GHAST / ABANDONER - 'Ghast / Abandoner' CD (At War With False Noise / Choking Hazard Records)
Two tracks each from bands coming at dark heaviness from different ends of the spectrum, but who compliment each other perfectly. The 2 Ghäst tracks are painfully slow, heavy and unrelentingly repetitive funeral dirges of ultradoom. There are some definite sludge overtones going on there but this is definitely for fans of bleak doom/sludge: think Moss / Burning Witch / Corrupted etc. Abandoner is Jay and Ryan from Unearthly Trance but this is a different proposition altogether: post-industrial soundscapes, this is almost like an alternative soundtrack to Eraserhead. Roughly translated as "with blood and whip, we worship the dark", this is the latest collection of atrocities from Gnaw Their Tongues. An eight song investigation into the rites and rituals that emerge from the copper-scented frenzy of the serial killer, the obsessive acts of death worship enacted by those that live on the edge of abyss, the limits of experience sought by black cults. The sound is, as always, immensely heavy, with fractured drums and thunderous tympani skins reverberating within a maelstrom of seething black doom, screeching classical strings, horns, piano, and some of the most vomitous vocals imaginable. However, "Per Flagellum Sanguemque..." is marked by the most frenetic percussive attack that we have heard from Gnaw Their Tongues, with volleys of chaotic drumming, fractured blasts, and maniacally complex patterns. Formed in 2006, Mancunians GNOD started their last European tour by spending a couple of days in the Studio Chaudelande, a small house made of bricks and passion, somewhere in the Normandy countryside in France. They recorded new songs that are now released as a two volume LP series on Tamed Records. “Chaudelande Volume I†contains three songs which demonstrated the multi-faceted universe of GNOD. From the heaviest space-rock parts they've ever recorded to meditative Neofolk mantra influenced moments of calmness and introspection, this new recording marks a new step in GNOD's cosmic procession. Double bass guitar, percussive heavy drums, that meet the sound of bells. Some quiet parts were recorded outdoors between birds and trees, that give a timeless mood to the record. GNOD / A MIDDLE SEX - 'Split' LP (Blackest Rainbow)
Split LP from fellow Manchester weirdos A Middle Sex and Gnod. Gnod follow on from some killer releases over the last couple of years, with Bong, White Hills etc. 'Why Don't You Smile Like The Other Children?' opens with hazy strings and cosmicly far out voices, this slow groove packs a multi-coloured burst of rhythmic psychedelic vibes. On the flip side, A Middle Sex take up duties of doing some equally psychedelic, but in a completely different style. Their side is titled 'Polytheism' and is essentially made up of two tracks, the opener is a short wild spaced out cosmic synth piece, which is swiftly followed by a main 10 minute piece of layered drums and percussion, swirling electronics, distorted chanted vocals. The alliance of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania decisively defeated the Teutonic Knights, with most of their leadership killed or taken prisoner. This battle was one of the largest battles in Medieval Europe and is regarded as the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania. It was surrounded by romantic legends and nationalistic propaganda, becoming a larger symbol of struggle against invaders and a source of national pride. Mastered by Axel Frank (Werkraum).
