5/5/2000 5/5/2000 - 'Reflektionen Musique' CD (Post Replica)

£5 Meltdown (2005) Lost, unreleased and unknown soundscapes from San Diego’s cult Ambient electronic ensemble. Named after the date many believed would be the end of existence as we know it (5/5/2000), Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation, Attention Deficit Recordings chief) and Nathan Berlinguette (Creation Is Crucifixion, M. Kourie, Daft Alliance records bossman), unleash an apocalyptic soundtrack of startling sonic paranoia. Includes the duo’s last studio track recorded sometime between 1999 and 2000, along with a beautiful live set performed on SDSU’s KCR radio.

Bardoseneticcube BARDOSENETICCUBE - 'XXX' CD (Aquarellist)

(2006) This album is inspired by the life and works of Nika Turbina - a poetess who started to write grown-up tragic poems when she was only 4 years old, with her first book printed when she was only 9 (later translated in 12 languages). After living pathologically strange life, receiving the "Golden Lion" prize, and being held in mental hospital, at the age of 27 Nika tragically died falling down from the 5th floor window. The musical dedication of Bardoseneticcube is presented in 12 untitled tracks filled with surrealistic feelings and some childish morbidity. Obscure loops and industrial soundscapes are buried under a pile of rhyme wreckage, melody fragments and almost chaotic manifold of strange sounds. Ltd x 509 hand-numbered copies.

Burning Star Core BURNING STAR CORE - 'Challenger' CD (Hospital Productions)

(2008) "Challenger" is a composed work rather than C. Spencer Yeh's more improvised work, each piece revolving around a central melodic theme with field recordings, an audio diary bridging the gaps. Emotions of a period of time set to tape. The sounds range from pure tonal mood to huge electronic crescendos. But what’s most remarkable is the use of space, where parts come in and drop to build or recede. An album that is both dynamic, yet consistent as a full statement.

Burning Star Core BURNING STAR CORE - 'Let's Play Wild Like Wildcats Do' CD (Hospital Productions / RRRecords)

(2005) Full-length CD from Spencer Yeh’s raging Burning Star Core project. The first of the two lengthy tracks is reminiscent of Faust / Conrad Outside The Dream Syndicate, augmented with a brass section and a thick tar of distortion. The second track reminds of Cale’s early Sun Blindness sessions. Psych / Noise / Experimental / Drone / whatever from the legendary Cincinnati act. The cover art features a strategically degraded still from Jean Rollin’s “La Vampire Nue”. Ltd x 1000. Recommended.

  Dissecting Table DISSECTING TABLE - 'Ultra Materials 1986 - 1991' 2 x CD (Steinklang)

(2007) Dissecting Table is one of the most influential Noise artists from the early Japanese Industrial years. The first Dissecting Table recordings were quite unique in the scene, as the band was working with very concrete rhythms and screaming voices and they even had dark and slow songs, which was completely untypical for this time and region. The only comparisons to early DT recordings might be the legendary albums of Grim or White Hospital. This set includes the A-side of the first 7" (Ultimate Psychological Description - 1986), the first LP (Ultra Point Of Intersection Exist - 1987), the first CD (Between Life And Death - 1990), all compilation tracks up to 1991 and even an unreleased track from 1986! A milestone for Noise addicts and one of the most essential works in Noise music in general!

Jason Crumer JASON CRUMER - 'Ottoman Black' CD (Hospital Productions)

(2008) "Ottoman Black" is an album of midnight drones and true noise. Using powerfully clear electronics as a base for declarative noise bursts, Crumer manipulates the sounds with a resounding animosity. In the vein of Pedestrian Deposit and Air Conditioning, Crumer yields his mean streak to an array of silences over the course of the album. The theme here is personal relations; tracks like "Betrayal After Betrayal" have a conversational quality, both the screams and the muffles, the physicality. "Where Were You" is an actionist-influenced piece of torture. There's nothing not painful here, especially the quiet; the peaks are almost a relief. Ottoman Black is a stern and unforgiving universe.   Peter Rehberg PETER REHBERG - 'Kapotte Muziek By Peter Rehberg' MCD (Korm Plastics)

The fourteenth installment in this series is a mini CD by Peter Rehberg (Pita / KTL). For his rework, Rehberg used the recordings of the very first Kapotte Muziek workshop (and concert) held in september 1997, as part of Staalplaat's 'Masterclass' event at the Korzo Theatre, in Den Haag. Moving away from digital computer noise for this work, Rehberg crafted a beautifully soft but outspoken piece of music. Low rumbles at micro levels and moments of silence are interspersed with isolated throbs and shimmering mid-frequency drones. A total playing time of 17:30.

Prurient / Kevin Drumm PRURIENT & KEVIN DRUMM - 'All Are Guests In The House Of The Lord' CD (Hospital Productions)

"All Are Guests In the House of the Lord" is the first collaboration between Prurient and Kevin Drumm. Both artists are regarded as singular stylistic entities in their own right. Kevin Drumm is known for his improvised work, as well as being a mainstay in the Chicago noise world. Prurient has been toiling in the fields of noise for over a decade and has developed an increasingly dynamic output incorporating darkly arranged synths. Their cumlative work displayed here is both unexpected and focused. Using source sounds of intense tonal drones supplied by Drumm, the two create a haunted atmosphere that is far removed from noise, exploring minimal junctures, using field recording and clean patient vocals to lead the way. "All Are Guests In the House of the Lord" is among the darkest record in either artist's catalogue. The subtle textures of the electronics combined with near cinematic arrangements make for a record that is engaging and consistent in mood of tension. Ltd x 1000.

Sleep Research Facility SLEEP RESEARCH FACILITY - 'Deep Frieze' CD (Cold Spring CSR72CD)

Ultra deep, glacial Dark Ambient, based around Antarctic co-ordinates. The polar regions are awe-inspiring environments of inhospitable minimalism, and at the same time there's a beautiful serenity to be found in their uncharted bleakness. There's a powerful purity and a timelessness to be found there; snow which has lain un-trampled for millennia and ice which formed eons ago; mountain ranges and deserts and rivers to be found if you look. 'Deep Frieze' is SRF's second album for Cold Spring and here deep, resonant, abyss-like drones shine forth from icy chasms below. Jewelcase with foldout map booklet.

Sutcliffe Jügend SUTCLIFFE JUGEND - 'The Fall Of Nature' CD (Ground Fault Recordings / Hospital Productions)

"The Fall Of Nature" is an epic, grandiose drone piece - almost one hour of pure electronics that echoes the masters of the form. The album grows in intensity throughout the recording making for an unexpected release. There are many sides of darkness and many ways to express it. "The Fall Of Nature" is the balance of sound, in a listenable format. The initial feeling is that of an almost holy, heavenly sound, the skies opening in tribute to the nature which is falling. Yet fans of classic SJ will be plenty pleased at the psychotically manic conclusion that will not disappoint any fans of pe terror. This music takes aim at several nerve centers at once. This is not just Noise, Drone or Power Electronics, but something new that mixes various elements of each together for the first time.

Sutcliffe Jügend SUTCLIFFE JUGEND - 'This Is The Truth' CD (Ground Fault Recordings / Hospital Productions)

"This Is The Truth" is the first Sutcliffe Jügend studio album in eight years and quite possibly stands as one of the most original and perfectly balanced noise compositions of the last 10 years. It references and uses classic Sutcliffe Jügend of old, while bringing in an entirely unique and fresh element one does not hear in noise. This album is a brilliant blend of foreboding tension, and anxiety while using the most lively, disturbing, and textual elements of noise, all of which are brought together with the phenomenal detail and balance of an accomplished electronic composer. Songs that you think will explode leave you hanging with tension, while others erupt with violence out of nowhere. An absolutely brilliant album that was worth the wait! Ltd x 1000. ACT FAST!

The New Blockaders / Thurston Moore / Jim O'Rourke THE NEW BLOCKADERS / THURSTON MOORE / JIM O'ROURKE - 'The Voloptulist' CD (Hospital Productions)

Dream-team hook-up between a trio of the most important free-noise theorists of the modern age: The New Blockaders and Thurston and Jim of Sonic Youth et al. Hard to work out who is doing exactly what here - though the presence of drummer Chris Corsano on the second track is pretty unmistakable - but the overall feel is of one of TNB's early 'Symphonie X' works, populated by thin strings of feedback, the crackle of electronic jack-to-jack friction and a subtle ring of bone. Beautifully eerie and a little more pro-drone than the bulk of TNB's work. The second track is just unbelievable, with a slow hiss of feedback torn apart by Corsano's triumphal, spirit / energy scattershots, marching a legion of ghosts all the way over the horizon. Highly recommended.

Travis Ryan / DBATC TRAVIS RYAN / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS - 'Split' CD (Chrome Peeler)

Split release from two US acts: Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation, 5/5/2000) and Death By A Thousand Cuts. Travis Ryan's four tracks open the disc with an edgy, paranoid ambience that mixes environmental buzzes and electronic hum with blurry theremin melodies and hushed buzzsaw tones, evoking the faint but discernible hum of electricity you feel when standing at the edge of an urban landscape in the middle of the night. Death By A Thousand Cut's nightmarish free electronic designs are conjured from noxious bass sinewaves and cloudy keyboard drones, curling upwards out of metal-on-metal carnage and blasts of laser-beam effects-pedal violence, and the music becomes strangely beautiful, especially with the cosmic Troum-meets-Bastard Noise insectoid frequencies of final track "Approach Of The Black Claw".   Epitaph For John VA - 'Epitaph For John' CD (Korm Plastics)

Compilation with Asmus Tietchens, RLW (Ralf Wehowsky), Merzbow, Freiband (Frans De Waard) and John Watermann. "On April 2nd 2002 John Watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. Having in the final year of his life returned to artistic pursuits, he still had vast plans for future projects. Among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with Frans de Waard on a new release. Although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and Watermann never completed any work towards the project, Watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release. This release serves as a record of Watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience."
