A most refreshing, back-to-basics composition from Rutger Zuydervelt. 'Duotoon' is said to be inspired by the works of Alvin Lucier and Steinbruchel - an intriguing pairing of influences, but you can certainly hear their respective fingerprints all over this fine concoction. As Zuydervelt himself is keen to point out, there are "no dusty vinyl crackles, textural field recordings or grainy guitars here... just pure tones." A statement like that is itself music to the ears, implicitly acknowledging and shunning elements that are increasingly becoming platitudinous mainstays of the ambient/microsound genre. 'Duotoon' is all about nuanced harmonic interplay and layered micro-intervals, drawing the ear toward clever phasing effects and infinitesimal melodic development. On the surface it's all very simple, but it's within this economical, back-to-basics construction that the piece's great strength resides. With this remarkable MCD containing the most intensely affecting Machinefabriek recording since last year's career-defining 'Dauw'. 'Loops For Voerman' was recorded as part of an art installation/sculpture by Rob Voerman but doesn't rely on any visual association for its unique, almost harrowing quality. Sublime drone music and field recordings by Rutger Zuydervelt. 'Slovensko I & II' are best seen as a travel diary, recorded in Slovakia. RZ made 'sound snapshots' with a small digital recorder. A major influence both while recording and assembling the tracks was Chinese sound artist Yan Jun. 'Rusland' is a sound collage comprising field recordings and sections of live performances made in Russia. An incredible adventure and culture shock with long train journeys, bizarre venues and amazing people. 'The Breaking Water' can be heard as a sonic portrait of Rotterdam's famous Erasmus bridge. It includes recordings taken from both on and beneath the bridge, along with further sounds from the river that it crosses, the Nieuwe Maas. 'Floor & Radio' is a contrast to the outdoor pieces recorded for the the installation 'Licthung' in Radolfzell, Germany. Contrasted against the outdoor silence was the squeaking floor in the guest house and the distorted signal and static from the radio. Sometimes there's music in everything. Makino Takashi asked RZ to perform a score for his film 'In Your Star'. After a screening in Tokyo, a studio version was recorded. The result is 'Apollo', a sonic journey to space and beyond. 'Vloed' is a collection of (slightly edited) live performances, recorded between 2006 and 2008 in Amsterdam and Den Haag. "All performances find Machinefabriek in fine form, offering up thick billows of warm guitar shimmer, fluttery staticky ambience, and at one point some uncharacteristically heavy super distorted metallic guitar, but here, it's not so much metal as simply a mighty drone, thick and throbbing and super intense. There are long stretches of near silence and super minimal high end drone, glimmering slow building crescendos, squalls of distorted choral buzz, warm whirring metallic reverberations, shimmery and dense black dronemusik, all the stuff we love about Machinefabriek" (Aquarius). "This is a collection of recordings culled from 3" CD releases from Dutch musician Rutger Zuydervelt, yet arranged and sequenced in a way that makes it a perfectly flowing listening experience. The warm ambience definitely harks back to some ground level krautworks, but almost every instrument blurs into placid soundscapes that are constantly shifting and evolving, electronic crackles rise out of dark lakes of guitar drone; the sounds are very intimate, immediate, not overwhelmingly dark but definitely indicating Zuydervelt's past as a guitarist in a doom band. With both live instruments and assorted programming, the sheer human emotion injected into a machinated music form is stunning, and the variety of places these tracks go to are timed perfectly to hold the listeners' attention and reveal a seemingly limitless bank of ideas that I can't recall being utilised since the golden days of Seefeel's Polyfusia record. Maeror Tri existed from 1988-1996 (members now recording as Troum and 1000schoen). Over those nine years they made a serious contribution to the development of the European post-industrial scene, focusing on the transcendental quality of sound, its ability to expand consciousness and to awaken timeless and non-personal spiritual experiences. They recorded their industrial drone ambient music with the use of guitars, percussion, tape loops, various objects and effects, turning everything in a coherent flux of unconscious drones. This CD contains the last unreleased recordings by Maeror Tri. Four tracks are fragments of the band's 12-hour concert at the Audio-Visual-Experimental festival in Arnhem, Netherlands in November 1995; the fifth track is a part of their performance at the Musique Ultimes festival in Nevers, France in May 1995. Patrick McGinley and Behrens recorded the studio equipment itself, the drive noises, ventilation, vibrations in the machines, the studio’s air conditioning, doors… This particular array of sound forms the sole and exclusive basic material for Architectural Commentary 5: Some Models for Resonant Behaviour and links the cycle to earlier music pieces constructed with sounds from computer labs. Loosely based on Luigi Nono’s idea of ‘isole musicali’. "More field recordings here, this time around taken from the Amazonas, Brazil, to precise the Mamori Lake. Shoemaker taped the sounds there and treats the whole thing into one piece of music that lasts 64 minutes. If I was to imagine how the Amazonian rainforest would sound like, I think it would sound like this. A fairly thick mass of busy buzzing insect sounds, birds and wind like sounds. Shoemaker opts for a dramatic approach in this work: things start out relatively quiet and moody, but over the course of those 60 some minutes grows with some violent intention. Shoemaker uses strong equalisation, adding low end sounds to the piece, that makes the earth tremble among the heavy weight of this piece. Yet he never loses the clarity of the sounds, birds and insects are always to be recognised here. An excellent piece along the lines of the best of Francisco Lopez (who organises the annual Mamori Sound Project. Shoemaker delivers a great work, perhaps his best so far" (Vital Weekly). The Italian electronics maestro seems to be still going strong after around 30 years with his latest release. Opener 'Ortini' is like the hazey recollection of a long train journey being put through an analogue filter bank. 'The Inflammatory Sesor' has a kind of feeling of nostalgia or distant memory that recalls William Basinski or The Caretaker. 'Oigada' sounds like two decomposing tape loops slightly out of sync creating a disorientating phasing effect. There are some very absorbing sounds here to get lost in. In the planning (and many faxes, emails and discussions in person) for 20 years, finally this stunning collaborative release for Cold Spring from Japanese Noise king Merzbow and legendary elemental sound artist Z'EV is here. The tracks were created in London and Tokyo, with each artist remixing the other's original sounds. Two tracks weighing in at 22 minutes and 28 minutes respectively! Dark Ambient Noise in a special textured card digisleeve.
"Age of 369" was originally released on cassette in 1984. The lesser known "Chant 2" is also from this period and complements the sonic intensity of the other. Of further importance is the influence of Maurizio Bianchi (MB) and the mail art that was integral to the industrial underground. These reissues document significant works from Japan's Noise master. Made with a cheap tape recorder and a lot of tape loops, which were then manipulated by hand. "Lowest Music 2" was a very early example of that. Then Merzbow mixed more tape loops with more harsh noise. "Age of 369" (Mlroku No Yo) and "Chant 2" are the finest early examples of that. The Japanese title of "Age of 369" was inspired by the Omoto Cult, founded by Onisabura Degughi. The double CD re-release of "Age of 369" (miroku No Yo) and Chant 2" combines both the music and the Mail Art of this period and is a fitting document of Merzbow In 1984. Australian import. This disc from the Japanese master builds after many minutes into noise, but this is structured, rhythmic, surging blasts of localised power. Reminds of old Skullflower, Holland Skin Tunnel, a loud Nurse With Wound. This is because it feels so instrumental, almost as if a guitar or two are involved in this. From there we return to Akita's early style where the walls of noise were not so loud and thick. The latest work from Dutch composer Michel Banabila. The music is created mainly from electrical sources, but the approach is not clinical, rather mechanical, loud, intrusive, but also has a distinct human factor to it. Mathias Josefsons one-man-project Moljebka Pvlse from Stockholm, Sweden here stretches the boundaries of ambient drone-music, perhaps a surprising listen for those accustomed to his other recordings put out by Eibon and Cold Meat Industry to name a few. This work to a larger degree features a sound pallette unarguably harsher than his other recordings. Tons of frenzied, computerised, but crispy clear distortion flows out over you like an ice wall and leaves the listener in a nervous state, begging for a warming aftermath. Static walls of rampant treated guitars and billowing droney backgrounds screaming endlessly out over the cold plains of the earth. Ambient gourmets also get their piece, though somewhat in a more experimental way. The final track is the 16-minute long soundtrack to the movie "A Bird Is Not An Animal" by D & D Productions. Murmer is the pseudonym for Patrick McGinley. His field recordings of activated environments (resonant industrial spaces, windswept telephone lines, bowed branches, gasping ventilator systems etc.) originate from all of the locations where he has travelled. In spiraling his manipulated field recordings as a slow revelation of the environmental sonorities that undeservedly go unnoticed each and every day. Singing frequencies of a bowed piece of metal undulate against a grey tapestry of rain and rasping insects. Golden overtones from shimmering drones quell what agitated textures reside in McGinley's active field recordings, rendering the aggregate sound a nocturnal opiate with considerable potency.
