work with Marc Almond, Anni Hogan is one of the true geniuses
of the alternative scene. A composer, songwriter, arranger,

Through an element darkly… In the fall of 2005 Z’EV
began dipping deep into his archives and selecting recordings
to produce ‘sum things / a possible form for cold dark
matter’, a project reflecting his take on the ‘dark
ambience’ genre. Composed between December 2005 and
March 2006, these 6 pieces endeavour to transport the listener
deep into their long forgotten memories of the primal forces
at the dawn of creation. Each piece is based on a single sound
source. Absolutely no effects of any kind, not even equalization,
were applied to the source recordings. Instead Z’EV
relied solely on the stretching of the duration and pitch
of the samples and then edited and mixed the results down
into the heart of space. Hear then, the state of the art in
elemental musics. Not to forget the beautiful packaging by
artist Abby Helasdottir.

Some composers in this area can’t help but look for natural rhythms as they assemble their found materials, exploiting the natural warp and weft of the sounds like rings inside a tree trunk. "Dark Rivers is about a particular area in the North of England which stretches from the Solway Firth into the wastelands of the Northumbrian borders. This area is steeped in history and mystery. In particular, I have focused on the development of Britain's Cold War intercontinental ballistic missile weaponry in the late forties and fifties and which later became the center for Britain's space efforts... Many of the place names reflect the ancient cultural beliefs and superstitions - Black Fell, Black Beck, etc. Even today the place is wild and remote and old superstitions live on. The conflict of the ancient superstitions and the cold war paranoia is essentially what this is about. The older superstitions swallowing whole the newer age which came and went on the same dark, brooding hills. The lyrics are written from the chronological perspective of the killer, exploring key events and balancing truculent physical situations and aberrant psychological terrain, with terse delivery. Fierce, verging on hysterical vocals and well placed and researched audio samples stand above thick and violent synth beds.
