The Italian electronics maestro seems to be still going strong after around 30 years with his latest release. Opener 'Ortini' is like the hazey recollection of a long train journey being put through an analogue filter bank. 'The Inflammatory Sesor' has a kind of feeling of nostalgia or distant memory that recalls William Basinski or The Caretaker. 'Oigada' sounds like two decomposing tape loops slightly out of sync creating a disorientating phasing effect. There are some very absorbing sounds here to get lost in. This album was recorded during Mathias Josefson's studies at the Royal Institute of Art. He was inspired by the longest night of the year in Stockholm, the day when there is almost no daylight. His ambition was to make an acoustic album of minimal drone music without any musical instruments. Moljebka Pvlse set up long nylon strings across his entire studio, which he then plucked and bowed and recorded with his favorite contact microphones on that very night. "Tulemme sokeiksi" ("We're Becoming Blind") is a retrospective CD by Musiikkivyory ("music avalanche"). In addition to being a curious chapter in the endless saga of the post-punk era, this DIY document is also one of the finer, more elusive threads of the cassette-culture scene. Originally issued in 1981, Musiikkivyory's two tapes were the work of Mika Taanila, a 15-year-old who would grow up to become an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. This CD features the key tracks from those micro-edition recordings. Musiikkivyory's output is typical of the early 80s raw zeitgeist, but with a timeless, teen-anguish twist. Taanila heartily embraces punk's total do-it-yourself ideal, yet his style is light years away from the conventional guitar groups of the day: Atonal riffs, home electronics, randomly cut-up radio sounds, noise and primitive industrial weltschmertz blend into a rough, highly personalised whole.
NADJA / BLACK BONED ANGEL - 'S/T' CD (20 Buck Spin)
A monumental cross-continental collaboration between Canada's prolific neo-doom duo Nadja and New Zealand's pitch black droners Black Boned Angel. The two 20+ minutes tracks contained on this self-titled collaboration have a less accessible vibe then the Jesu-like track on last year's 'Christ Send Light' EP. There are no vocals to be heard. They are comprised in equal parts of Nadja's fuzzed-out, lurching and hazy dream-doom, and BBA's razor-sharp metallic riff-shards. Extended passages of riff-static noise bleeds one track into the next while deep space eerieness looms ever present in the shadows. Finally the whole thing collapses under the weight of its own self-created black hole. This is the end. Digipak.

In 2009 Simon Whetham was commissioned by painter Kathryn Thomas to compose a surround sound composition and installation to accompany her Darkspace project, a series of paintings inspired by the infinity of the cosmos, which was exhibited as part of her biggest solo exhibition to date, 'Lightyears'. The composition was mixed down to a stereo version, mastered by Scanner, and released on Simon's own label, Traceable Echoes, for the exhibition. Simon reworked the raw materials of 'Lightyears', as he felt the brief was very restrictive, and wanted to hear the results of using the same material without these constraints. He also offered the opportunity to artists, who produced their own characteristic interpretation of the composition: Christopher McFall, David Wells, Fourm, Iris Garrelfs, John Kannenberg, Lawrence English, Maile Colbert, Mise En Scene, Philippe Petit, Richard Lainhart, Scanner and Yann Novak. There's a good story behind this disc. Why a simultaneous release of two SRF discs so closely related? Originally conceptualised as a 100 copy only disc to go with a special limited edition of Dead Weather Machine, Manifold commissioned Sleep Research Facility to create a single hour-long track of total dark-ambient drift based on the original material. To put it plainly; when we got this master, we were blown away and realized this was too good to let slip into obscurity. It would be a shame to keep this from being available to all people who seek out the best in dark-ambient and drift. Engaging, emotional and worthy of listening to ten years down the road. This is roughly an hour of slowly changing, deep, meditative drift based on the Dead Weather Machine source materials, in a slim, lightweight package. Think of it as a companion disc. So here you are, an option that you really shouldn't pass up. It is unimaginable that anyone that likes dark ambient to not like this one.

This album was not released during the active years of the band, but first saw the light of public day in 2005, remastered from an old cassette. Yahowha 13 created this album in a Corte Madera warehouse, just after their return from what is described as an Easter Resurrection in the Great Pyramid in Egypt. The blazing guitar rave-up/ragas, the pounding drum breakdowns, the excursions into semi abstraction which are the heart of the Yahowha 13 sound are still in effect, but here they are immersed in vortex of echo and noise. Warriors for psychic revolution, psychedelic rock adepts - one of a kind scene. Within a few months of this recording Yahowha was killed in a hang gliding accident.

Year Of No Light have recruited two new thirsty mercenaries to their line-up: Shiran, of Uber-doom combo Monarch! and Mathieu, of deviant-electronics act Aeroflot. Out of their cave, they crept into an old theatre to record these 4 tracks, catching every possible vibration of the trembling frame of this enlivened new mansion. All the energy collected there forms "Ausserwelt", the sophomore album of Year Of No Light. Mystical emanations flow out of these riffs colliding into each other to an in ear-splitting shriek. Cranked amps and molested drums hurl their mourning chant as a choir intoning its final psalms at the dawn of the Last Judgment. Year Of No Light follows the path opened by "Nord" towards more sombre psychedelics, creating its own blend of black metal, sludge, drone or any other influence marked with the seal of darkness. An ambiguous electrical network of acting singularities, now ready to afford the collective metaphysical crash to come. Ltd x 500 copies over two slabs of black vinyl in a superb gatefold sleeve.
