This luxurious epic release by the Swedish sound terrorist Kristian Olsson (Survival Unit), probably built a monument for the postmortem electronics. A style mainly characterised by dirt, chaos, noise and deliberate disregard for quality. Two long tracks of Bottenskrapet album offer a hymn for the dump of human civilisation and its madness. Absolute provocation released in the heaviest pic-LP vinyl illustrated with the visualisation of the talented 21st c. collagist Kristian Olsson, whose suggestion equals that of Hieronymus Bosch's hallucinations. The crushing melancholia, the endless questions of “what if?” and “why?”, as well as the concepts of regret, missed opportunity, or a feeling or moment in time that can never be recaptured. But even in the midst of this gloomy scene, hope and light are born, for loss is never total. Memory lingers, a residue of evidence is left behind, and life goes on. “For me, the album is an extension of the previous release, Ghosts on Magnetic Tape, which relates to Electronic Voice Phenomena, or the idea that the dead can still communicate with the living world through recorded media. In order to try to capture this feeling I wanted the music to leave a spectral, ghostly impression, and to have an organic decaying quality, like something trying to break through from another world. To this end my musical sources were mainly 78 rpm records, a vibraphone and an upright piano. No synths or electronics were used, only organic sources or instrumentation that has been around for at least the last century.” Stunning full-colour picture disc, pressed in an edition of 500 copies only! K11 - 'Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D.' Enhanced CD (Actual Noise)
K11 is the nom de plume of the Italian sound artist Pietro Riparbelli. For "Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D.", Riparbelli entered Assisi Cathedral (completed in 1230 A.D.) in the Umbria region of Italy, not far from Riparelli’s hometown of Tuscany. The audio was recorded in the cathedral’s lower basilica, the oldest area, where the relics of St. Francis Of Assisi reside. Utilising short-wave radio as his primary instrument Riparbelli has captured a haunting array of cavernous sounds, displaced signals and found ambiance. With the addition of some voice and organ elements, "Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D." sounds not unlike the recordings of Philip Jeck and William Basinski under the influence of Crowleyean Magick and Sacred Geometry. A video shot inside the cathedral by Riparbelli is included on the disc to give the listener a visual picture of the aging structure. As in all K11’s work, the themes of magick, religion, numerology and esotericism are present throughout this reverent document of aural mysticism. Digipak.

ROBERT RICH - 'Somnium' DVD (Hypnos)
2008 reissue of Rich's 2001 epic! "Somnium" is a re-creation of Robert Rich's famous "sleep concerts," which began during Rich's time at Stanford University. These sleep concerts have been much discussed, but rarely witnessed. Consequently, a lot of speculation and mystery has grown about them. Rich has meticulously crafted a studio interpretation of his notorious all-night Sleep Concerts, combining newly-recorded electro-acoustic, environmental and electronic textures, with elements created for the original live events. The deep and sonorous flow of "Somnium" guides the listener through hypnogogic states, through a mysterious and ever-changing dreamscape, with levels of subtle detail that reward both active attention and background listening. The tech bit: "Somnium" is an ordinary DVD disc, playable in all regular DVD players, as well as DVD-rom drives on a PC or Mac... to put it another way, it's a DVD-video with music only, no picture (aside from the menus). The DVD format was used because to enable the storage of 7 HOURS (!!!) of continuous audio on one side of one disc! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
