L'ACEPHALE - 'Malefeasance' 2 x LP (Aurora Borealis)
"Malefeasance" is a lengthy and complex affair that further explores L'Acephale's fascinations and strikes headlong into the darkest of musical vistas. The journey this time is perhaps even more academic than the debut "Mord Und Totsclag": further ethnographic audio elements are now present, more spacious passages, a deeper approach. A mix of ambient, warping tones, black metal, chanting, ethereal keyboards, drones, acoustic guitars, noise, field recordings and Tibetan ritual music. The last two tracks best show the nature of Set Sothis' collaborations with Markus Wolff (Waldteufel, Crash Worship), sharing some of his vocal and percussive styles. By no means do L'Acephale make music for the casual listener. In many ways they transcend the preconceived ideas of what may be expected: L'Acephale are most successful at operating beyond the constraints of genre altogether, and 'Malefeasance', with its dark, dreamlike and harrowing atmospheres, is their testament. L'EFFET C'EST MOI - 'Tomber En Heroes' CD (War Office Propaganda)
This interesting music entity rises from Recanati, Italy - the same hometown as Der Feuerkreiner, with whom it seems to share a passion for epic, Neoclassical and Martial compositions. L'Effet C'Est Moi ("the result is me") refers to the concept of Nietzche, identifying between the ruling class and the people. The idea of power and domination, in particular with the splendour of the Roman Empire at its zenith, and also the dark side of its might, that has survived through the ages and formed the totalitarian regimes of the 20th Century. A magnificent world of conquests, armies, battles, emperors and immortality, through excellent orchestral keyboards, epic piano themes and hammering martial percussions. Digipak.
The masterpiece by L’Orchestre Noir from 1999, now remastered, remixed and re-released by Italian label Precordings. L'Orchestre Noir is Tony Wakeford (Sol Invictus), along with Eric Rogers (Gae Bolg), Nathalie Van Keymeulen and Céline Marleix-Bardeau (amongst others), who contribute to this mainly instrumental project - a vehicle for Wakeford's interest in classical and soundtrack composition - with bass, cello, harp, trumpet and violin building a ritual and magical requiem for the fallen of WWI. This album is the Laibachian interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's work The Art of Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge). The majority of the material was created in 2006 and performed the same year on 1st June at Bachfest in Leipzig. Since the work is very much based on mathematical algorithms, Laibach decided to use computer and computer program as the key "instrument", providing a very special electronic interpretation and showing that J.S. Bach with his work could as well be understood as the pioneer of electronic, techno, computer music. Digipak.

LAMA SONAM DORJE & ANTON BATAGOV - 'Daily Practice' CD (Tummo Productions)
This album is an unique collaboration between a composer Anton Batagov and Lama Sonam Dorje, the first Russian Buddhist practitioner who spent 7 years in Himalayas in a strict solitary retreat. After the retreat he received permission and blessing for teaching Dharma in Russia. Lama Sonam Dorje chose eight canonical texts and recorded all of them, along with a dzogchen meditation on a sound 'A,' in the studio. Batagov then composed an instrumental accompaniment, along with two textless instrumental pieces: an introduction, and music for daily meditation. In these compositions he used the rhythmic structure of traditional Tibetan prosody. These rhythmic patterns are usually heard in Tibetan prayers.

LAND:FIRE - 'Physical : Mental : Psychological' CD (Tesco Organisation)
Land:Fire is the more clinical technical project of Henry Emich and Frank Merten, the men behind Herbst9. Land:Fire produce ritual technical ambient music, if this is possible. Sound layers of real brilliance which leave no room for a way back to archaic orchestration. This album is a documentation and a reflection of the historical instant of 5:29:45 a.m. on July 16. 1945 when the first atomic device, "Trinity", detonated. Comes in a nice double foldout DVD digipak with extensive booklet.
Coming back with an all new album after more than 5 years the alter ego of Herbst9 delivers another outstanding soundtrack about radiological warfare and it's debris during the last century. SWT is like a massive energy spike with a surrounding maelstrom of machine noises, rhythms, interferences and electromagnetic waves. The complex arrangement of technical sounds creates a deadly atmosphere of fallout and devastated landscapes with an apocalyptic aura reflected by dissonant harmonies and deep shimmering ambient scapes. LAURENT PERRIER - 'As Far As' CD (Sound On Probation)
Created for Alban Richard’s choreographic show of the same name, “As Far As” is a sound structure built on classical music samples, off beat loops, collages, quotations. The album starts with a long, minimal, repetitive track, reminding one of some of Charlemagne Palestine’s work. Emotion prevails on abstraction, a long heady, cinematic development, a play on volumes and contrasts like hesitating between total anguish and peaceful contemplation. The musical form thus created is the prelude to an almost apocalyptic noise swoop which, in an oddly beautiful manner, finally transforms itself into a collage of orchestrated violins, illusion of infinity meeting a most abrupt end. LAURENT PERRIER - 'Downfall Disperse' 2 x CD (Sound On Probation)
Not to be confused with the champagne of the same name, this is the first solo album in a decade by this French artist (member of Zonk’t / Nox and label manager of Odd Size). ‘Downfall’ is a single track which develops ultra slowly, with very low, organic rumbling and hypnotic bass. The composition seems minimalistic but yet complex, absorbing and disintegrating, cold yet organic. ‘Disperse’ is also a singular track, but is more in the vein of concrete electro-acoustic music. Inspired by the compositions of Steve Reich, loops are copied, layered and moved around, so that the listener is under the permanent impression of growing turbulence and spatial buzzing.

LES FRAGMENTS DE LA NUIT - 'Musique Du Crépuscule’ CD (Equilibrium Music)
Les Fragments de la Nuit is a blossoming band created in 2005 by Michel Villar (piano) and Ombeline Chardes (violin), score composers for film. A vision of night wrapped in mystery: a night haunted by spectral chants, under the spell of epic, poignant strings and sustained by hypnotic piano pulsations. LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE - 'Duality' CD (4AD)
Duality is at once sacred and playful. It is both dark and light, organic and refined, masculine and feminine. Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard partners with Pieter Bourke, formerly of Aussie band Eden, to create this compositional dance of partnership that is classical, ancient, and thoroughly modern. Gerrard's voice is multi-tracked at times, conjuring a cathedral choir and the droning chants of monks. Drums and synth snake from desert to brilliant stormy sky to shaking earth and the bodies that inhabit those spaces. There are lush multiple layers of strings, bagpipe drone, and, quite literally, the laughter of children. The vocals sans "real" words and multicultural instrumentation will be familiar to Dead Can Dance listeners. Yet there is something more exclusive, more womb-like about the music of Bourke and Gerrard; rather than two distinct bodies making music, like mother and in utero child sharing blood and breath, they are mutually dependent.

LOCRIAN - 'Drenched Lands' CD (At War With False Noise / Small Doses)
First full-length studio album from one of the most consistently good bands around today, Chicago's Locrian. "Drenched Lands" is a beautifully thought-out piece of music, from a gentle guitar strum / synth opening which cuts out abruptly just as you're becoming entirely engrossed, only to give way to an epic cavernous drone. The whole thing brings to mind some sort of disused industrial factory or barren post-apocalyptic landscape. Dark tones, noise, keys and the odd well-placed guitar strum combine brilliantly to evoke feeling of desolation, loss, a submission of will, almost tangential in sound to Earth's "Hex" album. Ltd x 1000 copies in a Stumptown 'Arigato' pack (pro-printed, high-quality card envelope) with 4-page insert.
For the past four years, Chicago's Locrian have been recording their unique and haunting brand of experimental music. Their first LP "Greyfield Shrines", was recorded live on WHPK in late 2007. LUASA RAELON - 'The Poison City' CD (Eibon Records)
“Welcome to the poison city. A place where nuclear radiations colour the sky with green clouds, mutating vegetation suffocates the sun and asphyxiating miasms coming from abandoned toxic wastes endanger life...”. LUASA RAELON is one of the most interesting realities of US dark ambient/death industrial scene, combining low-rumbling drones with extemporaneous noise bursts to create a pretty personal and recognisable sound.
A cavernous soundscape composed of spacious drifts and dense, rumbling drones. This is the fourth full-length from Mick Harris under the Lull moniker. "Consisting of a one-hour-long track that unfolds excruciatingly slowly, Continue could be the soundtrack for a '90s version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was equally unnerving for its vast expanses of nothingness. Where Scorn can be the horrific equivalent of a musical Freddy Krueger - getting in your face to tell you how badly he's gonna mess you up - Lull's approach is more subtle and seductive, soothing your nerves before slitting your throat while you sleep" (All Music Guide). Hypnotic journeys into the abyss.

LULL - 'Like A Slow River' CD (Glacial Movements)
After a long period of silence, we welcome the return of one of the most important representatives of the ambient isolationist world: the wonderful UK artist Lull (aka Mick Harris of Scorn, Painkiller, Napalm Death). "Like a slow river" is a work characterised by sharp and minimal atmospheres but also dark, cold and huge such as large bodies of ice which slowly move, carried by an endless river. These five compositions reach the high expectations of Lull's previous works, such as "Cold Summer", "Continue" and the "Murder Ballads" trilogy with Martyn Bates. With no doubt, this is the coldest and darkest work ever composed by this pioneer of industrial-ambient music. You will all be led to the oblivion of your existence....the freezing darkness of these glacial night is going to come down on your bodies and minds... you'll fall in your deepest sleep with the far echo of glacial runnings... the way to eternity is in front of you. Presented in a gorgeous 6-panel digipak. Highly recommended!
Mick Harris ebbs, flows, drifts, and drones through 67 minutes of diverse ambient soundscapes. Reportedly inspired by Mick Harris' deep affection for the soundtrack to the classic David Lynch film Eraserhead, Lull's fifth full-length effort is utterly hypnotic stuff. Comprised of 99 sections digitally edited to form one continuous masterpiece, this makes for transfixing listening.

LUNAR ABYSS DEUS ORGANUM - 'Brusnika' 7" (Drone Records)
Lunar Abyss (ext.) is the child of Evgueny Savenko from St. Petersburg, who creates his own peculiar touch of hypnotic-ethno-ambient industrial music mostly under the name Lunar Abyss Quartet. This very first 7" for L.A.D.O. is a pure aural-shamanistic-journey, where heard and felt are Earth's elements and life itself, such as fire, voice-murmurs, strange animals noises, the wind's force and whistles, the enchanting voice of a woman singing, various softly looped voices are perceptible throughout this sound journey. All these natural sound-ingredients are merged into a deeply etched vibrating rhythm of raw and deepest rumbling analogue sounds. These are the kind of electro-acoustic drone-pieces that breathes spiritual strength and build shamanistic atmospheres full of intensity. 1st edition of 300 copies on red vinyl with insert and unique hand-painted covers.

LUNAR ABYSS DEUS ORGANUM - 'Tuntury' CD (Aquarellist)
The new album of one of the oldest Russian dark-ambient projects. Lunar Abyss Deus Organum is a collection of six sonic pictures of the world of thundra-yoga. Each composition is like a complex multi-dimentional mosaic built of layered sounds of completely different natures: field recordings, samples, synthesizers, singing, tape noises, etc. These layers slowly and relentlessly create a slowly twisting deep sonic spiral, stretching listener's attention out to several directions at once. Hallucinatory ambient of double dosage. Ltd x 500 copies in a digisleeve.

LUPERCI - 'The Holy Mountain' 12" (Monolithic Document)
Luperci is a drone based noise project from Albuquerque, New Mexico. 'The Holy Mountain' is an epic and introspective piece that oscillates between quiet, hypnotic drone and trance inducing, crushing wall of sound. 'The Holy Mountain' is about the human drive towards enlightenment and is largely influenced by the path of the Aghori Sadhus - a sect of Hindu ascetics who believe everything is sacred and nothing is profane. As part of their spiritual journey, they live alone in cremation grounds, carry a begging bowl made from a human skull, and wear cremation ashes. The extreme nature of their practice and their intense desire for the union with the divine was a major point of inspiration for the album. Each sleeve was printed by Luperci's Joseph Angelo and includes an insert. This vinyl-only release is a hand numbered, limited edition of 100 copies only. ACT FAST!

LUSTMORD - 'First - A Document Of Early Acoustic & Tactical Experimentation' CD (Dark Vinyl)
"First" was released as the first (untitled) Lustmord album on Sterile Records in 1982. The earliest Lustmord recordings show the project's industrial roots with a sound not far from Throbbing Gristle. This record incomparably represents art, ideology, uncompromising consequence and sound tactical proceeding of one of the most interesting, still existing members of the industrial music movement. "First" features John Balance of Coil and additional voices by Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions, and Nigel Dunster. The CD version features longer edits of some of the LP material, along with additional material (compilation tracks) not on the original.

LUSTMORD - 'Metavoid' CD (Nextera)
The seventh Lustmord release, and the album which followed "The Place Where The Black Stars Hang", "Metavoid" presents the logical development of that unmistakable Lustmord sound. "The human mind is, and will forever remain, incapable of comprehending the many depths and layers that encompass the universe within which we live. We construct ever-changing theoretical and semiotic perspectives in an attempt to map and decode the unknown, but meaning remains incomprehensible. Through endless corridors of silence and dread, deeper than vacuum, beyond infinity and the realm of measurement, ideographic patterns do not emerge. Metavoid: A soundtrack for the apocalypse." Cavernous Dark Ambient. Like all Lustmord titles, comes with the highest recommendation!
