R-A-A-N - 'The Nacrasti' CD (Malignant Antibody / Malignant Records)
The remarkable debut from R-A-A-N (Stig Berg) delivers dark-ambient in it's classic pure-form, at times, conjuring the spirit of "Heresy"-era Lustmord or vintage Raison D'Etre. Heavy ritualistic drones, sporadic rhythmic accents, and deep subsonics that will vibrate your very core. Thematically, "The Nacrasti" explores an ancient desert culture that was advanced beyond its time and yet long forgotten by history. Your dark evolving journey into this lost "Nacrastan" landscape is streaked with the warm hue of sun-bleached rock, sand, gold, and fire. A serenely brooding work with a myriad of nocturnal sub-textures. At times a subtle, almost alien combination of sounds. Dark-drones which intone an element of beauty and power. A critical addition to every dark-ambient collection!

R.Y.N. - 'Archaic Techniques Of Ecstacy' LP (Equation Records)
R.Y.N. are a UK-based duo probably best known for their Astral Death CD (Unrest Productions) and an excellent 7" on Drone Records. On this vinyl-only release R.Y.N. present 44 minutes of completely new recordings: a mix of archaic, unsettling, new and melancholy. This album took many months to record as a result of the careful attention paid to the record by the duo. This LP provides both classic R.Y.N. darkness plus even heavier oppressive, dark, soundscapes that can only be fully appreciated on vinyl over the two side-long tracks: Archaic Techniques Of Ecstacy and Provisional Sketch Of The Mind. RADIO KUOLEMA - '10050 Cielo Drive' CD (Ars Benevola Mater)
With closed eyes Radio Kuolema attempts a real documentary, where the tragic events linked to the Manson 'family' offer the black humus on which the music ideally sticks the obsessions of homicide mysticism which marked out an enduring trail of blood in the american collective unconscious. "10050 Cielo Drive" is the sound, the image, the memory. In these atmospheres the innocence and the frenzy of a world already on the edge of the abyss find shelter: an abyss where the children stare silent at whole cities devoured by flames, while they are still holding tight long knives in their hands. RAFAEL FLORES - 'Nubes, Cometas, Rumores y Orugas' CD (Monochrome Vision)
First official CD album of Rafael Flores who hails from the depth of the Spanish underground noise scene, known for his early works released under Comando Bruno moniker. The music ranges from collaged field recordings to noise ambient loops, and from rhythmic structures to hypnotic electronic passages. Ltd x 500 copies. Russian import.
With "Offering", their 9th album and first for Equilibrium, French heavenly voices act Rajna continue their musical and cultural quest, crossing the Mediterranean and taking us over the Aegean islands, the Cyclades, Crete and Greece, towards Turkey, where Orient and Occident meet. It is an experience in time, back to hidden and forgotten worlds of the Antique, like a pathway to Eleusis and its sacred temples and mysteries. Using a considerable selection of acoustic instruments, Rajna's sound returns to its roots, leaving only limited space for electronics and modern technology. The symphonic orchestration touches both the heart and senses. The entire album is a dream from start to finish along the sun-drenched seashores of ancient rites and traditions. RAMLEH - 'Hole In The Heart' 2 x CD (Dirter)
This material bridges the gap between the early "power electronics" material and the later "noise rock" history of Ramleh. Neither of these terms do justice to this pioneering group led by Gary Mundy. Originally issued by Gary's own "Broken Flag" label in 1987 on cassette, "Hole in the Heart" is now expanded and remastered. To quote Anthony Di Franco: "...swirling phased feedback, fuzzed vocals and guitars. At the same time there were melodies, words and structures in the music, which itself consisted of very simple electronic and acoustic elements magnified to a colossal scale..." This music has a harmonic beauty, if you look for it, that all its imitators lack. Listen and you will hear the genesis of what was to follow from many 90's underground bands such as label mates and close collaborators, Skullflower. Packaged in the classic "Broken Flag" monochrome style and encased in a double "Super Jewel Box".

"Valediction" is very much an entity of its own - both consolidating and expanding upon everything Ramleh have touched on in the past, but also digging into entirely fresh ground for the band. "Valediction" is, perhaps, Ramleh’s most bleakly psychedelic creation so far. RAMONA PONZINI & Z'EV - 'Ankoku' CD (A Silent Place)
Ramona's personal touch is certainly her own particular Japanese chant, together with the use of traditional percussion, bells and cymbals from Japan. Z'EV, enchanted by all those elements, asked Ramona for this cooperation. "Ankoku" is a Japanese word which means "deep darkness". For this debut Ramona's voice and percussion was processed by My Cat Is An Alien in their mysterious studio, placed somewhere in Western Alps, adding some field recordings. Those recordings were then sent to Z'EV who has processed them with some of his typical percussion. Z'EV deconstructed the sweetness of Ramona's chants, enfolding the pieces with a darker atmosphere. 5 obscure tracks, structured on charming vocal melodies moving out from a "haunted house". RAPOON - 'Dark Rivers' CD (Lens Records)
'Dark Rivers is about a particular area in the North of England which stretches from the Solway Firth into the wastelands of the Northumbrian borders. This area is steeped in history and mystery. In particular, I have focused on the development of Britain's Cold War intercontinental ballistic missile weaponry in the late forties and fifties and which later became the center for Britain's space efforts... Many of the place names reflect the ancient cultural beliefs and superstitions - Black Fell, Black Beck, etc. Even today the place is wild and remote and old superstitions live on. The conflict of the ancient superstitions and the cold war paranoia is essentially what this is about. The older superstitions swallowing whole the newer age which came and went on the same dark, brooding hills. I was lucky enough to be born and grow up here and the darkness of the place is embedded deeply inside me." Digipak.

RAPOON - 'From Shadows Sleep' CD (Essence Music)
A unique masterwork of mysterious dark and droney sounds! "From Shadows Sleep" sees Rapoon (aka Robin Storey, ex-Zoviet France) visiting ancient temples, moving between shadowy labyrinths of meticulous drones, echoed tones and distant rumblings, building a hypnotic sonic ritual that brings traces from a distant past in form of atmospheric, spiritual mantras of a possessive power. Ominous and bleak, yet wondrous, trance-inducing soundscapes swirl around majestic droning tape loops, patterns, ethnic samples and other secret devices masterfully arranged to mesmerize the listener. There’s no light in here - you will be guided by Rapoon’s brooding and extremely detailed sonic imagery. RAPOON - 'Melancholic Songs Of The Desert' CD (Soleilmoon)
"These songs were composed during the last days of the Bush / Blair era and reflect the feeling of isolation and disconnection from any part of the political process and any sense of identification with the prevailing air of hostility and intolerance generated by this pair of religious xenophobes. The unjustified war in Iraq and the subsequent lies and propaganda engendered a feeling of revulsion and powerlessness. Once again it was “unpatriotic” to criticize or protest against the government’s actions, and there was a rise in nationalism and extrem- ist views. These songs are a retreat into the one place that no government has yet found a way into, the free and open spaces of the mind. They are spontaneous and mediative reflections looking for an inner peace in a world made ugly by hatred and war. They symbolize a kind of “walkabout” and a reconnection with a lost sense of belonging spiritually, intellectually and physically with the world we inhabit. In a broader sense they also re-affirm long held sympathies with the thoughts of writers and philosophers such as Camus, Sartre and Burroughs, and the profound wisdom of eastern philosophies such as Taoism and Zen. The music here looks for a sense of inner being that one can only find in quiet isolation" (Robin Storey). Presented in a hand made, screen printed (metallic) card sleeve and limited to 500 copies. RAPOON - 'Wasteland Raga' CD (Aquarellist)
Brand new release from ethno-ambient act Rapoon. "While I was recently traveling through Eastern Europe recently, I passed through an area of industrial decline that reminded me strongly of the devastation of the Industrial heartlands of the UK during the early Thatcher years. The broken windows and twisted metal of the abandoned warehouses, the derelict pit-heads and the ruined factories all brought back memories of that grim time when the divide between rich and poor was never so obvious. Yet amongst the derelict factories and the red-brick estates of the North of England new music and art sprang forth as if driven by the desolate conditions. RAPOON / CISFINITUM - 'Mental Travellers' CD (Ewers Tonkunst)
“Mental Travellers" is a collaboration work created by mail during 2006. This record could be considered as an attempt to find the very deep basic background which is common for all the people independent of cultural environment or political barriers between nations and states. The delving into the very depth of the heart exposes these common roots. "Mental Traveller" shows it perfectly with its complex structure and at the same time its simple integrity. It is an excellent blend of both artists’ distinctive features - the esoteric rhythmic patterns and mystical rustles of Robin Storey are intertwined with subtle and beautiful drone ambient waves of Eugene Voronovsky. The result is quite diverse and captivating, reminding more of early Zoviet France than current Rapoon or Cisfinitum works. The final track called "Eurasia" features Russian ethnic female singer Toloka, whose archaic chanting makes a very natural conclusion for this mental travel to humanity's primordial roots. RICHARD CHARTIER - 'Archival 1991' CD (Crouton)
Throughout his recent work, Chartier has continued to present sound as design - clean, simple design, implying colors and direct lines and shapes; a spotless, modern room; a series of colored screens. His release on Crouton predates this taste, when things were a bit more complex, a bit more intense. As his recent work sucks the listener into white space, Archival 1991 takes you straight into a black hole, in the most comfortable way imaginable. This is a different kind of clean simplicity. The work is beautiful, stunning, and most of all, complexly powerful. The recording is based on two compositions from 1991, using analogue and digital synthesizers. In 2003, these original pieces were used as source material for this new work, resulting in an extremely intriguing revisit, and aesthetically true to much of his work from the same period. RICHARD FRANCIS - 'Together Alone, Together Apart' CD (CMR)
"The building blocks of 'Together Alone, Together Apart' by New Zealand's Richard Francis are 'sound moments': sonic interludes of a dozen or so seconds of environmental sound, whose subtle arrangements and cross-contaminations are the springboard for the compositions found here. Given the quiet volumes, sounds at the threshold of audibility are presumably those which have captured his imagination. A soft hiss and variable low end frequency introduce the first untitled track, with small crackles, glitches and echoes sporadically breaking through. The second is considerably more dramatic, with a flapping rhythm emerging from a grounded hiss like a moth's wings beating against glass. The final track is almost undetectable, even with headphones, and strengthens the connections between Francis's work and the reductive strategies of Bernhard Gunter or John Hudak..." [Wire]. Ltd x 300 copies in a digifile with inner sleeve.
"My second solo album is comprised of works for solo piano, distilled from my love for the landscapes of the Welsh Marches and recorded last year in the delirium following my journeying the mythic roads of America as part of United Bible Studies... ‘Swaermian’ was co-composed with The Bricoleur, and premieres a new form of lysergic chamber music." Richard Moult, 2009. "All tracks were recorded live in St Leonard Parish Church in Hastings, thus using the natural reverb of the church as an additional layer to the music.... Slow, meditative music. Spacious music... Moult’s music is like a candle that slowly burns. Totally dark at the end, and the night is well on its way" (Vital Weekly).

RLW - 'Views' CD (Anomalous Records)
In the 25th year of Ralf Wehowsky's recording career, this is his first truly solo release featuring four new compositions based on instrumental improvisations. Using simple devices played in unusual ways, he builds up layers of each sound to create a suite of textural pieces. Each of the four tracks takes on an identity unique from the others, as the first three each focus on one of the sound sources while the last combines elements from the previous three to make something else. The disc opens with a 20-minute piece of mysterious and drifting electronic tones. Other tracks highlight very tactile sounds and bring a much more 'live' element to his work, while retaining his skillful use of dynamics and placement of silence which have gained him so many fans.

ROBERT MILLIS - '120' CD (Etude Records)
Reissue of Millis' extremely limited 2008 release (Ltd x 120). Despite his many activities, Millis' recorded output has almost entirely been by way of collaboration, making this gem of a solo album all the more special. Psychedelic smear pocked with snippets of conversation, poetic extracts from his collection of 78s and a judicious amount of vinyl crackling. Blissed out shimmers constructed from loops and drones from guitar, bells, and glass harmonica, where haunted melodies from times long gone whisper through the mix. As if Millis were tapping into some stream of consciousness that subcutaneously connects all of these intermingling sounds. Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak.
Triple-CD set of 1998 Robert Rich live recordings (from shows in Stanford, Venice, and Pasadena, California). Over three hours of music, utilising some of the techniques of Rich's renowned "Sleep Concerts," as well as some sounds and interpretations of his highly-regarded collaboration with B. Lustmord, "Stalker". The live tapes have been carefully remastered by Robert himself to match the extraordinary standards of his studio recordings. Fans of all phases of Rich's career will want to have this. This is sure to rank among Rich's most important works. Double size jewelcase.

ROBERT RICH - 'Somnium' DVD (Hypnos)
2008 reissue of Rich's 2001 epic! "Somnium" is a re-creation of Robert Rich's famous "sleep concerts," which began during Rich's time at Stanford University. These sleep concerts have been much discussed, but rarely witnessed. Consequently, a lot of speculation and mystery has grown about them. Rich has meticulously crafted a studio interpretation of his notorious all-night Sleep Concerts, combining newly-recorded electro-acoustic, environmental and electronic textures, with elements created for the original live events. The deep and sonorous flow of "Somnium" guides the listener through hypnogogic states, through a mysterious and ever-changing dreamscape, with levels of subtle detail that reward both active attention and background listening. The tech bit: "Somnium" is an ordinary DVD disc, playable in all regular DVD players, as well as DVD-rom drives on a PC or Mac... to put it another way, it's a DVD-video with music only, no picture (aside from the menus). The DVD format was used because to enable the storage of 7 HOURS (!!!) of continuous audio on one side of one disc! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

ROBERT SCOTT THOMPSON - 'Poesis Athesis (Music From The Flying Phoenix Films Of Terence Dunn)' CD (Lens Records)
Having originally worked together in the mid-80s, Chi Kung master Terrence Dunn once again contacted Robert Scott Thompson to compose music for his current series of video releases. Thompson composed the music to work specifically with the pace, mood and dynamics of the Flying Phoenix form of Chi Kung. The collaboration eventually spanned ten films and Thompson composed more than ten hours worth of music over a two year period. The thirteen tracks on "Poesis Athesis" are rooted in Thompson's ambient style but also blend with elements of electronica, ethnic influences and a personal homage to French composer Erik Satie. Thompson creates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation suitable for both introspective and meditative moments as well as chill out regeneration. Digipak.

ROME - 'L'Assassin' MCD (Trisol)
The Assassin - Murder? Crime of passion? Rome's new 'Chanson Noir' speaks of man's enslavement in a world of constant transformation. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more influential in their current work. Chansonniers like Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel and singer / songwriter heroes like Cave, Cash and Cohen are obvious influences. This is the darker side of singer / songwriter tradition: post-industrial-folk with elements of Electro-Pop, complex arrangements of breathtaking melodies, mesmerising ballads of lyrical beauty, underlining Rome's ethos of never faltering or remaining uninvolved. Features four songs, among which the exclusive and intimate track "One Flesh", along with reinvented, "stringed" versions of two classic tracks "Der Erscheinungen Flucht' and 'Der Brandtaucher' (from "Masse Mensch Material"). "The densest, most dynamic and near-impenetrable blasters I’ve yet heard to be issued in the name of electro-acoustic noise" and "A gorgeous release fit to accompany anxieties and emotions of the jet-black variety" (The Sound Projector). Presented in an A5, 12-page booklet with artwork by Sundin.

ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)
Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

RUKKANOR - 'Despartica - Face One' CD (War Office Propaganda)
Despartica is a collection of impressions, situations and moments in life. The particular parallel between lyrics based on old poetry (Blake, Yeats, Rosetti etc), and all that happens nowadays, often creates an atmosphere of bitter reflection and irony. Desires, beliefs, dreams, emotions, experiences, the beauty of life and the sight of inevitable death in 19th and 20th Century poems "framed" by varied music - from strong industrial rhythms to romantic ballads with melancholic recitations and singing. The recordings on "Wild Tracks" were realised using a variety of techniques including using hydrophones to record falling snow, recording gamekeepers many fields away with a parabolic dish, as well as binaural, ‘near-field’ & ‘direct’.
