In 2005 Massimo Magrini was invited to provide a soundtrack for the M3M art exhibition in Pisa, Italy. The exhibition was based around images of the seaside and river estuary of Pisana area with CMASA airplane factory built there in it's centre. The marvelous seaside scenery mixed with vintage industrial locations, created an unexpected but amazing, nostalgic mood. To sculpture a soundtrack of this scenery Magrini also added treated piano, snippets of acoustic guitars, water sounds and metal samples. This may sound unusual for a BAD SECTOR release but all those new elements are perfectly blended into massive and ambient soundwaves, making CMASA probably the most emotional album of Massimo Magrini to date. In order to try to capture this feeling I wanted the music to leave a spectral, ghostly impression, and to have an organic decaying quality, like something trying to break through from another world. To this end my musical sources were mainly 78 rpm records, a vibraphone and an upright piano. Beehatch is a project from Phil Western (Download, Plateau) and Mark Spybey (Dead Voices On Air, ex-Zoviet France). The album was recorded in Los Angeles and England via internet file sharing. Far from being an impersonal way of making music, this technique has liberated the approach to the making of this album. The musicians were able to make music at leisure, in familiar environments. Phil and Mark have developed similarities in an approach to music making but in essence, Phil emerged smiling from the generation electronic and Mark slowly crept out of the distant days of four tracks and homemade instruments. Both are seasoned improvisers who started life as drummers and tend to ignore as many of the so-called 'rules of music making' as possible. Nothing is clear. Everything is possible. Two recordings from two vinyl projects. The first four pieces on the CD were recorded early 1998 for a 12" vinyl single on which these tracks were supposed to be cut at different speeds (16, 33, 45 and 78 RPM). Due to its complexity of pressing this record was never realised. The fifth and sixth track were originally intended to form a 10" album of a most unlikely meeting by Beequeen and MSBR. Based upon a mutual sound exchange, both Beequeen and MSBR worked independently on their pieces. The label that intended to release this, stopped while both bands were still recording. New Zealander Campbell Kneale, of prolific one-man bliss drone project Birchville Cat Motel, returns to his metallic alter-ego Black Boned Angel. This work is perhaps Kneale’s most obvious combination of the extreme minimalism of his ambient tendencies and the extreme maximalism of his forays into the center of the subterranean metal guitar riff. This album showcases 5 tracks of abandoned sludge trudge - a brutal mix of post punk style, No Wave and free proto-metal. If you enjoy music which evokes the sound of overly caffeined baby elephants slopping about in oily puddles, that have formed outside a former Soviet chemical factory, then this is the album for you. Formed in 1999 and fronted by bass player / singer Julian Cope and guitarist Doggen, the most dramatic change in the sound comes from new drummer Mr E, whose punctuating style of drumming echoes Sabbath's Bill Ward and Grand Funk's Don Brewer. This places greater emphasis on the rhythm section, in places even adding elements of brutal stop/start skank in the Jah Wobble period PIL tradition. File next to Comets On Fire. Very soon after that, Burroughs was busy punching to death a series of cheap Japanese plastic tape recorders, to which he applied himself with such force that he could punch one of them to death inside a matter of weeks, days even." 'Go Crystal Tears' is the first outing for the new Burial Hex sound and highlights influences such as 80s horror synth master John Carpenter and Goblin coming to the fore and blending with the almost black metal vocal style and "horror electronics". 'Temple of the Flood', clocking in at a 14 and a half minutes, is one of the final old-style Burial Hex tracks and proceeds in a style reminiscent of previous works with heavily processed analogue electronics and synths up, developing into eroding layers of primitive percussion, water drops and exotica piano, before ending in a deluge of sub bass and redemptive church organ. Nika (aka Zola Jesus) is here joined here by live member Dead Luke. Nika's voice, reminiscent of a teenage Diamanda Galas or a more deranged Beth Ditto, soars and wails within an ever changing cloud of pulsing synths and analogue electronics, joined by a warm synth line. Now with an extra drummer and a renewed, dangerously unhealthy obsession with Whitehouse, Burmese have slowed things down a bit. Gone are the hyperspeed blast beats and in their place are midtempo dirges, stumbling drunkenly through nihilistic, grinding sludge, spewing bile and ultraviolence. Pounding militaristic beats demarcate vast expanses of throbbing feedback, guttural growls, tarpit washes of bowel loosening low-end and 16 rpm grindcore. Things do speed up occasionally into blurry bursts of static and skree, but even then, they eventually devolve back into some sort of primordial and glacial caveman stomp, all murky thud and swampy roar, thick and suffocating and massively heavy. Grinding and pounding. Relentless and brutal.

Where "Amelia" showed Yeh’s sensitive side, "WSBC/SSS" goes straight for the jugular with pure distorted punk noise, all rampant high end and a growling analogue core. However what sets Yeh away from so many of his contemporaries is that beneath all the hellish distortion and crushing doom is a sense of harmony and pastoral perfection. It’s not often in noise music that you get this kind of intense-yet-measured collision, but Yeh manages to pull it off magnificently resulting in a 10” which crosses genre boundaries in the most punk-rock fashion imaginable. B°tong - aka Chris Sigdell - is former member of German/Swiss experimental electronica collective NID. "Structures" was recorded between 2005 and 2006. It was inspired by a visit to the Jukkasjärvi ice palace in Sweden. Its cold and dark atmosphere juxtaposed with middle of the summer weather gave birth to the idea which took shape some time later back in Switzerland. This early '80s sword-and-steroids epic by writer /director John Milius is notable for making a bankable action-star of Arnold Schwarzenegger and cementing the reputation of film composer Basil Poledouris (Iron Eagle, Robocop, Hunt For Red October, Starship Troopers). A dream assignment for a young composer eager to showcase the range his skills, the lusty Conan score hearkens back to the '30s heyday of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's unabashed Euro-classicism, but with enough modern rhythmic and percussive flourishes to satisfy the modern listener.
