Two incredible collaborative pieces by France's prolific Philippe Petit and Scottish goup Cindytalk built around piano, electronics, voice and that kinda trans-dimensional murmur and crackle we already love both of them for. Some background info: Cindytalk has existed since the early 1980s and, helmed by founder Gordon Sharp, survivor of the original Scottish punk scene, ex-member of The Freeze and open transgender warrior, has swung from being a band to a solo concern and back again. Philippe Petit, meanwhile, commenced his music career through the running of the highly respected Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp. A musical travel agent creating adventurous soundworlds, who in recent years has been found on a number of labels in collaboration with a number of eclectic artists including James Johnston, Lydia Lunch, K11 and Cosey Fanni Tutti. JAMES JOHNSTON / PHILIPPE PETIT - 'Fiends With A Face' CD (Dirter)
An hommage to the golden era of horror movies. Our two fiends wanted to conjure up blood-curdling and haunting soundscapes, playing with unsettling ambiances in order to create a contemporary soundtrack for those who like to be frightened. Philippe Petit is interested in soundtracks, even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer. James Johnston is the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of influential UK band Gallon Drunk. He also plays with Krautrock legends Faust and was a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from 2003-2008, (originally touring with the band in 1994). K11 & PHILIPPE PETIT - 'The Haunting Triptych' CD (Boring Machines)
The Haunting Triptych is a collaboration between K11 (aka Pietro Ribarbelli) and Philippe Petit. A haunted Drone, Electro-acoustic, Dark ambient soundtrack, giving an impression that some ghosts are lurking around… dragging listeners inside a world full of malevolent creatures. Three long drones full, not unlike some works of Lustmord or Nurse With Wound, the sound is heavy and claustrophobic and the downward spiral brings you to the final end, where the last sound you hear before losing your senses is the beast eating your flesh. Over 45mins of music in a spot-varnished ecosleeve.
LYDIA LUNCH & PHILIPPE PETIT - 'In Comfort' Picture Disc LP (Comfortzone)
This is the second time in less than 12 months we've found Petit working with an (in)famous female vocalist, trailing last years chilling 7" with Cosey Fanni Tutti, and this outing is no less unnerving. 'Return To Backworld' is a sombre instrumental opener for piano and glitched electronics, before 'Requiescat In Comfort' introduces Lydia's croaked vocal over droning, discordant strings and bleak, glooming drones. The centrepiece is surely the sumptuous ten minute composition 'Black Spring', entering a nether region of slowly waking symphonic strings and 4th world ambience woven around Lydia's dystopian narrative. SIMON WHETHAM & FRIENDS - 'Meditations On Light' 2 x CD (Monochrome Vision)
In 2009 Simon Whetham was commissioned by painter Kathryn Thomas to compose a surround sound composition and installation to accompany her Darkspace project, a series of paintings inspired by the infinity of the cosmos, which was exhibited as part of her biggest solo exhibition to date, 'Lightyears'. The composition was mixed down to a stereo version, mastered by Scanner, and released on Simon's own label, Traceable Echoes, for the exhibition. Simon reworked the raw materials of 'Lightyears', as he felt the brief was very restrictive, and wanted to hear the results of using the same material without these constraints. He also offered the opportunity to artists, who produced their own characteristic interpretation of the composition: Christopher McFall, David Wells, Fourm, Iris Garrelfs, John Kannenberg, Lawrence English, Maile Colbert, Mise En Scene, Philippe Petit, Richard Lainhart, Scanner and Yann Novak. A common thread is evident, but very individual voices are heard, leading you on an immersive, engaging journey... Ltd x 500 copies.
