Aphelion APHELION - 'Lay' CD (Shadowgraph)

(2008) "Soundwise, think the love child of Dissecting Table and Navicon Torture Technologies (with a few stray sperm cells from Winterkalte), that came out completely malformed and mishapen. 10 brutal creations fueled by anger and pain, spewing forth a barrage of relentless sound layers combining dark, chaotic noise with walls of blasting percussion, screams, samples, and just plain bedlam. A great new discovery" (Malignant). Presented in a nice digipak with artwork by T J Barber.

Caul / Kirchenkampf CAUL & KIRCHENKAMPF - 'Sleep - Night - Death' CD (Malignant Records)

(2008) Two artists return to the Malignant roster, having teamed up to create over 60 minutes of dark ambient solitude. A soundscape for late night reflections, full of quiet, whispering drones, cosmic flutterings, arching climatic tones and textures that ascend and descend in a delicate interplay between beauty and bleak desolation. You know their work as separate entities, find out what they do when brought together. Limited to 888 copies in a gatefold digifile with spot-varnishing, designed by eye lyft.

Combative Alignment COMBATIVE ALIGNMENT - '...And Outside Glows The Red Dawn' CD (Malignant Records)

(2005) Surprisingly, the first full length CD from this powerful and visionary German project. Perhaps appropriately viewed as Combative Alignment’s benchmark, their debut offers 6 tracks that work as a virtual musical thoroughfare to a more dreamlike, illusory state. Deeply brooding atmospheres, where omniscient layers of drones and reverberating sound currents meet measured, ritual percussion as performed under the glowing, gloomy haze of a primordial sunrise. “And Outside Glows The Red Dawn” shines a dim light on a world of obscure origin, full of dark Germanic mysticism and unearthly sonic terrains. Digipak, ltd x 1000.

Control CONTROL - 'Misanthrope' CD (L-White Records)

(2003) 3rd Control CD, which continues to see a positive evolution in this American act's sound. "Strong, shuddering currents of thick electronics, with a crushing underbelly of boiling, frying, layered frequencies, the vocals streaming forth in a sickeningly wet fashion. Much more structure going on here than the past, but twice the unbridled power. Excellent..." [Malignant]. Limited to 500 copies in a nice digipak.

Des Esseintes DES ESSEINTES - 'Mondo Macabro' CD (Malignant Records)

(2006) A classic example of what’s old is new! "Mondo Macabro" compiles all of your favourite Des Esseintes vinyl releases since 2000, completely remastered and boosted them to eye popping levels. If that weren’t enough, there are also 3 bonus tracks. A great history lesson in the short existence of Des Esseintes, each track on each subsequent release just seems to up the ante, with one track more crushing than the next. A steady, doom filled procession of post-apocalyptic, tribal percussion, deadening, jackhammer rhythms, and dramatic, suspense filled atmospheres.

Dieter Müh / MNEM DIETER MUH / MNEM - 'Atomyriades' CD (Cipher Productions)

(2008) The UK's Dieter Müh (Dave Uden alone this time) manipulates Finland's MNEM. "Solid collaborative effort between these known, but still some what obscure groups, delivering 8 tracks of dark, abstract atmospheres, with an array of layered, slightly organic sounds and processed manipulations; unknown insectile noises (of a larger variety I might add), sub-aquatic, droney washes, and deep rhythmic pulsations, with a dash of industrial clutter thrown in. Quite active and constantly in motion, allowing this to work very well as background music, or with headphones to pick up the multiple nuances and ultra-hypnotic qualities. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I like this a lot more than I thought I would" (Malignant). Ltd x 500 copies in a digipak. Australian import.

Eidulon EIDVLON - 'Idolatriae' CD (Malignant Records)

(2007) The debut CD from Eidvlon (Italy) contains 7 tracks of ultra bleak, abstract atmospheres, with sounds and textures that seem to seep from catacomb walls and come slithering out of subterranean chambers. Certainly, this can be classified as a dark ambient record, but at it’s core, it’s more than just that simple classification. There’s a gritty, more jagged edge here, with tetonic shifts, deep rumblings, and crackling, climatic squalls buried under a bed of ghostly reverb and haunting tonal resonance. Fits in nicely with past Malignant releases such as R-A-A-N's 'The Nacrasti', Heid's 'Arktogaa', and even Caul's 'Crucible' CD. In elegant 6 panel digipak, with stark black and white, carefully arranged illustrations inspired by Taschism and Spatial art.

Jarl JARL - 'Out Of Balance Part I – XVII' CD (Malignant Records)

(2003) Side project of Erik Jarl, member of the revered and immensely powerful heavy electronics outfit IRM (Cold Meat). JARL doesn’t come with the aggression of that project, but it does evoke similar feelings of instability and dementia via more atmospheric means. The disc consists of 17 tracks in total, each flowing into each other, with the early pieces having an almost cosmic heaviness (ala INADE) – pulsing and weighty, the sounds of winds sweeping across a barren land and distant orb. As it progresses, however, the seeds of profound sickness and decay are planted and begin to blossom; the tones and textures becoming more surreal and unsettling, the drones a bit more persistent and penetrating, abandoning listeners in a white walled room to confront their inner demons and degenerating psyche.

Kristoffer Nystroms Orkester KRISTOFFER NYSTROMS ORKESTER - 'brakeHEAD' CD (Malignant Records)

(2006) Kristoffer Nyströms Orkester is a collaborative project between Peter Nyström (Megaptera / Negru Voda) and Kristoffer Oustad (V:28). 'brakeHEAD' is the result of a post-gig improvisation betwen the two projects from 2005. This is an album that is as majestic as it is bleak, capturing the essence of old school Swedish industrial, but forging a new path towards a dark future. "A phenomenally majestic piece of dark ambience and noise that will leave you totally awe struck. The visceral raw power of the electronics is a thing of untamed beauty that heralds in a new era by which others must now be judged against." [auralpressure]. Digipak.

The definitive last statement from this prominent and highly influential Death Industrial project.   NTT NAVICON TORTURE TECHNOLOGIES - 'Scenes From The Next Millennium' CD (Malignant Records)

NTT present an infinitely bleak and apocalyptic vision that transcends what's normally classified as Power Electronics. This is the sound of a post nuclear-war society, where war machines shudder and the black soot of dying factory production fills the poisonous air. Structured elements of loops and samples meld with caustic textures, erupting amidst bridled chaos and pulsating waves of white hot, saturated noise and distortion. Confrontational vocals, powerful bass and noise that is as dirty as possible. Sits nicely beside Con-Dom, Grey Wolves and Propergol.

Navicon Torture Technologies NAVICON TORTURE TECHNOLOGIES - 'The Church Of Dead Girls' 2 x CD (Malignant Records)

Having coined the term “Power Romance”, Leech now seeks to refine and solidify the idea into a true sound and vision of his own, once again combining the volatile, highly charged delirium of power electronics with the claustrophobically heavy atmospheres of dark ambient. “The Church of Dead Girls” is a darker and more disturbing journey than any previous NTT release, but is nevertheless rife with the brutal honesty which has begun to permeate every facet of the NTT mindset. The ultimate expression of Power Romance sensibilities, spanning more than two hours of sonic self-evisceration. Packaged in a unique hi-rise digipak.

Oblivion Ensemble OBLIVION ENSEMBLE - 'Seraphim Hallucino' CD (Malignant Records)

Over 11 years in the making (1995-2006), 'Seraphim Hallucino' is widely considered to be Act 2 of the "virtual" opera trilogy begun by Oblivion Ensemble's 1995 release of 'Nightmare: Sinistrotorse'. At Seraphim Hallucino’s source are strange, electro-acoustic improvisations of percussion, trumpet, voice, synthesizers and guitar- sculpted and sampled, twisted and turned, shaped into building and diminishing moments, and, at times appearing alone, pure and unmodified. Deeply imbedded in the music and fragmented lyrics are secrets, intertwining themes, voices, and imprinted messages. All come together to create an enormously complex, mercurial mix of surreal, dynamic and dark sounds. “To fully appreciate the scope and intricacies of ‘Seraphim Hallucino’, headphones in a darkened room are highly recommended”. Released in a stunning 6-panel digipak.

Phaenon PHAENON - 'Submerged' CD (Malignant Records)

The debut release of Polish-born artist Szymon Tankiewicz, 'Submerged' is a dark ambient tour de force. Visually and sonically enveloping, this is an album of space and texture, slowly revealing a psychoactive soundscape of majestic, arcing timbres, circadian buzzes, and expansive drones. Heavy, and cosmically weighty in the beginning, 'Submerged' evolves into something more minimalist and serene, radiating a celestial beauty, yet becoming even more bleak and suffocating as it progresses over it‘s 66 minute time frame. A must for dark ambient purists. 6 panel digipak, with artwork by K. Enderlein (LOKI). Mastered by Thomas Garrison (Control). File next to Yen Pox / Lustmord / Inade / Caul.

"Program Vengeance" continues in the great tradition set forth by Propergol’s 5 previous works, this time offering up 17 tracks of sonic turbulence. A recording that’s full of sensory overload, with the levels pushed to extremes, the noise ultra saturated, the atmospheres menacing and combustible, and the obsessive rhythms full of beautiful distortion and aggression. In the end, a sense of anguish, a feeling of despair- a mind locked away to contemplate it’s actions.   Skincage SKINCAGE - 'Axon' CD (Malignant Records)

£5 Meltdown The debut release from Skincage (Jon Ray) and the first release from Malignant's new imprint Malignant Antibody (run by Phil Easter of Stone Glass Steel). Skincage shares the same dense & evocative sample/loop construction as SGS or Iron Halo Device, yet has a contextual style that brings to mind Coil or later-day Shinjuku Thief. Skincage treats us to a dense pallet of electronics, found sounds, acoustic samples, and electrical glitches. But unlike the typical dark ambient work, the Axon album is brighter, noisier, and covers a remarkable range of compositional styles and textures - often all within the same track.

Seems like forever since Taint has graced our presence and he sure as shit doesn't disappoint. Extreme noise, feedback, hard, burrowing frequencies, and profoundly disturbing samples, with some killer vocals on this one too.
