"Andrea Borghi's solo album is ultimately more rewarding for its (relative) sparseness, with some unspectacular but extremely effective laptop treatments adding some fizz to his thrummed fuzz bass jams. It's still a case of listening to how the sound of the bass, rather than the sound of Borghi playing the bass, interfaces with the technology. 'Attrazione 2' comes closest to transcending these limitations, with Borghi scraping and rubbing the strings to give his Max/MSP patch something more colourful to sink its teeth into" (The Wire). Crisis came into existence in the late '70s amidst the British hardcore punk movement. They took the same energy that came from the youthful, raw anger of the Oi! movement, but with restrained lyrical phrasing and strict rhythms. Members include Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford who would later expand upon some of the Crisis material for their Neofolk group DEATH IN JUNE. Wakeford later went on to form SOL INVICTUS, whilst Luke Rendall and Lester Jones would later find involvement in Theatre Of Hate and Sex Gang Children, respectively. Ctephin are a whole drone-family from the Great Plains creating bizarre and lovely ambient noise, atmospheric and noisy soundscapes with various friends and their 7 children. Calling themselves "Umbrella Noize Collective", they live to the: "Law of Liberty as laid out in Liber AL vel Legis". "Duad" is their first vinyl release and uses pumping drones, field recordings, guitars, metallic effects and a kind of very harmonic cembalo instrument. "Styx" is the most mainstream work in the Cyclotimia discography. The music is free of their usual experimental and academic explorations; here the emphasis is made on the rhythms. Eleven compositions depict the sickly technogenic reality of the planet wrapped by networks of global capital, media glamour and ideological obsessions. In ancient Greek mythology the Styx was the embodiment of primeval dread and gloom, from which the first living creatures emerged. This was a personification of the underworld river whose pestilent currents seclude life from death. Similarly to this mythic river, currents of credits, percent, funds, financial quotations, capital issues, barrels of oil and advertising spaces flow on the Cyclotimia album to the accompaniment of hard, sterile and atmospheric electronic music. "Tulemme sokeiksi" ("We're Becoming Blind") is a retrospective CD by Musiikkivyory ("music avalanche"). In addition to being a curious chapter in the endless saga of the post-punk era, this DIY document is also one of the finer, more elusive threads of the cassette-culture scene. Originally issued in 1981, Musiikkivyory's two tapes were the work of Mika Taanila, a 15-year-old who would grow up to become an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. This CD features the key tracks from those micro-edition recordings. Musiikkivyory's output is typical of the early 80s raw zeitgeist, but with a timeless, teen-anguish twist. Taanila heartily embraces punk's total do-it-yourself ideal, yet his style is light years away from the conventional guitar groups of the day: Atonal riffs, home electronics, randomly cut-up radio sounds, noise and primitive industrial weltschmertz blend into a rough, highly personalised whole.

ROBERT SCOTT THOMPSON - 'Poesis Athesis (Music From The Flying Phoenix Films Of Terence Dunn)' CD (Lens Records)
Having originally worked together in the mid-80s, Chi Kung master Terrence Dunn once again contacted Robert Scott Thompson to compose music for his current series of video releases. Thompson composed the music to work specifically with the pace, mood and dynamics of the Flying Phoenix form of Chi Kung. The collaboration eventually spanned ten films and Thompson composed more than ten hours worth of music over a two year period. The thirteen tracks on "Poesis Athesis" are rooted in Thompson's ambient style but also blend with elements of electronica, ethnic influences and a personal homage to French composer Erik Satie. Thompson creates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation suitable for both introspective and meditative moments as well as chill out regeneration. Digipak.

ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)
Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

Reissue of two old albums from Tasmanian necro BM legend Sin Nanna, brought together on vinyl for the first time. "Black Desolate Winter" was recorded during May 2005 and "Depressive Hibernation" was recorded during February 2005. This album is full of the undulating trademark buzzing guitars that Striborg employs, but the structure of the songs feel something like Burzum. 1 hour & 20 minutes of suffocating, depressive grimness.

Besides the addition of standing bass and piano, Merritt has added a lot of atmosphere to the song by his playing of some mellow flutes, wine glasses and manipulated tea kettles. Wolf & Winter's second album is still in the vein of their first album's raw black metal, but moves a step forward into depressive black metal, combining ambient strings and bombastic drums from the first pagan metal and using a grimmer repertoire of black metal vocals. Not quite post black metal, it uses some elements of this genre to combine the first age of Bathory and Hellhammer with Ulver, Burzum and even Agalloch. To stand in the roots of primitive and raw music is why this second album does not completely move forward into a more modern concept of black metal, but this doesn't mean it's stuck in the past. This way, the music gains more solidness and independence in a genre which has been so done, so constructed, so reconstructed and at last, so repeated. Digipak.
WOLFSKIN - 'O Ajuntar Das Sombras' CD (Malignant Records)
Originally intended to be a re-issue of Wolfskin's 2001 limited release "The Gather of Shadows by the Setting Sun" (Ajna), this eventually evolved into a re-working of three tracks from that release, complimented by 7 newly recorded tracks. As the Wolfskin era comes to end, this release represents a glimpse into their past… a more organic, flowing ambient record than what you may find today. This tidy little 7" from Dutch act Zyrtax (aka Johnny Van e Kookwijk of Dead Husbands, Masonic Youth etc) could be inspired by the good old-school Industrial / Experimental of SPK, Esplendor Geometrico and Maurizio Bianchi - representing a constant evolution of 80s loop based industrial into the new millennium.
