  L’iconografia sonora di Schloss Tegal è strettamente legata al suo background estetico, e questo è un assunto che la sua carriera ha saputo dimostrare ampiamente nella nicchia di riferimento del suono ambientale più drammatico e sottilmente oscuro. Se immaginiamo il luogo evocato dal nome – centro di una geografia che ha coniugato ritualità indoeuropee, riscoperte templari e successive derive psicoanalitiche – riusciamo efficacemente a circoscrivere l’orizzonte stilistico di Richard Schneider, titolare unico del progetto: un suono ambientale digitalmente costruito su rigide direttive sovraccariche di drones e distorsioni vicino alle intuizioni del Megaptera più dilatato.

  Diciamolo: dopo la relativa esplosione della scuola svedese magistralmente creata ed abusata dalla Cold Meat Industry, la vena dark ambient è andata inevitabilmente inaridendosi, sfornando vagonate di progetti ed album spesso buoni soltanto per intasare gli scaffali dei completisti più accaniti (quelli, per intenderci, che professano fede incondizionata nella definizione e nel nome piuttosto che nella qualità del prodotto). Schloss Tegal riesce a mantenere una ispirazione sempre interessante, e per chi non fosse particolarmente addentro alla sua discografia questa raccolta potrebbe essere estremamente utile. “Neoterrik Research” raduna infatti alcune composizioni di difficile reperibilità e presenta il curriculum di Schloss Tegal in undici tracce ben selezionate.

  Risultano particolarmente degne di nota l’apocalittica “Last Glint of Consciousness”, precedentemente pubblicata all’interno della “Chamber Compilation” edita dalla Cold Spring e realizzata su un’unica, sfibrante torsione del suono; l’ossessiva “Collapse of the Wave Function” e la più strutturata “Technocore”, con la sua litania minimale scandita da un uso misurato del sampling. Completa la già esaustiva raccolta l’ipnotica “Felgeschrei” in cui si intrecciano le teorie sonore del nostro con quelle di Folkstorm, e già edita proprio sul remix album di Nordvargr.

  In definitiva, una piacevolissima oasi nera come la pece nel deserto scuro della dark ambient contemporanea.

  An appreciated move by Cold Spring, to bring out on CD the early works of this celebrated dark ambient act, as well as compilation tracks and other material that had never surfaced before. Spanning through noise drones, mechanical loops, organised and chaotic chaos, apocalyptic soundscapes, hypnotic stretching of sounds, rumbling waves and even "proper" droning ambient, the album goes a long way in illustrating the varied forms of obscure expression this project has taken upon through the years. None of them is for the light earthed and the world of Schloss Tegal is definitely a menacing, unforgiving one. So dive in, treat yourself to some of the classiest sonic punishment you could hope for.

  Right from the start, this compilation of rare Schloss Tegal soundscapes is nothing but harsh and cold. The manipulation of electronics and natural environments sends unnerving shivers across your body and through the very air itself. Sub sonic bass rumbles build and morph and the occasional disconcerting voice whispers bleak and haunting mantras. As with similar artists, (Gruntsplatter, Habeeb and Marspiter) this is best listened to in total darkness with headphones for that all engrossing claustraphobic vibe. This is also a pretty hard slog to listen too in one sitting. The unrelenting desolate atmosphere Schloss Tegal evokes can be a might depressing and overwhelming, but for this kind of noise, that's a compliment. So, if the darkness is your friend then this soundtrack will bring it even closer, open the void and tempt you in.

  SubtitledThe Hidden History, Cold Spring have here gathered a veritable feast of rare, deleted, remixed and unreleased material from the enigmatic partnership that is Richard Schneider and MW Burch that ordinarily would cost the ST aficionado a hefty sum to purchase separately, along with a fascinating essary on the history - and indeed mystery - of the castle from which the band namme derives.

 Tracks such as 'Felgeschrei' and 'Last Glint Of Consciousness' are deft at showing the 'noise' side; heavy blasts of dissonant disquiet that are almost addictively hallucinogenic to the point that the threat posed in speaker damage is completely ignored. That, however, is not to say that the pieces that follow a more mellow road are any less disconcerting. 'The Demon That Feeds On The Chaos Of Man' is a darkly brooding menace whose dense claustrophobia si made all the more harrowing by what it hides rather than what it displays. The 'Anti-Life Equation' trilogy is perhaps the standout of the album. Apring a soundtrack into an unchartered territory in another world, this truly shows the quality and depth of thought in the use of sonic architecture that lesser mortals are unable to replicate. That said, the bleak intensity of the hitherto unreleased recording of 'Black Static Transmission' for Dutch radio does run a very close second. 'The Hidden Variable' showcases Tegal's ability to weave an eclectic tapestry from found sounds that appears both serene and madcap in equal parts while 'Invitation To An Outrage' completes the journey through a particulary desolate vision of dark ambience.

 Having become one of the most name-dropped artists of the dark ambient world, 'Neoterrik' also offers, aside from the 'snaggered it at last' side, an excellent overview of the band's career that stretches across time and also shows off several different facets of Schloss Tegal for both the experienced and novice alike.

  Neoterrik Research is a collection of odds n' ends compilation, out of print and remixed tracks by one of the masters of dark noise dynamics, Schloss Tegal. Not one's to simply grind out generic, artificial odes meant to frighten or unnerve, Schloss Tegal delve deeper into the psychosis of dread, intently exploring subversive subjects with an honesty and integrity rarely exhibited in music nowadays. They have a knack for sonically crawling under the skin and meticulously massaging the synaptic transitways, sparking a true sense of unease that is palpable. They make me uncomfortable - in a good way. Immediately we are subjected to this sense of unease as the opening track, "Last Glint Of Consciousness" amidst a pulsing, surging rainfall, portends the true terror that death may bring. Hollow droning sounds and deep, musical nuances littered with scraping tones and scraps of brittle, broken noises fill out the background, adding to the all-around discomfort."The Demon That Feeds On The Chaos Of Man" is a chattering, insect bred horror that increases in volume exponentially 'raising hackles on one's neck' before the demon of the title caresses a metallic wire to the brink of snapping it (and all hope in the process). "Unsub (Insect Mind)" is a gurgling blast of noise whose internal density is constructed from shards of wide-eyed trepidation. "The Hidden Variable" trudges along a similar path, but with an even more intimidating presence. "Invitation To An Outrage (Reptilian Mind)" might be even more menacing, adding strange voices to the mix. There's too much great sound manipulation here for me to get into it all, suffice to say, Neoterrik Research is an excellent representation of the work of Schloss Tegal - but I'd recommend checking out all of their work - it's that amazing!

  All deleted 7" singles, compilation tracks, unreleased pieces and a few live tracks are gathered on the new Schloss Tegal album entitled Neoterrik research. Schloss Tegal has built quite a reputation in the dark, industrial scene, due to releases such as for instance Black static transmission, The soul extinguished, Live at the arsenal of the arts, The Grand Guignol, Oranur III The Third Report and Human resource exploitation. Again Schloss Tegal impresses with slow-moving dark ambient, remastered by Richard Schneider at Synaesthetics Studios in Prague. But Neoterrik research offers more, for instance the harsh, mechanical mix by labelmates Folkstorm. Due to this collection of excellent dark, long drawn-out apocalyptic soundscapes, hypnotic experimental noise, ritual drones and organic moments, Mark Burch and Richard Schneider prove that their material has been of a constant high level during the years. An album without a weak moment. But Schloss Tegal fans would have known that in advance.

  'The Hidden History Of Schloss Tegal' è il chiaro sottotitolo che ci fa da benvenuto per conoscere in via definitiva e dettagliata le produzioni più remote e particolari di questo progetto: undici cupi ritagli di dissonanze elettroniche precedentemente mai pubblicati o editi in varie compilation sparse per il globo e in vinili ora quasi irreperibili. Più vicino alla sperimentazione che alle maniere spicciole dell'energia power electronics di targa industriale, il materiale di ST prende con le pinze anche la definizione di ambient music, ripresentando la stessa a nuova veste in un labirintico aggrovigliarsi di immobili pulsazioni, suoni invisibili e rumori silenziosi. Un magmatico procedere di atmosfere non facili ma di potente suggestione.

  Ritual Dark Ambient es lo que nos ofrece esta reedición de temas extraídos de 7", recopilatorios y rarezas, lo cual conduce a la inexistencia de un nexo conceptual entre todos ello que sin embargo no afecta a la homogeneidad del todo el conjunto.

  Las densas atmósferas creadas por Schloss Tegal sólo se ven alteradas por algún tema de corte industrial-noise muy lineal. Schloss Tegal no aporta ninguna innovación al género, pero no cabe duda que sus composiciones gozan de una calidad altísima que llevan directamente el grupo de los grandes, junto a Raison D'Etre o Atrium Carceri.

  Fondamentale e misconosciuto, questo progetto statunitense ha seminato nelle ultime due decadi molti di quei germi che hanno affettato negli anni Novanta il suono di alcuni dei più eminenti progetti della Cold Meat Industry, nonché i flirt a base di Dark/Cold Ambient di certi musicisti dell'area Black Metal quali Burzum, Mortiis, Abruptum. Atmosfere oscure, suoni neri come la pece ed un approccio minimalista che, ad oggi, può apparire sorpassato o semplicemente forzato, ed eppure aggiornato nel proprio contesto d'origine, si rinnova di significato e valenza concettuale. Questo "Neoterrik Research" è semplicemente - si fa per dire - una compilation di materiale raro, estratti da 7", sampler ed altro materiale sold out; non consente perciò una valutazione significativa dell'operato di Richard Schneider e M.W.Burch se non completata da una full immersion nelle opere maggiori. Ciò nonostante, tra le undici tracce dell'album vi sono dei momenti davvero validi ed alcune intuizioni che ancor oggi mantengono un vigore che in altri casi rimane spesso sfigurato dall'inattualità e persistenza di un approccio francamente sorpassato. Per una conoscenza meno superficiale del progetto Schloss Tegal vi rimando all'ascolto di "Black Static Transmission" e "The Grand Guignol", due tra i lavori più riusciti e citati tra le influenze di molti musicisti della scena Dark Ambient.
