Arc ARC - 'Arkhangelsk' CD (Epidemie)

(2008) ARC is a Canadian trio (Aidan Baker, Richard Baker & Christopher Kukiel), playing tribal guitar drone ambient with psychedelic and post-rock elements and a very hypnotic sound. "Arkhangelsk" was recorded in Toronto, Canada in December 2007 in two separate sessions. The first consisted of improv performances on drumset and guitar. The second consisted of layering percussion, electronics, and woodwind tracks on those original drum / guitar tracks. Both sessions were made in real-time in single takes with minimum post-production editing or manipulation in an effort to capture the spontaneity of the performances. "Arkhangelsk" combines influence / inspiration from such artists as Flyer Saucer Attack, The Boredoms, Tribes of Neurot, and Rapoon. Ltd x 600 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve.

Arditi ARDITI - 'Omne Ensis Impera' CD (Equilibrium Music)

(2008) The highly anticipated new album by the Swedish duo (Henry Möller of Puissance and Marten Björkman) is finally upon us. The sense of determination that echoes through their music and which has brought them to the forefront of Martial / Industrial Neo-Classical scene has stayed untouched. “Omne Ensis Impera” introduces an additional strength to Arditi’s compositions - epic orchestral loops and thunderous percussions are granted a more prominent role, stirring the damp and suffocating ambiance that the duo have always produced so well with their use of ominous synths, obscure speeches and mesmerizing narrations. “Omne Ensis Impera” could well be a modern interpretation of the Futurist’s goal of glorifying warfare to an artistic expression beyond its inherent violence and intrinsic sense of heroism. Mastered by Kamrat Nordvargr (Mz.412, Toroidh etc), who also contributed to additional arrangements on a couple of tracks. Presented in a deluxe glossy Digipak, with embossed artwork.

Clear Water / Baishui CLEAR WATER (BAISHUI) - 'Time' CD (Midnight Productions / Oro Prod)

(2008) This work is about the artist's hometown - a small town in the Chinese province of Sichuan... about the memorial arch, which has stood erect for hundreds of years... the bright moonlight on the small bridge over the flowing stream... the cherry blossoms and wild flowers... the elders with their soft voices and laughing faces. 40 minutes of simple and honourable township ballads and folksongs, which have been handed down for generations. An absolutely stunning release, presented in an 8-panel matt digipak with booklet, insert and dried flowers. Like a strange Chinese version of Sturmpercht? All text in Chinese. Ltd x 500.

Oda Relicta ODA RELICTA - 'The Crown & The Plough' CD (Neuropa)

Oda Relicta is the product of one Oleg Kolyada (First Human Ferro / In Meditarium) who recorded 'The Crown & The Plough' with the aid of the Zhytomyr Military Orchestra. 'The Crown & The Plough' is a thoughtful album, overviewing the history of Oleg's motherland, the Ukraine. The album scores the clash between workmen and nobles; where the crown meets the plough! Grandiose Slavonic faithful hymns, orchestral sacred marches and utopian Neofolk nicely meld into a mysterious and refined album - in parts almost medieval / baroque. Highly recommended! Mastered by Henrik Nordvargr Björkk (MZ.412, Toroidh, Folkstorm). First pressing limited to just 300 copies - ACT FAST!

  oro!oro! ORO!ORO! - 'Prarastos Ziemos' CD (Autarkeia)

The pioneer of Lithuanian post industrial, Laurynas (also the composer of Girnu Giesmes), continues his experiments with sonic impact on human mood. "Prarastos Ziemos" ("Lost Winters") is an investigation of winter phenomenon, providing the audience with a translucent, modest and refined ambient masterpiece conveying very precisely the deepest aspects of winter: limitless cleanliness, transparency, serenity and the recreation of existence. The music of the album is also special in that no electronic means were used for its recording. Ambient sounds are produced by harmonica, guitar and archaic zither, which lifts the sound quality of oro!oro! into the entirely new aesthetic level. Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak.

Sally Doherty SALLY DOHERTY & THE SUMACS - 'Black Is The Colour' CD (Tiger Records)

2008 re-issue of this beautiful album, on Sally Doherty's own label. Performing some of the greatest songs of the Folk tradition and giving them totally unique and challenging new interpretations, Sally Doherty (ex-Sieben) has produced a notable album that has obvious Folk elements but also has experimental aspects too. In this, her fifth album, she explores songs from Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain and Mexico as well as a couple of her own that fit beautifully with the traditional classics. Rich atmospheric moods with early French medieval styles mixing with tracks of haunting simplicity and others of lush, dark orchestration. This digitally-remastered album comes with a bonus track and is limited to 500 copies.

The New Blockaders / Thurston Moore / Jim O'Rourke THE NEW BLOCKADERS / THURSTON MOORE / JIM O'ROURKE - 'The Voloptulist' CD (Hospital Productions)

Dream-team hook-up between a trio of the most important free-noise theorists of the modern age: The New Blockaders and Thurston and Jim of Sonic Youth et al. Hard to work out who is doing exactly what here - though the presence of drummer Chris Corsano on the second track is pretty unmistakable - but the overall feel is of one of TNB's early 'Symphonie X' works, populated by thin strings of feedback, the crackle of electronic jack-to-jack friction and a subtle ring of bone. Beautifully eerie and a little more pro-drone than the bulk of TNB's work. The second track is just unbelievable, with a slow hiss of feedback torn apart by Corsano's triumphal, spirit / energy scattershots, marching a legion of ghosts all the way over the horizon. Highly recommended.

Thee Maldoror Kollective THEE MALDOROR KOLLECTIVE - 'Themes For Proxima' MCD (Foreshadow Productions)

With each new release, Italian group Thee Maldoror Kollective crosses the boundaries of avangarde music. Starting with black metal outbursts, they have come trough marriages with industrial, jazz and even opera. On "Themes for Proxima" TMK dive into cold dimensions of brave electronica. Music from this release was used in a Spanish movie production "Proxima", which only enhances its artistic value. Unpredictable and conventional, melodic and deconstructive, calm and frantic. Only a band with such an experience could compose music that is so mature. A bunch of critics have already compared them to ULVER, both in terms of development and breaking all the rules. Just under half an hour of music.
