OLHON - 'Underwater Passage' CD (Eibon Records)
"Underwater passage" is based upon underwater recordings taken in 2006 by Zairo (Where), which were then treated by Massimo Magrini (Bad Sector). These recordings were taken using special sensing microphones attached to an abandoned telephone cable running on the seabed at -40m. They were then processed with particular demodulating treatments, resulting in a complex and rich ambiental monument, with strange clicks, impulses and a lot of movements. Definitely far from the usual concept of dark ambient, "Underwater passage" shimmers with cutting mid / high frequencies bursts. Digipak.

A four track mini CD combining the never released two 10" vinyl 'Maus' and 'Die Hennen Zähne'. 'Die Hennen Zähne' opens with 'Die Kralle', actually a David Jackman track from his archive, recorded in the early 1980's. Next is the title track 'Die Hennen Zähne', a joyful noise not unlike some of the The New Blockaders / Organum material including the sound of broken glass and tibetan horns. "Two tracks recorded in 2003 with only a vague hint of the classic Organum sound. The drone material is there, but the sound is slightly similar to The New Blockaders, with the addition of random piano chords. On side two, there is the distorted sound of Tibetan horns added on a similar bed of sounds. It's a distinct break away from the pure Organum drone sound, with an interesting addition of new sounds that especially in 'Happy' works well. David Jackman/Organum still knows how to surprise his followers and is a remarkable conceptualist" [FdW]. Regular edition of 400 copies.
The two tracks featured here are a further development from the "Die letzte Musik vor dem Krieg" 7". Jackman offers a stately cluster of looped piano chords, with the sustain pedal firmly depressed. Following "Tinnitus Vu" (Touch, 2004), "Tocsin" is the first full length album by these two renowned sound artists. Whereas Z'EV simply reworked already existing work by Jackman for "Tinnitus Vu", this time the artists agreed to both meet in the studio for "Tocsin". They created and recorded sounds from a piano and a stainless steel piece built by Z'EV circa 1989, over the course of several hours, took the recordings home, and after a period of each one mixing these sounds by themselves came up with what can be heard on this CD. The debut album of Russian experimental post-rock group Osoka, based in Rostov-on-Don. Their sound draws from influences ranging from sludge and doom metal, with stoner rock background to dark ambient and industrial music on the other pole. Portuguese avant-garde ensemble Osso Exótico have created a stunning body of work since 1989 (current members being André Maranha, David Maranha and Patricia Machás). With very little history to be found about the band, the music speaks for itself. Percussionist Z’EV, who has spent the better part of 40 years finding ways to coax sound out of material, and then creating a mystic cacaphony out of it, also uses sound as communication. Together, this grouping produces quite a statement, as sound becomes something unexplained by words, yet shared as an experience. This isn’t glassine drone music. It spews the grit of Tony Conrad and the trance of Terry Riley, while radiating the experience of a sweat lodge in a behemoth explosion of tribal minimalism. With no sound processing, the result is a highly natural, grossly enigmatic, and deeply energised recording. The power is yours for the taking. The works of those damned: Kazimierz Raton (1942-1983), Marek Hlasko (1934-1969) and Edward Stachura (1937-1979) was inspiration for this moving album. This 40-minute epic moves from pulverizing industrial dirge blanketed with heavily textured layers of processed guitar and fearsome guttural roars intermixed with captivating female vocals, to passages of haunting dark ambience and bottom-heavy churn, and a magisterial finale that stretches gloom-ridden moody riffage, vaporous electronics and dramatic male / female singing across the song's final fifteen minutes, a tense, slow buildup that erupts into an earth-shaking crescendo of super heavy riffage. Immensely bleak and heavy, "Born Again" brings together elements of Godflesh's industrial pummel, black metal, tribal dirge , the violent nihilism of Swans, doomy death metal, and even some black strains of psychedelia into a monumental metallic black hole. Over 11 years in the making (1995-2006), 'Seraphim Hallucino' is widely considered to be Act 2 of the "virtual" opera trilogy begun by Oblivion Ensemble's 1995 release of 'Nightmare: Sinistrotorse'. At Seraphim Hallucino's source are strange, electro-acoustic improvisations of percussion, trumpet, voice, synthesizers and guitar- sculpted and sampled, twisted and turned, shaped into building and diminishing moments, and, at times appearing alone, pure and unmodified. Deeply imbedded in the music and fragmented lyrics are secrets, intertwining themes, voices, and imprinted messages. All come together to create an enormously complex, mercurial mix of surreal, dynamic and dark sounds.
