C.M. VON HAUSSWOLFF - 'Perhaps / Arrive' 2 x CD (Auf Abwegen)
This 2CD set includes some of the most unusual sounds you will have heard from Carl Michael von Hausswolff. He was chosen by the 1997 Istanbul Biennal to create a sound installation for Atatürk Airport. His classic sound (low frequency rumblings, monotonous oscillations and hissy non-narrative sequences) was deemed too confusing for the commutors. It was feared that his sound installation might be mistaken for an alarm and could cause serious panic at the airport. Hence the original soundtrack for “Perhaps/ /Arrive” was rejected. This music can now be heard for the first time on disc 1. Von Hausswolff’s response to the artistic restrictions was to produce the four tracks you hear on the second disc. These only make use of the very basic pre-set sounds included in the Yamaha QY22 and show a new side to the von Hausswolff sound. Very simple, post-nuclear lounge music. CARSTEN VOLLMER - 'Arbeit Nummer 7' 7" (Cat Killer)
Released on Vollmer’s own label, this is a release with very little information and minimal artwork. Total relentless lo-fi noise over two tracks. Incomprehensible, dense and murderous screeching amongst thick layers of electronics and violence make this quite a difficult and claustrophobic release! A small note: both sides have the same track name, but are in fact different.
Split release on 180g vinyl by these audio-extremists from Germany. Carsten Vollmer delivers one huge 14-minute opus called "Arbeit Nummer 18 - Urban Predator". Distorted noise and screaming feedback, generated with self built instruments. On the other side Gehirn.Implosion offers two tracks. "Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. The mysterious acronym "NWOFHM" was revealed to the world for the first time in 2005 when this mysterious sequence of letters dominated the centerfold of the booklet of Tulikoira, a studio album by prolific Finnish krautrock band Circle. It is likely that the meaning of NWOFHM was initially nonsensical to most of Circle's listeners, but some of them may have been able to dig up the phrase "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" from the nethermost recesses of their helmets, and to deduct that this variation probably referred to a localised Finnish version of this 80's phenomenon - only over twenty years too late. 2009 edition with slipcase.

Dark Ambient masters Cisfinitum and The [Law-Rah] Collective dedicated this split and common work to one of the very first synthesizers in the world, the ANS. The ANS, created by Russian engineer E. Murzin, is an incredible response to the synesthesia theories (the letters ANS stand for Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin who linked tones to colours). The ANS (only one copy exists and is kept in Moscow) generates special frequencies from drawings and can also create a visible image of a sound frequency. Artists such as Coil, Edward Artemiev (for Tarkovsky's "Solaris" soundtrack) and Alfred Schnittke used the ANS in their compositions. The first cut 'At The National Border' is stunning with it's electronic bleeps, bells and strings which make way for a breathtaking vocal surrounded by a chorus of vocal drones. I can imagine this soundtracking an epic Samurai movie. Just when you think things couldn't any better the track switches gear and I'm left in goosebump city. 'Wavelength To Amplify' has Hiroshi bring the noise with pounding drums, manipulated samples and acidic squiggles perhaps recalling bits of Meat Beat Manifesto. 'Acid Rain 2' on the B-side has some brain melting synthesizer sounds give way to a piano motif, congas, melancholy strings and sampled dialogue then a big thumping slow and heavy kick drum drops by. Highly original audio which is increasingly rare these days. Baby pink vinyl in a PVC archive sleeve.

CONURE - 'Stream' CD (Edgetone Records)
It is difficult for a listener to step away from the narrative concept behind Conure's previous CD ("The Generation of Our Grandfathers") and just immerse oneself in the sounds. With his new work, Mark Wilson utilises non-musical themes in a different manner in order to allow that immersion. Themes run throughout the five tracks of "Stream", but this time the themes were used primarily as building blocks rather than as the focus of the CD. His new creation is rawer than previous works, while still retaining their compositional strengths. The music, constructed primarily from field recordings and other mic'ed sound processed through effects pedals, is probably the closest that Conure has come to reproducing the sound of his live performances in the studio environment. CONURE - 'Strings, Locations' CD (Edgetone Records)
With "Strings, Locations", Conure begins intimate, then discreetly leaves us stranded in a vast labyrinth. Sharp, specific washes of analogue electronic tones give the listener an audio architecture within which to navigate. The twisting sounds of ringing tones, discordant guitar accents and feedback lumber through this architectural terrain, sometimes like a monster without direction and other times like delicate intentional creatures holding ground in the middle of a vortex. Whatever this beast is, we are given an audio map of a terrain for which there is no way out. An exciting combination of harsh sounds mixed with delicate an intentional placement. One cannot exit this piece without feeling that they were witness to some narrative only half understood. It is the sound of a city’s architecture evolving from a past to a future as an abstract mystery is made audible.
It’s hardly news to any connoisseur of Industrial music that Coph Nia like to cover songs. So far they’ve transformed The Leather Nun’s punk anthem “Prime Mover” into a brooding, industrial soundscape, and made songs by artists as diverse as Front 242, Bauhaus, Arthur Brown and The Rolling Stones their own. Coph Nia have decided to take the demon by the horns, and tried to exorcise the Cover Demon before it consumes them. Crisis came into existence in the late '70s amidst the British hardcore punk movement. They took the same energy that came from the youthful, raw anger of the Oi! movement, but with restrained lyrical phrasing and strict rhythms. Members include Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford who would later expand upon some of the Crisis material for their Neofolk group DEATH IN JUNE. Wakeford later went on to form SOL INVICTUS, whilst Luke Rendall and Lester Jones would later find involvement in Theatre Of Hate and Sex Gang Children, respectively. This is Crisis' entire remastered discography from 1978-1980, complete with a 12 page booklet featuring exclusive photos from Douglas P.'s private archives.

Re-release for the first time on vinyl, since it's original release in may 1980 - the one and only 7 track album from seminal radical and political punk / post punk band Crisis. 'Hymns Of Faith' was Crisis at their more reserved. The guitar was more innovative than on the punk anthems on their earlier singles, but the lyrics were just as politically bitter. Lyrically the album deals with subjects such as TV, violence, totalitarian Russia and European terrorist organisations. This was their last effort, as it had all begun to fall apart by this time for Crisis, with the band members going in different directions. Douglas P. went on to form Death In June with Tony Wakeford (Sol Invictus), and Luke Rendall went on to form Theatre Of Hate. 30 years since its release 'Hymns Of Faith' still sounds vital and honest. First time on CD for both these bands: Culver is the awe-inspiring drone / noise project of Lee Stokoe (Marzuraan, Skullflower). Here he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing, bassy drone, purveying a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone. Seppuku give two tracks in very different styles... the first is an unbearably heavy doom piece, giving way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste... heavy duty! The second track sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. An album inspired by the activity of the American aerospace company Space Services Inc. which among other things dispatches human ashes in space. For more than 30 years Space Services Inc. has been a leader company in the sphere of private space missions of scientific and educational character. By agreement with Space Services Inc. a copy of "Celestis" CD will be launched in space on board of the rocket with ashes of 179 people from different countries and will be the official soundtrack for the memorial "Legacy" flight. Musically "Celestis" fundamentally differs from their previous works - real old-school atmospheres using vintage devices. As the title suggests, the new work by the Russian masters of electronic soundscapes represents a score to an imaginary sci-fi movie. The musicians are admirers of old-school Sci-Fi / Cyberpunk genres and for a long time they have felt a desire to make some music inspired by soundtracks of sci-fi blockbusters from 1970-80s... Spaceship battles, alien colonies, teleportation and mysterious droid ceremonies are only part of the images created by this music. The album contains both dynamic rhythmic "hits" and disturbing space ambient as well as avant-garde neoclassical pieces. Ltd x 500 copies.
"Styx" is the most mainstream work in the Cyclotimia discography. The music is free of their usual experimental and academic explorations; here the emphasis is made on the rhythms. Eleven compositions depict the sickly technogenic reality of the planet wrapped by networks of global capital, media glamour and ideological obsessions. In ancient Greek mythology the Styx was the embodiment of primeval dread and gloom, from which the first living creatures emerged. This was a personification of the underworld river whose pestilent currents seclude life from death. Similarly to this mythic river, currents of credits, percent, funds, financial quotations, capital issues, barrels of oil and advertising spaces flow on the Cyclotimia album to the accompaniment of hard, sterile and atmospheric electronic music. "TimeBank" is a collection of exclusive unreleased compositions recorded by Cyclotimia from 2003-2007. A post-industrial "dish" containing cyber jazz and IDM, neoclassical and trademark technological ambient, old-school electronics and atmospheric new age, experimental and much more. Despite the seeming stylistic incompatibility the band has succeeded in creating an album with a spectacular plot similar to a good Hollywood thriller. A special jewel on the album is the track 'Nocturne' combining aerial melodies and uneasy sonic cinematography. Also worth mentioning is the "live" 10-minute prog-industrial suite "Economic Meditation", imbued with psychedelic drama. Ltd x 500 copies.
