Control CONTROL - 'Deadly Sins' CD (Malignant Records)

Another pulverizing display of power from Thomas Garrison's Control. 7 tracks, thematically centered around the 7 deadly sins (with each track clocking in at 7 minutes), originally issued an extremely limited release (just 50 copies!) for the Elektroanschlag 11 Festival earlier this year. There is no atonement here, nor redemption offered. Just cold, jarring currents of massively built power electronics and horror filled death industrial, full of clamoring factory debris, razor sharp sheets of sonic violence, and grisly metallic grind, rounded out with Garrison's trademark vocal devastation. Digipak with design by John Balistreri (Slogun).

Culver / Seppuku CULVER / SEPPUKU - 'Dedicated To Soledad Miranda' CD (At War With False Noise)

First time on CD for both these bands: Culver is the awe-inspiring drone / noise project of Lee Stokoe (Marzuraan, Skullflower). Here he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing, bassy drone, purveying a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone. Seppuku give two tracks in very different styles... the first is an unbearably heavy doom piece, giving way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste... heavy duty! The second track sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. Unpleasant. Ltd x 500 copies.

Cyclotimia CYCLOTIMIA - 'Algorithms' CD (War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden)

Reissue of Cyclotimia's 2005 album (Irond). Moscow duo Cyclotimia is one of the best recognised, well-known Russian projects in the electronic scene today. On "Algorithms" album Cyclotimia presents apocalyptic version of electronic music, dark ambient sounds supported by bouncing electronic rhythms, religious samples and different effects, all blended in that way which makes this album very intriguing. Cyclotimia's trademark sound proceeds from using a mix of the modern synthesis technologies and cult vintage analogue / Soviet machines. For all who listen into Ulver, Holon or Forma Tadre. Digipak.

Fistula FISTULA - 'Goat' MCD (Crucial Blast)

Ohio is rotting. Fistula deliver another heavy dose of their septic, filthy, lumbering death-sludge doom in the form of Goat, a five-song EP of low-fi and low-end nihilistic filth and rabies-laced caveman thrash with songs based on the ghoulish discovery and subsequent investigation of the eleven decomposing bodies found in the Cleveland home of Anthony Sowell in the Autumn of 2009. This disc delivers more of the pulverizing, slime-covered sludge and primitive death metal rot that these Buckeye barbarians have been carving out in the back of Medina garages over the past ten years, continuing to follow in the coagulated blood tracks of Frost, Autopsy and Winter, but filtered through Fistula's uniquely mangled and inebriated scum-haze and utterly negative worldview.   Government Alpha GOVERNMENT ALPHA - 'Seventh Continent' CD (Dotsmark)

The last CD of the 00's by Japanese Noise hero Yasutoshi Yoshida. "Ah, the sweet rush of harsh noise... Seventh Continent, which throbs and contorts wildly over its seven hefty tracks, is an exceptional behemoth of a noise record. It packs the punch of a luminous supernova, making for a pulverizing release of impulsive yet calculated abrasion. Over tracks like Yoshida never remains supine - this noise isn't even momentarily left to drone or slowly build; its layers are constantly being dropped in and ripped out from underneath, earning the press materials' categorization as “extreme harsh noise.” There are no breaks, no time for thought; the chaos rips and whirls seamlessly until the last breath of its gasping finale, “Vague Parting,” which wraps up the record with a tormented ten minutes of baneful mayhem" (Indieville). Square DVD case.

Martians Go Home / 10inch MARTIENSGOHOME - 'MGH Plays Ulver' 10" (Kalinka Vichy)

Industrial-tinged sound art and drone inspired by Ulver; bleak avant-rockers from Norway. The first side is shrouded in a blackly evil veil, with rumbling, hissing frequencies. The other side is less harsh and evil but still very desolate, infused with the creeping dread of infinite dystopia. Alien sounds ricochet down a leaky rusted metal tunnel whilst a shadow in the distance emits the sound of a horrific digital chuckle, the essence of which dances in the atmosphere like an echo. The worst kind of echo - the aural reflection of your mind's worst possible thought? Spot-varnished sleeve.

Monno MONNO - 'Ghosts' CD (Conspiracy Records)

Monno have come a long way, extending their malignant nature through thick layers of fog. For this new burial they've built a soundtrack like creeper with traces of gargling glass and atonal spheres that swing through the tracks like unidentified floating objects in the sky. At times you get the feeling your brain is attached to a mechanical beehive suffering various degrees of degradation resulting from the ingress of water and salt attacks. Without doubt their most brutal and menacing album to date, etheric yet droning vocals covered in doom frost... An impaired psychomotor as troublesome as the stars that hang above us, with the reeking odor of a thousand corpses. Think along the abandoned shores of Corrupted, Burning Witch, Ulver or Godflesh.   Thee Maldoror Kollective THEE MALDOROR KOLLECTIVE - 'Themes For Proxima' MCD (Foreshadow Productions)

With each new release, Italian group Thee Maldoror Kollective crosses the boundaries of avantgarde music. Starting with black metal outbursts, they have come trough marriages with industrial, jazz and even opera. On "Themes for Proxima" TMK dive into cold dimensions of brave electronica. Music from this release was used in a Spanish movie production "Proxima", which only enhances its artistic value. Unpredictable and conventional, melodic and deconstructive, calm and frantic. Only a band with such an experience could compose music that is so mature. A bunch of critics have already compared them to ULVER, both in terms of development and breaking all the rules. Just under half an hour of music.

"Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings" is a two-CD collection defined by (mostly) acoustic musical settings of nature's scenery and impressions, or of personal sentiments mirrored in nature. This profound respect and a deeply romantic magical and mystical perception of nature are the common denominator of all the featured artists and the thematic foundation of their contributions. The fact that nearly all of the songs included here are either exclusive to this project or rare tracks that aren't otherwise available anymore serves to emphasize the extraordinary character of this release. Over 100 minutes of rare and exclusive tracks from Ainulindalë, Bauda, Dornenreich, Empyrium, Havnatt, Les Discrets (2 tracks), Lönndom, Musk Ox, Nebelung, Nest, Neun Welten, Nhor, Nucleus Torn, October Falls, Orplid, Syven, Tenhi, Ulver and Vàli (2 tracks).   Wolf & Winter WOLF & WINTER - 'When The Cold Earth Rests In Silence' CD (Twilight Records)

Wolf & Winter's second album is still in the vein of their first album's raw black metal, but moves a step forward into depressive black metal, combining ambient strings and bombastic drums from the first pagan metal and using a grimmer repertoire of black metal vocals. Not quite post black metal, it uses some elements of this genre to combine the first age of Bathory and Hellhammer with Ulver, Burzum and even Agalloch. To stand in the roots of primitive and raw music is why this second album does not completely move forward into a more modern concept of black metal, but this doesn't mean it's stuck in the past. This way, the music gains more solidness and independence in a genre which has been so done, so constructed, so reconstructed and at last, so repeated. Digipak.
