C.M. VON HAUSSWOLFF - 'Operations Of Spirit Communication' LP (Die Stadt)
Limited repress of the classic album from 2000, which is partly based on (and also dedicated to) the work of Friedrich Jurgenson, who believed he could channel the voices of the dead onto magnetic tape or shortwave radio. The work was originally presented as a sound installation that aspired to achieve communication with other worlds utilising EVP (the installation picks up electrical and radio transmissions: microphones record the noise of electricity, sine wave tones are received, and cameras capture electric behaviour). 50 minutes of seamless dark drone / buzz, gradually getting louder and enveloping the room, even at a low volume. Presented in a stunning, heavy-weight, matt gatefold sleeve. Opaque vinyl, ltd x 300 copies.

C.M. VON HAUSSWOLFF - 'Perhaps / Arrive' 2 x CD (Auf Abwegen)
This 2CD set includes some of the most unusual sounds you will have heard from Carl Michael von Hausswolff. He was chosen by the 1997 Istanbul Biennal to create a sound installation for Atatürk Airport. His classic sound (low frequency rumblings, monotonous oscillations and hissy non-narrative sequences) was deemed too confusing for the commutors. It was feared that his sound installation might be mistaken for an alarm and could cause serious panic at the airport. Hence the original soundtrack for “Perhaps/ /Arrive” was rejected. This music can now be heard for the first time on disc 1. Von Hausswolff’s response to the artistic restrictions was to produce the four tracks you hear on the second disc. These only make use of the very basic pre-set sounds included in the Yamaha QY22 and show a new side to the von Hausswolff sound. Very simple, post-nuclear lounge music. These four tracks were used in the context of the Biennal exhibition. Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak, with artwork by Akifumi Nakajima (Aube).

CADAVER YELLETH AT AMBER TOWER - 'Code: Algeria' CD (Res Adversae)
Utterly cynical Power Electronics by Al-La-Sht-Orr (Ithdabquth Aliphoth). "...another strange drone / electronics project that infests the listener with creeped out frequencies and sound collage... features two tracks that use recordings of intercepted conversations between Russian ground control and air force pilots from Algerian airspace in 2005, layering these recordings with sheets of electronic feedback and drone. Al-La-Sht-Orr creates a grim electronic dronescape that takes on an almost cinematic tension as we listen to these Russian voices cloaked in white noise hiss going back and forth over grating electronic beeps and noises, harrowing high-end drones, growling organ-like clusters of notes, and piercing feedback. The mix of radio transmissions and grim industrial shrieking forms a strange, alien shortwave similar to some of Throbbing Gristle's ominous works." (Crucial Blast) Ltd x 283 copies. Russian import.

CARSTEN VOLLMER - 'Arbeit Nummer 7' 7" (Cat Killer)
Released on Vollmer’s own label, this is a release with very little information and minimal artwork. Total relentless lo-fi noise over two tracks. Incomprehensible, dense and murderous screeching amongst thick layers of electronics and violence make this quite a difficult and claustrophobic release! CARVED IMAGE OF EMPTINESS / ZINC ROOM - 'Lie, Illusions, Mystifications / Zinc 99,99' CD (Evil Dead Productions / Imp. Hate Fac.)
This CD is in fact 2 full-length albums of two Russian industrial projects, both coming from Ekaterinburg, Ural region. Carved Image Of Emptiness aren't easily categorised - energetic industrial, sombre and serious neoclassical, pompous Martial Industrial and Industrial atmospheres. Zinc Room is quite another matter! Proper old school noise with analogue distortion, field recordings and samples. The recordings are mostly not aggressive, but somehow sadly pensive - like an abandoned factory standing in a field and overgrown by weeds long ago. However the spirits of industrialisation still live there and sometimes continue their mechanical activity.

Cath & Phil's music beautifully blends the hard edged traditions of primitive Americana and English folk, using guitar, banjo, fiddle and more, all topped with their searing vocals and sublime harmonies. Their songs speak of grit, blood and guts, tenderness, love and death. Cath & Phil believe in folk retaining its original storytelling function, passing on tales through the centuries. All the songs on the album are adaptations of songs they've unearthed or have been passed onto them through family members, musical collaborators and their own love of the original information highway; folk music. CAUL - 'Hidden' CD (Eibon Records)
Caul's 5th and possibly darkest album. A massive comeback to bleak, dense and hyper-obscure Dark Ambient: soundscapes for a never ending journey, magically crafted by a musician whose talent is immense. One single track, one hour. Digifile.
Chandeen returns with another timeless jewel. As one of the originators of the genre that came to be known as "Heavenly Voices," Harald Löwy remains as chief song-writer and instrumentalist, with a new vocalist for this incarnation of Chandeen: Julia Beyer who lends a more fragile, autumn character to the songs. These songs sound more inspired, more intimate and yes, in some respects more mature and developed then past releases. Julia Beyer's sad, but strong voice stands in sympathetic contrast and floats in concurrent harmony with Löwy's tearfully beautiful songs.

CHANGES - 'A Ripple In Time' LP (White Label)
US Neofolk. "When the concept for this album was in its seminal stages, we came to the realization that there were several songs from Changes' earlier years which had yet to be released in any form. Some had been recorded on early "demo" tapes while others had not. Thus, it was decided that instead of using previously recorded tracks, we would return to the studio to create new renditions of these songs. Additionally, the arrangements, bridges, and harmonies were enhanced to better reflect our current style. Also included in this album are three new songs... Essentially, the album bridges the years from Changes' inception to its present incarnation." White vinyl in an embossed and gold-foiled heavy gatefold cover. Ltd edition of 700 numbered copies! CHANGES - 'Legends' MCD (Taproot Productions)
"Legends" features some of the first material recorded by Changes in their new incarnation, and is a folk rock / folk noir rendition of an Ezra Pound poem set to music. "Changes have returned to the studio after more than two decades and added the outstanding five sections to their enduring Legends masterpiece. Coupled with the Vikingesque tales of Thor and Odin, these additional excursions into the realms of superhuman heroics concern the brave deeds of notable characters such as Galahad, El Cid, Ulysses, Lancelot, Aeneas, Prince Igor, Arthur and Merlin; as well as a whole host of romantic beauties such as Venus, Penelope, Guinevere, Elvira and Sol.... Relying on the engineering skills of Robert Ferbrache, Tesluk's 12-string guitar strums and picks its way amid Taylor's smooth vocals and fine delivery. The various historical epochs represent a continuous whole but are suitably broken into six musical areas." (Synthesis)

CHARLES MANSON - 'The Summer Of Hate - The '67 Sessions' CD (Arte Lupo)

Here for the first time are the complete recordings that were made on 11th September 1967 in a rehearsal studio, which went onto be used as demos to try to secure a recording deal, which never happened. CHRIS CONNELLY AND THE BELLS - 'Blonde Exodus / The Ultimate Seaside Companion' 2 x CD (Dream Catcher)
"Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. But this album makes a case for him as a solo artist worth watching". (AMG)

CIRCLE - 'Forest' CD (Ektro Records)
Finnish version of the 2004 album. "It's incredible how Circle always manage to maintain their trademark sound - repetitive, hypnotic post-prog-rock grooves - even as they produce new albums with such distinct, different identities. Forest, is another great, unique Circle effort. This time around, they've gone semi-acoustic, kinda folky. Also spooky and sinisterly-synthed... This a Forest of nightmares, with whispering and groaning in the trees... Most of the time Forest is all-instrumental, spacious, suspenseful, grooved-out, darkness. CIRCULAR - 'Shaping The Unknown' CD (Loki Foundation)
This debut defines an opulent style of meditative ambient music and celebrates the pure sound engines of perfect analogue synthesizer music. These aural paintings uncover sacred landscapes of drifting loops and the brilliant use of guitars to set up an unearthly visionary wall of sound. CISFINITUM - 'Coniunctio' 2 x CD (Ewers Tonkunst)
Cisfinitum is one of the oldest and well-known projects in the Russian industrial scene. This 2CD set contains the tracks from the most gloomy and profound albums of Cisfinitum - "Landschaft" and "Malgyl" (previously unreleased), which were recorded during 1999-2001. The material has been remastered and recompiled to become the new entity called "Coniunctio." Going through the desperate landscapes of today's dying spiritless world, the listener comes into the sacred and surreal inner space of an immaterial land full of light, mysticism and universal melancholy. One of the most beautiful and heartfelt records in the drone ambient style, reminding of the best and saddest Maeror Tri. Second edition in gatefold digisleeve with new artwork.
The fourth volume in the "Substantia Innominata" series comes from one of the best projects of the Russian experimental-atmospheric / drone / post-industrial-scene, headed by Evgueny Voronovsky from Moscow. Cisfinitum itself means the "logic of the infinite non-existence" - that "something" that is beyond all rational things. "Devotio" uses monumental bell-sounds and hypnotic drone-waves over various layers, dissolving into pure vibrations. With McKenzie being in Iceland and Potter being in Preston, a tête-à-tête was not easy. Andrew McKenzie mailed Potter the original source material for the concert, which he happily reworked into 'A Pressed On Sandwich', creating a dark, detailed soundworld that shows off both musicians' approach to drone atmospherics. The CD is packed in special paper wallet with silver print, and is released in an edition of 1010 copies, with the usual exceptional artwork from McKenzie. A solid addition to both The Hafler Trio and Colin Potter discographies.

COLUMN ONE - 'Feldaufnahmen I' CD (Auf Abwegen)
First in the series "Les Bruits Du Monde: L'Allemagne" - a series of pure field recordings by German multi-disciplinary experimental group Column One. The 12 pieces on the disc radiate with beauty - they demonstrate the full spectrum of sounds that can be found in any relatively quiet natural resort (here, the mountain range of Elbsandsteingebirge): dogs barking, humming of insects, crackling of twigs, footsteps, wind and more. A new phase for Column One, who now enter the terrain of sound ecology with their own twist. Limited edition of 500 copies in a digipak with booklet.

COLUMN ONE - 'World Transmission 3' LP (State Art)
'World Transmission 3' was recorded over a period of two days in 1994 at a church in Etzin, Germany. All instruments were played live and recorded with two microphones. The position of these mics made it possible to document not only the overall sound, but also movements within the room. A third mic was connected to effects and a record player, amp, and speakers. The results is a series of echoed, tonal vibrations and drones, with rising dynamics, and shuffling whispered sounds. All instruments used were objects or tools carrying a religious, mystical, or spiritual meaning. 45 minutes of music.

COLUMN ONE - 'World Transmission 4' LP (State Art)
'World Transmission 4' is a re-worked document of a Column One event on April 3rd, 1998. The concept of this night was to produce vibrations of ritual materials of various origins in a new connection and in a new location. Overall it's a more active piece than the 'WT:3' LP, with various percussive elements (chimes, clangs, tribal drummings) mixing with vocal processing and organic, sounds. Packaged very much like early PSYCHIC TV, uniform and informative. 43 minutes of music.

COMBATIVE ALIGNMENT - '...And Outside Glows The Red Dawn' CD (Malignant Records)
Surprisingly, the first full length CD from this powerful and visionary German project. Perhaps appropriately viewed as Combative Alignment's benchmark, their debut offers 6 tracks that work as a virtual musical thoroughfare to a more dreamlike, illusory state. Deeply brooding atmospheres, where omniscient layers of drones and reverberating sound currents meet measured, ritual percussion as performed under the glowing, gloomy haze of a primordial sunrise. "And Outside Glows The Red Dawn" shines a dim light on a world of obscure origin, full of dark Germanic mysticism and unearthly sonic terrains. Digipak, ltd x 1000.

CON-DOM - 'The Eighth Pillar' CD (Functional / Tesco Organisation)
"The Eighth Pillar" was the first full length release by UK Power Electronics outfit Con-Dom back in 1991 (SFCR). The CD is inspired by the life, writings and example of British author T.E. Lawrence - an enigmatic outsider who lived a tortured odyssey of physical and spiritual extremes in search of his own personal faith. The name of the CD derives from his book called "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom." The powerful sounds and strong vocals give a good impression on how torturing the life of Lawrence must have been. Con-Dom explores every kind of social tension with an acidic, violent and uncompromising attitude. Those who missed the LP version must see this record as a milestone or just a simple must! Concrescence is a collection of early, unreleased and lost songs from the archive of ‘The Thieves Of Impressions’. CONTEMPLATRON - 'Antarabhava / Six Realms' CD (Wrotycz)
Dark ambient inspired by "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" and based upon the Buddhist tradition. This is a kind of a soundtrack for the religious rituals. The inspiration for the first part of the album was derived from the "Book", read to the dying person, describing the process of dying the posthumous states of mind. The second part describes the six realms which, according to the Buddhist tradition, symbolise six destructive emotions: ignorance, hatred, enslaving desire, jealousy, pride and greed. Each track is dedicated to the different emotion. Comes in a cardboard sleeve and is limited to 500 copies.
Second release from this Polish dark ambient act. The DELOG experience is extraordinary, marvellous, even within the esoteric context of Tibetan Buddhism. The Tibetan word DELOG refers to one who has crossed the threshold of death and returned to tell about it. The person who is recognised as DELOG lays without any sign of breath, pulse or body warmth for many days. During that his or her mind journeys to other realms of experience: the pure display of enlightened mind as well as existence within samsaric delusion and ignorance. Mastered by Peter Andersson (Raison D'Etre). Digipak.

1992 saw the release of “A live coal under the ashes”, which was inspired by the events leading up to the changes across Eastern and Central Europe during 1989. Finally available again after many years, with remastered tracks and a new, unreleased track called: “Death follows the one eyed cow”. An album full of ambient atmospheres, drones, percussion, suitable dark narrations and some steady muted rhythms. CONTROL - 'Misanthrope' CD (L-White Records)

"Strong, shuddering currents of thick electronics, with a crushing underbelly of boiling, frying, layered frequencies, the vocals streaming forth in a sickeningly wet fashion. Much more structure going on here than the past, but twice the unbridled power. Excellent..." [Malignant]. Limited to 500 copies in a nice digipak.
2003 album from legendary US power noise artist Control (aka Thomas Garrison). Concrete and abrasive songs, consuming and devastating sounds, evolving and mutating noise. Keep your aspirins at hand - Control is here to crush you. To little pieces... Digifile.
CONTROL - 'The Means To An End' CD (Eibon Records)
Redefining the concept of aural aggression. Structured, multi-layered, hyper-complex Power Noise. Sharp like a surgical scalpel and powerful like a demolition hammer, Control’s music adds a new meaning to the abused "Power Electronics" definition. The only good way to describe "The means to an end"? A fierce beast constrained (temporarily...) in a steel cage, far too small to contain its natural aggressiveness. The cage won't last forever...
CONTROLLED BLEEDING - 'Between Tides' CD (Multimood)
"Originally released in 1985, "Between Tides" sees the previously extremely noisy team of Paul Lemos, Joe Papa and Chris Moriarty moving into less aggressive atmospheres... The album's strength lies in the balance between harsh noise and serene harmonics. These components work together to give the music a greater depth than you usually find in ordinary noise or ambient music... You have tribal style drumming here, pure soft ambience there and electronic body music-type instrumentals somewhere else. This is a lot more diverse and adventurous than most "dark ambient" records issued nowadays."

CONURE - 'Stream' CD (Edgetone Records)
It is difficult for a listener to step away from the narrative concept behind Conure's previous CD ("The Generation of Our Grandfathers") and just immerse oneself in the sounds. With his new work, Mark Wilson utilises non-musical themes in a different manner in order to allow that immersion. Themes run throughout the five tracks of "Stream", but this time the themes were used primarily as building blocks rather than as the focus of the CD. His new creation is rawer than previous works, while still retaining their compositional strengths. The music, constructed primarily from field recordings and other mic'ed sound processed through effects pedals, is probably the closest that Conure has come to reproducing the sound of his live performances in the studio environment. Ltd x 550 copies.
It’s hardly news to any connoisseur of Industrial music that Coph Nia like to cover songs. So far they’ve transformed The Leather Nun’s punk anthem “Prime Mover” into a brooding, industrial soundscape, and made songs by artists as diverse as Front 242, Bauhaus, Arthur Brown and The Rolling Stones their own. Coph Nia have decided to take the demon by the horns, and tried to exorcise the Cover Demon before it consumes them. The result is this collection of Coph Nia-fied covers including Ozzy Osbourne’s ”Mr Crowley”, , “Black Sabbath” by the band of the same name, “Sick Things” by Alice Cooper and “Levitation” by psychedelic space rockers Hawkwind. "Japanese underground icons Corrupted create droning, sludgy, painfully slow death / doom metal and ambient music along the same lines as bands like Earth, Boris, and Sunn O))). Formed in Osaka, Japan, circa 1994, the reclusive group has issued an inordinate number of singles, EPs, split discs, and full-length albums over the years, but always under their own idiosyncratic terms. These include holding anything remotely resembling rock stardom in utter contempt, mysteriously writing all of their lyrics in Spanish, and refusing to even take promo shots, so that the only known images of the group are those snapped by fans at their concerts" (All Music Guide).
