Spiral Staircase is a series of short electronic vignettes

exclusive basic material for Architectural Commentary
5: Some Models for Resonant Behaviour and links the
cycle to earlier music pieces constructed with sounds
from computer labs. Loosely based on Luigi Nono’s
idea of ‘isole musicali’. "...encyclopaedic
variations of themes are generated and often highlighted
by silent breaks, like islands, between the individual
parts, all different in form and size, but topologically

a decade, this record is Shifts’ probable farewell.
Initiated by Frans
de Waard (Kapotte Muziek, Freiband, Goem etc and
label boss of Korm Plastics) for a ‘soft guitar’
record on Fourth Dimension label in 1995, the project
has evolved to include many releases, all distinguished
by their singular instrumentation (including two deviations
from the guitar - Sonates and Interlude uses the piano,
while One Piece for Cymbal has a single cymbal). 'Trees
/ Leaves' was made with a four-string Spanish guitar
de Waard bought for 1 Euro on Koninginnedag (Dutch

blackened drones, dreamy hums and harsh noise storms.
This definitely ranks among Bower's more brutal jams,
with much of the album sounding like a gang of massively
distorted electric guitars battling mutant vacuum cleaners
in a brutal, cathartic mass of crushing jet-engine roar.
