JOHN WATERMANN | Calcutta Gas Chamber (CSR52CD)

Available: September
The concept of aurally conveying the horror of a gas chamber was realised through field recordings in an abandoned electrical power station in Brisbane in 1992. The sounds are grating and harsh, a mixture of field recordings and electronic manipulations. One can rarely pinpoint a location or action but the images the sounds conjure up are of all sorts of nefarious activites related to death by machinery. The sleeve notes take you into the horror that is the Calcutta Gas Chamber. A beautifully composed and produced CD, completely remastered and re-packaged.

AAL - 'Disc 1 + Inherited And Partially Transmitted’ 2 x CDR (AFE Records) - £13 / £14 / £15
"Disc 1" and "Inherited and Partially Trasmitted" were recorded by aal during 2001 and released in few copies as private editions by the artist himself. Both albums were remastered and given a new artwork for this release. "Disc 1" can be seen as a Deep Space Soundtrack: warm, melancholic cosmic drones, like looking at a starlit nightsky from behind a window, in the coldest hours of winter and was partly inspired by Stanislaw Lem's masterwork "Solaris" Passionately staring inward, "Inherited and Partially Transmitted" can be seen as an Inner Space Soundtrack with darker drone textures over which unearthly sounds, sourced from guitar and flutes, dance, twirl and crackle. Limited to 150 copies in a professionally printed sleeve.

AIDAN BAKER - 'Oneiromancer’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Aidan Baker explores the deconstructive sonic possibilities of the electric guitar as a primary sound source, creating music that ranges from experimental to post-rock to contemporary classical. He performs in the experimental collective ARC & the ambient / doom metal project Nadja, and has also composed work for the The Penderecki String Quartet & The Uxbridge Chamber Choir. On "Oneiromancer" Baker uses electric / bass guitars, drum machines, tapeloops, vocals. Regular edition of 600 copies in a full colour digisleeve.

AMON - 'Foundation’ 2 x CD (AFE Records / Eibon Records) - £15 / £16 / £17
"Foundation" features most of the tracks originally contained on the first untitled Amon album (1996), the whole "Mer" limited edition CDR (2000), and a few unreleased/rare bonus tracks. All tracks were remastered specially for this release. "Wondering why AMON is widely considered a dark ambient legend? This double CD will show you why.... You'll find no deeper nor darker ambient anywhere else." Presented in a gatefold digisleeve with inner sleeves. A very desirable piece from this Italian legend.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Adventures In Sound / Nachtstücke’ 2 x CD (Die Stadt) - £15 / £16 / £17
First in a series of 18 CDs aiming to make available all early vinyl albums by Asmus Tietchens between 1980-1991 on CD. Each release feat. the original tracks (sometimes extended / original versions) + unreleased bonus tracks from the same recording period, original artwork + accompanying texts by Tietchens. This double CD features his very first album "Nachtstücke" from 1980 (incl. 4 bonus tracks) and a second CD with archive material recorded with his long time friend Okko Bekker between 1965-1969. These are the first works in Tietchens' long career as a sound artist and were never released before. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Biotop’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Second in the re-release series, including 2 unreleased bonus tracks. With the release of this album, a 3 year interlude began which was dominated by the use of Roland 'CompuRhythm' drum-machine and the Moog. Tietchens also added a conceptual self-limitation: no track should be more than four minutes long. Because of the total absence of bass lines the commercial potential of the pieces was virtually non-existent. The album was recorded on an 8-track Otari tape-machine. The Eventide digital harmonizer and the Ursa Major 'Space Station' reverb-machine also played a part. All of the pieces were recorded in 1980. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Formen Letzter Hausmusik’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Part six in the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums onto CD. "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" was originally released on United Dairies in 1984. The original album consisted of a mix of archive tracks from the late 1960s / early 1970s and new tracks specially recorded for the release. Many people see "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" as the first 'real' Tietchens album laying the basis of what was about to follow in his long recording career and therefore vote this album among the most important and best Tietchens works. The CD version includes three unreleased bonus tracks and comes with the usual poster booklet featuring the original cover art plus text by Tietchens about the album. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Geboren, Um Zu Dienen’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Eighth part of theTietchens re-release series. Described by Tietchens himself as his 'industrial' album, "Geboren, Um Zu Dienen" was originally released on the Spanish Esplendor Geometrico label in 1986. "Although I obviously wasn't one of the inventors of 'industrial music,' I clearly felt an affinity to it... My main concern was to dive deep into the canonical topics of fear, hysteria, claustrophobia, machine and threat." This CD version includes three unreleased bonus tracks from the same period (1980-1991). Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'In Die Nacht’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Fourth part in the re-release series of all early vinyl albums by Asmus Tietchens on CD. This is the third of the SKY albums from 1982 and includes three bonus tracks of unreleased material not included on the original LP. "I found myself trying to square the circle, wanting to have the rich detail of my short works at the same time as creating longer pieces. It is not really possible to create pieces of six minutes or more from ideas which are only adequate for tracks of three minutes, unless one is willing to risk musical redundancy or, worse, long-windedness. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Litia’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Fifth part in the ongoing re-release series of all early vinyl albums by Tietchens onto CD. This one from 1983 marks the end of his Sky 'phase' and was the last to feature his very own version of 'Synthesizer Pop Music' for some time (he'd only return to this music with the release of his Hematic Sunsets albums in the late 1990's). The CD also features the rare 'Rattenheu' 10" only release plus one unreleased archive track and comes in a transparent jewel-case with full colour poster booklet featuring a reproduction of the original cover art and extra photos. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Seuchengebiete’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
The seventh part in the re-release series of all early Tietchens albums between 1980-1991. "Seuchengebiete" is another early Tietchens classic, the first where he only used a single sound source as the basis of a complete album. Originally released on A-Mission in 1985, this new CD version includes one bonus track. Comes with a full colour fold-out booklet featuring the original cover artwork plus liner notes by Tietchens. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Spät-Europa’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14
Part Three in the ongoing re-release series of all early vinyl albums from 1980 - 1991. This was Tietchens second album for SKY Records, recorded in 1981, documenting his search for his own style of 'pop music'. "Even more consistently than on Biotop I kept all of the tracks on this album deliberately short. Originally, all of them were supposed to be exactly two minutes in length but, back then, without a computer, this was not really possible and the idea could not be carried ot precisely. Nonetheless, this strict concept gave the listener a total of twenty miniatures, four more than on Biotop" [Tietchens]. Ltd x 1000, with a poster booklet featuring the original cover artwork.

AUTECHRE & THE HAFLER TRIO - 'æo3 & 3hæ’ 2 x CD (Die Stadt) - £15 / £16 / £17
Two of the leading artists in their own field team up again for the much anticipated second instalment of their collaboration project. This is heavy going stuff spread across two CD’s, ranging from minimal concrete / ambient stretches to sharp, fast and awe inspiring digital spasms, inspired by the deformation of light, water and time. The music here will definitely appeal more to the Hafler Trio audience. Like part one this comes in special deluxe handmade cover with mysterious inserts and is finished with a gold obi stip. Third edition of 1000 copies.

BESTIA CENTAURI - 'The Antediluvian Earth’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10

Bestia Centauri is a solo electronic music project, begun in 1999. The aim of Bestia Centauri is to create sonic landscapes that convey a sense of the numinous, the horrific, and the extra-human. Its sounds have much in common with those of electroacoustic music, but the compositional structures generally display a much greater sense of flow. Unlike the Dark Ambient works to which it is sometimes compared, the music of Bestia Centauri is dynamic and often disorienting, like the strange angles of the architecture of R'lyeh. Limited to 150 copies in a professionally printed sleeve.

CELESTIIAL - 'Desolate North’ CD (Bindrune Recordings) - £12 / £13 / £14
Minnesota's own Celestiial present "Desolate North" - an 8 track, full-length release. This is the vibrant pulse of the woods... the building up and breaking down of life as is exists within the crippling and organic churn of the funeral doom genre. Over 45 minutes of inspired woodland doom and ambient folk will find your thoughts with a yearning for the rise and triumph of the woodlands... the worlds glorious return to the primordial. Dark and eerie stuff. Ltd x 1000 copies.

DAVID JACKMAN - 'Verhalte Dich Ruhig’ MCD (Die Stadt) - £9 / £10 / £11
Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. The title seems to translate to "hold you back calmly" and that sentiment certainly matches the music. Two untitled tracks spanning just over 25 minutes. Ltd x 700 copies.

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR - 'Selenoclast Wolves’ CD (God Is Myth) - £12 / £13 / £14
Smolken returns to the dark, avante-garde Neofolk side of Dead Raven Choir. The common feeling throughout "Selenoclast Wolves" is one of complete isolation. As a bonus this CD contains the complete re-issue of the "Lesbian Corpse Wolves" album which was limited to ONLY 30 copies, and features the beautiful voice of Emily Salvatierra. All completely re-mastered by Frédéric Arbour (Cyclic Law, Visions). "...Dark, folk-ish compositions rely heavily on picking accents and clashing notes that are both melodic and completely discordant all at once..." [Ascension]. Exclusively distributed throughout Europe by Cold Spring.

DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL - ‘Aural Illusions’ 12” (Die Stadt) - £10 / £12 / £14
Based around digital lock grooves, this work by Digital Terrestrial is also observed by composers like Steve Reich (Minimalis / Systems music) and will eventually be performed by a String Quartet. It could be thought of more as a piece of conceptual art rather than just a piece of music. This vinyl only release could well be described as 'a lock groove record without the lock grooves... Playing time over 38 minutes. Limited edition of 500 copies on heavy clear vinyl in a clear plastic cover.

DRONÆMENT - 'Ezoterick Muzick’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10
Dronæment is active since 1997 and is the main musical project of Marcus Obst. "Ezoterick Muzick" is the third Dronæment album released by AFE and was inspired by repeated listenings of indian traditional music. Dronæment approach the genre constructing a tonal framework, fused with occasional field recordings, at times sounding like an early Zoviet France, or more recent material by Z'EV. Meditative and relaxing ambient music. Limited to 150 copies in a professionally printed sleeve.

FOVEA HEX - ‘Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent Part One: Bloom’ MCD (Die Stadt / Janet Records) -
£10 / £11 / £12
First in the 'Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent' series of three CD EP's by this new project founded by Irish singer Clodagh Simonds. Ethereal vocals with a haunting quality over some very beautiful string laden electronica. Such a beautiful fragile sound packed with emotion. 3 tracks that really are quite sad in the real sense of the word. Contributors to "Bloom" include such illustrious names as: Brian Eno, Roger Eno, Laura Sheeran, Lydia Sasse, Cora Venus Lunny, Toby Arnott, Carter Burwell and Andrew McKenzie (The Hafler Trio). The CD comes in a beautiful embossed cover in an edition of 2000 copies. Absolutely essential!

FOVEA HEX - ‘Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent Part Two: Huge’ MCD (Die Stadt / Janet Records) -
£10 / £11 / £12

Second in the 'Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent' series of three CD EP's by this project founded by Irish singer Clodagh Simonds. Ethereal vocals with a haunting quality over some very beautiful string laden electronica. Players on Huge: Clodagh Simonds, Colin Potter, Roger Doyle, Cora Venus Lunny, Brian Eno, Laura Sheeran, Percy Jones, Carter Burwell, Lydia Sasse, Hugh O'Neill, Sarah McQuaid and Andrew McKenzie (The Hafler Trio). The CD comes in a full colour embossed cover. Edition of 2000 copies. Again, absolutely essential!

ILLUSION OF SAFETY - ‘In Opposition To Our Acceleration’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

"In Opposition To Our Acceleration" begins innocuously enough with tinkled chords from a pianist fractured into quaint glitches. Such aural pleasantries have been deliberately staged as a counterpoint to something far more sinister. Sure enough, a disturbed ambience settles upon the rest of the album as the playful piano tones are replaced by razor sharp piercings coupled with psychoactively eerie drones and scribbles from a microphone across a metal plate. Illusion of Safety actualize their name through a theatrical exploration of "the language of error." Sumptuously packaged in an outsized gatefold pack with several artcards. Ltd x 1000.

ILLUSION OF SAFETY - ‘More Violence And Geography’ CD (Die Stadt) - £10 / £11 / £12

This is re-release of the very first Illusion Of Safety LP from 1988 onto CD, including an unreleased 11 minute live bonus track from early 90's. The 11 tracks here display a much rawer and more 'industrial' feel, with the use of harsh found sounds and voices, compared to more recent works. The cover features new artwork by Dan Burke and the CD comes in a professionally-printed gatefold card in a plastic sleeve. Ltd x 700 copies.

JOHN DUNCAN - 'Da Sich Die Machtgier...’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

Asmus Tietchens sent processed recordings of himself reading excerpts from two texts by E. M. Cioran. Duncan worked on and manipulated them, creating three pieces. There is little of Tietchens remaining in these abstract creations. Speed-altered voice tracks are stacked, swirling electronic sounds in the background providing proof of deeper processing. "Freih zein hoem macht..." ranks among Duncan's harshest pieces to date, while "Aber..." is more "typical" Duncan: a drone derived from the sound source but from which the sound source has been obliterated, and yet makes its ghostly presence palpable. Presented in a nice digipak with tasteful spot varnish and insert. Ltd x 1000.

KNUT - 'Terraformer’ CD (Conspiracy Records / Hydrahead) - £12 / £13 / £14
Hybridizing metal, guitar noise, and hardcore while searching for new musical frontiers in their early career, Knut embodied much of what many bands today are still seeking to achieve and did so in splendid form. 10 years on they're still prophesying a future for heavy music. One for fans of the generic Hydra Head sound: atmospheric drones, overwhelming bursts of noise, and complex rhythms battling against each other (think Jesu, Isis etc).

KONTAKT DER JÜNGLINGE (Thomas Köner + Asmus Tietchens) - 'Frühruin’ 4 x CD + 3" CD
Boxset (Die Stadt) - £50 / £55 / £60

The box includes 4 discs of live recordings by KdJ: "0" (Bremen, Lagerhaus 1999), "1" (Rostock, MS Stubnitz 2001), "-1" (Bremen, Lagerhaus 2001), "n" (Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum 2002). Plus a mounted and exclusive 3" CD entitled "Frühruin", presenting the first studio works by KdJ. Slow, moving atmospheric compositions, crackles, drones, vast, dark spaces and erratic noises. Limited edition of 500 copies in a stunning boxset. Very nice, collectable set! Hurry for this one!

LETUM - 'Broken’ CD (Cold Meat Industry) - £12 / £13 / £14
The second musical offering from Mattias Henrikssons one-man project Letum was borne out of personal frustration and its creative force. From the calm and soft dark ambient debut CD "The Entrance to Salvation", we found the new CD to be far from salvation! - the choral sounds are still there and the deep and darker sounds, mixed together with more harsh industrial ambiental elements. The whole album has a beautiful atmosphere of a down dirty depressive feeling of hopelessness and despair. Some sounds are utterly beautiful, some plain mad, some martial powerful and some gritty industrial, all together another very enjoyable travel into the Broken wasteland, a personal hell, guided by Letum.

MIRROR - 'Still Valley’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

Re-release of the LP version of "Still Valley", including one extra track. One of Mirror's finest works recorded by Andrew Chalk (Ora, Ferial Confine), Christoph Heemann (HNAS) and Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Gastr Del Sol, Illusion Of Safety) between May 2002 - January 2005. This album is a beautiful study of slowly shifting drones, like a film shot in slow motion. One noticeable difference between this and other quiet Mirror affairs is the presence of oscillating pulses. These analog tones occasionaly accentuate the constant guitar drones, adding a shimmery quality, rather than becoming a competing element. Edition of 1000 copies in dye-cut cover.

MONNO - 'Error’ CD (Conspiracy Records) - £12 / £13 / £14
Dense, abstract, challenging, and confrontational. Monno stands out from the legacy of doomsayers that includes Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Whitehouse, and more recently Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt. Monno are impressively abrasive in sending atomic blasts of fury, but beneath the shock value of these overwhelming sonic miasmas are throat-grappling melodies evoking a dense, brutal trance. The CD is presented in a very nice silver outsized boolet.

MONOS - 'Generators’ 2 x CD (Die Stadt) - £15 / £16 / £17

Long announced drone release by Colin Potter (Ora, Nurse With Wound) & Darren Tate (Ora). This double album consists of two different works recorded between 2002-2003 at IC studio. Disc one features 3 tracks that are loosely based on processed field recordings in the 'classic' Monos style, exploring internal spaces. Disc two has one long track of arganic & electronic tones which combine to give a dense cloud of flowing sound. Full colour digisleeve. Artwork by Darren Tate & Helen Potter. Design by Jonathan Coleclough. First edition of 600 copies in a double gatefold pack.

MONOS - 'Nightfall Sunshine’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

Monos is Darren Tate (ORA) and Colin Potter (who besides also being a member of ORA collaborated with Steven Stapleton on several Nurse With Wound albums). Five tracks based on field recordings by Darren Tate which were then electronically processed in the studio by Colin Potter. Dark and sometimes dense soundscapes, all displaying a strange spelling beauty. Both artists regard this as their finest work so far. Limited edition of 700 copies in a nice, full colour digipak.

MZ.412 - 'Infernal Affairs’ CD (Cold Meat Industry) - £12 / £13 / £14
7 years after "Domine Rex Inferum", MZ.412 present "Infernal Affairs" - pure bombastic evil manifested in explicit sounds. As always, based on the dark arts, the sound is classic MZ.412 taken to the extreme and beyond. From abysmal ambient parts, heavy pounding industrial dance hits, to grand orchestral maneuvers, the Swedish Legion returns to dominate the scene once again, with an album that clearly defines what true black industrial music is all about. The CD comes in an extremely dark, stylishly embossed 6-panel digipak. Needless to say, an essential release.

ORCHESTRA TERRESTRIAL - 'Here And Elsewhere’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

As an original member of the legendary Cabaret Voltaire, Richard H Kirk has been producing innovative electronic music for more than 25 years. Under the guise of Orchestra Terrestrial, and inspired by such classical artists as Wagner, Debussey and Mozart, Kirk creates dense soundtrack like atmospheres which range from orchestral sections to more rhythmic tracks, which are all typical Kirk. This 62 min. long CD comes in a 6 panel digisleeve with special printing including 6 color postcards. Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies.

ORDO ROSARIUS EQUILIBRIO - 'Apocalips’ CD (Cold Meat Industry) - £12 / £13 / £14
Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio continue their march amongst seeming polarities - of creation and destruction, of dark and light, of joy and sorrow, of sex and war - toward the Coniunctio Oppositorum, the conjunction of opposites. Their seventh full-length album, true to the ethos of The Order of Roses and Balance, is an opus of decadent beauty, of shining darkness, of fierce eroticism, of dreams, of blood, sperm and fire. ORE continue in their tradition of sound, the instruments ranging from drifting acoustic guitars, piercing percussions, lush pianos and strings to the fittingly decadent samples and above all the deep voice of Tomas Pettersson. Brilliant.

ORGANUM - ‘Die Hennen Zähne’ 3” CD (Die Stadt) - £7 / £8 / £9

A four track mini CD combining the never released two 10" vinyl 'Maus' and 'Die Hennen Zähne'. 'Die Hennen Zähne' opens with 'Die Kralle', actually a David Jackman track from his archive, recorded in the early 1980's. Next is the title track 'Die Hennen Zähne', a joyful noise not unlike some of the The New Blockaders / Organum material including the sound of broken glass and tibetan horns. 'Maus' is the centre piece of this mini album and typical 'old school' Organum. The album closes with the more quiet and haunting 'Kazi', a live improvisation featuring collaborator's Michael Prime and Emma O'Bong. Nice lttle 3" digipack. Ltd x 600 copies.

ORGANUM - ‘Vacant Lights / RaraAvis’ 2 x CD (Die Stadt) - £15 / £16 / £17

Re-release of 'Vacant Lights' (cassette 87 / LP 88), in combination with a second CD comprising five unreleased or hard to find tracks entitled 'Rara Avis'. David Jackman was supported on these recordings by some of the main collaborator's during this Organum phase: Dinah Jane Row, Jim O'Rourke, Eddie Prevost (AMM), Christoph Heemann (HNAS), Robert Hampson (Main) as players and Steven Stapleton (NWW) and Peter McGhee in the studio. Most of the recordings on these two CD's show the more contemplative side of the Organum sound, the main characteristic being Jackman's playing of various types of bamboo flutes some of which were actually made by Jackman. Ltd x 600 copies in 4 panel digisleeve.

ORGANUM / Z'EV- ‘Tocsin –6 Thru +2’ CD (Die Stadt) - £12 / £13 / £14

Following "Tinnitus Vu" (Touch, 2004), "Tocsin" is the first full length album by these two renowned sound artists. Whereas Z'EV simply reworked already existing work by Jackman for "Tinnitus Vu", this time the artists agreed to both meet in the studio for "Tocsin". They created and recorded sounds from a piano and a stainless steel piece built by Z'EV circa 1989, over the course of several hours, took the recordings home, and after a period of each one mixing these sounds by themselves came up with what can be heard on this CD. Two distinctively different works by both artists which form a multilayered and fascinating album. Design by Jonathan Coleclough. Edition of 600 copies in full colour 4 panel digisleeve.

RITUAL FRONT - 'Lightnings Over Crimson Hill’ CD (Der Angriff) - £12 / £13 / £14
The first full-length record of one of the most interesting Russian newcomers to the Dark Folk scene. This album is dedicated to Crimson Hill, or Vottovaara, a mountain in Karelia, considered a halidom by former the inhabitants of these Northern forests. With severe battles on peak during World War II, it gained the new name of Death Hill. “Lightning Over Crimson Hill” is a manifest of resistance against mediocrity and dullness, hypocrisy and hollowness. The complex musical structures incorporate acoustic guitars, passionate voice, strong but ascetic keyboards, beautiful piano melodies and martial drums, making the record something more than just a collection of songs. Comes in a full-colour fold-out digisleeve with a booklet, limited to 300 copies only. Russian import.

STEVE BRAND - 'Awakensong’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10
Steve Brand (Augur) creates atmospheres, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener. According to his own words, "emotional aspects of a recording always come first". Consisting of nine tracks, "Awakensong" was recorded and mixed by Steve Brand in early 2005, and is a highly enjoyable excursion into good meditative / ritual / tribal Ambient music. The album utilises a vast array of traditional musical instruments, found and hand-made objects, alongside sophisticated electronics. Limited to 100 copies in a professionally printed sleeve.

SUBINTERIOR - 'The Chrysalis Secret’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10
"The Chrysalis Secret" is Andrea Freschi's fourth work. The album clearly showcases his skills at creating good dark atmospheres and it's another step forward in his music career. It's impressive that, as usual, almost no synthesizers and samples were used during the creative process: the equipment used to create "The Chrysalis Secret" simply consists of a mini-disc recorder that was mainly used to capture found sounds and noises created by all manner of unusual "instruments". These recordings were massively processed and assembled using computer technology and softwares, and turned into the finished work. Limited to 100 copies in a professionally printed sleeve.

TELEPHERIQUE + MAURIZIO BIANCHI - 'Zehn Tage (Touka)’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10
"Zehn Tage (Touka)" or "Ten Days" is a very special work born from the great friendship of two well-known estabilshed artists. The album concept is focused on the uselessness of time calculation compared to the precision of time itself. The title refers and is dedicated to those forgotten 10 days of History that were arbitrariously severed off in October 1582 during the Pope Gregorius XIII's Western Calendar Reformation. "Zehn Tage (Touka)" could be described best as a good mixture of Ambient and Concrete music, and even delves into psychedelic-tinged rhytmical territories. Presented in a professionally printed sleeve.

The CD comes in an silver embossed digisleeve and includes a 16 pages booklet with extensive texts. Limited edition of 600 copies.

THE TELESCOPES - 'Night Terrors’ 7" (Trensmat Records) - £5 / £6 / £7
The Telescopes open proceedings for Irish label Trensmat with an E.P of free drone audio druidry. Side 1 contains the seven and a half minute AMM meets Suicide groove of DSM-1v axis 1: 307.46 - the DSM term for night terrors. Side 2 builds a brilliant and atmospheric subterranean world of drone-scuzz and white noise using household objects - true metal machine music. Imagine a strange meeting between Fuxa, Suicide and Vibracathedral Orchestra. Ltd x 400.

TOMAS KORBER / KAZUYA ISHIGAMI - 'Mistakes’ CD (Neus-318) - £12 / £13 / £14
Swiss improviser and composer Tomas Korber works with sounds created by Japanese laptop artist Kazuya Ishigami and vice versa. Utilizing Korber’s guitar sounds Ishigami crafts an intriguing electronic world over two pieces - austere electrics, frenzied digitalia, high pitches, bass drones, melodic waves of feedback and rhythmic pulses. Korber meanwhile begins his piece with a static piercing tone that dissipates suddenly into silence. A strategy he continues throughout the piece, building towards crescendos and the then dropping in a block of silence, only to startle with a single resonating tone.

TRUE COLOUR OF BLOOD - 'Absence’ CD (AFE Records / Eibon Records) - £12 / £13 / £14
Long before the likes of Sunn o))) etc were constructing ambient / drone music purely from guitars, Eric Kesner was using guitars (and nothing else...) to build dense and flowing streams of sound. Dark Ambient of the finest kind, where monstrously dark drones meet touching melodies; music that will project you into an unknown universe of reverberating sound layers. This is the very first AFE regular CD and is released in collaboration with Eibon Records.

TRUE COLOUR OF BLOOD - 'The Significance Of Secrecy’ CDR (AFE Records) - £8 / £9 / £10
Take your musical pre- (and mis-) conceptions and leave them at the door. Form, melody, rhythm, chords: these words represent nothing but rules, barriers and walls which only serve to limit the places where "music" can exist or reach towards. The music of True Colour Of Blood (Eric Kesner) can best be described as "Ambient" or “Dark Ambient”, but manages to break even the rules (if there are any?) of this genre by making his music with only guitars instead of the usual array of synths and samplers. Limited to 250 numbered copies in a professionally printed gatefold sleeve.

WÄLDCHENGARTEN - 'Distractions’ CD (Phisteria) - £12 / £13 / £14
Really low-end ambient, sporadic humming pulses and blasting noise. “The senses are hit by a typhoon of charged electricity which sends your mind into a cabinet of mirrors where darkness folds and unfolds. The sound image presents itself as an inseparable unity in which myriads of parallel sequences are constantly undergoing transformations. Transcend through ethereal radiation!” Mastered by renowned Norwegian artist Lasse Marhaug. Nice piece!

WILLIAM BASINSKI - ‘Variations: A Movement In Chrome Primitive’ 2 x CD (Die Stadt / Durtro)
- £15 / £16 / £17

Another excellent work from the archives of American composer William Basinski, who is also responsible for one of the most beautiful and moving series in the field of experimental music. "Variations: A Movement In Chrome Primitive" was created in 1981 using piano tape loops, which were played randomly against themselves creating feedback loops. By 'cloning' small cells of melody and then 'breeding' them randomly, new sounds were formed. These new sounds move in and out of the original cells, creating complex crystalline structures, moving in and out of one another in surprising variations. This 2CD is a joint release with David Tibet's (Current 93) own Durtro label and comes in a 4 panel digisleeve.

Z'EV / JOHN DUNCAN / AIDAN BAKER / FEAR FALLS BURNING - ‘Untitled’ 2 x 7" (Die Stadt)
- £10 / £12 / £14

This double 7" set contains four exclusive tracks for this project. Z'EV provides another intense mix of material which partly originates from a live recording from the 'Atonal Festival' in Berlin back in 1983. Side B features John Duncan with a strange static sound/noise piece, whereas both Aidan Baker on Side C and Fear Falls Burning (Vidna Obmana) on Side D give fine examples of their slowly building dronescapes. Ltd x 600 handnumbered copies on thick vinyl in a very smart textured fold out sleeve.

Z'EV / ZERFALL_GEBIETE (Thomas Köner / Ulrich Krieger) - ‘Untitled’ 2 x 7" (Die Stadt)
- £10 / £12 / £14

Four exclusive tracks, released in conjunction with a live performance at the 'Lagerhaus' Bremen, April 2004. Record On
