Coph Nia COPH NIA - 'Qliphothic Phantasmagoria' MCD (Wrotycz)

It’s hardly news to any connoisseur of Industrial music that Coph Nia like to cover songs. So far they’ve transformed The Leather Nun’s punk anthem “Prime Mover” into a brooding, industrial soundscape, and made songs by artists as diverse as Front 242, Bauhaus, Arthur Brown and The Rolling Stones their own. Coph Nia have decided to take the demon by the horns, and tried to exorcise the Cover Demon before it consumes them. The result is this collection of Coph Nia-fied covers including Ozzy Osbourne’s ”Mr Crowley”, “Black Sabbath” by the band of the same name, “Sick Things” by Alice Cooper and “Levitation” by psychedelic space rockers Hawkwind. Digipak.

Harvestman / VinylLP HARVESTMAN - 'In A Dark Tongue - Black' 2 x LP (Burning World Records)

Sumptuous double vinyl treatment of this 2009 album (Neurot Recordings). Harvestman is the brainchild of Neurosis vocalist / guitarist Steve Von Till, who considers "In A Dark Tongue" a venture into an imagined past. The album is inspired by Hawkwind, Fairport Convention, Tangerine Dream, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Skullflower, Caspar Brotzman and Loop, among others. It is a massive meeting point of styles and influences, all of which boil down to a surreal and inspired sound. The first Harvestman record, "A Grave Is A Grim Horse", was a dizzying confluence of delicate 70s British style folk, shimmery spaced out drift and glacial doom-drone sprawl, a constantly evolving, organic song suite that seemed to exist in some glorious blissed out druggy spacefolk otherworld. On "In A Dark Tongue", the glimmering strands of traditional folk music that had tethered the first record become even more tenuous. Black vinyl in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Plastic Crimewave Sound PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SOUND - 'Painted Shadows' CD (A Silent Place)

On "Painted Shadows", the Chicago group scales back the guitars just a touch in favour of vaguely tribal textures as on the hypnotic lead cut "I Feel Evils." There's a more cosmically devoted feel than past albums, touching on elongated Kraut-like soundscapes. But the group's trademark kitchen sink take on avant-rock - incorporating everything from Hawkwind space-rock to post-MC5 freakouts to widescreen Neu! aural landscapes - remains firmly in place.Digisleeve.

Samothrace SAMOTHRACE - 'Life's Trade' CD (20 Buck Spin)

Samothrace plays ultra heavy doom with harsh alcohol-soaked vocals. And yet a somber melodic sense also permeates the 4 long tracks on "Life’s Trade". Not in the overused, weepy Euro-doom tradition, but distinctly Midwestern, soulful and blues inflected. The songs shimmer with desperation, hopelessness and pain, both world weary for the plight of the oppressed and also intensely personal. The melodic interplay of guitarist Bryan Spinks and Renata Castagna is distinct in doom played this heavy and each song is meticulously crafted for maximum emotional impact. Recorded and mixed by Sanford Parker (Buried At Sea, Pelican, Nachtmystium), "Life’s Trade" rates as a stunning debut by a band soon to be on top of the doom genre.

Wicked King Wicker WICKED KING WICKER - 'God Is Busy... Save Yourself' CD (Cold Spring CSR125CD)

Wicked King Wicker is pure doom. Their brand of guttural expression strips away the rock n roll base and leaves nothing for the listener than the caustic reality of the darkest side of life. It is heavy, barbaric and void of hope. Wicked King Wicker has taken the power of doom metal and added noise to mix to make its point. God Is Busy Save Yourself is their 6th album, and their first released outside of the U.S. Wicked King Wicker is unique, and their extreme doom stands alone as the heaviest, most brutal doom imaginable and it may take you places you dont want to go.
