R.Y.N. - 'Archaic Techniques Of Ecstacy' LP (Equation Records)
R.Y.N. are a UK-based duo probably best known for their Astral Death CD (Unrest Productions) and an excellent 7" on Drone Records. On this vinyl-only release R.Y.N. present 44 minutes of completely new recordings: a mix of archaic, unsettling, new and melancholy. This album took many months to record as a result of the careful attention paid to the record by the duo. This LP provides both classic R.Y.N. darkness plus even heavier oppressive, dark, soundscapes that can only be fully appreciated on vinyl over the two side-long tracks: Archaic Techniques Of Ecstacy and Provisional Sketch Of The Mind. If you don't know their work then this is definitely worth exploring. If you do know them then this is a must. RACCOO-OO-OON - 'Raccoo-oo-oon' CD (Release The Bats)
The swansong from Iowa City's Raccoo-oo-oon. Following up 2007's critically acclaimed "Behold Secret Kingdom", the final album takes everything up a notch and shows a band taking their last breath and laying down the last bricks in their fairly short history. Doomed, desperate prog-rock flailings decay into hollow purgatories of dimly pulsing ambience, only to re-erupt into percussion firestorms and experimental electricity. There are a few moments of "Behold Secret Kingdom"-style focus, but for the most part the mood remains raw and acidic; four souls on edge, backs to the crowd, channeling everything they have left inside. Nearly 80 minutes of music, mastered by Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans). Ltd x 1000 copies in a mini gatefold sleeve.

Two 15+ minute tracks of psychedelic noise-rock, was engineered and mixed by Justin Pizzoferrato (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) in 2008. RAKHIM - 'Crimson Umbrella' CD (20 Buck Spin)
"What if Z’EV had written the intro to Darkthrone’s “Blaze In The Northern Sky?". With that question in mind Finland’s Rakhim unearth "Crimson Umbrella"; a two-track fit of kraut-noise psychosis, schizophrenic percussive clatter and layers of effects and over-processed vocal chants and screams. The nightmarish deconstruction of the 2 lengthy tracks bare only trace elements of main members Krypt and Rudimentor’s day jobs in Circle and Pharaoh Overlord, with Rakhim indulging in sonic terror too far gone for the aforementioned bands. Although the album’s title makes reference to L.A.’s great Jesters Of Destiny, Rakhim would more aptly call to mind Wolf Eyes filtered through a lengthy Faust tape jam. Best experienced through headphones at appropriately ear-bleeding volume. Silver on black digifile.
RALF WEHOWSKY - 'Nameless Victims' 3" CD (Metamkine)
Musique concrète realized in 1994 / 95 in the studio of the composer. Part of the Collection Cinéma pour l’oreille, curated by Jérôme Noetinger. "Ralf Wehowsky was once the founding father of legendary German post musique concretists P16.D4 and has produced some fine solo CD's under the name RLW. This work, divided in 3 parts, uses the sound of a contra bass, which his intelligently treats with studio techniques. He shifts away from the analog stuff with P16.D4 and now works entirely digital. The result is a strong piece of modern musique concrete. Sometimes the sound is clean and dry and sometimes remote and wrapped" (Vital Weekly). Just over 18 minutes of music. RAMLEH - 'Switch Hitter / The Machines Of Infinite Joy' 10" (Black Rose Recordings / Broken Flag)
The first new material from the legendary Ramleh since 1998 and it doesn't disappoint. Powerful droning intensity, motorik rhythms and warped guitar riffs dominate these two songs with one containing Ramleh's distinctive distorted vocals weaving in and out of this inventive chemistry. "Switch Hitter" could almost be described as a full on dissonant rock track, but Ramleh's desire for experimentation and improvisation lifts it way above the general rock mindset. Ramleh have not lost any of their energy, excitement and ability to explore all possibilities. RAMONA PONZINI & Z'EV - 'Ankoku' CD (A Silent Place)
Ramona's personal touch is certainly her own particular Japanese chant, together with the use of traditional percussion, bells and cymbals from Japan. Z'EV, enchanted by all those elements, asked Ramona for this cooperation. "Ankoku" is a Japanese word which means "deep darkness". For this debut Ramona's voice and percussion was processed by My Cat Is An Alien in their mysterious studio, placed somewhere in Western Alps, adding some field recordings. Those recordings were then sent to Z'EV who has processed them with some of his typical percussion. Z'EV deconstructed the sweetness of Ramona's chants, enfolding the pieces with a darker atmosphere. 5 obscure tracks, structured on charming vocal melodies moving out from a "haunted house". RAPOON - 'Dark Rivers' CD (Lens Records)
'Dark Rivers is about a particular area in the North of England which stretches from the Solway Firth into the wastelands of the Northumbrian borders. This area is steeped in history and mystery. In particular, I have focused on the development of Britain's Cold War intercontinental ballistic missile weaponry in the late forties and fifties and which later became the center for Britain's space efforts... Many of the place names reflect the ancient cultural beliefs and superstitions - Black Fell, Black Beck, etc. Even today the place is wild and remote and old superstitions live on. The conflict of the ancient superstitions and the cold war paranoia is essentially what this is about. The older superstitions swallowing whole the newer age which came and went on the same dark, brooding hills. I was lucky enough to be born and grow up here and the darkness of the place is embedded deeply inside me." Digipak.

Re-issue of one of the most influential ambient albums of the early 90s, Rapoon's very first album, "Dream Circle" (Death of Vinyl). With its postmodern tribalism, its incessant chanting and dampened percussion and air of dense, subcontinental humidity, "Dream Circle" not only helped establish Robin Storey´s post-Zoviet France solo reputation, but inspired an entire generation of electronic artists fascinated by ritualistic and hypnotic repetition. RAPOON - 'From Shadows Sleep' CD (Essence Music)
A unique masterwork of mysterious dark and droney sounds! "From Shadows Sleep" sees Rapoon (aka Robin Storey, ex-Zoviet France) visiting ancient temples, moving between shadowy labyrinths of meticulous drones, echoed tones and distant rumblings, building a hypnotic sonic ritual that brings traces from a distant past in form of atmospheric, spiritual mantras of a possessive power. Ominous and bleak, yet wondrous, trance-inducing soundscapes swirl around majestic droning tape loops, patterns, ethnic samples and other secret devices masterfully arranged to mesmerize the listener. There’s no light in here - you will be guided by Rapoon’s brooding and extremely detailed sonic imagery. Ltd x 800 copies in a letterpress embossed package with 11 cards printed on quality recycled paper stock showcasing paintings by Robin Storey!
Rapoon is Robin Storey (Zoviet France). This album is dedicated to the research of mass media’s manipulation of people’s minds. "These recordings include the voice of David Icke. They reflect on the role of the media in shaping and informing opinions (the war in Iraq for example showed the shameless use of the media by a government intent on war whatever the real facts were) and in furthering prejudices and persecution of those who have differing views and dare to express them... RAPOON - 'Melancholic Songs Of The Desert' CD (Soleilmoon)
"These songs were composed during the last days of the Bush / Blair era and reflect the feeling of isolation and disconnection from any part of the political process and any sense of identification with the prevailing air of hostility and intolerance generated by this pair of religious xenophobes. The unjustified war in Iraq and the subsequent lies and propaganda engendered a feeling of revulsion and powerlessness. Once again it was “unpatriotic” to criticize or protest against the government’s actions, and there was a rise in nationalism and extrem- ist views. These songs are a retreat into the one place that no government has yet found a way into, the free and open spaces of the mind. They are spontaneous and mediative reflections looking for an inner peace in a world made ugly by hatred and war. They symbolize a kind of “walkabout” and a reconnection with a lost sense of belonging spiritually, intellectually and physically with the world we inhabit. In a broader sense they also re-affirm long held sympathies with the thoughts of writers and philosophers such as Camus, Sartre and Burroughs, and the profound wisdom of eastern philosophies such as Taoism and Zen. The music here looks for a sense of inner being that one can only find in quiet isolation" (Robin Storey). Presented in a hand made, screen printed (metallic) card sleeve and limited to 500 copies. RAPOON - 'Obscure Objects Of Desire' CD (Vivo Records)
Beautiful album from this dark / ethno-ambient / drone project of Robin Storey (Zoviet France). This album is about yearning. That aching emptiness that still exists when all rational processes have been exhausted. The unobtainable, all consuming and immaterial. The irrelevant and the irrational. The dark torments and the light hearted banter. The victories and the defeats. The achievements and the failures. The loves and the losses. When all are accounted for there remains only the obscure objects of desire. Packed in a hardback 6-panel digisleeve.
This Rapoon work has an accent on more dark, hard and anxious sound constructions than most of its recent albums, it is full of tension and scepticism, but with no lack of inner hope though. Like "Melancholic Songs Of The Desert", it deals with isolationism and the myth of democracy. These songs are a retreat into the one place that no government has yet found a way into, the free and open spaces of the mind. They are spontaneous and meditative reflections looking for an inner peace in a world made ugly by hatred and war. RAPOON - 'Wasteland Raga' CD (Aquarellist)
Brand new release from ethno-ambient act Rapoon. "While I was recently traveling through Eastern Europe recently, I passed through an area of industrial decline that reminded me strongly of the devastation of the Industrial heartlands of the UK during the early Thatcher years. The broken windows and twisted metal of the abandoned warehouses, the derelict pit-heads and the ruined factories all brought back memories of that grim time when the divide between rich and poor was never so obvious. Yet amongst the derelict factories and the red-brick estates of the North of England new music and art sprang forth as if driven by the desolate conditions. RASALHAGUE - 'Rage Inside The Window' CD (Malignant Records)
"Rage Inside The Window" is the astounding debut album from Indiana based dark ambient artist Rasalhague, offering some of the most haunting, dread filled, and yet dynamic atmospheres we've come across in some time. Inspired by the true events of a young girl neglectfully imprisoned in filth and squalor by her thoughtless and uncaring mother. "Rage Inside the Window" takes the listener into the mind of a savagely depraved soul. Don't expect ambient of the spaced out, blissful, and softly textured variety. This is dirty and impenetrably dark, with an intertwining mass of demonic squalls, intense probing, highly ominous tonal drones, distant monolithic pulsations, and bleak isolationism. 6 lengthy tracks of pure psychological horror, progressively getting darker, brooding, and more menacing. Finally, with the final track, some semblance of solace is achieved. Akin to Atrium Carceri or Raison d'Etre. 6 panel DVD Digipak.
"Vorweltschweigen" is completely based on the lyrics and sounds of Sturmpercht, the legendary creators of Alpine Folk music. Rauhnacht is pure Alpine Black Metal, based on the atmosphere of early Norwegian Black Metal, but dealing with Alpine and Celtic mythology, philosophy and tradition. ABM contains a large variety of (ancient) traditional acoustic instruments from Alpine/Celtic areas, such as the Alphorn, the Teufelsgeige, hunter's trumpets and other obscure Alpine instruments, as well as organic/natural field-recordings from black forests, craggy mountains and dark caves. Rauhnacht is the name for the twelve nights between 24th December and 6th January, where the demons of winter and the Perchten celebrate their wild hunt through hidden Alpine villages and forests. 7" foldout sleeve with inserts.

RICHARD FRANCIS - 'Together Alone, Together Apart' CD (CMR)
"The building blocks of 'Together Alone, Together Apart' by New Zealand's Richard Francis are 'sound moments': sonic interludes of a dozen or so seconds of environmental sound, whose subtle arrangements and cross-contaminations are the springboard for the compositions found here. Given the quiet volumes, sounds at the threshold of audibility are presumably those which have captured his imagination. A soft hiss and variable low end frequency introduce the first untitled track, with small crackles, glitches and echoes sporadically breaking through. The second is considerably more dramatic, with a flapping rhythm emerging from a grounded hiss like a moth's wings beating against glass. The final track is almost undetectable, even with headphones, and strengthens the connections between Francis's work and the reductive strategies of Bernhard Gunter or John Hudak..." [Wire]. With "Found In The Cold", Rising Shadows explores a colder and more distorted, harsh landscape than before, yet still holding up the ethereal beauty with the voice of Linda-li. Lyrically and musically the album is a continuation of the themes from "Falling Deep Within". The dreamy, folk inspired songs are still there with the dark lyrics of a journey through life into death and the catharsis in between. Rising Shadows speak about the world of imagination all of us have in mind; a possible world, full of tales, fantastic creatures and beautiful landscapes. A fantastic journey through the mystical world of faeries, wizards and gnomes. Try to search your lost and sad princess into the deep and dark forest of Scandinavia. Imagine a mix of Dead Can Dance, Ennio Morricone and Kate Bush and you'll getting closer to the sound of Rising Shadows! Digipak.
Reissue of Millis' extremely limited 2008 release (Ltd x 120). Despite his many activities, Millis' recorded output has almost entirely been by way of collaboration, making this gem of a solo album all the more special. Psychedelic smear pocked with snippets of conversation, poetic extracts from his collection of 78s and a judicious amount of vinyl crackling. Blissed out shimmers constructed from loops and drones from guitar, bells, and glass harmonica, where haunted melodies from times long gone whisper through the mix. As if Millis were tapping into some stream of consciousness that subcutaneously connects all of these intermingling sounds. Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak.
Triple-CD set of 1998 Robert Rich live recordings (from shows in Stanford, Venice, and Pasadena, California). Lustmord, "Stalker". The live tapes have been carefully remastered by Robert himself to match the extraordinary standards of his studio recordings. ROBERT SCOTT THOMPSON - 'Poesis Athesis (Music From The Flying Phoenix Films Of Terence Dunn)' CD (Lens Records)
Having originally worked together in the mid-80s, Chi Kung master Terrence Dunn once again contacted Robert Scott Thompson to compose music for his current series of video releases. Thompson composed the music to work specifically with the pace, mood and dynamics of the Flying Phoenix form of Chi Kung. The collaboration eventually spanned ten films and Thompson composed more than ten hours worth of music over a two year period. The thirteen tracks on "Poesis Athesis" are rooted in Thompson's ambient style but also blend with elements of electronica, ethnic influences and a personal homage to French composer Erik Satie. Thompson creates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation suitable for both introspective and meditative moments as well as chill out regeneration. Digipak.

ROBERTO OPALIO - 'The Last Night Of The Angel Of Glass, Vol. I & II' 2 x CD (A Silent Place)
Reissue of the acclaimed "The Last Night Of The Angel Of Glass, Vol.I", original soundtrack to the omonimous film by Roberto Opalio, plus the previously unreleased "Vol.II", representing the second half of a unique recording session. "There is no other cosmic traveller like Roberto Opalio. Best known for his work with his brother as My Cat Is An Alien, this feline twin is slowly building an equally impressive body of solo works. Opalio is on another plane entirely with "The last night of the Angel of Glass." Bypassing the cosmos completely and directing his aim straight to heaven. Using nothing but his guitar and his voice, Opalio sears the stratosphere into orbit. As his voice floats like a ghost into the empty celestial crevices, his guitar falls from the sky like a melted star. This is haunting and magnificent. Roberto Opalio at his best" (Foxy Digitalis).

ROEL MEELKOP & GIUSEPPE IELASI & HOWARD STELZER & FRANS DE WAARD - 'Zondag' CD (Port)
Recorded on the very Sunday after finishing their 2005 album "Brombron", Ielasi and Stelzer hooked up with Roel Meelkop and Frans de Waard to record a delicate work of improvisation, using the studio's old analogue synthesizers, cassette tapes, guitars and electronics. The session was recorded on multi-track and mixed by Frans de Waard shortly after, with some minor revisions by Roel Meelkop much later. Comes with a remix by Evala, Port's in-house composer of all delicate delights. Japanese import in a cardboard sleeve with 'lot number'.
ROEL MEELKOP - '5(Zwischenfälle)' CD (Auf Abwegen)
The latest release by Dutch electronic musician Roel Meelkop (THU20, Kapotte Muziek, Goem) is a special release in his catalogue because it is consists of five pieces, originally used in the context of sound installations. Meelkop set himself the task to compress these soundscapes into five dense and still minimal audio pieces that could work outside the context of the original installations. 5(zwischenfälle) makes for concentrated unpolished ultra minimal listening with maximum effect. For fans of Bernhard Gunter, Francisco Lopez or Marc Behrens. Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak, with artwork by Akifumi Nakajima (Aube).

ROME - 'L'Assassin' MCD (Trisol)
The Assassin - Murder? Crime of passion? Rome's new 'Chanson Noir' speaks of man's enslavement in a world of constant transformation. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more influential in their current work. Chansonniers like Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel and singer / songwriter heroes like Cave, Cash and Cohen are obvious influences. This is the darker side of singer / songwriter tradition: post-industrial-folk with elements of Electro-Pop, complex arrangements of breathtaking melodies, mesmerising ballads of lyrical beauty, underlining Rome's ethos of never faltering or remaining uninvolved. Features four songs, among which the exclusive and intimate track "One Flesh", along with reinvented, "stringed" versions of two classic tracks "Der Erscheinungen Flucht' and 'Der Brandtaucher' (from "Masse Mensch Material"). ROME - 'Masse Mensch Material' CD (Trisol)
Re-issue of Rome's 3rd album, originally released on Cold Meat Industry in 2008. Rome's particular brand of post-industrial folk, combined with new-wave song-writing and neoclassical arrangements, takes on a new and poppy twist. But these outstanding songs have way too much depth to be dismissed as mere pop music. This third album is of a more subtle darkness and probably Rome's best work to date. A work of art of extreme sincerity, "Masse Mensch Material" revolves around the themes of love, faith and endurance. Rome has created a fascinating world of contradictions which each song lays out with clarity and with all the cruelty and kindness intact. Presented in an embossed digipak.

RONNIE SUNDIN - 'Seven Year Silence' CD (Fang Bomb)
By releasing "Seven Year Silence" Ronnie Sundin (once heralded "Sweden's most silent man") announces his departure from the realms of silence with an intelligent noise freak-out of massive proportions. This recording impresses with an innovative take on noise, an immensely deep and detailed interpretation that, just possibly, could help redefine parts of the genre. "The densest, most dynamic and near-impenetrable blasters I’ve yet heard to be issued in the name of electro-acoustic noise" and "A gorgeous release fit to accompany anxieties and emotions of the jet-black variety" (The Sound Projector). Presented in an A5, 12-page booklet with artwork by Sundin.
Russian psychedelic dada-electronics and spacey post-rock. The Russian duo consisting of Eugene & Julica make spacey, abstract instrumentals. Heavily delayed guitar strumming, accompanied by random sounds and minimal hand percussion. Light and airy ambient guitars with subtle rhythms playing alongside synths. Very relaxing yet propagates passion. This is the definition of quirky. Indescribable stylistically. More strangeness, more quality, more inventiveness with a very unique sound! Beautiful noise... a chaotic dream of drones and distortion with ambient, multidimensional, psychedelic and hypnotic guitars. Fans of electronics will be pleased by this dada-like music from the very north of Siberia. 6-panel digipak.

ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)
Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

Despartica is a collection of impressions, situations and moments in life. Desires, beliefs, dreams, emotions, experiences, the beauty of life and the sight of inevitable death in 19th and 20th Century poems "framed" by varied music - from strong industrial rhythms to romantic ballads with melancholic recitations and singing. RUSSELL HASWELL - 'Wild Tracks' CD (Editions Mego)
Russell Haswell returns with a complete departure from his real-time computer generated improvisations. "Wild Tracks" is a collection of ‘deliberate recordings’ made with other multimedia / film projects in mind. These recordings do not contain any overdubs or compression, and document a wide variety of audio experiences: a blowhole in Jamaica, an ant colony, a wasp nest, a helicopter ride and waterfalls, as well as the sound of freshly fallen snow, flies being electrocuted, various military tactical airlift planes, air defence fighters and attack helicopters. The recordings on "Wild Tracks" were realised using a variety of techniques including using hydrophones to record falling snow, recording gamekeepers many fields away with a parabolic dish, as well as binaural, ‘near-field’ & ‘direct’. Reputedly the first commercially released CD to be packaged in a KIDZBOX containing a full colour A2 poster with photographs and detailed recording notes.
