ALEISTER CROWLEY - 'The Order Of The Silver Star' CD (Landmark)

Vintage spoken word recordings of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). Made in the 1910's and carefully restored from the original cylinders, these recordings are the only surviving spoken words from Crowley.
Released on CD in 1999 by Almafame as "The Great Beast Speaks", then in 2001 by Transparency as "Wax Cylinder Recordings", these rare audio tracks reappeared in 2007 and 2008 on the Cleopatra label under the heading of "Black Magic Recordings". Scratchy and of course quite variable from an acoustic standpoint, these arcane artifacts only take a little over 20 minutes to experience. Crowley speaks, intones, chants, sings and adumbrates, delivering the Call of the First and Second Aethyr in both English and Enochian; he recites or improvises poetic verses that are at once intriguing and mysterious beyond immediate comprehension. There is a "Hymn to the American People on the Anniversary of Their Independence," together with "Excerpts from the Gnostic Mass" a ritualistic essay on a Pentagram, and "Vive la French Republic" which is loudly sung (apparently by someone other than Crowley) with plodding piano accompaniment. |

Recorded in 1958 at the Beat Hotel, rue Git le Coeur, Paris, on a UHER 4400 reel-to-reel recording machine, this record documents Brion Gysin's important experiments in cut-up and recording technique. "I made it to show Burroughs how, possibly, to use it. William did not yet have a tape recorder. Very soon after that, Burroughs was busy punching to death a series of cheap Japanese plastic tape recorders, to which he applied himself with such force that he could punch one of them to death inside a matter of weeks, days even." The new album by Bruce Gilbert, whose career stretches back to late 1960’s British avant-garde art & music scenes, and has since played an important and influential role with his involvement in various rock based formations, work for choreographic projects and art installations.
‘Oblivio Agitatum’ is Gilbert’s first album length release since ‘Ordier’ (realised 1996 and released in 2004), essentially making this his first album of the 21st century. A startling and mesmerizing work which recalls some of his mid 1980’s works such as ‘This Way’ and ‘Shivering Man’. An ever shifting set of agitated and obscure tones creating a sense of confusion while still being highly structured and concentrated.

"This Way", originally released in 1984 on Mute (STUMM 18), was Bruce Gilbert’s first solo album being realised in that brief period between Dome winding down operations and Wire reforming for first time.
A stunning study of controlled ambience and subtle minimalism. The bulk of the album is taken up by the mighty 'Do You Me? I Did' / 'Swamp' pieces which were commissioned for a piece of the same name by choreographer Michael Clark. A grey tonal poem of amazing bleak beauty building up to the ecstatic crescendo of the third movement. This 25th Anniversary reissue is remastered by Russell Haswell and contains a rework of Angela Conway's artwork by Dave Coppenhall.

This is the first CD documentation of an event which took place in the Chiesa di Santa Lucia in Bologna, Italy in 1977, shortly after Beate Nitsch's death. Until this time Nitsch's music had essentially been a wall of noise: musicians could play anything they liked, but as loud as possible. With the Requiem Nitsch, for the first time, started to work with longer tone clusters, especially for the wind instruments. The perfect acoustics of the church with its wonderful organ suggested a new and much richer direction in his music - to which he has since adhered. 2 CDs in a 6-panel digipak - reproducing the impossible-to-find 3LP gallery edition issued in Naples in 1977. With a 12 page folded insert with drawings and directions from the original LP boxed set. This edition also includes a 32 page (shocking, for those of a sensitive nature) full-colour photo documentation of the aktion, available for the first time. Utilizing a collage of disparate sound sources (samples galore: from third world ambience to classical diversions to radio noise... to noise itself, and more!), Janko Krul Albanskaj manipulated the sounds into brittle sonic texts of confusion and chaos... At about the 25-minute mark, classical music slips into focus, the turbulence held at bay. The remainder of the track balances noise and sporadic classical music, masterfully so" (Side-Line).

JOHN DUNCAN - 'The Nazca Transmissions' LP

On Christmas Eve, 2004, John Duncan received a mysterious email from an archaeologist working at the site of the Nazca Lines in Peru. He claimed to have discovered, and over time recorded, a variety of sounds actually generated by the enigmatic lines themselves. Familiar with Duncan's 'Infrasound-Tidal', composed from source recordings taken from tides, seismic activity and barometric data from the Australian coastline, he suggested to Duncan the composition of a piece with these sources. All of the sources were modified in the studio of John Duncan, some radically, to bring out an unsettling, haunting quality. In June 2005, the glorious 5-track piece was finished. John Duncan sent several messages to the archaeologist, none of them ever answered or returned. A hard disk crash effectively destroyed all of the email correspondence between them. What remains are the notes he sent that ostensibly describe the details of sites and times for the source recordings. Those notes have been reproduced on the insert included in this edition, also presenting John Duncan's liner notes. First edition of 380 copies, with embossed total-black cover, insert and full-colour inner sleeve with superb space images of the Nazca Lines.

Liddikoatight is a new Japanese band with Kouhei Matsunaga among others. Leif Elggren, from Sweden, has worked with sound and performance art since 1980 and has a long list of releases, books and live-performances under his belt. Keplers Odd are a unique drone project comprised of bass, guitar and noise, headed by Daniel Jansson of Deadwood. Italian project Oniric was founded by Carlo De Filippo and GianVigo (Gianpiero Timbro) in 2005. RUSSELL HASWELL - 'Wild Tracks' CD (Editions Mego)

Russell Haswell returns with a complete departure from his real-time computer generated improvisations. "Wild Tracks" is a collection of ‘deliberate recordings’ made with other multimedia / film projects in mind. These recordings do not contain any overdubs or compression, and document a wide variety of audio experiences: a blowhole in Jamaica, an ant colony, a wasp nest, a helicopter ride and waterfalls, as well as the sound of freshly fallen snow, flies being electrocuted, various military tactical airlift planes, air defence fighters and attack helicopters. The recordings on "Wild Tracks" were realised using a variety of techniques including using hydrophones to record falling snow, recording gamekeepers many fields away with a parabolic dish, as well as binaural, ‘near-field’ & ‘direct’.
Reputedly the first commercially released CD to be packaged in a KIDZBOX containing a full colour A2 poster with photographs and detailed recording notes.

For a long time a hard to find collectable record, this historical spoken word album by LSD prophet Timothy Leary has now finally been reissued. Leary’s raps and monologues, structured on an intersections of famous tunes of the time (the album was originally released in 1970 on Douglas) might sound outdated today and too linked to a specific weltanschauung that was the basis of Leary’s modern age philosophy. But this is probably the reason why "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" retains its interest in current times: it’s the original, uncut, uncensored vision of a sharp thinker who has been often easily scorned for his extreme takes on drug use. This work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by Gisèle Vienne and Dennis Cooper, entitled 'Kindertotenlieder'. This CD is NOT the soundtrack to said piece, but a separate project. However, elements may appear in the finished piece which is to be premiered in Brest, France, March 2007.
Pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern France during a thunderstorm. Others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight. |
