A CROWN OF LIGHT - 'The Clearing' CD (Eibon Records)
A Crown of Light is a collaborative project between American artists Brandon Elkins (A Crown of Amaranth) and Robert Hunter Osgood (Conversations About the Light). 'The Clearing' is a laid back Dark Ambient record with some experimentation, some Concrete Music soundscapes, and some noisy electronics. But predominantly the album unfolds in a calm, and ominous manner, with various organic samples and vocals limited to just one song. An intriguing project to watch out for.
2009 CD reissue of (ex-Wolf Eyes) Aaron Dilloway's "Chain Shot" LP (2007). 'With only tape loops, metal, and horns (and sometimes, it seems, metal on horns) the two long pieces, 'Chain Shot' and 'Execution Dock' respectively, explore the ugly underbelly of noise before just scraping right through and aiming for the insides. In a genre that has quickly turned into a broad and often inaccurate description of a certain breed of every-man experimental music, Dilloway sticks to the old-fashioned definition of noise, doing battle with the materials in front of him as he continues the construction of his impressive body of work" (Ear Conditioned Nightmare). Contains a 28 minute bonus track. Digipak.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO - 'Hotter Than Inferno: Live In Sapporo 2008' CD (Vivo Records)
"Hotter Than Inferno captures AMT in their fired-up, mainly noisy and wonderfully chaotic live format were spacey keyboards whiz and buzz, guitars singeing with multiple soloing and the rest of the band kick up a hell of a dust storm. The 73 minute set was recorded live in their native Japan on 29 June 2008 at Counter Action, Sapporo and features two long jams... An invigorating, fiery and enjoyable live album" (Musique Machine). Over 70mins of space-psych-prog-rock music featuring tracks from "Journey Into The Cosmic Inferno", "Pink Lady Lemonade...".
Russian post-industrial music from George Beloglazov, who also creates computer games with an unconventional author approach. The action takes place in March 1953 in an abandoned Soviet bunker - a place of strange experiments on the human psyche. The game explores such themes as the limits of mental possibilities, EVP, experiments with thought-transference and impact of fear on the human organism. The game soundtrack, presented on this CD, embodies the project's concept in sound. Imbued with an industrial atmosphere, leisurely soundscapes turn into states of calm estrangement and isolationism. Excursions into the unknown corners of the consciousness bring to its surface old memories and long forgotten yet vaguely familiar images... and laboratorial claustrophobia grows into light melancholia. This musical picture is performed in the trademark style of Anthesteria combining abstract dark ambient, melodic neoclassical and experimental sonic artifacts. Ltd x 500 copies in an A5 gatefold card sleeve with full-colour cards depicting game locations and fragments of a book about mental suggestions from 1962. Finished off in a nice card slipcase.
ARCHON ORCHESTRA - 'Pong' CD (Shadowplay Release / Muzyka Voln / Monopoly Records)
The CD cover of this band's debut album shows a collage with a fragment of a Renaissance painting on which biblical saints look at the "sky" above them and see the game "Pong" being played there (a cult arcade game from 1972, first game by Atari). What could this marvellous picture mean? Let the listener decide. The main instrument on this CD is the organ, in fast mechanical sequences, typical for the Berlin school of electronic music. Simple compositional structure meets vivid expression, liturgical atmosphere and a sublime metaphysical line running through the whole concept of the project. Archon Orchestra deal with clearly structured music lying in the intermediate plane between the so called 'holy minimalism' and 'repetitive music'. Recommended for lovers of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Recoil ("Hydrology").

ATARAXIA - 'Concerto No. 6: A Baroque Plaisanterie' CD (Twilight Records)
Reissue of Ataraxia's 1996 album (Apollyon), remastered with an exclusive bonus track. Contain 9 songs taken from the original album, plus "Orlando, A Female" from the "Orlando" EP and Ataraxia's version of Franz Schubert's 'Ave Maria'. "Concerto No. 6" was inspired by Ataraxia's admiration for the stylistic canons of Baroque music, a music that incessantely pursued an aesthetical-formal elegance that was sometimes the mirror of an inner beauty. A deeply felt tribute to the Music Maestros of the past, a suffered research in the profound meaning of music, a personal homage to the impressive film of A. Corneau "Tous les matins du Monde", a dialogue between our earthly dimension and the ones we belong before being born and after death, an individual contribution to the Baroque harmonies and age, a subtle balance between formal beauty, passion and spontaneity, a singular excursion in the purity of sound. The cello, piano and synth sound more atmospheric and dreamlike. The voice sounds like the breath of the forest, hanging over the music and leading the listener into dreamy landscapes. "Itineris I" is an initiatory journey through the most evocative romanticism. BIRDS BUILD NESTS UNDERGROUND & MY CAT IS AN ALIEN - 'Gramofonu = Voice Of The Universe' LP (Love Nest / Opax)
The first meeting of two improv acts, Prague-based turntable & 8mm band Birds Build Nests Underground and Italian psychedelic troubadours My Cat Is An Alien. Two different approaches to music make a sound that takes both from the unknown realms of the outer space and from the somehow-well-known world of old cracking records and the music and sounds on them. BBNU provided some of their live improvisations, MCIAA then chose those close to their hearts and laced them with sounds of guitars, space toys & ray guns, wordless singing and alientronics. Never has music of the spheres crackled so nicely. As if the whole galaxy lies on a giant turntable. The record starts with an exciting, ecstatic and excellent improvised speech by a Czech avant-garde poet Vtezslav Nezval who sees the whole world through his glass and the glass in the window of a recording studio. BOY DIRT CAR - 'Spoken Answer To A Silent Question' CD (Aftermusic)
The Milwaukee Noise ensemble Boy Dirt Car (including Eric Lunde) issues its first new recordings since 1988. Many of you will know the name from their appearances on RRRecords. "... I keep thinking to recognize the old Boy Dirt Car, but there is also strong memories of Impact Test [BDC member Darren Brown]. It's not easy to pin this down, but rock drone would come close I think. Slow, peaceful organ loops, heavy bass and siren like sounds, make this balancing on the fine line of ambient industrial and 'real' industrial, although this comes nowhere close to the real noise. Hard to imagine that eight (!) people play on this work. It's both retro sounding as well as new, this can be a true example for everybody who love their lo-fi noise / drone / rock music of the younger generation" [FDW]. Digipak.

CONTROL - 'The Means To An End' CD (Eibon Records)
Redefining the concept of aural aggression. Structured, multi-layered, hyper-complex Power Noise. Sharp like a surgical scalpel and powerful like a demolition hammer, the music of Thomas Garrison's Control adds a new meaning to the abused "Power Electronics" definition. The only good way to describe "The means to an end"? A fierce beast constrained (temporarily...) in a steel cage, far too small to contain its natural aggressiveness. The cage won't last forever...
It is difficult for a listener to step away from the narrative concept behind Conure's previous CD ("The Generation of Our Grandfathers") and just immerse oneself in the sounds. With his new work, Mark Wilson utilises non-musical themes in a different manner in order to allow that immersion. Themes run throughout the five tracks of "Stream", but this time the themes were used primarily as building blocks rather than as the focus of the CD. His new creation is rawer than previous works, while still retaining their compositional strengths. The music, constructed primarily from field recordings and other mic'ed sound processed through effects pedals, is probably the closest that Conure has come to reproducing the sound of his live performances in the studio environment. Ltd x 550 copies.

CYCLOTIMIA - 'Sci-Fi Music (Soundtrack To A Nonexistent Movie)' CD (Shadowplay Release / Zhelezobeton / Monopoly Records)
As the title suggests, the new work by the Russian masters of electronic soundscapes represents a score to an imaginary sci-fi movie. The musicians are admirers of old-school Sci-Fi / Cyberpunk genres and for a long time they have felt a desire to make some music inspired by soundtracks of sci-fi blockbusters from 1970-80s... Spaceship battles, alien colonies, teleportation and mysterious droid ceremonies are only part of the images created by this music. The album contains both dynamic rhythmic "hits" and disturbing space ambient as well as avant-garde neoclassical pieces. Ltd x 500 copies.
"Styx" is the most mainstream work in the Cyclotimia discography. The music is free of their usual experimental and academic explorations; here the emphasis is made on the rhythms. Eleven compositions depict the sickly technogenic reality of the planet wrapped by networks of global capital, media glamour and ideological obsessions. In ancient Greek mythology the Styx was the embodiment of primeval dread and gloom, from which the first living creatures emerged. This was a personification of the underworld river whose pestilent currents seclude life from death. Similarly to this mythic river, currents of credits, percent, funds, financial quotations, capital issues, barrels of oil and advertising spaces flow on the Cyclotimia album to the accompaniment of hard, sterile and atmospheric electronic music. Recommended for fans of Skinny Puppy, Clock DVA, Laibach, Front Line Assembly. Ltd x 500 copies.

INORGANIC BLOSSOMING - 'Seasons Project: Autumndrones' CD (Infinite Fog Productions / Vegvisir Music / 7Hz Records)
'Autumndrones' is a name which belongs to two musicians from Siberia - Becoming and Freeall. 'Autumndrones' - can be explained as a love of autumn. They did not want to dedicate the music to this season, they wanted to write it. Therefore they music was written during the fall only, and when the first autumn passed they left the unfinished material until the next one. That is why the work took them 3 years. The whole mood of the album went through this season, even live instruments, such as violin and accordion, were recorded in fields along with the leaves' noise. The sound of nature and the human together. Mild ambient, careful noise and accidental melodies, the mix of leaves rustling, wind blowing and analogue synths singing. Ltd x 292 copies in a handmade A5 digipak.
JAHRTAL - 'William Blake - Lieder Von Unschuld Und Widerfahren' CD (Ahnstern)
This is the second album by the Austrian Psychedelic-Folk artist Jahrtal. The man behind Jahrtal is Ewald Spiss, a artist from Tyrol, who started doing electro-acoustic music and sound-installations in the early 80s. Jahrtal today is authentic psychedelic Folk music, maybe only comparable with In Gowan Ring. The lyrics of the second album are poems of "Songs Of Innocence and Of Experience" by the English poet William Blake (1757-1827), translated by Ewald Spiss, as near as possible to the original Blake-texts.
Jazzkammer's Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre, captured live in Singapore in 2003, during the height of the SARS epidemic. "This CD sees them playing with noise and feedback, despite the use of some water sounds and short outbursts of rhythmical elements. For the bigger part it's still Merzbow influenced noise music" (Vital). 20 minutes of beautiful broken sounds and horrendous feedback! Comes in a beautiful little gatefold digifile.

JAZZKAMMER - 'Sound Of Music' 3" CD (OHM Records)
"The title of this Jazzkammer (Lasse Marhaug / John Hegre) release is a very nice reference to their tactics: they create sound out of music. With the help of electronic equipment and a guitar, they blast their way through definitions of the term that shocks so many. This little disc leaves no questions about Jazzkammer's intentions: they want noise and they'll make it happen. In twenty minutes time they offer the whole spectrum of the genre as we know it: fierce rumbles, glitches, hisses and piercing tones. And not to forget: some looped melodic elements, heavily distorted and, more often than not, buried under an avalanche of other noise... Way to go!" (Vital). Comes in a little gatefold digifile.

JOHN HEGRE / LASSE MARHAUG / HELGE STEN - 'The Comfort Of Objects' CD (OHM Records)
A one-shot collaboration CD recorded over two years, where the three artists (John Hegre of Origami Replika and Jazzkammer, John Hegre of Der Brief and Jazzkammer and Helge Sten of Deathprod) reworked the same source material, not knowing what the others would do with it - resulting in three very different solutions. From the intense and loud to the subtle and beautiful, "The comfort of objects" is Norwegian electronic music at its best.

KADAVER - 'The Moon Bares Teeth - Special Edition' CD (Paranoise Records)
Apocalyptic doom noise from Israel. "The Moon Bares Teeth" is a tale of apocalypse in three acts with a prologue (a Jewish biblical ceremony for the departed) and a finale (a call for blood and death). Minimal structured noise layered on deep subsonic frequency rumble leading to a dark tunnel of screaming hopelessness and destruction, creating a misanthropic feel that leaves you alone in the decay of human being. It ends with final breaths. This is no music. This is cancer. It's the total emptiness of existence, the message of doom. Ltd x 100 copies in special cardboard package!

KALLABRIS - 'Music For Very Simple Objects' 10" (Substantia Innominata / Drone Records)
Maybe the most mysterious and thought-provoking German experimental project with recordings derived from field recordings so bizarre it's difficult to find any words for it! This work features very short sequences of concrete sounds, arranged in a structural and temporal way that the "known reality" is placed in a new frame and context, thus making it possible that the world behind may become "visible" through our acoustic senses. What is usually familiar is suspended in order to make new experiences. The acoustic elements have been configured in a certain causal formation which is not consciously perceivable within the phenomenal order. The phenomenon hides the principle & substance of the sound-pieces. Limited to 500 copies on fluorescent green coloured vinyl, with a full colour sleeve designed by Andreas Mal Hoeschen.

LASSE MARHAUG & MARK WASTELL - 'Kiss Of Acid' CD (Monotype Records)
In recent years Lasse Marhaug has almost become synonymous with Scandinavian Noise. From his camp in Trondhem, Norway, he's been launching release after release with brutal noise both under his real name and with groups such as DEL and parts of the Origami Republika projects. London-based sound artist and composer Mark Wastell builds enormous atmospheres on the Tam Tam (here recorded at an abandoned school in Norfolk) with very little actual movement. Wastell's music is dark, deep and beautiful. Slow movements build up sonic pulses that are able to take over rooms and buildings. Together the duo have created over 40 minutes of drone / dark ambient. Gatefold ecopak.

Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple, Tsurubami), Yoshida Tatsuya (Acid Mothers Temple, Ruins, Zeni Geva) and Asahito Nanjo (High Rise). Mainliner Sonic merrily operates under the principle that nothing is not worth doing if not done in ways that make amplifiers sound like they are melting rapidly. Which is something that can be said about a variety of such groups from Japan, but with Makoto Kawabata credited as playing "motor psycho guitar", one can rest assured that it's probably going to sound pretty good! Mainliner find grooves and throttle them until they bleed, with acid freakout chaos. Ltd x 500 copies . Chinese import.

'Psychoide' is a "gorgeous soft cacophony of epic post rock drift", while 'Participation Shift' has "deep soft swells of shimmering warmth and distant bits of industrial clatter, a slow burning ambient drift that is eventually joined by a simple motorik rhythm". The latest work from Dutch composer Michel Banabila. Some of the recordings arose from earlier mix-versions of tracks originally made for the dance performance ZOUT, by Conny Janssen Danst & Anne Soldaat. MUSIIKKIVYORY - 'Tulemme Sokeiksi' CD (Ektro Records)
"Tulemme sokeiksi" ("We're Becoming Blind") is a retrospective CD by Musiikkivyory ("music avalanche"). In addition to being a curious chapter in the endless saga of the post-punk era, this DIY document is also one of the finer, more elusive threads of the cassette-culture scene. Originally issued in 1981, Musiikkivyory's two tapes were the work of Mika Taanila, a 15-year-old who would grow up to become an internationally acclaimed filmmaker. This CD features the key tracks from those micro-edition recordings. Musiikkivyory's output is typical of the early 80s raw zeitgeist, but with a timeless, teen-anguish twist. Taanila heartily embraces punk's total do-it-yourself ideal, yet his style is light years away from the conventional guitar groups of the day: Atonal riffs, home electronics, randomly cut-up radio sounds, noise and primitive industrial weltschmertz blend into a rough, highly personalised whole.

OSCILLATING INNARDS - 'Nadir Emergence' CD (Troniks / Iatrogenesis Records)
"Nadir Emergence" is the second full-length from Oscillating Innards; a document of the recurring and parallel themes of artistic/romantic failure and the forces of insignificance and degradation. Encompassing and hybridising elements of electroacoustic harsh noise, deliberate tonal studies, atmospheric drone collage and severe power electronics, "Nadir Emergence" is a dense and breathing environment of evocative sound and lyrics, steeped in continually growing and failing tones, recurring and degrading melody, and vehement sentiment. This is deeply personal music of smoldering roots and crumbling achievement; the secret infidelity and defeat of timbre. Ltd x 1000 copies.
On "Horizonal / Vertical" "the wondergirl of Finnish experimental music" presents deep waving droning noises, set against vortexing echoes and swirling digital effects, derived from what could be instrumental sources or object recordings, moving the willing listener into a surrealistic subconscious dimension. PAS - 'Pure Energy Output Sessions' CD (PAS Records)
NYC experimentalists PAS (Post Abortion Stress) is a group out to create musical collages through the form of abstract sound. Their name refers metaphorically to those who have been aborted by society, because their point of view doesn't fit in the constraints of 'normal' society. The short name refers to the negative in French, metaphorically negating everything that is established to start from a new beginning. The band create soundscapes underpinned by the notion that music can be whatever the ear perceives... a conception fueled by the love of life and art. The compositions themselves are more akin to soundscapes than 'songs' in the traditional sense. There are no clearly defined melodies, no structural landmarks that give you any sense of traditional anchor. Sonic sculptures in the mode of pure art. 6-panel digisleeve.

PEPE WISMEER - 'Musi' LP (Equation Records)
Pepe Wismeer is a duo from the Champagne-Ardennes region of France, who have been making their own unique brand of music since 1999. The music on this LP moves with patient strides, sometimes swelling to sudden crescendos, accompanied by electronic scrapes and coughs. A slightly damaged, spare, chamber folk-psych, whose distant cousins can be found in the darkly tender moments infused in early Psychic TV / Current 93 / Coil, or in the atmospheric postures of Antony & the Johnsons. The music is mainly structured around piano and voice accompanied by electric-acoustic guitar, bass, concrete sounds, samples, sitar, metallophone… sheep, birds, water and glass. All music was recorded on analogue equipment to add warmth to the icy atmospheres. Ltd x 100 hand-numbered copies with insert.

PHARAOH OVERLORD - 'Siluurikaudella' CD (Ektro Records)
Pharaoh Overlord - masters of rigid hypnotic riffing and overlords of rock 'n' roll repetition - surprise everybody on their latest offering by propelling themselves head first into three lengthy surreal partitures. Instead of the familiar avalanche of distortion and metronome-like drumming, "Siluurikaudella" offers a sound that has been stripped of all traces of rock music. Has the ever-present riff disappeared? Is it still buried somewhere beneath the unpredictable textures woven by three guitars, drums and bass? Are the results too obscure for rockers? Too avant-garde for jazz connoisseurs? For fans of Finnish stoner / space / psych rock ala Circle.

PHELIOS - 'Astral Unity' CD (Malignant Records)
Third album from Germany's revered dark ambient project Phelios, following two CDs on Eternal Soul and a recent split LP on Loki Foundation with Kammarheit. With its swirling cosmic drones and sweeping, cinematic drift, the music of Phelios is breathtaking and hypnotic, often evoking moments of serenity and beauty, yet spiking them with deep cushions of ritualistic percussion and textural squalls that suggest something much more ominous and threatening looms on the vast horizon. Collectively, "Astral Unity" is thoughtful and concise - a vivid and richly detailed entity that's alive and constantly evolving, channeling the universe while simultaneously exploring the inner regions of a more primordial earth. 6 panel digipak, with gold foil stamping.

"Love And Madness" reflects Quimera’s unique style of Classical-Baroque, Gothic and Symphonic sounds, carefully crafted into powerful music that is paired with lyrics of deep meaning. The artist states "Love And Madness is more than my debut album, it is my own revelation of love, fear, hope, and the touch of madness which I believe is inherent within all powerful feelings. I want my music to inspire others, to take them places in their minds, and maybe even help them go through whatever difficult thing they may be going through, perhaps things they can’t even speak about to anyone. RISING SHADOWS - 'Finis Gloriae Mundi' CD (Twilight Records)
"Finis Gloriae Mundi" is the third album from Rising Shadows. Once again the beautiful voice of Linda-li enriches the mysterious and complex musical textures created by Fredrik Klingwall. The Swedish duo now goes well beyond their neoclassical and medieval roots and leave the boundaries of a genre. Together with co-producer Mattias Olsson and several session musicians they explore new layers of instruments and rhythms in their music. "Finis Gloriae Mundi" is the soundtrack to a great finale, inspired by the curiosity of death and transmutations of our reality. The result is yet another haunting melancholic masterpiece.
RISING SHADOWS - 'Found In The Cold' CD (Twilight Records)
With "Found In The Cold", Rising Shadows explores a colder and more distorted, harsh landscape than before, yet still holding up the ethereal beauty with the voice of Linda-li. Lyrically and musically the album is a continuation of the themes from "Falling Deep Within". The dreamy, folk inspired songs are still there with the dark lyrics of a journey through life into death and the catharsis in between. Rising Shadows speak about the world of imagination all of us have in mind; a possible world, full of tales, fantastic creatures and beautiful landscapes. A fantastic journey through the mystical world of faeries, wizards and gnomes. Try to search your lost and sad princess into the deep and dark forest of Scandinavia. Imagine a mix of Dead Can Dance, Ennio Morricone and Kate Bush and you'll getting closer to the sound of Rising Shadows! Digipak.

ROTHKO - '291' 7" (Zeal Records)
Rothko are a UK 3-piece who employ a unique approach to ambient music. All three members play electric bass and often utilise a handful of effects to alter the bass guitar sound to otherworldly rumbles and pulses. Their songs wander between intertwining bass melodies and washes of sound. "291," is comprised of simple meandering bass melodies, with a set verse, chorus, verse structure. The parts themselves sound very open and freeform, which gives the song a spacious feel, like their tone collages, despite the absence of any ambient noises. The B-side, "St. Seno" combines soundscape with melody. The end result is fairly similar to the A-side but much easier to grab onto. Droning waves of sound provide a full backdrop for the simple harmonies of the two bass guitar parts. Faint clinking of bells and sound loops playing backwards create a dream-like ambience which smears the song into a short, to the point, bliss out.

SKROL - 'New Laws / New Orders' CD (Twilight Records)
The return of one of the most amazing industrial acts! The conception of of Czech ensemble Skrol arose from the visions of its spiritual father Vladimír Hirsch in autumn 1995, when he was joined by Martina Sanollová-Sweeney and Tom Saivon. Skrol employ original principles of composition, with the added depth of classical influences. Their inspiration derives mainly from Slavic melodic and harmonic systems. "New Laws / New Orders" was originally an instrumental suite of Vladimír Hirsch, created in 2000, later reworked alongside some unreleased pieces from 1996-1999. Skrol's majestic and uncompromising music is based on specific melodiousness and orchestration of contemporary neoclassical music, situated in the arch of industrial ambient and brutalised by noises and modern technological sounds. Presented in an 8-panel DVD-size digipak, designed by Jerome Nougaillon (Propergol), "Divine Legions" represents STROM.ec at their finest, most creative form, having reached a pinnacle in an already illustrious discography.
This mystic techno trio from Frankfurt delivers us four new tracks, as well as a remix of 'Isis'. These five tracks are a beautiful kind of mid-paced strange techno. It has the melody and the flow of trance, but features a lot of sounds from more industrial releases. Every tune is very carefully created and integrate itself very well in an orchestra of percussions and slow analog progressions. The recording is noiseless, and the samples of Genesis P. Orridge and Aleister Crowley's voice get along very well with the music. A recommended release for fans of the collectable Ant-Zen or Hymen labels. Ltd x 666 copies only!

THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part I: Swirling Lands Of Disquiet And Catharsis' CD (Ahnstern / Steinklang)
The Joy of Nature is a project from the Azores (a group of 9 islands between Europe and North America, belonging to Portugal). Musically, "The Joy of Nature" is like a serpent - always renewing itself, never resting in one shape, changing form but keeping the same essence. 'Swirling Lands of Disquiet and Catharsis' is the first part of a trilogy entitled 'The Empty Circle'. This first part corresponds to Nigredo. This album is about a world of disquiet, in which a catharsis should be done. To gather the impurities, realise their nature and build something pure from there. The music follows the concept - there are elements of Folk, Ambient, Psychedelic and Experimental music, mixed in a coherent way, creating a unique sound and a breathtaking atmosphere, predominantly acoustic and with dark tones.
THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part II: Rastos De Sangue E Fragmentos Da Tradicao' CD (Ahnstern)
The second part of the trilogy "The Empty Circle" by The Joy of Nature reflects and gathers fragments of the Perennial Tradition. Naturally, it is also about the Spiritual inheritance of the Portuguese ancestors. Musically, it's the most song-orientated The Joy of Nature release until now, with its roots in the folk tradition of rural Portuguese regions, especially the Azores. The album is not just a Folk-album, it also has several amazing psychedelic moments. Features collaborations with R. Coutinho, B. Ardo (Sangre Cavallum), Rui Almeida (Massa Última), Triarca, Mara Neves and M.J. Over an hour of music.
THE MEMORIES ATTACK - 'LP2' CD (Tumult / Noyes Records)

Every track here is some glorious strain of perfect pop, whether it's a chunk of old school college rock jangle, a burst of synth infused almost metal crunch, wild wooly lo-fi garage-y stomp, or hushed intimate bedroom pop, it's all so catchy and rocking and irresistible. And it's all held together by some sort of mysterious pop music magic that few have mastered and even fewer understand, but which never fails to totally and utterly entrance every time.

Hungarian act Thy Catafalque was born in 1998 as an epic black metal band. Since that time it has progressed to its actual, very original music that can be described as avant-garde post black metal / ambient / folk. Founders Tamás Kátai and János Juhász invited nine other musicians as guests to record a very unusual 70-minute album. Hungarian male vocals are complimented by the beautiful ethereal female voice of guest singer Ágnes Tóth (The Moon and the Nightspirit). 2nd edition in jewelcase

TO BLACKEN THE PAGES / KORPERSCHWACHE - 'A Way Dark' 2 x CD (Colony Records)
"A Way Dark" is a bold work from two of the most pioneering blackened noise guitar musicians working today: Texas-based Korperschwache and Dublin's To Blacken the Pages. From lighter, shoegaze inspired tracks, to harder, more abstract compositions, and of course exploring the juxtaposition of each artist's extreme guitar work. The album was a chance for both musicians to challenge other – each taking turns to suggest themes and ideas, for example each working with drum patterns and guitar structures, RKF (Korperschwache) often providing a sonic wall of drone while Paul McAree (To Blacken the Pages) would blaze guitar solos over the top. Irish import.

ULTRASOUND - 'Death Comes From The Left' 7" (Drone Records)
Coming originally from Texas, the trio ultrasound (partly ex-Stars Of The Lid) are now located in Den Haag, Netherlands, and Texas, USA. With this, their first ever 7", they present two unbelievable emotional touching pieces of guitar and bass-drone-music, where long echoes of overtone guitar-sounds melt in one stream of pure sensible acoustics. Ultrasound submerges the listener into a deep salty sea to float on the frail border between air and water, light and reflection, perception and knowing. This is pure yearning transformed into sounds. Second edition of 300 copies on clear vinyl in a clear sleeve with sticker.

VA - 'Drinking The Goat's Blood' CD (Record Label Records)
Focusing on sound design and atmosphere, consider "Drinking The Goat's Blood" experimental, but not in the typical sense of noise, ambient or improvisational music. Rather, it is a series of often disparate elements that have been lovingly arranged and ritualistically hewn into a seamless psychedelic pastiche. The cast: 10-20, Ata Ebtekar, Candle Labra, Claroscent Dray, Column One, Contagious Orgasm, Dalglish, Fluorescent Grey, Jacob Jarnigon, Koyxen (Kouhei Matsunaga), Mike Dunkley, Nommo Ogo, Sean Niesen, Senryl, Tomoroh Hidari, Upside Down Umbrella, Wisp and Wobbly (2 tracks). VA - 'The Ring / The Ring Two O.S.T.' CD (Decca Records)
This CD collects together the soundtracks to remakes of the Japanese cult "Ringu" movies from the 1990s: "The Ring" (2002) and "The Ring Two" (2005). Together Hans Zimmer, Henning Lohner and Martin Tillman have created some of the most powerful and bone-chilling film music of recent years. Delving deeper into the supernatural more than the usual horror film soundtrack, this score executes the terror build-up precisely with the use of piano, violin, synthesizer and duelling cellos played by Martin Tillman and Anthony Pleeth. This urban legend comes to life exposing raw emotion by brewing up a sense of mystery, horror and helplessness for the moviegoer.
Reissue of Velnias' 2008 album. The music of Illinois based blackened doom outfit Velnias can be best described as a combination of sorrowful black metal with a very doomy atmosphere, combined with elements of folk. With three lengthy songs, the emphasis has been laid upon a musical foundation of progressive yet feral riffs, intertwining with delicate passages that only make the heavier parts that much more potent. Combined with lyrical content based upon the premise that the human race is insignificant compared to the grand power and prestige of nature this is a debut album that should not be dismissed! File next to Opeth, Agalloch or Wolves In The Throne Room. Ltd x 400 copies on black vinyl.

VINTERRIKET - 'Horizontmelancholie' CD / DVD DualDisc (Heimatfolk)
Vinterriket was born in 1996 as a one-man project in order to capture the dark side of nature. "Horizontmelancholie" features 7 tracks full of coldness, melancholy and chilling atmospheres. The whole record is a pure tribute to the darkest side of mother nature. Haunting and cold electronic soundscapes are mixed with atmospheric acoustic guitars and clean vocals. This is a conceptual album; a masterpiece of haunting and evocative aural tapestries, an emotive display of tension and calm. A darkened imagery of shadowed forests and expansive still landscapes. Join the journey into the deepest side of the forest and get lost in misty, snow-covered hills and majestic mountain landscapes. The whole album is featured as music CD and DVD on one disc. WALDCHENGARTEN - 'The Leech' 7" (Drone Records)
Wäldchengarten is a Danish duo that could be best described as “noise ambient” or “raw / harsh drone”. After some already very promising releases, this is their first vinyl. The music on 'The Leech' is very raw and filled with tiny noisy outbursts, at the same time ultra-sluggish and powerful. Low whistling feedback and pure electronic whirl-tones are omnipresent, everything seems to gradually sink to an alien centre of heavy gravity. This is dark, but its a darkness of sheer beauty. WELTER IN THY BLOOD - 'Through The Fields Of Mourning' CD (Shadowgraph Records)
Welter In Thy Blood is a three piece Black Funeral Doom band emerging from Los Angeles in 2007 with the intent of giving a soundtrack to human extinction. The elegies of Welter In Thy Blood speak of their virulent hate of human existence and the lauding of death and solitude. Revealed through a staggering funeral cadence and guttural ululations is a feeling of absolute torment and despondency. Like a putrid mass for an unholy God. Welter In Thy Blood musically coalesced self mutilation and misanthropy with the urge for voluntary human extinction, coining the term "Suicide is a Virtue". Not for the weak or feeble, this is music for the slightly deranged and the disturbed. Ltd x 1000 copies in a 6-panel digipak with artwork by Kevin Yuen (TenHornedBeast, Sunn O))) etc).

WERKRAUM - 'Early Love Music' CD (Ahnstern / Steinklang)
14 progressive and traditional, psychedelic and medieval folk songs and chants of early love. 14 dreamy memories of the merry blue days from early times. With "Early Love Music" the German Folk musician Axel Frank sets a surpassing milestone for the new generation of Folk artists. A year after releasing his quite Martial / Neoclassical oriented debut on Cold Spring (CSR49CD), Axel got heavily involved with Alpine Folk heroes Sturmpercht and found his love in late 60s / early 70s Psych / Prog Folk music, thus changing his own direction, with the highly successful MCD 'Kristalle'. The complex arrangements and large variety of instruments even remind of The Incredible String Band and some early Acid-Folk bands. "Early Love Music" brings 2 cover versions: Donovan's ingenious fairytale "Jabberwocky" and traditional folk hit "The Blacksmith". Features collaborations with Changes, Lady Morphia and Sturmpercht. Dark music pioneer Wilt bridges the gaps between industrial, drone, noise and experimental. Avant mystics of the modern day, Wilt continue to create endless landscapes of mystery and isolation juxtaposed against depression and decay. Horchata focus on four major elements: complex beat music, dark ambient soundscapes, programmed compositional glitch music and field recordings. Geomancy is a study of the interconnection between the human consciousness and the energy of the earth. Geomancy is focused on sacred geometry, the way that spirit integrates into matter - by echoing and amplifying the geometry of nature and planetary movements. The sonic resonance of body / mind / spirit with the harmonic frequencies of the cosmic above and the earthen below. Maximizing the possibility of connection to the One. WOLF & WINTER - 'When The Cold Earth Rests In Silence' CD (Twilight Records)
Wolf & Winter's second album is still in the vein of their first album's raw black metal, but moves a step forward into depressive black metal, combining ambient strings and bombastic drums from the first pagan metal and using a grimmer repertoire of black metal vocals. Not quite post black metal, it uses some elements of this genre to combine the first age of Bathory and Hellhammer with Ulver, Burzum and even Agalloch. To stand in the roots of primitive and raw music is why this second album does not completely move forward into a more modern concept of black metal, but this doesn't mean it's stuck in the past. This way, the music gains more solidness and independence in a genre which has been so done, so constructed, so reconstructed and at last, so repeated. Digipak.
WOLF EYES With JOHN WIESE - 'Collection' CD (Hanson Records)
A collection of the Wolf Eyes with John Wiese 7" plus two EPs originally released in very limited editions on American Tapes in 2003-04. Digitally re-mastered by Wiese and finally available all together! "Combined into one ugly genetic mishap and flesh hacked covered package by Aaron Dilloway's Hanson label, this is a disintegrated release full of blossoming black sounds... The sheer breadth of textures and styles that they have used is nothing short of astounding... Scattered between exploring inner worlds and blowing-out corneas through riotous frequency changes, this is the place where digits are bent from their 0 and 1 roots into self-adapting cyborg sinews. Elements like stuck groove bell work, tape machine cloud cover and delicate looped horns seem like perfectly constructed movements, musical conclusions of thirty minutes of sweaty improv work". WOLFSKIN feat. LAST INDUSTRIAL ESTATE - 'Stonegates Of Silence' CD (Malignant Records)
And so the journey formally ends for Wolfskin, 15 years from whence it began with the release of "The Hidden Fortress" cassette back in 1995. The essence of Wolfskin has transformed and mutated throughout the years, reaching on "The Stonegates of Silence" it's simpler form… one of desolation, solitude, insanity and death, the final frontiers of human existence. As he did with "The Hidden Fortress: A Revisitation" CD, Wolfskin once again pairs up with Anders Peterson of Objekt4 fame, now operating under the name of Last Industrial Estate for the purposes of this recording. This is Wolfskin at its bleakest and most restrained, offering 5 tracks of enveloping ambience built around foggy, ambiguous textures and an endless flow of drifting isolationism, shapeless horrors, and oppressive subterranean heaviness. In the case of Stonegates, Wolfskin goes out not with a bang, but with a slow, evolutionary creep into the shadows, forever etched in the lexicon of dark ambient music. Digipak.
Brand new material by this cult project from the US, working with deep e-bass sounds to create an isolationist mass of darkest cosmic ambience, a kind of "black hole" ur-drone. When you put this on you are immediately touched by the cold breath of an amorph "otherness". This sound is so monumental and complex that it seems to suspend not only the mind but also the physis, and you experience intensely that both are the same anyway. There's something in this music that lets you really shiver and feel levitated at the same time. Gloriously, the self is dissolving. ZBIGNIEW KARKOWSKI & TETSUO FURUDATE - 'World As Will IV' CD (OHM Records)
"IV" in the 'World As Will' series ("III" Sub Rosa, "II' 23five, "I" Staalplaat). "‘World As Will’ is a work in which Zbigniew Karkowski and Tetsuo Furudate combine orchestral music with computer music - read: noise. At the basis here lie two performances, one for sax, trombone, flute and sine waves and the other for a small ensemble called Sonic Boom. These recordings are slaughtered by the composers during a concert in Tokyo and turned into a racket of noise. Another heavy weight release, with lots of cascading noise samples of orchestral origin spliced on the spot together, fed through the lions of granular synthesis - and who knows what else. Its however in the power of these hands that they know, somewhere in the middle how to pull back and go deeper and deeper into what seems to be the crackling of surfaces with contact microphones, before returning to the world of crashing noise and only to return once more to that somewhat dark underworld, going back up after for a cascading finale. Noise indeed and perhaps I should have left this in the capable hands of Jliat, but this is actually noise of the more intelligent kind" (Vital Weekly). Limited to just 200 copies in a digipak!
