A CROWN OF LIGHT - 'The Clearing' CD (Eibon Records)
A Crown of Light is a collaborative project between American artists Brandon Elkins (A Crown of Amaranth) and Robert Hunter Osgood (Conversations About the Light). 'The Clearing' is a laid back Dark Ambient record with some experimentation, some Concrete Music soundscapes, and some noisy electronics. But predominantly the album unfolds in a calm, and ominous manner, with various organic samples and vocals limited to just one song. An intriguing project to watch out for.
ACCURST - 'A Phantom's Noctuary' CD (Serpene Heli)
Accurst is a solo project from Cypriot artist Adon. This CD (made up of one 43-minute track) explores the nightmares of existence and the horrors of the subconscious through sound and music experimentation. Accurst plays a king of decadent gothic music - full of sinister chimes, gothic organs, threatening vocals and musical experimentation. "A Phantom's Noctuary" is inspired by decadent 19th century literary movements, concepts and ideas. Digipak.

AIN SOPH - 'Oktober' CD & 3" DVD (Old Europa Cafe)
Reissue of Ain Soph's 2002 album with new artwork. The come back of the Roman masters after 10 years! All vocals are in Italian with their usual acoustic instrumentation and their typical keyboard sounds. The songs are similar to their previous album "Aurora", but with an additional rocking electric guitar. Once more a work above all standards. The more unusual industrial project which still works from inside the industrial world. Tales of a Russian soldier during the October revolution. Probably even more surprising than "Aurora". The disc that you have been waiting for. Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak with a bonus 3" DVD.
ANDREW KING & BROWN SIERRA - 'The Kraken' 12" (Dais Records)

Andrew’s studies of ancient English folklore forged with Brown Sierra’s epic electronic noise instrumentation make this release highly anticipated and easily one of the most remembered folk recordings of the past year. ARKHONIA - 'Trails / Traces' CD (White Box)
Arkhonia's "Trails/Traces" fulfils the much promised, but seldom delivered, remit of large portions of ambient music - "to take the listener on a journey". From the deep rumblings of the album's opener to the final decaying notes and crackles of its closing track, all manner of mood-shifting experimentation directs (and occasionally derails) the listener along a sonic path that is at times unnerving and, at others, warmly welcoming. Each piece leads neatly into the next and one would not suspect that this album was assembled from material produced over the span of the last decade - the production values on display in the oldest pieces are qualitatively indistinguishable from the most recent and all are invested with a luscious, finely honed depth of texture. Slow-burning drone constructions for fans of Andrew Chalk, Thomas Koner, Machinefabriek and Alva Noto.
Side-project of IRIKARAH. This LP takes the listener on a delightful journey into sound's wealth and abundance. Most of the album is very soundtrack-oriented with deep and complex dark ritual atmospheres and neo-classical instrumentations. High-tech ambient compositions with some scarce vocal samples. Rich in clear sounds and hypnotizing rhythms. Based on Norse myths. An excellent piece, and only a handful in stock! Limited to just 400 copies.

BLOOD AXIS - 'Born Again' 2 x LP (Storm)
Over the course of the 12 tracks which comprise their 2nd album, "Born Again", Blood Axis explores an epic yet human universe in which gods are summoned, kingdoms rise, riddles are unlocked, love is lost, and worlds crumble. Whereas early Blood Axis music was marked by keyboards and samples, Blood Axis in 2010 is stripped down to an essential core of natural instrumentation - electric and acoustic strings, melodeon, piano, highland bagpipes and Galician gaita, marching percussion, the mysterious Annabel-a-tron, and Bobby BeauSoleil's growling, prison-vintage guitar eruptions circa 1976. Underpinning the album and propelling much of the music is the traditional Irish bodhrán, recorded here with unprecedented power. Moynihan's ominous voice is well matched by Annabel Lee's elfin intonations, just as her violin finds a perfect counterpoint in Robert Ferbrache's protean guitar parts. Shot through by myth and romance, the expressive lyrics on "Born Again" have their roots in ancient and modern poetry, archaic invocations and tragic laments. Both unclassifiable and unforgettable: neither folk nor rock, traditional nor avant-garde, modern nor archaic, it is simply Blood Axis. To everything there is season. For those who are cursed, a time to die and to be forgotten. And for the blessed, a time to be born again: to live on, beyond death, in the minds of men. Now is the time for Blood Axis to be Born Again. Ltd x 700 copies in a stunning 6-panel gatefold sleeve with 12-page full sized booklet.

Second vinyl LP from this formerly active American duo of Will Long and Danielle Baquet-Long. "Vestiges Of An Inherent Melancholy" features 2 sides of unearthed recordings that were created between December 2006 and July 2008. The duo create some truly beautiful drone works with their use of an organic and electronic palette of instrumentation; cello, violin, pipe organ, electronics, tape, field recordings, samples, and mixing board. This really is a standout side from Celer, pulling together their variety of sounds to make a heart breaking collage of sounds falling between beautiful dream tones and heavier dark moments. COMPOUND EYE - 'Origin Of Silence' LP (The Spring Press)
"Origin Of Silence" is the first release by Compound Eye, a long-standing collaboration between Drew McDowall (ex-Coil and Psychic TV) and Tres Warren (Psychic Ills and Messages). These electronic based experimentations employ automatic composition, drone and musique concréte to create subterranean explorations on the nature of signals and time. "This one sort of takes off on a post-Time Machines / Eternal Music vibe but with an exacting minimalist logic that would locate distant Morse Code tones and blurry EVP sightings on the very fringes of liminality. There are vague, nagging melodies that could almost come out of the Goblin / Suspiria song book alongside long passages of single tone narcosis that feel like transports to the other side. The whole recording has that indefinable / occult atmosphere that marked out the more exploratory Coil sides. A beautifully spooked modern minimalist classic, highly recommended." (David Keenan). "Urdarbrunnen" is again a perfecly played, strong and dreamingly beautiful album with a rich, varied instrumentation, even more dense and powerful than the debut album. The musical range lasts from acoustic ballads over Martial Folk songs to dark fairie tales about mysticism, paganism and natural rites in the Alpine regions. "Montauk Project," also called the "Phoenix Project" during some of its phases, was a covert government operation that took place during the '70s and early '80s at an abandoned Air Force radar base in Long Island, New York. Much evidence has surfaced indicating that the base and the subterranean facilities were (and still are) used for top secret, ultra-classified research and experimentation into inter-dimensional technology, quantum and particle physics, black hole simulation, electro-magnetic fields, weather control, psychotronics, particle beam technology (HAARP transmissions), and mind control. GNAW THEIR TONGUES - 'L'Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante - Black' LP (Burning World Records)
Gnaw Their Tongues transcend genres, creating their own distinct sound. Descriptors include ambient black metal, funeral doom metal, industrial drone etc. Instrumentation relies heavily on keyboards and percussion, with the drumming looming in the distance like a hideous parade before a battle is set loose. Monk-like choirs, industrial emanations, bizarre samples, occasional shrieks and droning, abused guitars are all on display, brought together almost unwillingly to share the same stage. Lyrically, L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante is a concept album about death (“morte”). Songs describe the white throne of death, address the song of death and praise death’s majesty and grandeur. For many listeners, "L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante" will be little more than noise or frustratingly dull drone. HALO MANASH - 'Taiwaskivi' CD & DVD (Aural Hypnox)
Halo Manash rises radiant into luminosity, with wings spread into all worlds, and brings forth "Taiwaskivi", an opulent work of solar ambience and primordial Ur-music... a work of sonic flame and aural ash. Seven interrelated tracks, utilising such diverse instrumentation as organ, horns, vocals, drums, gongs, percussion and string instruments as well as field-recordings captured during the pilgrimage that the creation of the work embodies. "Taiwaskivi", although a complete work in itself, can also be viewed as the third and final facet of a tripartite series of works that are part of one holistic creation - a treelogy, with seed, root, trunk and finally, branches. Being the culmination of an ascending journey through the aforementioned realms within and without, "Taiwaskivi" is the celestial crown at the peak, reaching toward Sol, source and beyond; it is the leaves and fruit of the branches and their skyward nectar ever-flowing - the sacred fire, the consummation and conjunction of All. IN SCHERBEN - 'Dort An Jenem Baume...' CD (Lichterklang)
In Scherben's third album is not just the result of their acquired musical maturity, but an affectionate commitment to the concept of "Heimat", which can be experienced in their lyrics and in their musical interpretations of poems by Eichendorff, Nikolaus Lenau and Gottfried Benn. A romantically idealised understanding of 'homeland' and its cultural and social origins is transformed into a groundbreaking declaration of love, dedicated to one's own roots. In Scherben's musical versatility and sparkling instrumentation is far from being restricted to clichés of the genre, but open up new horizons of classically inspired Neofolk, in the tradition of Forseti or Dies Natalis. ION - 'Immaculada' CD (Equilibrium Music)
A collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing light and shade, salvation and loss, matching Irish landscapes and Mediterranean sunbathed seashores with its haunting Celtic vibes that thrive and build upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its 2006 predecessor "Madre, Protégenos", the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step closer to the end of this spiritual quest. Mostly recorded in the Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin, acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound pulse of the percussion. Presented in a beautiful 6-panel digipak with foilblock lettering.
JULIE'S HAIRCUT - 'Our Secret Ceremony' 2 x CD (A Silent Place)
"Our Secret Ceremony" is the fifth album by Julie's Haircut. The record lives on the osmosis of different styles and approaches, from pop to electronica, from psychedelic rock to experimentation, still never lacking in coherence and unity. The first disc has a more classically orientated song structure, accompanied by the second part which has a looser feel. In a way, it's as if there are the two basic aspects of the creative process and, ultimately, of the human existence, living side by side: light and shadow, consciousness and unconsciousness, reality and dream. LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE - 'Duality' CD (4AD)
Duality is at once sacred and playful. It is both dark and light, organic and refined, masculine and feminine. Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard partners with Pieter Bourke, formerly of Aussie band Eden, to create this compositional dance of partnership that is classical, ancient, and thoroughly modern. Gerrard's voice is multi-tracked at times, conjuring a cathedral choir and the droning chants of monks. Drums and synth snake from desert to brilliant stormy sky to shaking earth and the bodies that inhabit those spaces. There are lush multiple layers of strings, bagpipe drone, and, quite literally, the laughter of children. The vocals sans "real" words and multicultural instrumentation will be familiar to Dead Can Dance listeners. Yet there is something more exclusive, more womb-like about the music of Bourke and Gerrard; rather than two distinct bodies making music, like mother and in utero child sharing blood and breath, they are mutually dependent.

Masterful songwriting, ornamented by Castro's ardent vocals and dreamlike lyrics, are relieved by hypnotic instrumental passages. PALE ROSES - 'Fear Of Dawn' CD (The Eastern Front)
Debut album from this French Neofolk act. Ten songs about war, melancholy and the pagan roots of Europe. Two reworked versions of traditional British ballads ('Lord Gregory' and 'Two Ravens') make the album complete. Pale Roses have done their best to keep the instrumentation minimal, stripped down to the core, free of all non-essential arrangements. However, slight variations between songs keep the album from being repetitive. Although Pale Roses are ready to pay their dues to the founders of the Neofolk genre (Sol Invictus, Death In June and Fire+Ice), it is not far off to also mention Nick Drake, Nico or Richard Thompson as influences. The debut on wax from the mysterious Savaging Spires. A stunning 7" featuring 3 tunes of pastoral psych / acid-folk, call it what you will. An utterly addictive EP, broadly split between standard song structured odes to “The Wicker Man” soundtrack or a passing nod to Espers’ druggy edginess and sound collaged passages with a multitude of instrumentation, veering back through harmonious yet freewheeling boy / girl shared vocals. A mysterious, intriguing EP, beautifully packaged on printed inside and out hammer press card, hand numbered with stickers and on white vinyl. Ltd x 400 copies.

SECT - 'Auctoritas' CD (Rage In Eden)
"Auctoritas" is the next phase by Polish project Sect, backed up by Lukasz Maj. The powerful and orchestral instrumentation, which Sect is famous for, was enriched by Lukasz with new accents that have made Sect’s music ascend to a level higher. Sect offers 55 minutes - a long feast for fans who love dark and neoclassical sounds. Additionally, "Auctoritas" is both a derision and disdain for contemporary authorities that were magically covered with sounds. Digipak.

SEKTOR 304 - 'Soul Cleansing' CD (Malignant Records)
Equipped with a frightening and impressive array of primitive instrumentation pulled from junkyards and scrap metal heaps, this Portuguese outfit has delivered an astounding debut - a heady mixture of truly old school industrial in the vein of Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Dept. and S.P.K., and the grinding, bass heavy dirge of vintage Swans and Godflesh. These are anthems to the past, but geared towards an apocalyptic and bleak future… a form of counter-culture using what is most evident in modern western society: the debris, the abandoned objects, the waste, the noise, and the interference. With a solid foundation of rusty, oil drenched percussion, Sektor 304 adds layer upon layer of squalling industrial clangor, hammering metallic noise, grimy atmospheres, heaving masses of haunted factory drones, and threatening tribal batter, with a strong and commanding vocal presence. Anyone into TRUE industrial really should not miss out. 6 panel digipak.

SHIFTS - 'Trees / Leaves' LP (Entr'Acte)
After a decade, this record is Shifts’ probable farewell. Initiated by Frans de Waard (Kapotte Muziek, Freiband, Goem etc and label boss of Korm Plastics) for a ‘soft guitar’ record on Fourth Dimension label in 1995, the project has evolved to include many releases, all distinguished by their singular instrumentation (including two deviations from the guitar - Sonates and Interlude uses the piano, while One Piece for Cymbal has a single cymbal). 'Trees / Leaves' was made with a four-string Spanish guitar de Waard bought for 1 Euro on Koninginnedag (Dutch Queen’s Day) in 2004. Ltd x 200 copies in a heat-sealed sleeve.

SHINJUKU THIEF - 'The Scribbler' CD (Cold Spring CSR62CD)
Reissue of the 1992 classic by this Australian genius, originally released in an edition of 500 copies (Dorobo). Occasional bursts of factory noise, industrial rumblings and disembodied German voices form the backdrop to a minimalist reworking of Kafka's "The Trial." An album of dense filmic atmospheres and orchestral instrumentation. 'The Scribbler' has been digitally remastered and is enhanced with a series of video clips constructed by Richard Grant (I+T=R), incorporating both new material together with the original images prepared for "The Scribbler" live show.
SLUMBERWOOD - 'Yawling Night Songs' CD (A Silent Place)
Debut album from this collective from the North Italian town of Padova, drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Werner Herzog, Coil, Big Star and This Heat. From laptops to tree-tops - and mixing acoustic instrumentation with a twisted brand of psychedelia - Slumberwood developed their own musical language, brewing a weird amalgamation of sounds. "Yawling Night Songs" extracts nature’s many melodies and cacophonies to create a portrait of the heavily romanticised conception of an enchanted European wood as it exists for the youth of the 21st century. A dramatic interpretation of the woods' ambience, leaving a pretty clear sense of what’s hiding in the shadows, waiting to be found. Recorded and produced by Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle). Digifile.

THE HERMAPHRODITIC CHAORDER OF THE SILVER DUSK - '156=Musick=Babalon=Kaos' CD (Zoharum)
An experiment of Process: Magickal Musick recorded by members of The HermAphroditic ChAOrder of the SILVER DUSK - usually in ritual context or with invocational intent - then posted on CD to other member/s in another country for them to add more layers to. This continued progressively until completion. The style of music ranges from neoclassical ambient orchestral multi-instrumental corroborations and layered electronic experimentations to simple primal ritual corroborators with sticks and bells and harmonious voices around a fire by the Hekate Tree. 156 is the number of Babalon, the fiery Thelemic Goddess and also of Kaos, the 7-headed beast on which she rides. Dedicated to and inspired by Coil. Stunning 6-panel digipak with 6 x card inserts.

THE NEW BLOCKADERS - 'Schadenklang' LP (Hypnagogia)
40 minutes of new '30th Antiversary Wreckordings' by TNB on 12" vinyl with full-colour sleeve. TNB have always had a much-more tactile/hands-on approach than most of their noise contemporaries, often favouring junk and industrial debris to actual ‘instrumentation’ and for the ferociously beautiful "Schadenklang" the feel of DIY ritual remains gloriously intact, even as the levels of electro-violence are insanely amplified. For this release The New Blockaders are Richard Rupenus, Michael Gillham and Hal Hutchinson. Numbered limited edition of 350 copies.

THE ONE ENSEMBLE ORCHESTRA - 'Other Thunders' CD (NO-FI)
Daniel Padden’s The One Ensemble began as a solo project and quickly morphed into a quartet with the recruitment of Chris Hladowski, Aby Vulliamy and Peter Nicholson. With Padden’s leadership, they developed a curious and strident brew of Eastern European folk, chamber music, a pinch of Robert Wyatt and some kind of earthy psychedelic primitivism. "...the range on display here is much wider than the typical gypsy / folk-aligned forms on prior one ensemble output ; the beefed-up instrumentation lends an almost Dmitri Tiomkin-ian flair with the massed choir & strings resonating strongly with each other as the band runs through takes ranging from minimal, gestural improv(s) to full-band drones & lurching, sea-shanty lineage ditties... awesome" (Mimaroglu). VULTURES Vs AMPERSAND - 'Vultures Vs Ampersand' CD (Born In Mind)
This album boasts dark ambient and industrial sounds that recall Italian Futurism in two 30-minute tracks that highlight the unusual instrumentation and varied musical backgrounds of the two projects. Ampersand, led by artist and musician Stephen Oldfield, builds and performs with giant metallic structures created in his Deptford home. Along with the sound sculptures, Ampersand uses missile shell casings, corrugated iron sheets, and a dismantled piano as well as radios, detuned electric bass, and enhanced electronics. Vultures Quartet for this recording features prepared zither, a Korg synthesizer, metal percussion, bowed cymbals, and house hold objects such as pot lids, a wok, table legs, and a CD rack. Many of the acoustic sounds made by the quartet were manipulated and reintroduced into the composition through the live computer processing of member Matt Chilton. Digipak.
