M. KOURIE - 'The Dreams Of M. Kourie' CD (Chrome Peeler)
Solo debut by Californian Nathan Berlinguette of 5/5/2000, The Human Quena Orchestra, and Creation Is Crucifixion. 'The Dreams Of...' sets a course for the heart of a black hole, and takes the scenic sonic route getting there. This is the sound of stargazing, a blackened landscape of warm shimmer that imperceptibly shifts and contorts, each new shape even more abstract and more black than the shape before, tracing a minimal path that simultaneously drifts beneath the sea, through subterranean caverns, amidst the vacuum of space and through the impossibility of alternate universes. Soft rumbles, warm chordal swells, glistening abstract melodies, drifting gauzy shimmer, all falling into one another and making the journey special. Packaged in a simple folded black sleeve, printed with gold foil. Features guest appearances by Tim Green (The Fucking Champs) and Ryan Unks (Creation Is Crucifixion, Circadia).

MAATH - 'No Survivors For The New World' CD (Eibon Records)
Debut album from this Italian artist. Based upon the concept of coma, sleep and suspended animation, "No Survivors For The New World" gently brings you through a dormant world, where dreams flow freely around you, leaving a coloured trace in the cold and dark void. Melodic dark ambient of the finest kind; round, deep, mesmerizing. Are you ready for your new world? Presented in a beautiful digisleeve.
"...a gorgeously minimal guitar workout that reminds us of another aQ fave, Part Timer, with it's sleep guitar figures, wreathed in digital glitch, bits of crackle and streaks of hiss, every now and then a thick distorted guitar surfaces, only to drift off again, leaving lots of space for that lonely guitar to drift through. Stuttery, skipping, sudden moments of near silence, but all peppered throughout a slowly unfurling expanse of warbly woozy fractured folk, soft and pretty, spacious and minimal, the glitchiness mostly adding texture, rarely interrupting the song's dreamy drift" (Aquarius). Ltd x 381 on black vinyl.
MACHINEFABRIEK - 'Ranonkel' CD (Burning World Records)
'Ranonkel' marks a break in form from the recent output, avoiding all sense of this being another ephemeral transmission from the Machinefabriek hard drive, and instead sounding like a fully formed bonafide album, a worthy follow-up to 'Marijn'. Rutger Zuydervelt combines the very best of his microsound work with an explicitly tuneful instrumental element... an infinitely graceful backdrop of high frequency sine tones, crackle and slow chords. The finest Machinefabriek outing of 2008 by some margin - you'll be returning to the opening piece in particular again and again. Matt digifile.

Mainliner was started in 1995 by Asahito Nanjo from High Rise and Acid Mothers Temple leader Kawabata Makoto, in order 'to explore new possibilities' which would create 'a completely new type of heavy psychedelic group.' Mainliner introduced the world to the free-jazz drummer, Hajime Koizumi, and Kawabata Makoto's 'Motor Psycho' electric guitar. Japanese Psychedelic Noise at it’s best.

Both poles could be clearly seen here, divided stylistically and ideologically - Majdanek Waltz martial / dark folk hymns expressing one side’s view, while Sal Solaris ambient-industrial tracks are the memories of their recent enemies". MALEFICIA - 'Maleficia' LP (isounderscore)
"Maleficia is the bay area duo of Andy Way (Orchest, French Radio, Carrion) and Ilysea Viles Sunderman, who crafted this desolate, post-industrial smear of voice, violin, and electronics for the always impressive isounderscore label. With the titles of the two side long pieces being "Making" and "Remaking," Maleficia offers a crucible of elemental sounds being obliterated into a charred dust and rebuilt into ashen constructions of misery and disgust... The industrialized loops that wraps around the voice and violin come across like a slow-motion Maurizio Bianchi on par with the downer records he did with Land Use or the grim power electronic phase in the early '80s. Certainly for fans of Amber Asylum, early Lustmord, and the dark ambient aspects of Broken Flag" (Aquarius). Ltd x 400 copies.

MARC BEHRENS / PAULO RAPOSO - 'Hades' CD (and/OAR)
Adorning the cover of this release is a beautiful image of ferry boats on a calm, yet brooding expanse of water; and it's from these ferries that all the original sounds were sourced. They were then reformed, reprocessed and manipulated to make a series of hauntingly beautiful sound sculptures that carry all the hallmarks of menace and darkness that the name would suggest. Resonant textures, high frequencies, noisy punctuations, which are evocative of the original source material. Stark interludes combine to give the listener a very compelling listen indeed. MATHIAS DELPLANQUE - 'Ma Chambre Quant Je N'Y Suis Pas (Montreal)' CD (Mondes Elliptiques)
This is the stereo version of a sound installation presented at Montreal's Studio Cormier in December 2004. The piece is based on the recording of 'silences', i.e. the recording of sound produced in spaces with no human presence. The sound of an 'empty' Studio Cormier was used as the material for the production of this piece. The sound takes were done during the quietest moments of the day, by means of microphones placed strategically throughout the Studio by the artist. The sounds gathered were then amplified and their frequencies accentuated to the extreme. The result of the experiment, as presented here, constitutes a genuine drone odyssey playing on fullness and emptiness, presence and absence, 'speak' and 'non-speak'. One long track full of subtle movement and enlivened with underlying currents. Limited to 500 copies in a textured sleeve with inserts. Mondes Elliptiques is a division of Angle.Rec, Canada.
MATHIAS GRASSOW & THOMAS WEISS - 'Outland' CD (Faria Records)
A reflection from outer spaces in between the universe of our mind. A miniature of the endless space from far behind mankind's tangibility. To understand the real essence of the heart of the matter, often it is necessary to take a look from the distance. Just this distance shows structures and connections, which are otherwise impossible to see and grasp - because everyone himself is part of a certain situation. Therefore “Outland” stands for a journey into an “outer land”, to become an advanced view for realisation. Ltd x 500 copies in an outsized package with inserts. Russian import.
'Namakar' is a description of our different initiation rites; Australian-Aboriginal, Egyptian, Red Indian and Tibetan. MECHA / ORGA - '56:24' CD (Absurd)
Mecha / Orga is the name chosen by Yiorgis Sakellariou from Greece. This work, indicated by it's length, was created one afternoon in February 2006, and played live thereafter a couple of times. The length becomes the title, and the listener can come up with his or her own story. Over the course of the fifty-six minutes and twenty-four seconds Sakellariou plays a slowly unfolding piece of Drone music, which grows in intensity throughout. When you think nothing more can be added, he adds another layer. And another. And another. Most suitable to play in the dark, at night. Or during the day, outside, watching plants grow. Multi-purpose music, I'd say. Great stuff. Powerful music. [FDW / Vital Weekly]. Presented in a full-colour wallet.

MEGAPTERA - 'Extended Chaos' 2 x CD (Autarkeia)
Another release to celebrate 15 years of Megaptera! "Extended Chaos" consists of two old releases, "Near Death" and "Beautiful Chaos". "Near Death" (cassette, Sound Source 1991) was Megaptera's first official release and is the only release with all 3 members (Peter Nyström, Magnus Pettersson, Mikael Svensson). Using drum machine, various synths, movies, TV, radio and microphone they created a totally analogue and dirty death theme. On this CD, 3 bonus tracks are added from the same period. Get prepared for old school! "Beautiful Chaos" (MCD, Fever Pitch 1998), has been extended to 10 tracks. The extra material is the two classic tracks 'Shadowland' and 'Sodom' from the "Death Odors" compilation, the two tracks from the "In the Butchers Backyard" compilation, a bombastic remix of the apocalyptic 'Final Day' (by The Protagonist) and an extended version of 'Shadowland', remixed by Peter Nyström and Magnus Sundström. The sound of "Beautiful Chaos" is structured and heavy with an "end of the world" theme, using sampled and mixed sounds. Mastered by Magnus Sundström. Ltd x 500 hand-numbered copies in a stunning foldout digipak, with an embossed slipcase. Highly recommended!
MEGAPTERA - 'Staring Back At You' CD (Malignant Records)
The definitive last statement from this prominent and highly influential Death Industrial project. "Staring Back At You" collects demo versions, outtakes, and rare songs from various arenas, including the rare compilations "Zyklon B", "Beating the Meat", "Slaughter Age '95", "The Book Ov Shadowz", "Death Odors II", as well as material from the "Deep Inside" MLP and more - all remastered for this release. These tracks capture Megaptera at their grittiest, creepiest, and most horrifying... a grinding, lurching monstrosity fueled by the madness, violence, lies, wars, and disease that plague the world. 'Staring Back At You' is final nail in the coffin for Megaptera, and may they rest in peace, but continue to deliver nightmares, maddening thoughts, and the darkest of obsessions. MERZBOW - 'Anicca' CD (Cold Spring CSR107CD)
The first track on Merzbow's latest opus was recorded at Tin Pan Alley studios, London, on 20th April 2008 - the day after his momentous performance at ULU. Akita created an astounding and very unique 20-minute track, playing freestyle drums over his trademark noise. The final 2 tracks were created at Munemi House in Tokyo. Another fine example of why Merzbow is the undisputed King of Japanese Noise! 58 minutes in total.
We salute the ferocious torrents of abused, imploding and exploding electronics, the sharp, pulverizing and abrasive high frequencies and the unrelenting punishment of frenzied throbbing machine-screams witnessed in the controlled cacophonic environment of the latest Merzbow offering! "Camouflage" plays by the straight MERZBOW rules, going back to his comfort zone of audio barbarism. Ltd x 800 copies in a deluxe gatefold hardback sleeve.
One of the earlier lap top style releases from Merzbow, more gentle than many of his releases. "Collapse 12 Floors" is a blistering, hypnotic float down a river of scrap metal. MERZBOW - 'Metamorphism' CD (Very Friendly)
"Metamorphism" is a powerfully emotional, violently painful, and strangely ambient work - ungodly deep and loud pulses, around which is wrapped all sorts of whistling and buzzing. Pocket-friendly reissue of the legendary marble box, in a slimline jewel case. Ltd x 500.
"The basis of this work was recorded in a radiostation in Oslo and later reworked in Merzbow's bedroom studio. This disc from the Japanese master builds after many minutes into noise, but this is structured, rhythmic, surging blasts of localised power. French act Monarch! unleash a slow motion avalanche of impossibly glacial, blackened sludge and hypnotic feedback, each song a series of epic tarpit riffage, stretched out eternally over lumbering drums and cavernous rumbles. Over these yawning expanses of black void appears the demonic, throat-shredding shrieks and ghostly singing of Emilie, whose petite appearance belies one of the harshest throats in the underground Doom spectrum. Presented in an offset-printed, gatefold digifile with all new artwork. North American edition.
Dense, abstract, challenging, and confrontational. Monno stands out from the legacy of doomsayers that includes Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Whitehouse, and more recently Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt. Monno are impressively abrasive in sending atomic blasts of fury, but beneath the shock value of these overwhelming sonic miasmas are throat-grappling melodies evoking a dense, brutal trance. The CD is presented in a very nice silver outsized booklet.

MONNO - 'Ghosts' CD (Conspiracy Records)
Monno have come a long way, extending their malignant nature through thick layers of fog. For this new burial they've built a soundtrack like creeper with traces of gargling glass and atonal spheres that swing through the tracks like unidentified floating objects in the sky. At times you get the feeling your brain is attached to a mechanical beehive suffering various degrees of degradation resulting from the ingress of water and salt attacks. Without doubt their most brutal and menacing album to date, etheric yet droning vocals covered in doom frost... An impaired psychomotor as troublesome as the stars that hang above us, with the reeking odor of a thousand corpses. Think along the abandoned shores of Corrupted, Burning Witch, Ulver or Godflesh. MONSTRARE - 'Novum Ott' CD (Force Of Nature)
Cordell Klier's second Monstrare release was a surprise blast of originality in the dark ambient genre when it was released in 2003. This release largely continues the frozen drone theme with bleak, Dark Ambient soundscapes and horrifying moments of intense terror-filled drone. 10 tracks of seething darkness and demonic / ritualistic overtones.
Split release between Monstrare (aka Cordell Klier) and Wilt. Monstrare feeds us with new-school sonorities as Wilt opts for old-school sounds, each using the source sound material of the other to crystallize his own visions, and vice versa. One will easily recognise the traditional ambient and subtle black noise of Wilt, with Monstrare doing the dark-clicked drone he is renowned for. Ltd x 500 in deluxe cardboard digifile sleeve.

MOON FAR AWAY - 'New Hymn Of Russia' Enhanced MCD (Shadowplay Release)
This long-awaited work from Russian apocalyptic folk / darkwave act Moon Far Away is a 7-track maxi-single which makes a lyrical dedication to its country with the song "Mama Rus": a "New National Anthem of Russia". The disc also includes a multi-media section, including a clip of the song "Zhito Zhala", the movie "You Vzoydi, Krasno sun" and a photo gallery of MFA over the years. Includes mixes / versions from Requiem For FM, Tit/IO, Six Dead Bulgarians (aka Six Dead Bulgars), Severe Illusion, Astralasia and E-Sex-T. Russian import.

MOON FAR AWAY - 'Sator' CD (Brudenia)
The second album from this cult ritual / neofolk / ethereal act. "Sator" expands the boundaries of MFA's sound image even more, going deeper into the ethno-esoteric genre and using symbols of early Christianity. The experiments with folk instruments and with the structure of the musical pieces, and the unprecedented atmosphere and ritual orientation of the rhythm structures make "Sator" a complete musical pattern dedicated to the mystery of eternal return lived through over and over again. Moon Far Away sing of the harmony of man’s material outer space and the unexplored spiritual inner space". Rare 1st Edition! Russian import.

MORTIIS - 'Anden Som Gjorde Oppror' CD (Projekt)
2007 reissue of the Mortiis classic Ånden Som Gjorde Opprør', originally released on Cold Meat Industry in 1995. As a member of Emperor, Mortiis was one of the notorious members of the fanatic Norwegian Black-metal scene. Through a natural evolution, Mortiis made his way into the Scandinavian dark-electronic scene. These lengthy pieces present a regal yet ancient mood; as if the soundtrack for ancient castles filled with forlorn kings looking out upon their lost kingdoms. MOURMANSK 150 - 'Triumphant Over Your Remains' CD (Eibon Records)
Power Electronics / Harsh Noise at its highest, most violent, intense and roughest levels. These ingredients define what long-standing French act MOURMANSK 150 will harm, kill, topple and destroy. And they shall stand, triumphant over your remains. 13 untitled slabs of violence. Digifile.
The ultimate East coast / West coast soundclash as Oregon’s Yellow Swans and Brooklyn’s Mouthus present a smouldering document from their onstage interactions on their 2006 US tour. The sound of Mouthus’s splat&clatter percussion and sheets of severely altered guitar and voice noise paired with Yellow Swans’ raucous axe-mangling and sublime noise processing make for a gargantuan oil tanker of sound that can’t avoid enveloping the listener. ‘Live On Conan Island’ is a range of monstrous caverns of free electro skronk, alt-percussion and wailing guitars. MUSLIMGAUZE - 'Sulaymaniyah’ CD (Staalplaat)
Part of Staalplaat's ongoing Muslimgauze archive series, with masters originally submitted in 1997, then “replaced” by what became "Vampire of Tehran" released early in 1998. Short of two tracks ( “Fez Tishan” and “Hamas Pulse of Revenge”), this is "Vampire of Tehran" with nine additional, unreleased tracks. "Sulaymaniyah" is stylistically varied... ethno-electro, ethno-breakbeat, dub cuts, catchy, distortion ridden breaks and heavily edited ethnic music, cut-up and reassembled into Frankenstein hybrids. Wanton mixtures of styles are one of many defining qualities of Muslimgauze music. For those who appreciate the latter, rhythmic ethno-breaks and dub phase of Muslimgauze circa "Tandoori Dog", "Sulaymaniyah" is a must have. MUSLIMGAUZE - 'Sycophant Of Purdah' CD (Staalplaat)
Part of Staalplaat's ongoing Muslimgauze archive series, "Sycophant of Purdah" was submitted in 1994 then “replaced” by another master Bryn Jones felt more fit for release. "Sycophant" then languished in the vaults until present, nearly a decade after Jones' passing. Despite being of the same sub-genre as the old-school Industrial stylings of "Zealot", "Blue Mosque" etc, "Sycophant" could be considered a 'missing link' that ties them together - with ethno-breaks added for variance. None of the track listings, handwritten by Jones, are repeated on any other release, hence "Sycophant of Purdah" is a must have for fans and collectors. MÖSE - 'Halfway To Nowhere' CD (Solitude Procuctions)
Möse translates to Sludge in south-west Flemish. No coincidence. After a self-titled single and a split with Hog Mountin, Möse now release their first full-length album after many years of work. High quality sludge / Doom from the Belgian project featuring members of Neuthrone and Thee Plague of Gentlemen. The powerful sound is ensured by professional mastering and the crushing compositions of "Halfway to Nowhere" proclaim the appearance of a new serious representative of the style in Europe.
Alabama-based Hog Mountin are a pissed off sludge doom band that lie somewhere in between Grief, Crowbar and Eyehategod. You can expect pretty heavy "scream the lungs out" sludge throughout most of the music. On the second part of the split you get a couple of killer tunes by the Belgians Möse (featuring members of Neuthrone, Thee Plague Of Gentlemen and Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat...), a misanthropic sludge-metal outfit with one previous 7". Heavy and crushing, yet uniquely weird.
