DANNY O'REALLY - 'An Evening With Danny O'Really' CD (Solitude Records)
Amsterdam-based noise artist / music producer Danny O'Really's first solo CD, "An Evening with..." Recorded in 2006. This CD features six original cuts of analogue / digital drone guitar manipulations. Opening with a dark industrial-like track the further pieces are more similar to 1960s tape music like from Tod Dockstader or Ilhan Mimaroglu. Russia has had an incredibly interesting and mostly uncredited underground electronic scene for some time. One of its flag bearers has been Ivan Pavlov (CoH). He has collaborated with Throbbing Gristle members Cosey Fanny Tutti and Peter Christopherson (as Soi Song). The LP is culled from 1996 recordings which were made with DAO (Andrej Dao Kolesov). DAO + CoH uses bass, guitars and custom ZX Spectrum and the results are pretty damn awesome. There is a distinct 90‘s flavour and yet it retains a freshness. ‘Propharadeia’ is a really driving track that makes me shake my body from finger to toe. ‘Oka’ is dark and sinister coming through like an Autechre / Muslimgauze hybrid, seething with eastern paranoia. ‘Sung In Sand' continues the eastern flavour with its building intricate yet subtle percussion and swooping synths. Two tracks from early cassette releases. Side A is an alternative version of "Terrain" by Jackman and Sanderson, originally released on the "0 Degrees North" cassette (Aeroplane 1982). With Jackman overdubbing low guttural growls on a steel strung cello and Sanderson programming coffee-percolation on a drum machine, "Terrain" is a lo-fi production that finds its companions in the work of Throbbing Gristle, Hunting Lodge, and the Broken Flag camp of noise. Side B is a solo piece by Jackman, originally released on the 'Adrift' cassette (Snatch Tapes 1981). It is similarly lo-fi with a hypnotic loop of a monochromatic guitar topped with clanging metals and samples from orchestral swells, which have been drained of all colour and replaced with a swampy din. Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. Probably the most depressing Deutsch Nepal album, earlier released as a limited edition by Staalplaat (1999), now with new artwork. Genial project author Der General remarked sometime ago that during the recording of "Erosion" there persisted the feeling that this was the last work of Deutsch Nepal after which nothing will remain... perhaps only death. Utilising the natural acoustics of a series of reverberant spaces she weaves together super saturated soundscapes by recording in one environment, playing back in another, and then re-recording this recording playing back in yet another environment. On 'Cows in Lye' the original sound sources range from loops of field recordings from a trip to India, piano, and the shifting drones of a "Shruti Box" (electronic Tamboura). Dmitriy Tolmatskiy (1970-2009) - a journalist and musician from the city of Saratov, one of the first promoters of alternative intellectual culture and particularly industrial music in post-Soviet Russia. He was the creator of the RWCDAX website, which had certain influence on the mindset of many modern personalities of Russian post-industrial art. The compositions included on "Selected Funbient Works 1-4" were recorded by the Dmitriy in the first half of 00s. Initially it was planned to release four parts of "Funbient" on four separate CDs. However later Dmitriy selected the best for a double album release. The album vividly displays the complex music world of DMT, which, like everything innovative, exists on the crossing of several musical styles and directions: from dark-ambient and industrial noise sketches to technoid rhythms and pure sonic experiments. While stumbling around a dark and dusty used bookstore in Manhattan's Lower East Side, Carlos Boll stumbled across a book of poetry by John Clare. Not being familiar with his work prior to this encounter he was taken aback by the beauty of Clare�s words. While maintaining a rather personal and reflective nature, the poems invoke a walk though the forest on a wonderful spring day. Being struck by such inspiration Carlos knew at once he should set some of his favourite pieces to music. Enhanced by the dulcid tones of vocalist Isabella Piombo, Carlos purposefully kept the music in the realm of traditional British folk, in homage to Clare's homeland, although modern influences certainly crept in during the recording sessions.
