C.M. VON HAUSSWOLFF - 'Perhaps / Arrive' 2 x CD (Auf Abwegen)
This 2CD set includes some of the most unusual sounds you will have heard from Carl Michael von Hausswolff. He was chosen by the 1997 Istanbul Biennal to create a sound installation for Atatürk Airport. His classic sound (low frequency rumblings, monotonous oscillations and hissy non-narrative sequences) was deemed too confusing for the commutors. It was feared that his sound installation might be mistaken for an alarm and could cause serious panic at the airport. Hence the original soundtrack for “Perhaps/ /Arrive” was rejected. This music can now be heard for the first time on disc 1. Von Hausswolff’s response to the artistic restrictions was to produce the four tracks you hear on the second disc. These only make use of the very basic pre-set sounds included in the Yamaha QY22 and show a new side to the von Hausswolff sound. Very simple, post-nuclear lounge music. These four tracks were used in the context of the Biennal exhibition. Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak, with artwork by Akifumi Nakajima (Aube).

CAGES - 'Folding Space' CD (Cold Spring CSR121CD)
The shaking notes that make up "Folding Space" were recorded by two people holed up in their whole respective imaginations of visions of loops, layers and pleading lyrics. They sought sounds from the same dreams that give fools belief and colourfully punctuate the nights of the sanest. There are elements of dreamy ether and discomfort rather than the easy choruses and catchphrases of the most collected and consumed art form. The visions backing this elaborate music were recorded and are performed for a primary reason: to exist freely. An hour of music set in studios buried by blizzards of the American Great Lakes region. Artwork with gold print.
CAITHNESS - 'Apostasy And The Sorrowful Child' CD (Kaosthetik Konspiration)
This side-project of Hylgaryss (Dark Sanctuary) aims, though a selected and mechanical development, an ambient diagram and religious marked. Caithness installs a monastic climate, dreamlike coupled to some introspective blackness and exposing a decorum of reclusion. Amalgams of bells, songs of monks and ambient tableaux. A post-apocalyptic detailed sound cinema. This dark-ambient is the sound of an alternative remaining to find between vacuum and belief. Ethereal compositions conductive to quiet contemplation and so emotional, in a similar way to the the best of Raison d Être. Ltd x 1000 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve with booklet.

CARVED IMAGE OF EMPTINESS / ZINC ROOM - 'Lie, Illusions, Mystifications / Zinc 99,99' CD (Evil Dead Productions / Imp. Hate Fac.)
This CD is in fact 2 full-length albums of two Russian industrial projects, both coming from Ekaterinburg, Ural region. Carved Image Of Emptiness aren't easily categorised - energetic industrial, sombre and serious neoclassical, pompous Martial Industrial and Industrial atmospheres. Zinc Room is quite another matter! Proper old school noise with analogue distortion, field recordings and samples. The recordings are mostly not aggressive, but somehow sadly pensive - like an abandoned factory standing in a field and overgrown by weeds long ago. However the spirits of industrialisation still live there and sometimes continue their mechanical activity.

CHANDEEN - 'Teenage Poetry' CD (Kalinkaland)
Chandeen returns with another timeless jewel. As one of the originators of the genre that came to be known as "Heavenly Voices," Harald Löwy remains as chief song-writer and instrumentalist, with a new vocalist for this incarnation of Chandeen: Julia Beyer who lends a more fragile, autumn character to the songs. These songs sound more inspired, more intimate and yes, in some respects more mature and developed then past releases. Julia Beyer's sad, but strong voice stands in sympathetic contrast and floats in concurrent harmony with Löwy's tearfully beautiful songs.

US Neofolk. "When the concept for this album was in its seminal stages, we came to the realization that there were several songs from Changes' earlier years which had yet to be released in any form. Some had been recorded on early "demo" tapes while others had not. Thus, it was decided that instead of using previously recorded tracks, we would return to the studio to create new renditions of these songs. Additionally, the arrangements, bridges, and harmonies were enhanced to better reflect our current style. Also included in this album are three new songs... Essentially, the album bridges the years from Changes' inception to its present incarnation." White vinyl in an embossed and gold-foiled heavy gatefold cover. Ltd edition of 700 numbered copies! CHANGES - 'Lament' CD (Hau Ruck!)
From Changes' inception, R. N. Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk have woven bardic tales of gallantry, chivalry and of larger-than-life legendary and mythical heroes. They've sung of new love, love unrequited and love lost. They've written songs foretelling a dark apocalyptic future, which later came to pass while currently prophesying a society in the seminal stages of an even darker fate. With their new album, "Lament", they turn their gaze inward, to their own personal apocalypses, stemming from their long marriages ending in dismal dissolution. Only by being able to immerse themselves in their art and create works expressing these sorrows would they be able to maintain their sanity. "Lament" reaches out to all who've had their lives disrupted by modern societal partners going through mid-life crises, becoming antagonistic strangers to their families overnight. Also included are new versions of three of Changes' earlier works; "The Saddest Thing", "Sweet Eve" and "Memorabilia". 13 tracks of Folk Noir. Guest: Axel Frank (Werkraum). CHANGES - 'Legends' MCD (Taproot Productions)
"Legends" features some of the first material recorded by Changes in their new incarnation, and is a folk rock / folk noir rendition of an Ezra Pound poem set to music. "Changes have returned to the studio after more than two decades and added the outstanding five sections to their enduring Legends masterpiece. Coupled with the Vikingesque tales of Thor and Odin, these additional excursions into the realms of superhuman heroics concern the brave deeds of notable characters such as Galahad, El Cid, Ulysses, Lancelot, Aeneas, Prince Igor, Arthur and Merlin; as well as a whole host of romantic beauties such as Venus, Penelope, Guinevere, Elvira and Sol.... Relying on the engineering skills of Robert Ferbrache, Tesluk's 12-string guitar strums and picks its way amid Taylor's smooth vocals and fine delivery. The various historical epochs represent a continuous whole but are suitably broken into six musical areas." (Synthesis)

Here for the first time are the complete recordings that were made on 11th September 1967 in a rehearsal studio, which went onto be used as demos to try to secure a recording deal, which never happened. CHRIS CONNELLY AND THE BELLS - 'Blonde Exodus / The Ultimate Seaside Companion' 2 x CD (Dream Catcher)
"Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. But this album makes a case for him as a solo artist worth watching". (AMG)

One of their heaviest conceptions to date, MCIAA's piece is built on electric guitars' strings moaning onto walls of space drones and electronics like ectoplasmic presences emerging from the brilliance of the Void. CIRCLE - 'Forest' CD (Ektro Records)
Finnish version of the 2004 album. "It's incredible how Circle always manage to maintain their trademark sound - repetitive, hypnotic post-prog-rock grooves - even as they produce new albums with such distinct, different identities. Forest, is another great, unique Circle effort. This time around, they've gone semi-acoustic, kinda folky. Also spooky and sinisterly-synthed... This a Forest of nightmares, with whispering and groaning in the trees... Most of the time Forest is all-instrumental, spacious, suspenseful, grooved-out, darkness. The final, longest track dabbles in ambient, experimental witch-project drone before those Circle rhythms return and Mika moans his last. So good" (Aquarius).

The mysterious acronym "NWOFHM" was revealed to the world for the first time in 2005 when this mysterious sequence of letters dominated the centerfold of the booklet of Tulikoira, a studio album by prolific Finnish krautrock band Circle. It is likely that the meaning of NWOFHM was initially nonsensical to most of Circle's listeners, but some of them may have been able to dig up the phrase "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" from the nethermost recesses of their helmets, and to deduct that this variation probably referred to a localised Finnish version of this 80's phenomenon - only over twenty years too late. 2009 edition with slipcase.
CIRCULAR - 'Shaping The Unknown' CD (Loki Foundation)

CISFINITUM - 'Coniunctio' 2 x CD (Ewers Tonkunst)

The material has been remastered and recompiled to become the new entity called "Coniunctio." Going through the desperate landscapes of today's dying spiritless world, the listener comes into the sacred and surreal inner space of an immaterial land full of light, mysticism and universal melancholy. One of the most beautiful and heartfelt records in the drone ambient style, reminding of the best and saddest Maeror Tri. Second edition in gatefold digisleeve with new artwork.
The fourth volume in the "Substantia Innominata" series comes from one of the best projects of the Russian experimental-atmospheric / drone / post-industrial-scene, headed by Evgueny Voronovsky from Moscow. CLOAMA - 'In The State Of Unbelief' 7" (Cipher Productions)
Two new pieces from Cloama at its most vehement. A savage exposition of raw power electronics, which has never been quite so overt in Cloama’s sound until this project. Notwithstanding the clear ‘80s PE influences, the production and composition are distinct, discreet layers, with the usual attention to detail giving this work flair. CLOAMA - 'Revisionist Knowledge' CD (Freak Animal)

COELACANTH & KEITH EVANS - 'Wrack Light In Copper Ruin' CD & DVD (Seal Pool)
Jim Haynes & Loren Chasse collaborate with Keith Evans to create Coelacanth's 4th and most complex record. Culled from two performances, 'Wrack Light in Copper Ruin' meditates on the space of performance, the tactile nature of the creation of sound, and its ephemeral, elusive and entirely subjective character. The visuals of Keith Evans further the exploration with their organic, nocturnal, energy. More delicate than Coelacanth's previous recordings, 'Wrack Light' inhabits a space where artists such as Jonathan Coleclough, Andrew Chalk, Mirror, and MNortham can be found, yet it maintains the mysterious, oceanic nature its name implies. COFFINS - 'Buried Death' CD (20 Buck Spin)
Tokyo’s Coffins are firmly established as the underground’s leading purveyors of neanderthal paced doomed death metal. Previous releases introduced Coffins’ black tar dirge to an audience eager for slowppressive maniac riffs and songs dragged forth like the arms of a lumbering ape. Derivative and true rather then progressive and new, with an effectiveness unmatched in today’s underground. Immediately battering the listener with the opening sledgehammer ‘Under The Stench’ the album crawls ever forward through the catchiest Coffins tracks ever. The patented brick heavy guitar tone remains and the band has added some additional solos and high vocal screams, hinted at on 2006’s “The Other Side…” LP. Rather than toy with forced “evolution” Coffins has instead sharpened and honed its devolved sound further in its primitive singlemindedness. Packaged in a Stoughton printed heavyweight gatefold with a printed inner sleeve.
COFFINS / OTESANEK - 'Coffins / Otesanek' CD (Parasitic Records)
Reissue of the LP split by this pair, releases in early 2007. This is a massive, crushing Doom Metal clash between Japanese act Coffins and formidable Philadephians Otesanek (whose track was recorded by Steve Roach). Ultra-sludge, heavy-duty, guitar mangling suffocation, tipped as one of the best in the genre for 2007. Akin to Burning Witch or Grief.

COLD FUSION - 'Occupatria' CD (Steinklang)
The oppressive atmosphere of an occupied country; illusory freedom - no freedom. “Occupatria” is musical journey on the thin line between the urge of freedom and the lack of its realisation. 45 minutes of critically acclaimed music, comparable to A Challenge Of Honour, Les Joyaux de la Princesse. COLD FUSION - 'Report' CD (War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden)
Re-issue of Cold Fusion's second full-length work. This concept album contains 46 minutes of military ambient soundscapes and rhythms - so characteristic of Cold Fusion. The first edition was published by War Office Propaganda 2005 (Ltd 200). Now re-issued onto CD and presented in a digipak with new artwork by Michal Karcz.
COLD FUSION - 'Simmetria' CD (War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden)
Symmetry perceived as some kind of balance and harmony. Symmetry between surrounding world and its "mirror reflection", which sticks in our minds. Symmetry of left and right side, day and night, birth and death. Symmetry of buildings, objects, bodies. The fifth album from Cold Fusion reflects this theme with dynamic, marching atmospheres on one side, and melancholy and reverie on the other. A lack of symmetry or rather its confirmation? 11 tracks overall, presented in a nice digipak.

With McKenzie being in Iceland and Potter being in Preston, a tête-à-tête was not easy. Andrew McKenzie mailed Potter the original source material for the concert, which he happily reworked into 'A Pressed On Sandwich', creating a dark, detailed soundworld that shows off both musicians' approach to drone atmospherics. COLLAPSAR - 'Beyond The Event Horizon' CD (Malignant Records)
Malignant presents another rising star within the dark ambient scene, this time in the form of French act Collapsar. With their debut CD, Collapsar transports the listener on an epic journey deep into the cosmos, forging a path across a vast, inky void, and steering a course around a roiling galactic core of hyper-dense stars and black holes. The sound is epic, expansive, and most of all, HEAVY. There is beauty and tranquility within these realms, but there is no light - just massive, pulsating textures coalescing into shimmering drones, rippling sound waves, and billowing, multi-dimensional layers of powerful dark energy. “Beyond the Event Horizon” is without question, dark ambient in its purest form and one of the more genre defining releases of the last several years. COLUMN ONE - 'World Transmission 3' LP (State Art)
'World Transmission 3' was recorded over a period of two days in 1994 at a church in Etzin, Germany. All instruments were played live and recorded with two microphones. The position of these mics made it possible to document not only the overall sound, but also movements within the room. A third mic was connected to effects and a record player, amp, and speakers. The results is a series of echoed, tonal vibrations and drones, with rising dynamics, and shuffling whispered sounds. All instruments used were objects or tools carrying a religious, mystical, or spiritual meaning. 45 minutes of music.

COMATOSE VIGIL - 'Not A Gleam Of Hope' CD (Marche Funebre Productions)
"...these Russians play doom at a snail's pace. Even if it was played at twice the speed, it would still be agonizingly slow. The lethargic riffs generate a heavy and oppressive atmosphere enhanced by minimal drumming and keyboards. The vocals are initially ineffectively distorted, but these are quickly discarded in favour of a more efficient natural grunt. It need not be said, but just in case there is any doubt: these are lengthy compositions, tending towards the double digit mark. The band is not too dissimilar to funeral doomsters Tyranny, but do possess their own distinctive flavour... Recommended for all who like their doom to proceed at approximately the same speed as a glacier -- only less welcoming and with less warmth" (Chronicles Of Chaos). Finished with a nice slipcase.

Lawrence - an enigmatic outsider who lived a tortured odyssey of physical and spiritual extremes in search of his own personal faith. The name of the CD derives from his book called "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom." The powerful sounds and strong vocals give a good impression on how torturing the life of Lawrence must have been. CONTEMPLATRON - 'Antarabhava / Six Realms' CD (Wrotycz)
Dark ambient inspired by "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" and based upon the Buddhist tradition. This is a kind of a soundtrack for the religious rituals. The inspiration for the first part of the album was derived from the "Book", read to the dying person, describing the process of dying the posthumous states of mind. The second part describes the six realms which, according to the Buddhist tradition, symbolise six destructive emotions: ignorance, hatred, enslaving desire, jealousy, pride and greed. Each track is dedicated to the different emotion. Comes in a cardboard sleeve and is limited to 500 copies.
Second release from this Polish dark ambient act. The DELOG experience is extraordinary, marvellous, even within the esoteric context of Tibetan Buddhism. The Tibetan word DELOG refers to one who has crossed the threshold of death and returned to tell about it. The person who is recognised as DELOG lays without any sign of breath, pulse or body warmth for many days. During that his or her mind journeys to other realms of experience: the pure display of enlightened mind as well as existence within samsaric delusion and ignorance. CONURE - 'Stream' CD (Edgetone Records)
It is difficult for a listener to step away from the narrative concept behind Conure's previous CD ("The Generation of Our Grandfathers") and just immerse oneself in the sounds. With his new work, Mark Wilson utilises non-musical themes in a different manner in order to allow that immersion. Themes run throughout the five tracks of "Stream", but this time the themes were used primarily as building blocks rather than as the focus of the CD. His new creation is rawer than previous works, while still retaining their compositional strengths. The music, constructed primarily from field recordings and other mic'ed sound processed through effects pedals, is probably the closest that Conure has come to reproducing the sound of his live performances in the studio environment. CORRUPTED - 'Paso Inferior' CD (Nostalgia Blackrain)
"Japanese underground icons Corrupted create droning, sludgy, painfully slow death / doom metal and ambient music along the same lines as bands like Earth, Boris, and Sunn O))). These include holding anything remotely resembling rock stardom in utter contempt, mysteriously writing all of their lyrics in Spanish, and refusing to even take promo shots, so that the only known images of the group are those snapped by fans at their concerts" (All Music Guide). The disaster left the city of Prypiat abandoned. To this day the city remains an exclusion zone. The recordings on this album were made to create a soundtrack to the whole era. 10 tracks of dark ambient with sampled voices from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster era, coupled with distorted signals and electronics. "The humming of analogue synths, the use of reverb, the mumbling of buried voices, the cold and desolate nature of this music. First time on CD for both these bands: Culver is the awe-inspiring drone / noise project of Lee Stokoe (Marzuraan, Skullflower). On this CD he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing, bassy drone, purveying a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone. Seppuku give two tracks in very different styles... the first is an unbearably heavy doom piece, giving way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste... heavy duty! The second track sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. Unpleasant. Ltd x 500 copies.

CYCLOTIMIA - 'Algorithms' CD (War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden)
Reissue of Cyclotimia's 2005 album (Irond). Moscow duo Cyclotimia is one of the best recognised, well-known Russian projects in the electronic scene today. On "Algorithms" album Cyclotimia presents apocalyptic version of electronic music, dark ambient sounds supported by bouncing electronic rhythms, religious samples and different effects, all blended in that way which makes this album very intriguing. Cyclotimia's trademark sound proceeds from using a mix of the modern synthesis technologies and cult vintage analogue / Soviet machines. For all who listen into Ulver, Holon or Forma Tadre. Digipak.
This 6-track release continues in the same vein as "Wasteland", but is less rhythmic and more deep and meditative, being maybe the most dark and melancholic Cyclotimia release to date. Analogue electronic layers submerge listener to an atmosphere of uneasy hallucinatory reverie. Subtle clear sound and sad melodies unite to create the unique mix of cold psychedelia and soulful grief. Reminds of Controlled Bleeding, Raison D'etre and Reutoff in places. Ltd x 300 copies in a silver on black print deluxe card sleeve.

CYCLOTIMIA - 'Music For Stockmarkets' CD (Zhelezobeton)
Cyclotimia has chosen the creation of a soundtrack to "globalisation" and life of the "consumer society" as their concept. The radically experimental 64-minute album includes 32 tracks divided into three conceptual parts: "Wallstreet Requiem", "Trivial Pleasures" and "Financial Glossary". The music itself is nothing like their previous recordings. Minimalism, academic sterility, surgical accuracy and meditative ataraxy prevail on "Music for Stockmarkets". The sound of the album is chrystal-clear and warm at the same time. "Vintage" lovers have a wonderful chance to listen to the masterpieces of Soviet music production in pure sound, unprocessed by effects. Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak.
