Asmus Tietchens ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Notturno' CD (Die Stadt)

Part 10 of the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums from 1980-1991 on CD. "Notturno" was originally released on LP by Discos Esplendor Geometrico in 1986 (ltd x 518) and then on CD by Baronni in 1993. Following 'Formen Letzter Hausmusik' and 'Hydrophonie', 'Notturno' was another 'serious' attempt at composing more electro-acoustic music, and Tietchens limits himself to using the (grand) piano, looping the sounds and filtering through sound effects and synths. To use loops as to the extent that Tietchens does is something that sets him aside from the regular musique concrete composers. Remastered.

Jennifer Gentle / VinylLP JENNIFER GENTLE - 'Live In The House Of God' SINGLE SIDED 12" (A Silent Place)

Recorded in an empty, deconsecrated church in summer 2003, this LP is another installment in an on-going series of records documenting the weird life of Jennifer Gentle in the foggy plains of Northern Italy. Basically the sound of JG's mainman Marco Fasolo going wild with an old, battered electronic piano and a bunch of sound effects, "Live at the House of God" is a side-long improvisation sharing the same spirit of those 20-minutes keyboard freak-outs Sun Ra used to record in the late 60s. Alternatively spacey and noisy, the piece is a dark, often unnerving exploration in sound, shimmering all the way through with a distinct Krautrock / early Cluster vibe. The new owners of the church were horrified and outraged by the sheer loudness of the performance, but God liked it a lot. Single-sided white vinyl in a deluxe spot-varnished sleeve with insert. Strictly limited to 300 copies only!!! LAST COPY - ACT FAST!

Lago Morto / VinylLP LAGO MORTO - 'Obitorio Veneto' LP (Von Archives)

Lago Morto is a band conceived by Italian artist Nico Vascellari as contribution to the exhibition ‘Rock Scissors Paper’ (Kunsthaus Graz). Lago Morto is ‘a social punk sculpture’, a way ‘to turn the model of the cast band upside down. Lago Morto is about things that casting calls usually exclude - targeted aggression, unpredictable social effects and local politics’. The result is a band that toured for 15 days in Vittorio Veneto in non musical venues such as bar, osteria, pizzeria, launderette, video store etc. The LP contains all 14 songs the band has created. Ltd x 300 copies with a full-size insert. Italian import.

  Licht-Ung / 7inch LICHT-UNG - 'Kristall' 7" (Drone Records)

LICHT-UNG ("glade") is the name of a label, art and sound project from Germany, with a very peculiar and rather dadaistic approach. The two pieces on "Kristall" seem to be based mainly on feedback and metal or glass sounds that are carefully put together for a strange-sounding trip. Side A consists of humming, growling drones, low siren-like sounds and high-frequency feedbacks, powerful and absorbing and very abstract, while never turning into sheer noise. Side B delivers a crystal-clear noise chant and metallic overtones processed with obscure effects. First edition of 300 copies on blue / black marbled vinyl with silk-screened covers and silver printed black inlay.

Machinefabriek MACHINEFABRIEK - 'Duotoon' 3" Metallised CD (None)

A most refreshing, back-to-basics composition from Rutger Zuydervelt. 'Duotoon' is said to be inspired by the works of Alvin Lucier and Steinbruchel - an intriguing pairing of influences, but you can certainly hear their respective fingerprints all over this fine concoction. As Zuydervelt himself is keen to point out, there are "no dusty vinyl crackles, textural field recordings or grainy guitars here... just pure tones." A statement like that is itself music to the ears, implicitly acknowledging and shunning elements that are increasingly becoming platitudinous mainstays of the ambient/microsound genre. 'Duotoon' is all about nuanced harmonic interplay and layered micro-intervals, drawing the ear toward clever phasing effects and infinitesimal melodic development. On the surface it's all very simple, but it's within this economical, back-to-basics construction that the piece's great strength resides. Beautifully presented on a 3" metallised CD in a card sleeve.

Mezire MEZIRE - 'Corrosion Effects' CD (Rustblade / Zero01one)

An extreme and balanced mix of power electronics, industrial and dark electro from this German band. "Mezire is a good example of a band that has seriously evolved in sound throughout the years. While they started in the 90s with a rather electronic-orientated sound they progressively evolved towards more industrial ideas. "Corrosion Effect" goes a step further, touching the border of pure noise. There are still a few industrial elements running through their work, but generally speaking this album sounds like an ambient wall of noise. The originality probably resists in the use of vocals, which give it a more human aspect. This is a more accessible noise release however it remains pretty extreme!" (Side-Line).

  Ovro / 7inch OVRO - 'Horizontal / Vertical' 7" (Drone Records)

On "Horizonal / Vertical" "the wondergirl of Finnish experimental music" presents deep waving droning noises, set against vortexing echoes and swirling digital effects, derived from what could be instrumental sources or object recordings, moving the willing listener into a surrealistic subconscious dimension. On the second side the contrasting conrete material fills your imagination with "something" that "happens", so captivating and condensed! This music spreads like an unconscious aural travelogue in different spatial directions (horizontal and vertical). Cinematographic and narrative drone atmospheres, with great care for even tiniest details. First edition of 300 copies on white vinyl with handpainted sleeve pasted up with pieces of newspaper and filmstrips. Includes an insert.

Planivaar PLANIVAAR - 'The Yellow Square' CD (Split Femur Recordings)

Planivaar is the experimental side-project of Mark Lippett. This is the debut release for British label Split Femur Recordings, with artist and label both based in the West Midlands. This is a beautifully crafted record, created with soul and a passion for the quirky side of music. Spontaneity and chance elements blend with dreamy soundscapes created with guitar, synth and effects pedals. A heartfelt, warm, human piece of work, and very rewarding indeed.

  Rothko / 7inch ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)

Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

Shadow Theater / 7inch SHADOW THEATER - 'Ein Splitter Glas' 7" (Apocalyptic Radio)

Two tracks of rhythmic power noise and heavy electronics. "Shadow Theater succeed where many others fail. They really go off... The track '33rpm' is angst ridden noise at its best. A merciless barrage of sub-sonic frequencies and post-industrial noise almost bury what may be a human voice. The 'B' side of this excellent study in the long-term effects of too much time alone, 'Ein Splitter Glas', presents a vocal treatment laid over a modulating noise loop... Love it" (auralpressure).
