Over time the meaning has changed, for genius loci refers to the cultural significance and then the emotional, which is attributed to a site, for an area or city, usually refers to a location's distinctive atmosphere, or a "spirit of place", rather than necessarily a guardian spirit. It is therefore an expression of "character" of a place, its characteristics interwoven with the habits and customs of the people who live there. In this case assumes the role of genius loci which takes time to establish contact with our ancestors. The CD presents an introspective journey through martial ambient and ritualistic epic sounds, to reflect and find a contact between man and the protection of the place. This is the first solo album in a decade by this French artist (member of Zonk’t / Nox and label manager of Odd Size). ‘Downfall’ is a single track which develops ultra slowly, with very low, organic rumbling and hypnotic bass. The composition seems minimalistic but yet complex, absorbing and disintegrating, cold yet organic. ‘Disperse’ is also a singular track, but is more in the vein of concrete electro-acoustic music. Inspired by the compositions of Steve Reich, loops are copied, layered and moved around, so that the listener is under the permanent impression of growing turbulence and spatial buzzing.

A remarkable document of a live performance recorded on September 11th, 2003 at No, 20 Warehouse, Nagoya Port, Japan. The sounds heard in this recording were created by Kiyoharu Kuwayama's application of dry ice to four steel tables which were heated by candles. No electronic processing or post-production editing of the performance was made. Lethe / Kiyoharu Kuwayama is known for creating and recording work in highly resonant spaces or charged atmospheres (abandoned warehouses, Shinto temples, etc). Kiyoharu is also known for his involvement with the duo Kuwayama - Kijima (Kiyoharu Kuwayama: cello, and Rina Kijima: violin). Digipak. Duality is at once sacred and playful. It is both dark and light, organic and refined, masculine and feminine. Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard partners with Pieter Bourke, formerly of Aussie band Eden, to create this compositional dance of partnership that is classical, ancient, and thoroughly modern. Gerrard's voice is multi-tracked at times, conjuring a cathedral choir and the droning chants of monks. Locrian's third studio album, "The Crystal World", is an epic journey. Inspired by JG Ballard’s 1964 novel of the same name that tells the story of a physician who specialises in leprosy sent to a remote African outpost to discover a jungle that is slowly crystallizing and encroaching upon everything it touches. Terence Hannum, and André Foisy are joined by Steven Hess (On, Pan American, Ural Umbo), whose contribution pushes Locrian deeper into the abyss of despair rendering a sound that is darker, bleaker, and engulfing than any of the group’s previous releases. 'The Holy Mountain' is about the human drive towards enlightenment and is largely influenced by the path of the Aghori Sadhus - a sect of Hindu ascetics who believe everything is sacred and nothing is profane. As part of their spiritual journey, they live alone in cremation grounds, carry a begging bowl made from a human skull, and wear cremation ashes.The extreme nature of their practice and their intense desire for the union with the divine was a major point of inspiration for the album. "First" was released as the first (untitled) Lustmord album on Sterile Records in 1982. The earliest Lustmord recordings show the project's industrial roots with a sound not far from Throbbing Gristle. This record incomparably represents art, ideology, uncompromising consequence and sound tactical proceeding of one of the most interesting, still existing members of the industrial music movement. "First" features John Balance of Coil and additional voices by Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions, and Nigel Dunster. The CD version features longer edits of some of the LP material, along with additional material (compilation tracks) not on the original.

LYDIA LUNCH & PHILIPPE PETIT - 'In Comfort' Picture Disc LP (Comfortzone)
This is the second time in less than 12 months we've found Petit working with an (in)famous female vocalist, trailing last years chilling 7" with Cosey Fanni Tutti, and this outing is no less unnerving. 'Return To Backworld' is a sombre instrumental opener for piano and glitched electronics, before 'Requiescat In Comfort' introduces Lydia's croaked vocal over droning, discordant strings and bleak, glooming drones. The centrepiece is surely the sumptuous ten minute composition 'Black Spring', entering a nether region of slowly waking symphonic strings and 4th world ambience woven around Lydia's dystopian narrative. LAW, the creative vehicle in which Mitchell Altum employs his experimental endeavours, has a niche fusion, in terms of technique, between Noise Ambient and Power Electronics - both of which usually sit on opposite sides of the fence, having it's own set of rules to play out. ‘Our Life…” has an open-ended but "governed" approach, whereby the already established rules of Noise Ambient and Power Electronics are reversed, meshed and re-constructed through the use of a regimentally structured, but eclectic mode of assembly.
