CULVER / SEPPUKU - 'Dedicated To Soledad Miranda' CD (At War With False Noise)
First time on CD for both these bands: Culver is the awe-inspiring drone / noise project of Lee Stokoe (Marzuraan, Skullflower). On this CD he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing, bassy drone, purveying a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone. Seppuku give two tracks in very different styles... the first is an unbearably heavy doom piece, giving way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste... heavy duty! The second track sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. Unpleasant. Ltd x 500 copies.

DEL - 'Projectionist Please Focus' CD (OHM Records)
This is a collection of Norwegian improv noise collective DEL's live performances between 1998 and 2000. The seven man unit seems to use all manner of junk, and drums, guitars etc and created vaguely rhythmic experiments, that often combine to create sounds that can be gentle and excellent drifting ambience, or even gel to create SKULLFLOWER / RAMLEH workouts. Remixes from Lasse Marhaug, John Hegre (both members of Jazkamer / Jazzkammer) and Jon Birger Wormdahl (KA).

HOTOTOGISU & PRURIENT - 'Snail On A Razor' CD (Hospital Productions)
Live 'in person' collaboration of mid-ranged feedback hell laden with raw human drones of cosmic existential turbulence from Matthew Bower (Total, Skullflower, Ramleh, Pure, Sunroof! etc) Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, Zäimph etc.) and Dominick Fernow (Vegas Martyrs, Nihilist Assault Group, Ash Pool etc).

MERZBOW - 'Puroland' CD (OHM Records)
This disc from the Japanese master builds after many minutes into noise, but this is structured, rhythmic, surging blasts of localised power. Reminds of old Skullflower, Holland Skin Tunnel, a loud Nurse With Wound. This is because it feels so instrumental, almost as if a guitar or two are involved in this. From there we return to Akita's early style where the walls of noise were not so loud and thick. There are very obvious variations and mechanical changes within the piece, creating patterns and moods. Digipak.

SKULLFLOWER - 'IIIrd Gatekeeper' CD (Crucial Blast)
Reissue of Skullflowers 1992 album 'IIIrd Gatekeeper' (originally on Justin Broadrick's Headdirt label), featuring the lineup of Matthew Bower, Stuart Dennison and Anthony DiFranco. This is Skullflower at their heaviest, grinding out slow, sludgy riffs and crushing, almost industrial rhythms amid a tempest of psychedelic guitar noise and dense sheets of feedback - easily the most crushing, rock-based music that Skullflower ever produced. A skulldozing dose of post-industrial dirge rock that sat comfortably next to Godflesh, Swans, and Ramleh. Gatefold digifile (retaining much of the original artwork), with new liner notes and a complete remastering.
SKULLFLOWER - 'Orange Canyon Mind' CD (Crucial Blast)
The 2005 full length from the legendary UK free / drone / psych outfit, featuring some of the most searing, synapse scorching droneworks that Matthew Bower (Sunroof!, Total, Hototogisu) has unleashed to date. "Orange Canyon Mind" is the follow up to 2002's awesome "Exquisite Fucking Boredom" (Tumult), and continues that album's utter mutation of stoned out riffs pulled taffy-like into eternity / oblivion and star-rupturing blasts of sonic white light. Over the 8 tracks / 60 minute running time, Bower and cohorts build massive horizontal drones and melodic supernovas. Superb, beautiful, brain melting stuff.

SKULLFLOWER - 'Tribulation' CD (Crucial Blast)
A black-void beaming of utterly destroyed drone rock and crushing amplifier obliteration that rains down black ash and punishing blasts of feedback skree on the listener. A dynamic, bleary-eyed meditation. An avalanche of powerdrone that threatens to take your cranium apart and transport your grey matter into filthy new dimensions infested with melodic razor cuts and submerged mantras. A triumphant eruption of apocalyptic meta-metal and radioactive raga swarms, guaranteed to loosen eardrums. This album is one of the heaviest, harshest slabs of guitar armageddon from Matthew Bower since the glory days of Total, and bridges the void between the krautrock / celestial free drone influence of the last few Skullflower albums, and the blackened molten death of his Mirag material.
TOTAL - 'Exploded Star Sad Servant' CD (Self Abuse Records)
Hypnotic, hallucinatory guitar feedback from Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Hototogisu, Sunroof!, Pure). Originally the project was noise and industrial oriented and received occasional help from members of Ramleh and Ake. Towards the later 1980's the sound became more guitar oriented, leading to the creation of Skullflower. In the early 1990's, Matthew brought back the Total name to release his solo music aside from Skullflower. Although almost the releases by the second incarnation of Total are Matthew alone, towards the end he was joined by John Godbert, making Total a duo.

After three records, each heavier than the last, comes Borne Black, a sprawling black sun explosion of creepy crawly riffage, lumbering lugubrious tempos, tarpit sludge, and spaced out abstract buzz and shimmer, if you fancy Moss, Bunkur, Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, SUNNO))), Wolf Eyes, Khanate, Skullflower, Human Quena Orchestra, Monarch, Corrupted, Otesanek, Habsyll, and all the various other denizens of the inky black dronedirgedoom underworld, and have yet to hear WKW, you are in for a treat.
