han trabajado
o trabajan con el sello inglés. Kreuzweg Ost abren el primer disco
con ‘Ein Neuer Krieg’ , una nueva guerra, que nos adentra
en un territorio bélico, donde las percusiones dominan todo el
tema, de carácter muy repetitivo, junto con la voz. Una melodía,
a la vez lánguida y gloriosa se pasea suavemente por encima de
las bases creando un espacio envolvente y absolutamente visual. Andrew
Liles , con ‘Sea man or Giordano Giosus the unsuspecting landlord’
es un paseo por abismos, ecos y tintineos, sonidos distorsionados, voces,
susurros: oscuro, atmosférico e hipnótico. Lanzará
un nuevo disco a través de Cold Springs antes de que acabe el año...
Shinjuku Thief , nos ofrece un tema grabado en vivo, ‘Saced Fury’
, trepidante: tribal y caberetero a la vez. Merzbow se une a Nordvagr
para lanzar ‘Partikel mn2’ , donde una sola nota puede estar
suspendida en una esfera mecánica e industrial; donde la insistencia
se convierte en un lugar compacto y espeso y cada ruido tiene su propia
personalidad, donde Masami Akita vuelve a defender su absoluta maestría
del ruido. Clear Stream Temple consigue una canción absolutamente
agresiva, expresiva y perturbadora, con un uso muy acertado de samplers,
ruido y percusiones. ‘Division (city of mosques)’ es una alegoría
del sinsentido de la guerra, de las voces enmudecidas por el estruendo,
de las palabras perdidas en la amalgama que queda abandonada tras la destrucción.
Frederik Klingwall nos trae ‘Come inside’, casi
la promesa de una balada melancólica, pero atravesada por el miedo.
Lo recoge ‘Whispering walls (Si_Comm remix)', de John Waterman,
un tema que nos puede recordar al de Liles, muy atmosférico y ambiental,
lleno de sonidos serpenteantes y viscosos, acechando en la oscuridad.
La banda sonora para una pesadilla de la que despierta un niño
en la negrura, y siente algo arrastrándose sobre su cuerpo que
permanece, inquietamente y obligadamente, inerte.
Llega la claridad de la voz de Werktraum, con la composición
de Bleiburg y la colaboración de Von Thronstahl: un tema de dark
folk creada por guitarras limpias y luminosas, un timbal resonante, y
un recitado impecable. ‘Herdfeuer (reburned)’ es uno de los
temas más asequibles del disco, y está lleno de una gran
belleza y una aparente simpleza que llena al tema de naturalidad.
Zos Kia, con su mezcla alternativa de ‘Ten Miles High’
nos introduce en un mundo mecánico, donde los instrumentos tradicionales
se rebelan hacia un sonido industrial y casi dañino: la tortura,
la violencia y la desesperación bajo una capa aséptica e
impersonal. En su contra, ‘Eudaimonia’, de Necropolis, abre
con unos coros de resonancias eclesiásticas para acabar en un lugar
vasto, vacío, donde una voz puede significar la esperanza. Deadwood
es como un despertar inesperado, y con su ‘The Serpent Spiral’
introduce unas bases contundentes y enérgicas, un industrial que
cruza constantemente la línea entre ser rítmico y ambiental.
En el segundo disco encontramos Sistrenatus con su ‘IV’
un tema ascendente, donde una melodía de viento parece que vaya
acercando sonidos bélicos poco a poco, sobre una percusión
repetitiva y compleja, donde hay ruidos que entran y salen. El tempo lento
que mantiene le otorga una sensación más opresiva y decadente,
creando un corte realmente absorbente. Le sigue Sleep Research Facility,
que con su ‘82ºS 45ºE’ consigue un tema de carácter
atmosférico y cinematográfico. Naturalmente la entrada de
Von Thronstahl es obvia. Los sonidos limpios de guitarra donde la voz
llena de ecos canta un himno a esa Europa unida que llena el sueño
de muchos. ‘Adoration, To Europa’ (Folk version)' es una tema
de folk bajo un prisma retorcido y distorsionado, lleno de guiños
rockeros, creado con gran fuerza. Goatvargr nos trae ‘Lycanthopic’
un corte ruidista, repetitivo e industrial. Va creando un crescendo que
llena de inquietud y violencia el tema, manteniendo un gran trabajo de
percusión. Los húngaros Kriegsfall-U abren su ‘Crisis
and catharsis’ con samplers, que llevan a un buen trabajo ambiental
donde acaban irrumpiendo percusiones marciales. Mantienen la línea
de su album debut, con un dark ambient lleno de grandiosidad, elocuencia
y ritmos bélicos.
Tenhornedbeast nos trae otro buen trabajo de darkambient,
arrítimico e industrial. Desde sus comienzos con Endvra, Christopher
Walton se ha vuelto incluso más oscuro y parece que exprima cada
sonido, alargándolo y modificándolo. Esperamos con gran
curiosidad su nuevo disco, previsto para este año. Como un absoluto
contrapunto nos llega ‘At dawn we meet our maker’ de la formación
holandesa A Challege of Honour, un tema lleno de sonidos tan melancólicos
como bellos, que se alza como un cántico épico lleno de
imágenes contraductorias.
Steve Pittis, bajo el nombre de Band of Pain nos trae ‘Swelled
and spent’: un tema lleno de detalles, capas y pequeños añadidos
y arreglos que consiguen un trabajo de ambient sobresaliente, con toques
analógicos, samplers, ruidos, y una exaltación del detalle.
Werkraum abre con un tono absolutamente marcial donde entran baterías,
percusiones y voces, conviertiendose en un tema de diversas aristas: dark
folk, marcial, ambient y spoken word. Le sigue Schloss Tegal, que con
su ‘Coital Affirmation ( Artifical Coital Equipment Remix)’
vuelve a subrayar su capacidad de sorprender en el ámbito ruidista
e industrial, y se reafirma como formación de culto jugando con
samplers vocales y capas de sonidos entrelazados. Otra de las formaciones
que presentarán disco este año... HERR son los elegidos
para cerrar el recopilatorio con ‘Stalingrad’, un tema lleno
de promesas: folk tradicional con una voz luminosa y clara, con una trabajada
instrumentación.
Quizá la respuesta la tenga el mismo Justin Mitchell,
alma de Cold Springs: “Over the years, Cold Spring has garnered
a back catalogue of music from individuals and groups otherwise ignored
by the mainstream – people whose very thought, actions and creations
have seen them ostracised (sometimes literally) by the modern society.
For these reasons, the label has a special flavour of beauty and yet extremity
– of politics, art and thought that the modern world consider dangerous,
seditious and even revolutionary. Some call the releases the ‘soundtrack
to the end of the world’; I prefer to see them as examples of the
true cutting edge, of what mankind can create when pushing the limits
society places on imagination, through the barriers of what’s supposedly
right and wrong, crude and offensive, poignant and beautiful”. Sin

Probabilmente è solo per non aver
battuto apertamente la Cia Oscura e, soprattutto, per una minore espoizione
grafica (leggi: artwork spesso anonimi) se la Cold Spring è meno
nota al grosso pubblico di un'altra label "fredda" quella di
Karmanik. Muovendosi fra industrial estremo, dark ambient, rumore esoterico
e marziale, la label inglese (che vi abbiamo presentato a fondo, anche
in formato audio, sul n. 19), rispetto alla CMI et similia, ha mantenuto
un aplomb intellettuale ed underground, anche se il momento di farsi sentire
sta arrivando. Anticipa il nuovo corso questo sampler, coraggioso, perché
presenta una ricca serie di nomi all'esordio, e interessante, vista la
totalità di brani inediti, anche per nomi dormienti da secoli.
Il CD1 è più vario, con i sempre interessanti Kreuzweg Ost,
i maestosi e neoclassici Shinjuku Thief, Clear Stream Temple, che offre
una visione al femminile del martial industrial, il ritorno di Zos Kia,
già collaboratore dei Coil e il neo folk alla DIJ di Bleiburg.
Il secondo è più ambient ed oscuro, forse minore, con inediti
di Von Thronstahl, acustici ed effettati, gli inquietanti Schloss Tegal,
Tenhornedbeast, con ex Endura, il dark ambient di Sistrenatus, Werkraum,
uno dei migliori nomi del neo folk ed altri. Un consigliatissimo concentrato
di inquietudini.

Tenemos ante nosotros una muestra musical
de los planteamientos musicales del sello británico Cold Spring.
En su recorrido podemos apreciar claramente cual es la idea que subyace
en las producciones de este sello. Su catálogo es muy variado en
cuanto a estilos musicales aunque siempre abarcando propuestas muy arriesgadas.
Los estilos aquí presentes oscilan entre el Dark Folk, la música
marcial, el Industrial (no bailable), el Noise y el Dark Ambient.
Empezando por el Dark Folk nos encontramos con varias propuestas.
La primera es la que realiza Bleiburg en colaboración con Werkraum
y Von Thonstahl. Presentan el tema 'Herdfeuer (Reburned)', en una línea
clásica al estilo Strenght Through Joy aunque con letra en alemán
y toda la canción recitada. Le sigue la propuesta de Von Thronstahl
en solitario, con el tema 'Adoration, to Europa (Folk Versión)'.
Está configurada como un himno paneuropeo, con alabanzas constantes
a la entidad que supone el continente europeo, una declaración
de principios. Basado prácticamente en la guitarra acústica,
aunque también se toma libertades como la inclusión de guitarra
eléctrica. Werkraum presenta el tema 'A Lutte des Jeunes', Folk
pero con connotaciones marciales, tema bastante original para lo trillado
que está el género, también recitado, con ecos y
muy grandilocuente. Podríamos englobar dentro de esta categoría
la propuesta de A Challenge of Honour, por su estilo global más
que por el tema presentado, 'At Dawn we meet our Maker', instrumental,
todo sintetizado con una melodía bastante dulce, aderezada en su
tramo final con trompetas y un timbal. No es un tema demasiado llamativo.
Este apartado se cierra con el tema de H.E.R.R., 'Stalingrad', uno de
los mejores dentro de esta categoría. Muy melódico y alejado
de los estereotipos del estilo.
Entramos ahora con los temas marciales. Estaría por
una parte Kreuzweg Ost, con el tema 'Ein Neur Krieg', donde quizá
desmerece un poco el apartado vocal, que no tiene la fuerza suficiente
para acompañar a una propuesta musical muy contundente. Tira un
poco de los consabidos samplers en alemán y de valkirias que dan
el toque de elevación al tema. Por otra parte está Kriegsfall-U
con un tema algo reiterativo y monótono, con guiños al industrial
en el enriquecimiento musical del tema. Además es un tema instrumental,
lo que lo hace si cabe más pesado aún. Quizá dentro
de esta categoría quepa el tema 'IV (Remix)' de Sistrenatus, casi
un himno configurado con instrumentos sinfónicos pero con una pesada
percusión a lo largo del tema.
Hay un tema aislado con connotaciones casi neoclásicas,
fílmicas más bien diría yo, que es 'Come Inside'
de Fredrik Klingwall. Otro corte que se queda fuera de clasificación
pero que quizá haya que englobarlo junto a estos primeros temas
es la propuesta de Shinjuku Thief con su tema 'Sacred Fury'. Construído
con samplers y un poco de percusión que no llega a ser propiamente
marcial. Es sin duda el tema más personal del CD y hace justicia
a un grupo de tan larga y fructífera trayectoria como es Shinjuku
Thief.
En el apartado Noise hay que mencionar a uno de los grandes,
Merzbow, esta vez en compañía de Nordvargr. Quizá
sea la colaboración el que la pieza presentada, 'Partikel MN2',
no siga la línea más potente y agresiva que acostumbra Merzbow.
Es un pasaje sonoro construido a base de ruidos pero casi minimalista.
Otro grupo que cabría dentro del Noise es Zos Kia, con 'Ten Miles
High', en el que combina sonidos de instrumentos de cuerda con diversos
ruidos.
Ahora viene el turno para el Industrial. Clear Stream Temple
presenta un tema muy agresivo, 'Division (City of Mosques)', con una parte
muy potente con golpes sonoros vibrantes, pero seguido de una parte más
suave con samplers de voces cantando en árabe. Otro dentro de esta
categoría es Deadwood, con 'The Sepent Spiral', menos contundente
que el anterior y algo monótono. Goatvargr también presenta
un tema industrial, 'Lycanthropic', muy uniforme, no de mis favoritos.
Por último nos queda hablar del apartado Dark Ambient.
Hay que mencionar que se tratan en general de propuestas menos góticas,
entendiendo por esto el gusto medievalista, del estilo encuadrado en la
Cold Meat Industry, por ejemplo Schloss Tegal, con 'Coital Affirmation',
un ambient sucio con samplers vocales a lo largo del tema. También
está Andrew Liles con un tema minimalista, con una melodía
repetitiva y algunos elementos robóticas, más espacial.
Muy interesante es el tema de John Watermann, 'Whispering Walls', con
unos sonidos que parecen bestias del abismo como dragones o serpientes
sumergidos en un universo futurista. Muy curioso. Como excepción
hay un tema con rasgos góticos como mencionaba anteriormente, es
el tema de Necrópolis 'Eudaimonia', con una coral casi gregoriana
planeando sobre ambientes bastante minimalistas. Sleep Research Facility
hace una propuesta más abstracta con un pasaje sonoro continuo
con diversas modulaciones en el sonido. Y cerramos esta sección
con uno de los mejores temas, propuesto por Tenhornedbeast, 'Archangel',
con una atmósfera inquietante y sonidos guturales.
Y esto es lo que da de si este doble recopilatorio en el que
Cold Spring destapa el tarro de sus esencias. Muy indicado para aquellos
oyentes ávidos de oscuridad en una línea muy poco convencional,
para oídos exigentes e inconformistas con las propuestas más
ortodoxas dentro del sonido oscuro. También una buena manera de
aproximarse al profundo y desgarrador mundo que nos propone Cold Spring. |

Cold Spring Records should need no introduction:
they the cult UK purveyors of quality underground post industrial sounds.
Yet if they do remain an unknown quantity, please do not let a mere technicality
put you off.
Consisting of a double disc sampler of exclusive tracks, ‘Swarm’
has the ability to appeal in a twofold manner. For those whom are already
a fan of the label, it will wet the appetite for tracks from current artists
as well as new talent on the label, whilst for those unfamiliar with Cold
Spring it is a perfect introduction to the stellar roster of artists.
A huge array of sounds are captured here: the neo-classical
bombast of Kreuzweg Ost, Shinjuku Thief, Fredrik Klingwall, Kriegsfall-U,
A Challenge of Honour & H.E.R.R: the experimental electronics of Andrew
Liles, & John Watermann; the harsh noise/ power electronics of Merzbow/
Nordvargr, Deadwood & Goatvargr, the political tinged heavy industrial
sounds of Clear Stream Temple: the death industrial tones of Sistrenatus,
the neo-folk ethos of Bleiburg, Von Thronstahl, & Werkraum: the ritual
industrial tones of Zos Kia: and finally the vast array of expansive dark
ambient spheres of Necropolis, Sleep Research Facility, TENHORNEDBEAST
& Schloss Tegal.
Barely doing justice to the quality and scope of this release
(given it is merely a who’s who of the featured artists), if your
interest is at least provoked surely this is an opportunity to discover
many musical gems that span the two discs |

This great double disk compilation, really
highlights, the high quality of material released by uk label cold spring
, in the areas of dark ambient, Neo-classical,Neo-folk, industrial, noise
and experimental music. One can easily say, from what’s on offer
here, that they are one of the top labels,in these musical areas.
The other great thing about this compilation is its all new
and unreleased stuff, which makes of interesting for those of you, who
are already familiar with the label’s output. You get hold of, unreleased
tracks of artist you enjoy and make new discoveries of what to hunt down
next. Of the artist's I hadn’t heard before, the ones that really
stuck out were: Clear Stream Temples 'Division (City of Mosques)'; which
is a great mix of eerier ambiance and industrial rhythmic heavy noise,
that mixes in radio reports and a narrative voice dealing with the bombing
on a Middle Eastern city. Then there's lush foreboding cinematic string
work of Fredrik Klingwall’s 'Come inside'. The Deep dark spacey,ambient
tones of Sleep facility’s '82ºS 45ºE', that is akin to drifting
though vast space cannons. The tuneful neo folk strumming of Von Thronstahl
'Adoration, to Europa'.
As for old favourites : Merzbow offers up an electroncai tinged
noisescape, with his collaboration with Nordvargh, it's a track that's
heavy with cold machine like tones, that will still apeal to none noise
heads, due to it's quite subdued quilty. Goatvargr oozes out another superb
slice of morbid, occult tinged atmosphere, heady with sinister intensions,
like looking though a gateway that leads into a hellish land scape, where
bodies join then rip apart with the sound of snapping flesh. Band of Pain's
creepy, implied torturess tones; stain your listening space with black
oily dread.
All in all well worth a look, a perfect example of how all
label compilations should be. Balancing quality and variation perfectly,
and of course makes a wonderful introduction to the lable.

Cold Spring Records have here compiled a collection
of their finest music for us listeners. On this collection (a DCD) we
will find both new and old artists, collaborations between artists and
a new world of music.
The focus is laid upon neofolk, noise and ambient music, which
is Cold Springs main genres. The mix of artists feels fresh and I think
the whole collection holds a pace. Sometimes a record like this can feel
a bit dull but I think that this is not the case here. Very good indeed.

Mit "Swarm" steht der aktuelle
Labelsampler von Cold Spring Records ins Haus, der dem geneigten Hörer
die Bandbreite der Labelacts näher bringen soll. Doch die Tatsache,
daß alle 22 Tracks exklusiv für diesen Sampler produziert wurden,
macht diese Doppel-CD nicht nur für Cold Spring Neulinge interessant.
Entsprechend dem Programm von Cold Spring
ist "Swarm" sehr abwechslungsreich, und so bekommt man schon
in den ersten 5 Tracks der CD 1 ein recht reichhaltiges Spektrum geboten.
Vom Martial Industrial von KREUZWEG OST, über ANDREW LILIES' Minimal-Electro
und das rituelle Neo-Folk-Stück "Sacred Fury" von SHINJUKU
THIEF geht es bis zum Noise-Ambient "Partikel Mn2", einer Kolaboration
des Japanischen Noise-Masterminds MERZBOW und des schwedischen Dark Ambient
Spezialisten NORDVARGR, um dann mit CLEAR STREAM TEMPLE schließlich
beim Industrial zu landen. Die Reise geht ähnlich weiter, und so
wird man von einem Genre zum nächsten gereicht, von bekannten Namen
zu Neulingen und von einer mystisch verträumten zu einer schreiend
aggressiven Atmosphäre.
Natürlich wird bei solch einer Mischung kaum jemand mit
allen Beiträgen etwas anfangen können, aber das ist ja auch
nicht Sinn der Sache. Dennoch sollte jeder fündig werden, der sich
musikalisch für diese kleine, aber feine Subkultur interessiert.
Die Tatsache, daß die komplette Doppel-CD in homogenem Sounddesign
daher kommt, ist sehr erfreulich, eine regelmäßige Lautstärkekorrektur
ist hier nicht von Nöten.

It will go without saying that any fan of
the black ambient / industrial world where Cold Spring releases can be
found nestling will snap this one up as the package, a double-disc affair
spanning 22 tracks, features nothing but exclusive tracks from the vast
majority of the label roster.
For those less familiar with this roster,
this collection is invaluable as an all-encompassing overview of the many
facets of the genre, each of which is handled by an artist who can encompass
the qualities of that particular area. So for music of a more experimental
nature, Andrew Liles provides a dark resonating discordance while John
Watermann's bleakly ethereal soundscapes provide a more unsettling type
of soundtrack. The collaboration between Werkraum and Von Thronstahl provides
for a haunting take on folk noir, the decisive vocals of the former fitting
neatly over a hint of a militaristic backing. Shinjuku Thief take on the
more commercial flavours of IDM, while the majority of the remainder focus
on suffocating black industrial (such as the rhythmical destruction of
Kriegsfall-U), while the likes of Goatvargr are content to do the sonic
brutality bit to its logical conclusion. |

Seguendo quanto già fatto da altre
etichette del circuito con fini promozionali, la Cold Spring propone un
sampler che raccoglie 22 tracce -registrate o remixate appositamente per
questa occasione- di altrettanti autori prodotti dalla label inglese.
Ciò che rende ampiamente appetibile questa release è il
fatto che la musica proposta spazia in molti generi della brown e grey
area, grazie all’apporto sia di nomi nuovi, come TenHornedBeast,
sia di nomi ormai noti, come Schloss Tegal e Werkraum, sia di progetti
famosi o storici, come A Challenge of Honour e Zos Kia. Last but not least,
l’acquisto è pressoché obbligato dato il prezzo contenuto
per un doppio CD dalla bella confezione cartonata apribile.
Tra i momenti migliori di questi 110 minuti di musica vi segnalo
l’industrial marziale di Kreuzweg Ost e di Kriegsfall U, l’ambient
oscura e ossessiva del neonato progetto Sistrenatus, il death industrial
dei Goatvargr (dietro cui si cela Henrik Nordvargr). Tra le più
curiose e interessanti tracce menziono la nuova “folk version”
–più rock che folk- di Adoration, to Europa di Von Thronstahl,
il brano degli H.E.R.R., dal sapore anni ’70; ma anche il minimalismo
del remix del compianto John Watermann e il brano di Zos Kia che rimanda
–mutatis mutandis- ad alcuni lavori dei Coil.
Un doppio CD necessario per seguire gli ultimi sviluppi della scena,
necessario per conoscere qualche nuovo progetto, fondamentale per chi
ama queste sonorità. |

Le label anglais Cold Spring, spécialisé
en musiques industrielles et dark ambient, a publié une assez fantastique
compilation de vingt-deux travaux exclusifs réalisés expressément
pour ce projet par les artistes signés sur la maison mère,
et mis sous pli par un packaging plutôt sommaire mais beau signé
O. Lomer.
L’ensemble de titres présents sur ce recueil sonore
présente un fort contraste interne et laisse augurer de la diversité
de genres qui peut s’exprimer sur ce label monté par le volontaire
Justin Mitchell et qui s’impose, aux côtés de CMI et
de Cyclic Law, comme un des fers de lance de cette scène austère
et à l’esthétique parfois très… rigoureuse,
disons le. Quoi qu’il en soit, l’ensemble des artistes présents
sur la double-compilation "Swarm" délivre des minutes
d’émotion très fortes, du pur dark ambient au néo-classique
en passant par le néo-folk. Au menu, et d’un point de vue
général : atmosphères méditatives, oppression
rythmique ou bruitiste (Sistrenatus avec "IV (Remix)", ou Goatvargr
avec le terriblissime "Lycanthrophic"), approches martiales
("Ein Neuer Krieg", de Kreuzweg Ost), ambiances tirant parfois
(mais rarement) vers le gothique (les voix réalisées sur
le très folk et posé "Adoration To Europa" de
Von Thronstahl, ici en compagnie de Rose Rovine E Amanti, tirent bel et
bien vers des effets de manches antérieurement signés Valor
Kand). La force de "Swarm" reste sans doute sa diversité
interne, capable de faire naviguer l’auditeur entre plages méditatives
pures (Band Of Pain - "Swelled And Spent"), abstractions atmosphériques
dessinant les abysses intérieures (Schloss Tegal - "Coital
Affirmation (A.C.E. Remix)"), ou opéra industriel (Shinjuku
Thief et l’énorme "Sacred Fury Live").
"Swarm", pris dans son ensemble, représente
à merveille et sans temps mort la philosophie d’ouverture
d’un label fondé au début des années 90 et
qui, outre le mérite d’avoir sorti des artistes aussi fondamentaux
que Laibach, Psychic TV, Archon Satani ou Merzbow, se dit toujours autant
intéressé par bien des choses : le Black/Dark Ambient, le
néoclassique ou les nouvelles musiques folk, orchestrales, le Power
Electonics/Noise, le bruitisme japonais, les sons minimaux, le Death Industrial,
les musiques expérimentales, et j’en passe. Alors…

Negli ultimi anni l'inglese CS ha saputo
proporsi come una delle etichette più valide e credibili in un'area
difficile come quella 'grey & brown', curando le uscite di gruppi
dall'altissimo potenziale in ambiti sonori come il neofolk, l'industrial
e la dark ambient (nelle loro più varie accezioni). La label britannica
vanta ormai nel proprio roster nomi di peso, ma al contempo non smette
di scovare nuovi talenti, ed in questa doppia raccolta (composta esclusivamente
da brani inediti ed esclusivi) ci propone un'ampia panoramica del recente
passato, del presente e del futuro del marchio CS. Ben 22 brani per altrettanti
artisti e/o band, oltre 110 minuti di sonorità oscure e severe:
scorrendo la tracklist ritroviamo nomi già trattati su queste pagine
come Deadwood (nera, malvagia e distorta industrial), Von Thronstahl (con
la bella 'folk version' di "Adoration, To Europa"), Kriegsfall-U
(possente la loro "Crisis And Catharsis", sinfonica e marzialindustriale),
A Challenge Of Honour (sempre in odore di soundtrack) ed H.E.R.R. (con
il bel momento folk "Stalingrad"), mentre si affacciano sulla
scena volti nuovi come Necropolis (dark ambient) e Sistrenatus (ambient
marziale e sinfonica, già sul mercato con un CDr). Molti gli artisti
operanti in ambito industrial, come il duetto Merzbow/Nordvargr, i malvagi
Clear Stream Temple, John Watermann, Zos Kia (ruotanti attorno ai Coil),
Goatvargr (side-project di Nordvargr) e Schloss Tegal, e non mancano i
nomi legati alla scuola (dark) ambient come Andrew Liles, Sleep Research
Facility, Tenhornedbeast e Band Of Pain. Da sottolineare le prove di Shinjuku
Thief (con la possente e marziale "Sacred Fury" catturata live),
Fredrik Klingwall (col breve ma intenso scorcio neoclassico "Come
Inside"), Bleiburg con Werkraum e Von Thronstahl (per una "Herdfeuer"
dai toni neofolk epici e maestosi) e degli stessi Werkraum (con una poderosa
"La Lutte Des Jeunes" che incarna lo 'spirito guerriero' del
neofolk). Una raccolta perfetta per chi deve ancora familiarizzare col
catalogo CS, ideale per chi si vuole avvicinare a queste sonorità
ed impedibile per chi già apprezza questa scena, vista l'indiscutibile
qualità dei brani inclusi. |

The new Cold Spring sampler is finally out,
and bears the menacing title of "Swarm". Expect an invasion
of older and newer noisy artists inside the two CDs hidden behind the
scary picture of a giant-sized bee. These 22 exclusive tracks are available
at a special price or sent away for free if you purchase other three titles
directly from the Cold Spring catalogue.
The first CD is introduced by KREUZWEG OST, who invite the listener
to march alongside the epic battle sceneries evoked by this much effective
"Ein Neuer Krieg". The Austrian duo is undoubtedly the new leading
act in the martial/orchestral field, together with labelmates H.E.R.R..
To follow is ANDREW LILES, with a very enigmatic and disturbing soundtrack-like
composition, dwelled by robot voices, minimal noises and gloomy keyboard
themes. Great Aussie SHINJUKU THIEF delivers probably the best episode
of the first CD, with an epic tribal ritual appropriately called "Sacred
Fury" (recorded live). Judging from the fame of the two guys involved,
superstars collaboration MERZBOW / NORDVARGR produces a rather quiet track,
revolving around low frequencies and distorted atmospheric sounds. More
the soundtrack to a journey inside your computer's CPU, rather than another
noise assault. More obscure and blurred soudscapes are created by FREDRIK
KLINGWALL and passed-away Aussie composer JOHN WATERMANN, while CLEAR
STREAM TEMPLE assemble a noisier yet average industrial track using Iraqi
war samples and assorted sampled noises.
Some melody emerges at last with a triangular collaboration between BLEIBURG,
WERKRAUM and VON THRONSTAHL. "Herdfeuer (Reburned)" is an epic
and convincing neofolk song, where Werkraum's melancholic vocals and acoustic
guitar merge perfectly with Von Thronstahl's melodramatic keyboard tunes.
It's unclear what's exactly Bleiburg's contribution to this track, but
anyway. Underground legend ZOS KIA emerges from the void after ages of
silence with a quite disturbing composition titled "Ten Miles High",
which revolves around distant, minimal sounds and noises. An outstanding
new entry is represented by NECROPOLIS, a Russian dark ambient entity
that creates heavenly (or hellish) sceneries with choruses from the hereafter
and bubbling strata of sounds. To close the first CD we find DEADWOOD,
two Swedes who finally managed to assemble a quite convincing track, after

is a bombastic power-electronics assault of loud frequencies, slow voices
and metal bashing (sounds like Genocide Organ's latest effort finally
succeeded in re-introducing metal percussions among the industrial audience).
Nothing new under the sun, but, at least, quite enjoyable.
The second CD is opened by the very promising SISTRENATUS,
who appears with a remixed track from his self-titled debut CDr released
last year. War machineries, alarm sirens and missiles hissing in the air
dwell the desolate scenario evoked by this next protagonist of the scene.
Freezing, alien landscapes melt before your eyes while listening to SLEEP
RESEARCH FACILITY, known for their 2001 debut released by Cold Spring
itself. The mysterious title "82°S 45°E" might correspond
to the coordinates of some unexplored world, wonderfully portrayed by
the gloomy strata of layered sound. My opinion towards VON THRONSTAHL
has always been ambivalent, but this time it seems Joseph and friends
hit the target. This folk version of "Adoration, To Europa"
is a convincing drunk and punky ballad. GOATVARGR is quite obviously the
joined effort of Nordvargr and Andy O' Sullivan, aka Goat, and provides
slow, monotonous noisy soundscapes. Hungary's KRIEGSFALL-U contribute
with "Crisis And Catharsis", a stunning symphony of epic doom
that clearly shows a lot of progress from last year's debut CD. Skeletal
strings and thundering drumming evoke never-ending battle sceneries with
surprising effectiveness.
Enigmatic TENHORNEDBEAST, of which no contact info is available,
create more mysterious subterranean ambience, whereas A CHALLENGE OF HONOUR
indulge in their solemn melodic approach with Autopsia-like keyboard tunes.
Another eerie track comes from BAND OF PAIN, a project that has been around
for quite a while now. "Swelled And Spent" could be still filed
under dark ambient, but of the most haunting and disturbing variety. After
so much obscurity, it's time for rising star WERKRAUM to bring some light
and solemn warrior melody with the stunning "La Lutte Des Juenes",
a magnificent hymn eons far from neofolk and any previous stereotype.
One last noisy moment is brought by American veterans SCHLOSS TEGAL, who
however this time prefer to drown into muddy soundscapes made of voice
samples. "Swarm" closes with H.E.R.R.'s contribution, an epic
and decadent ballad about Stalingrad that brings back the distinctive
marching sounds we've come to love on their striking debut CD last year.
From this shot of Cold Spring's roster, it seems that the
best acts at the moment are those next to the orchestral / martial industrial
area, such as Werkraum, H.E.R.R., Kreuzweg Ost and Sistrenatus, while
quite a few of the dark ambient or noise ones tend to sound just average.
On the whole this double CD is surely worth its price, much more if you
get it for free with an order directly from Cold Spring. |

Dark ambient/death industrial/neo classical/
post industrial. Call it what you want but this 22 track double cd scares
the shit out of me. Where atmosphere is more important than melody or
conventional structure and where said atmos is bleak, foreboding and wholly
unforgiving. It is often a rumbling in the background that you feel in
your stomach, unsettlingly bass heavy, like a horror movie where you know
something is going to jump out but you don't know when - and its all the
more excruciating when nothing does jump out 'cos you know that eventually
something‚s gonna get you. It is the waiting that we all truly fear.
It is unsurprising that a lot of these people are Germanic as the music
often gives off the whiff of Wagner - choirs swell and drums march and
strings soar - it is music of subtle confrontation. Looking at my notes,
I revisit themes of Japanese psychological horror movie soundtracks, of
deep rumbling vibrations, of driving percussion and of being genuinely
unsettled. But do not labour under the impression that this is a one trick
pony in 22 parts - the power here is the differences, not the similarities.
Bear witness to: Shinjuku thief with percussion rushing about in an almost
techno direction, the merzbow/nordvargr collaboration where the expected
power electronics are rendered impotent by the breathing being moving
towards you and then away again (the whole track bothered me so much that
I feared a brown sound intervention!), clear stream temple's magnificent
diatribe against the bullshit war with sampled news reports fighting to
be heard over bomb-led percussion, Necroplois' 'eudaimonia' - where the
Hilliard ensemble are butchered silently, deadwood's pain flecked soundscape
whereby I thought I had a migraine of truly head splitting proportions
or Kriegsfall-u, our Hungarian representatives who unleash a beast of
noise that removed all rational thought from my brain. And then added
strings. Weirdly enough, the tracks that sound the most genuinely bizarre
are the ones that swing closest to the 'conventional' music we are normally
assaulted with - von thronstahl's: adoration (folk version) for instance,
where we have such unexpected delights as acoustic guitar, rock drums,
dogs barking and a vocal not sounding unlike Bowie in his Baal period.
Or A challenge of honour, which has truly beautiful strings playing a
melody (oh yes!) of practically Peter Greenaway-esq proportions, really
lovely and gave me a feeling of hope amongst the sea of darkness. Which
is very strange when I listened to it again later -separate from all the
other tracks and it struck me as spectacularly sad and bleak. A true diamond
in the mouth of a corpse. This compilation is like nothing you‚ve
ever heard before - no matter what your musical background and I urge
you to seek it out. You may not listen to it often but I guarantee it
will affect you every time you do. |

Since its inception in 1988 Cold Spring has
established itself as a record label of distinction, and indeed it is
the UK's leading label for all sorts of dark music. Originally conceived
as a fundraiser for a TOPY access point, following the vinyl compilation
...And the Wolf Shall Lick The Jewels From Your Belly the label took on
a life of its own with a catalogue spanning some 60 titles. Besides operating
a highly efficient mail order service - a vital source for industrial
/ noise / ambient musics - the CEO Justin Mitchell has navigated the fortunes
of the label through attracting an impressive array of worldwide talent.
A highly developed philosophical viewpoint is almost a pre-requisite for
inclusion in the Cold Spring catalog, it certainly applies to the martial
acts such as HERR, Kriegsfall-U and the "controversial" Von
Thronstahl. And for a label synonymous with dark ambient / martial industrial
there's been forays into Japanese noise (Merzbow, Masonna, C.C.C.C.),
noise based electronics (Novatron) and Justin Mitchell's rearing in old
school industrial has ensured a steady supply of reissued material (and
retrospectives) from Psychic TV. Laibach, Crash Worship ADRV, Sutcliffe
Jügend, Streicher, The Grey Wolves amongst others. Even if all releases
haven't been to my tastes the packaging is impecable and they don't bother
with art or ultra limited editions. No sir, Cold Spring titles retail
at affordable prices.
Swarm is a taster from their current roster with 22 acts contributing
exclusive tracks. It's a mixture of the old and the new covering martial
industrial, dark ambient, noise, neo-folk, drones, orchestral filmic to
experimental. Kreuzweg OST, Kriegsfall-U and A Challenge of Honour all
provide variations on the martial industrial theme, Necropolis and Schloss
Tegal offer dark ambient, Andrew Liles, Tenhornedbeast and Band of Pain
offer drone based works of sorts, Shinjuku Thief and Fredrik Klingwall
operate in orchestral film score styled music, while Deadwood, Sistrenatus,
Goatvargr, Merzbow / Nordvargr bring the noise. HERR, Werkraum and Von
Thronstahl offer the neo-folk stylings with the latter two acts collaborating
under the name of Bleiburg. Sleep Research Facility and John Watermann
offer the more experimental pieces while Clear Stream Temple indulge in
political industrial electronics and ZosKia offer primitive industrial
culled from the mid-eighties.
It would be an ardous task to cover all the aforementioned but
I can confirm that the martial industrial tracks are solid representations
of the genre. It's interesting that both HERR and Von Thronstahl offer
more guitar based tracks. Von Thronstahl provide an acoustic reading of
'Adoration To Europa', while HERR offer a neo-classical folksong enititled
'Stalingrad'. Christopher Walton (formerly of Endura) resurfaces with
the deep menacing drones of Tenhornedbeast. Andrew Liles's 'Sea Man Or
Giordano Giosus The Unsuspecting Landlord' is effectively chilling, as
is 'Swelled and Spent' by Band of Pain where electronics blur and voices
emerge over sustained droning. The late John Watermann is represented
by a glitchy piece of cold electronics remixed by SI_Comm. John Gosling's
ZosKia project has an alternative version of 'Ten Miles High', the flip
to their 'Be Like Me' 12-inch on Temple Records. This is the first of
the ZosKia material to be aired on Cold Spring ahead of the retrospective
double CD set from the former Psychic TV member, who now records as Mekon
on the Wall of Sound label.
As a primer for the label it's necessary, and a mandatory purchase
for those already familiar with the label but hopefully the inclusion
of Andrew Liles, Merzbow, Band of Pain and ZosKia can attract the attention
of the casual buyer as there's a lot of worthwhile material to be found

Eine Begebenheit hat sich in den letzten
Jahren zum Positiven gewandelt, wo ansonsten ausschließlich lieblose
bzw. völlig überflüssige Sampler auf den Markt geworfen
wurden, geht die Tendenz dahin ( mit Sicherheit auch aus finanziellen
und marktstrategischen Gründen), dass der Kundschaft "fast"
nur noch hochwertige Zusammenstellungen angeboten werden. Es gibt sicherlich
unterschiedliche Konzepte, um eine Compilation auf den Markt zu bringen
- das Label Cold Spring aus England, die mit ihren letzten Veröffentlichungen
endlich wieder zu alter Stärke zurück gefunden haben, bieten
ihren Interessenten einen besonderen Querschnitt ihrer jahrelangen Arbeit
auf einer Doppel CD an, wo ein großer Teil aller Künstler vertreten
ist, die in der Geschichte des Tonträgerverlages ihre Werke dort
veröffentlicht haben oder noch veröffentlichen werden.
Um allen vertretenen Protagonisten auf dieser Zusammenstellung
gerecht zu werden und um Euch einen vernünftigen Einblick in diese
Doppel CD zu geben, habe ich mich dazu durchgerungen, zu jedem Tondokument
ein paar Zeilen zu verfassen.
CD1:
1. Der Opener "Ein neuer Krieg" wird von Kreuzweg
Ost bestritten, mit meiner letzten Besprechung über das letzte Release
des österreichischen Projekts, habe ich den Herren wohl ein wenig
unrecht getan. Hier wird der Zuhörerin bzw. dem Zuhörer eine
martialische Collage geboten, welche mit Samples wie "Links, Rechts,
Links" aufwartet, welche Soldaten zum Marschieren auffordert, das
ganze wird noch von engelshaften Frauenchorälen begleitet - eine
interessante Arbeit, die bei Freunden dieser Musik großen Anklang
finden dürfte.
2. Andrew Liles ist neu im Sortiment von Cold Spring Records, er
produziert seit den 80'ern Musik und wird seine erste Veröffentlichung
im Laufe diesen Jahres auf den Markt bringen. Minimalistischer bzw. surrealistischer
Sound bestimmen das Lied "Sea Man Or Giordano Giosus The Unsuspecting
Landlord", welches Frau oder Mann als Geräuschcollage bezeichnen
kann. Nicht sehr spektakulär inszeniert - kein wirklicher Erkennungswert.
3. Das 1992 ins Leben gerufene Projekt gibt mit "Sacred Fury"
(Live) ein sehr folkloristisches Tondokument zum Besten, welches an Tänze
von afrikanischen Stämmen erinnert, eine zusätzliche Aufwertung
erfolgt durch orchestrale Hintergrundstrukturen. Ein sehr gewöhnungsbedürftiger
Track, der nach mehrmaligen Hören einen gewissen Charme entwickelt.
4. Die Künstler Masami Akita und Henrik Nordvargr Björk,
besser bekannt unter ihren jeweiligen Projektnamen Merzbow und Nordvargr
gehen mit der Gemeinschaftsarbeit "Partikel MN2" an Start und
können, wie mit ihren meisten Releases, auf ganzer Linie überzeugen.
Es werden brutale Noisesequenzen gekoppelt mit atmosphärischen Dark
Ambient Soundcapes geboten - eine perfekte Mischung, die ich nicht anders
erwartet hätte. Ein Highlight auf diesem Werk
5. Clear Stream Temple ist ein Sideprojekt von Abby Helasdottir,
der auch der Kopf und Lenker von Gydja ist. Eine sehr plakative Klangcollage
"Division" (City Of Mosques) mit eingestreuten Industrialrhythmen
, die sich gegen Herrn Bush und sein Handeln wendet, bekommt die Hörerschaft
um die Ohren geblasen. Das Thema wurde von anderen Projekten schon besser
aufgegriffen und umgesetzt.
6. Guter orchestraler Dark Ambient bzw. Neoklassik muß ja
nicht ausschließlich auf Cold Meat Industry in Schweden veröffentlicht
werden, obwohl Herr Karmanik ja fleißig dabei ist, ein Monopol in
diesem Bereich zu erschaffen. Schön, dass Cold Spring Records den
schwedischen Künstler Fredrik Klingwall zu sich gelotzt haben ? seine
Musik ist sehr ergreifend komponiert und kann sich ganz locker mit Größen
wie The Protagonist und Raison d?etre messen. Für Cold Meat Industry
Jünger dürfte das Release von Fredrik Klingwall, welches noch
in diesem Jahr erscheint, ein Pflichtkauf sein.
7. Hier ein Tondokument von einem verstorbenen Künstler,
John Watermann (1935 - 2002) hat seiner Nachwelt den Track "Whispering
Walls" (SI_Comm Remix) hinterlassen, der eine Soundcollage aus verschiedensten
Tönen und verzerrten Stimmen ist. Für Liebhaberinnen und Liebhabern
von Geräuschwelten bestimmt ein Leckerbissen, für den Rest ehr
uninteressant.
8. Das wunderschöne Neofolkstück "Herdfeuer"
(Reburned) ist eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit von den Projekten Bleiburg, Werkraum
und Von Thronstahl (Ich weiß zwar nicht, wie man mit einem Schwachkopf
wie Josef Maria Klumb zusammenarbeiten kann, aber alles muß und
will ich auch nicht verstehen, ansonsten würde ich wohl durchdrehen.).
Wer die Tracks der CD "Unsere Feuer brennen" von Werkraum kennt
und schätzt, wird schnell feststellen wie viel Werkraum und wie wenig
Bleiburg und Von Thronstahl "Herdfeuer" beinhaltet. Die markante
Stimme von Axel Frank, die Werkraum typischen Gitarrenläufe und die
verwendeten Hintergrundstimmen, lassen doch sehr schnell den Eindruck
entstehen, dass diese Arbeit doch sehr einseitig entstanden ist. Ein echtes
Hörerlebnis und das Highlight auf diesem Sampler - für Freaks
ein Muss.
9. Das einstige Allstarprojekt Zos Kia lässt für
die interessierte Noisekundschaft keine Wünsche offen, solche zum
Teil unstrukturierten Klänge in Worte zu fassen, fällt denke
ich jeder Rezensentin bzw. jedem Rezensenten schwer. Es gibt nur ein Musikinstrument,
was durchgängig zu erkennen ist und im Takt bleibt, das Cello. Der
Krach "Ten Miles High" (Alternative Mix) wurde von John Gossling
im Alleingang erstellt und produziert.
10. Aus Irkutz in der russischen Taiga kommt "Necropolis"
mit einem sehr interessanten Tondokument gekrochen. "Eudaimonia"
beginnt mit russischen Gesängen (Chorälen) und endet in einer
trostlosen und dunklen Klangwelt, die mich persönlich sehr überzeugt
hat. Der Macher "Aghast" wird noch in diesem Jahr, seine zuerst
veröffentlichte CDR "Necrosphere" als CD mit Bonustracks
neu auflegen und damit für Furore sorgen.
11. Den Abschluß der ersten CD bildet das Death Industrial
Projekt Deadwood, welches mit einer heftigen Mischung aus Noise und Industrial
aufwartet. "The Serpent Spiral" ist gespickt mit kleinen interessanten
Sprachsamples und bietet noch eine vernünftige hörbare Struktur.
CD2:
1. Der Newcomer Sistrenatus eröffnet mit dem Stück "IV"
(Remix) die zweite CD, der Kopf und Lenker Harlow verbindet unterschiedliche
Klangstrukturen um auf sich aufmerksam zu machen. Eine Symbiose aus rituellen
Trommelschlägen, Dark Ambient Soundcapes und Noisestrukturen lässt
die Hörerschaft aufhorchen. Eine sehr feine Arbeit.
2. SleepResearch_Facility mit seinem Macher Kev Doherty, hat
im Jahre 2003 sein erstes Release "Nostromo" über Cold
Spring auf den Markt gebracht, in diesem Jahr wird das neue Werk "Deep
Frieze" das Licht der Welt erblicken. Er bietet einen sehr schleichenden
Sound, der aus zwei Elementen besteht, das rauschen des Windes und eine
Struktur, die aus dem Ambient bzw. Rave Sektor stammen könnte. Eine
sehr hypnotisierende und atmosphärische Aufzeichnung mit dem Titel
"82S 45E", die zu den Höhepunkten gehört.
3. Ich dachte wir würden endlich von Releases der Band
Von Thronstahl verschont bleiben, wenn solche Bands sagen: "Wir hören
auf und machen nix mehr." dient es nur dem einen Zweck, der Ankurbelung
des Verkaufes der eigenen Produkte - leider erscheint in diesem Jahr ein
neues Machwerk, welches bestimmt wieder nur so vor Langeweile und geistigem
wie politischen Dreck strotzt. Die Folk Version "Adoration, To Europa"
ist in meinen Augen die gleiche Diarö, inhaltlich wie musikalisch,
den die Band seit 1995 von sich gibt.
4. Manchmal könnte der interessierte Beobachter meinen,
dass Herr Henrik Nordvargr Björkk nie schläft, sondern ur noch
Musik produziert. Goatvargr ist Kollobration mit Andy O' Sullivan, die
mit sehr rhythmischen Elementen und gleichzeitig sehr finsteren Parts
daherkommt. "Lycanthropic" hat den berühmt berüchtigten
Henrik Nordvargr Björkk Wiedererkennungswert und ist somit ein weiteres
Highlight dieser Compilation.
5. Die ungarischen Nationalisten Kriegsfall-U bieten wie schon
auf ihrem selbstbetitelten Debüt, sehr martialische bzw. bombastische
Klänge an, die diesmal noch mit Streicherpassagen erweitert wurden.
"Crisis And Catharsis" ist die konsequente Weiterentwicklung
der Tracks, die bisher von ihnen bekannt sind.
6. Einer der Macher des Okkult Dark Ambient Projektes Endura,
Christopher Walton, stellt auf dieser Zusammenstellung sein neues Musikprojekt
Tenhornedbeast mit dem Stück "Archangel" vor. Eine sehr
interessante Kombination aus Dark Ambient, Drone und Doom. Sehr dunkle
Klangstrukturen vermischen sich mit messerscharfen Riffs, wie sie im Drone
und Extrem - Doom verwendet werden. Das neue Release dürfte somit
zwei bzw. drei Gruppierungen ansprechen Dark Ambient- wie Drone- bzw.
Doom- Liebhaber.
7. A Challenge Of Honour gehören auch zu der Sorte Projekte,
denen ich beim besten Willen nichts mehr abgewinnen kann. Das Lied "At
Dawn We Meet Our Maker" ist ein so vor sich hin plätscherndes
Instrumental, welches ein wenig Farbe durch die Trompeten- und Schlagwerk-
Klänge bekommt. Für Fans ein Muss, für den Rest einfach
nur langweilig bzw. gesichtslos.
8. Die Band Of Pain hat für diesen Sampler den Track
"Swelled And Spent" zur Verfügung gestellt, der für
Freunde von Geräuschkulissen interessant sein dürfte. Die bessere
Betitelung für das Tondokument wäre "schleichende Monotonie"
gewesen. Das neue Album "Fallen" wird in diesem Jahr noch bei
dem englischen Label erscheinen.
9. Das Berliner Projekt Werkraum steuerte das Lied "La
Lutte Des Jeunes" zu dieser Veröffentlichung bei, wo wir sonst
die Stimme von Axel Frank gewohnt sind, hat diesmal André Körsch
das Stück eingesungen, der es auch getextet hat. Im Gegensatz zu
sonstigen Werkraum Produktionen, ist diese sehr rockig ausgefallen und
erinnert ein wenig an alte Wave Zeiten, wo noch "Protest Musik"
gemacht wurde. Ein toller Vorgeschmack auf das neue Album, welches uns
dieses Jahr noch ereilen soll. Die Spannung steigt ....
10. Schloss Tegal, ein Name der im Industrial Sektor für
Kult steht. Die Soundcollage "Coital Affirmation" ( Artifical
Coital Equipment Remix) wirkt sehr berauschend bzw. betörend. Eine
wahnsinnige Atmosphäre, die nicht viele Projekte so erschaffen können.
Bestimmt ein Höhepunkt, den sich niemand entgehen lassen sollte.
11. Die zweite CD beschließt das Projekt H.E.R.R, welches
bei mir auch null Kredit hat, aber bei vielen Freunden und Bekannten von
mir hoch im Kurs steht. "Stalingrad" ist für mich kein
musikalischer Überflieger, die Pluspunkte sind die feine Instrumentierung
und der perfekte Gesang. Für Fans bestimmt ein Highlight für
mich politischer Irrsinn.
Der Doppel CD Sampler kommt in schöner dicker Pappverpackung
und ist nur mit den notwendigsten Information versehen worden - schlicht
und ergreifend.
Das gute Stück bekommt Ihr kostenlos, wenn ihr drei Tonträger
bei Cold Spring direkt bestellt, oder für 13 englische Pfund. Leider
kann ich Euch nicht sagen, wie hoch der Preis für das gute Stück
im deutschen Versandhandel ist.
Fazit: Eine sehr schöne Label Zusammenstellung, wo der Kunde erfahren
kann, welche Künstler bei Cold Spring Records in der nächsten
Zeit, mit Veröffentlichungen aufwarten werden. Jede Liebhaberin bzw.
jeder Liebhaber von extremer bzw. extravaganter Kunst wird auf diesem
Releases für sich ein paar Schmankerl finden. |

Le nouveau sampler de chez Cold Spring fait
comme d'accoutumée un point sur le catalogue du label et aussi
des nouveautés à venir. Ainsi l'on retrouve les ténors
du label et quelques inconnus qui ne tarderont pas à sortir de
l'anonymat une fois leur passage à l'album effectué. Autant
le dire immédiatemment, si l'on appréciera grandement la
présence de certains noms avec des inédits, on regrettera
que d'autres se soient contentés d'un minimum affligeant, à
l'opposé du talent dont il savent par ailleurs faire preuve (notamment
l'inutile titre de A Challenge Of Honour, qui déçoit ici
après un 'Seven samurai' grandiose). On notera l'excellente version
live du 'Sacred fury' de Shinjuku Thief, le troublant Andrew Liles (et
son ambient minimaliste extra-terrestre)ou laa folk amrtiale et symphonique
de Bleiburg flanqué de Werkraum et Von Thronstahl. Werkraum qui
exulte avec un inédit folk et enlevé tandis que V.T. nous
servent une fois de plus leur folk totalitaire ridicule et très
mal produite. Heureusement H.E.R.R. s'en sortent largement mieux et avec
plus de talent sur 'Stalingrad', et du côté dark-ambient
rituelle les confirmés Sleep Research Facility ou Schloss Tegal
rivalisent de terreurs abyssales avec les nouveaux Necropolis, Sistrenatus
et Tenhornedbeast qui offrent ici les meilleurs titres de la compilation.

brytyjskiego jakze zasluzonego i cenionego labelu Cold Spring, który
raptem kilka tygodni temu ujrzal swiatlo dzienne. Tym razem na dwóch
plytach znalazly sie lacznie 22 zespoly, które byly lub sa mniej
lub bardziej zwiazane z wydawnictwem Justina Mitchella. Pomysl na pewno
znakomity, podobnie jak obsada owej skladanki, która momentami
zapiera dech w piersiach. Aby jednak niepotrzebnie nie przedluzac, pozwole
sobie w skrócie przyblizyc zawartosc muzyczna "Swarm".
Calosc otwiera austriacki KREUZWEG OST z kapitalnym militarnym kawalkiem
pelnym grzmiacych kotlów i sampli oraz podnioslego klimatu - jes´li
slyszelis´cie "Edelrost", to ten utwór jest utrzymany
w podobnym klimacie - miodzio!! Dalej mamy ANDREW LILES - dosyc srednie
jak dla mnie - dziwne znieksztalcone glosy na tle minimalistycznych dzwieków;
SHINJUKU THIEF - bardzo potezny, koncertowy kawalek z mocna³ dawka werbli,

Utwór "Adoration to Europa" zaaranz²owany jako "folk
version", akustycznie (tylko pod koniec z gitara elektryczna) i jak
dla mnie nieco sennie - bez swoistego "powera", który
posiada ten projekt, troche taka muzyka do snu; GOATVARGR - czyli kolaboracja
panów Andy O'Sullivana oraz Nordvargra - ostre i klujace, ale zarazem
potezne industrialne dzwieki; KRIEGSFALL-U - tu niestety w bardzo slabiutkim
jak dla mnie utworze, który prawie niczym nie przypomina kompozycji
chociazby z "Kriegsfall-U", troche poteznych militarnych blach
i kotlów i nic ponad to; TENHORNEDBEAST - mrocznie i industrialnie;
A CHALLENGE OF HONOUR - niestety takze slabiutko. Nie chcial bym byc zlym
prorokiem, ale wydaje mi sie ze powoli ten projekt zzera swój wlasny
ogon - obym sie mylil - tu niestety nudno i bez pomyslu; BAND OF PAIN
- kolejny mroczny, dark ambientowy utwór - calkiem niezle; WERKRAUM
- perkusja, niemiecki wokal, troche elektroniki a wszystko utrzymane w
konwencji militarno - neofolkowej; SCHLOSS TEGAL - mroczny dark ambient
w bardzo dobrym stylu; no i na koniec panie i panowie H.E.R.R. - REWELACJA!!!!
Swietny neoklasyczny i melodyjny utwór "Stalingrad" ze
znakomitym meskim spiewem czystym wokalem - nie mam wiecej pytan - najlepszy
kawalek na tej podwójnej skladance, którego trzeba posluchac!!
Reasumujac, jest na czym zawiesic ucho, rozrzut stylistyczny jest spory,
ale i tak wiekszosc projektów prezentuje wysoki poziom. Pozycja
jak najbardziej rekomendowana - warto to miec na swojej pólce i
zasluchiwac sie (szczególnie w H.E.R.R.:)). Polecam!

When Justin Mitchell first started selling
cassettes under the Cold Spring label back in 1988 I doubt that even he
would realise just how far his dreams for the label would have progressed.
Not only has he established one of the finest mail order outlets for music
fanatics the world over but the Cold Spring record label has flourished
to such an extent that every release it puts out is eagerly awaited for
and snapped up. It has without doubt become the leading record label within
the UK and is without equal. The reasons for this are simple. Firstly:
Justin won’t release any old recording that is offered to him just
for the sake of it…other labels PLEASE take note and secondly…and
probably most importantly…he has to like and believe in the music
of the acts that make it onto the Cold Spring roster. Of course by taking
this stance there are the odd blips on the radar that won’t appeal
to everyone…but what the hell there’s always another release
just around the corner that will fill that gap. For every Psychic TV there’s
a Folkstorm or Melek-Tha to enjoy. Cold Spring will soon be hitting release
number 65 with Goatvargr…the 5 gaps in the release numbers will
eventually see the light of day…so what better way to celebrate
all thing Cold Spring than with a double cd of exclusive tracks from acts
old and new.
‘Swarm’ follows in the illustrious footsteps of
the previous CD compilations ‘Shrine’, ‘Un-named (CSR5CD)’,
‘Seedmouth’ and ‘Chamber’ and the first vinyl
Cold Spring release ‘And the wolf shall lick the jewels from your
belly’. Where ‘Chamber’ was a ‘try before you
buy’ compilation of Cold Spring releases ‘Swarm’ is
a celebration covering all aspects of the Cold Spring manifesto regarding
music.
Comprising 22 tracks the illustrious role call of artists
reads: Kreuzweg Ost, Andrew Liles, Shinjuku Thief, Merzbow / Nordvargr,
Clear Stream Temple, Fredrik Klingwall, John Watermann, Bleiburg feat
Werkraum and Von Thronstahl, Zos Kia, Necropolis, Deadwood, Sistrenatus,

The majority of acts presented here have a back catalogue of releases
second to none representing every musical genre from neo folk / classical,
dark ambient, Death Industrial and Power electronics and each deserving
the highest of accolades for their musical prowess. Which makes picking
out the highlights from this release an impossible task. One which I’m
not even going to attempt. Every track in its own right is musical manna
from the Gods. My musical taste is all encompassing. I can just as easily
be hammered into oblivion by extreme noise terror and yet still derive
ultimate great pleasure from a decent neo-folk act singing in German.
Quality not quantity is my byword. The quality within these 22 tracks
beggars belief. You may have your doubts about certain acts or music but
‘Swarm’ serves to educate and alleviate those fears. If it
turns just one person onto an act they had previously discounted out of
hand then it has served its purpose admirably. For the rest of us already
committed to the Cold Spring cause it primes us for those future releases
with eyes locked firmly onto the calendar in fervent anticipation of future
delights.
‘Swarm’ is everything that a magnificent compilation
should strive towards. In fact this is the only compilation you’ll
need to buy this year as I doubt it can be bettered. If you happen upon
Justin in some dusty tavern down Northampton way shake his hand and buy
him a pint. He deserves it for his services in bringing the best musical
acts out to a wider audience through the Cold Spring record label. May
his tastes never change.
