Through an element darkly…In the fall of 2005 Z’EV
began dipping deep into his archives and selecting recordings
to produce ‘sum things / a possible form for cold dark
matter’, a project reflecting his take on the ‘dark
ambience’ genre. Composed between December 2005 and
March 2006, these 6 pieces endeavour to transport the listener
deep into their long forgotten memories of the primal forces
at the dawn of creation. Each piece is based on a single sound
source. Absolutely no effects of any kind, not even equalization,
were applied to the source recordings. Instead Z’EV
relied solely on the stretching of the duration and pitch
of the samples and then edited and mixed the results down
into the heart of space. Hear then, the state of the art in
elemental musics. Not to forget the beautiful packaging by
artist Abby Helasdottir.

"Loss"
is not about the violent moment of loss, but its aftermath.
The crushing melancholia, the endless questions of “what
if?” and “why?”, as well as the concepts
of regret, missed opportunity, or a feeling or moment
in time that can never be recaptured. But even in the
midst of this gloomy scene, hope and light are born,
for loss is never total. Memory lingers, a residue of
evidence is left behind, and life goes on. “For
me, the album is an extension of the previous release,
Ghosts on Magnetic Tape, which relates to Electronic
Voice Phenomena, or the idea that the dead can still
communicate with the living world through recorded media.
In order to try to capture this feeling I wanted the
music to leave a spectral, ghostly impression, and to
have an organic decaying quality, like something trying
to break through from another world. To this end my
musical sources were mainly 78 rpm records, a vibraphone
and an upright piano. No synths or electronics were
used, only organic sources or instrumentation that has

2003 and 2004 Michael Northam and Seijiro Murayama met
a few times in Switzerland and France. A comprehensive
and extended document of these meetings has finally
made its way in the form of "Moriendo Renascor"
("In death, rebirth"). Seeded from recordings
taken in Lisbon, Portugal and Astoria, Oregon. Northam
offered heavily mixed sources. Selections were made
by trying to find segments of activated sonic ‘matter’
then finally to be passed through the ears and hands
of Murayama. A shared desire to find some shared experience

a densely planned acousmatic ‘composter’
