SHINJUKU THIEF - 'The Scribbler' CD (Cold Spring CSR62CD)
Reissue of the 1992 classic by this Australian genius, originally released in an edition of 500 copies (Dorobo). Occasional bursts of factory noise, industrial rumblings and disembodied German voices form the backdrop to a minimalist reworking of Kafka's "The Trial." An album of dense filmic atmospheres and orchestral instrumentation. 'The Scribbler' has been digitally remastered and is enhanced with a series of video clips constructed by Richard Grant (I+T=R), incorporating both new material together with the original images prepared for "The Scribbler" live show.
First part of the Witch Trilogy. A classic gothic industrial album paying homage to both German expressionist film of the 1920's and supernatural horror from the 1500's. Dark orchestral timbres set into rich soundscapes, interspersed with outbursts of violence and power. According to Darrin Verhagen, the man behind Shinjuku Thief, The Malleus Malleficarum, a 15th century treatise on how to identify and deal with witches, provided a central thread to what became a trilogy. Along with the other two albums in the trilogy this comes highly recommended! Textured card artwork.

SHINJUKU THIEF - 'The Witch Haven' CD (Dorobo)
Third part of the Witch Trilogy. Dark post-classical compositions alternating between poignantly lyrcial and furiously dramatic, set amongst disturbing supernatural soundscapes, and unsettling cinematic sound design. Blending the lush sweep of Raison D'etre, the epic grandeur of In Slaughter Natives and a surreal violence to his sound design closer to musique concrete than dark ambience, Shinjuku Thief's 2002 album delivers on all counts. Enough touchstones to satisfy the audience's appetite for familiar territory, but with enough risks to transcend cliche. This is a magnificent album! Along with the other two albums in the trilogy this comes highly recommended! Textured card artwork.

SHINJUKU THIEF - 'The Witch Hunter' CD (Dorobo)
The second part of the Witch Trilogy and the thematic sequel to The Witch Hammer, threading surreal gypsy-like fringes to the classical/gothic blend. East European violin, reflective passages of brooding ambience and occasional moments of hope are undercut by sheer orchestral violence and a chillingly bleak filmic soundscape. Along with the other two albums in the trilogy this comes highly recommended! Textured card artwork.
