"Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. GNAW THEIR TONGUES - 'Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus' CD (Crucial Blast)
Roughly translated as "with blood and whip, we worship the dark", this is the latest collection of atrocities from Gnaw Their Tongues. An eight song investigation into the rites and rituals that emerge from the copper-scented frenzy of the serial killer, the obsessive acts of death worship enacted by those that live on the edge of abyss, the limits of experience sought by black cults. The sound is, as always, immensely heavy, with fractured drums and thunderous tympani skins reverberating within a maelstrom of seething black doom, screeching classical strings, horns, piano, and some of the most vomitous vocals imaginable. However, "Per Flagellum Sanguemque..." is marked by the most frenetic percussive attack that we have heard from Gnaw Their Tongues, with volleys of chaotic drumming, fractured blasts, and maniacally complex patterns. Mania is Texan Keith Brewer (Taint, Sonic Sadist etc). Mania seems to be almost wholly focused on distilling violence, warfare, murder, and, more than anything else, the brutal power of firearms into blasts of twisted, ultraviolent Power Electronics. The sound isn't all that far removed from Taint, but on "Armed To The Teeth", Brewer lays a 35 minute track of scorching distortion, clanging metal percussion, harsh vocals that are treated with an overload of psychedelic effects and screeching, punishing waves of feedback that is then cut with interludes of recordings captured from weapons training presentations, shootings, and firing ranges. It's a weird mix of sounds, but if you've got a rotten tooth for this kind of grating speaker perversion, Mania brings it really harsh. File this next to TEF, The Rita, MSBR, Cherry Point, Macronympha, etc. Card sleeve.
