Dream-team hook-up between a trio of the most important free-noise theorists of the modern age: The New Blockaders and Thurston and Jim of Sonic Youth et al. Hard to work out who is doing exactly what here - though the presence of drummer Chris Corsano on the second track is pretty unmistakable - but the overall feel is of one of TNB's early 'Symphonie X' works, populated by thin strings of feedback, the crackle of electronic jack-to-jack friction and a subtle ring of bone. Beautifully eerie and a little more pro-drone than the bulk of TNB's work. The second track is just unbelievable, with a slow hiss of feedback torn apart by Corsano's triumphal, spirit / energy scattershots, marching a legion of ghosts all the way over the horizon. Highly recommended.

THISQUIETARMY - 'Aftermath' CD (Basses Frequences)
ThisQuietArmy's fourth album is partially inspired and in respect to aesthetics by the works of German visual artist Anselm Kiefer - the setting of "Aftermath" takes place in the post-apocalyptic countryside and revolves around fallen angels as unexploded ordnances. In parallel, the compositions were also inspired by the sounds of crackling tubes and failing resistors captured by amplifiers during the recording process. Drones and melodies were built around these hissing sounds to create moods of tension and transitions from the remnants of destruction. These static interferences thus remained as important compositional elements, as if the whole themed-universe stemmed from a faraway buzz, in which the dawn of a new era reveals itself. With "Aftermath", ThisQuietArmy manages to create the perfect light and heavy post-nuclear winter atmosphere, with a glimmer of hope appearing slowly like sun rays through massive dust clouds. TOSHIYA TSUNODA - 'Kapotte Muziek By Toshiya Tsunoda' CD (Korm Plastics)
This is in many ways a break with tradition. Normally Toshiya Tsunoda writes detailed descriptions of what he does per piece, but in this case it is just said he reworks an old cassette by Kapotte Muziek, called '4 Stukken'. Like the cassette there are four parts, corresponding with the original release and they are reworked in the best Tsunoda tradition, involving field recordings and strange and unusual on-site recordings. Rather than being documental or naturalistic, his pieces appear as unique music compositions concerned with the relation between space and cognition, rendering the vibration of objects audible, revealing the hidden beauty in each sonic detail. He captures the depth of the landscape, the vital breathing of things.
TOTAL - 'Exploded Star Sad Servant' CD (Self Abuse Records)
Hypnotic, hallucinatory guitar feedback from Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Hototogisu, Sunroof!, Pure). Originally the project was noise and industrial oriented and received occasional help from members of Ramleh and Ake. Towards the later 1980's the sound became more guitar oriented, leading to the creation of Skullflower. In the early 1990's, Matthew brought back the Total name to release his solo music aside from Skullflower. Although almost the releases by the second incarnation of Total are Matthew alone, towards the end he was joined by John Godbert, making Total a duo.

This full length sports four looong tracks of sky rupturing freeform guitar noise and chunky ear-shredding amp feedback that swirl together into thick, churning, blackened drones, dreamy hums and harsh noise storms. This definitely ranks among Bower's more brutal jams, with much of the album sounding like a gang of massively distorted electric guitars battling mutant vacuum cleaners in a brutal, cathartic mass of crushing jet-engine roar. Toy.Bizarre is the long running project of Cedric Peyronnet, who has specialized in location recordings often documenting a specific site and displaying an open ear to the beauty and potential of natural sound fields. TRAIT (A.K.A. ERIC LUNDE) - 'Inspirationals' CD (Industrial Recollections / Freak Animal)
Back in 1988 Arbeit Group released obscure industrial-noise release by a project called Trait. The A-side of the tape included several different arrangements for inspiration in battle. The B-side included several of those arrangements combined together for temporary unified action. 45 minutes of the most primitive analogue destruction, leaving no place for easy listening or relaxing moments. Coarse sounds of tape loops, manipulation and electronics make this into difficult industrial-noise. Trait is one of the most vicious works of Eric Lunde (Boy Dirt Car). The material has been transferred from the original master tapes by the artist himself, leaving everything 100% as is. The artwork is faithful to the original release, replicating the it as accurately as possible.

TRAJEDESALIVA & CHAOS CONDENSED - 'Ciertos Animales De Costumbres Discretas' CD (Caustic Records / La Defunción)
Quite a varied release - from warm washed out ambient dreaminess, to buzzing crumbling drones, to squiggly spaciness, to gorgeous glistening sun baked post rock, to reverb drenched guitar drift, to thick super distorted dirgedrone, and each of those allowed to shift and shimmer, change shape, and alter sound, transform from one into the other, and then back again, the drone is definitely the root of the music here, but even that is sometimes relegated to whirring way off in the distance, while harmonics sparkle and rhythms shuffle, but just as often, the drone wipes the slate clean, and all the other elements drift and whirl in the background while the drone rumbles and buzzes. Ltd x 500 copies in a 6-panel, die-cut digipak.
