Area Bombardment AREA BOMBARDMENT - 'In Hoc Signo Vinces' CD (Lichterklang)

In Hoc Signo Vinces is mainly a Martial album but contains also Dark Ambient and Neoclassical styles and could be compared to Arditi and Blood Axis. The tracks on the album deal with such themes as Irish and European history, philosophy, war, nature, culture and disaffection from the modern world. It's atmosphere is dark yet positive, igniting the flame of determination and unwillingness to succumb to the values of the modern world, harking back to the ancient values of honour and loyalty. The final mastering was made by Axel Frank (Werkraum) while the artwork was created by Haate Kaate (Allerseelen, Svarrogh).

Blood Axis / VinylLP BLOOD AXIS - 'Born Again' 2 x LP (Storm)

Over the course of the 12 tracks which comprise their 2nd album, "Born Again", Blood Axis explores an epic yet human universe in which gods are summoned, kingdoms rise, riddles are unlocked, love is lost, and worlds crumble. Whereas early Blood Axis music was marked by keyboards and samples, Blood Axis in 2010 is stripped down to an essential core of natural instrumentation - electric and acoustic strings, melodeon, piano, highland bagpipes and Galician gaita, marching percussion, the mysterious Annabel-a-tron, and Bobby BeauSoleil's growling, prison-vintage guitar eruptions circa 1976. Underpinning the album and propelling much of the music is the traditional Irish bodhrán, recorded here with unprecedented power. Moynihan's ominous voice is well matched by Annabel Lee's elfin intonations, just as her violin finds a perfect counterpoint in Robert Ferbrache's protean guitar parts. Shot through by myth and romance, the expressive lyrics on "Born Again" have their roots in ancient and modern poetry, archaic invocations and tragic laments. Both unclassifiable and unforgettable: neither folk nor rock, traditional nor avant-garde, modern nor archaic, it is simply Blood Axis. To everything there is season. For those who are cursed, a time to die and to be forgotten. And for the blessed, a time to be born again: to live on, beyond death, in the minds of men. Now is the time for Blood Axis to be Born Again. Ltd x 700 copies in a stunning 6-panel gatefold sleeve with 12-page full sized booklet.

Íon / Ireland ION - 'Immaculada' CD (Equilibrium Music)

A collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing light and shade, salvation and loss, matching Irish landscapes and Mediterranean sunbathed seashores with its haunting Celtic vibes that thrive and build upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its 2006 predecessor "Madre, Protégenos", the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step closer to the end of this spiritual quest. Mostly recorded in the Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin, acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound pulse of the percussion. Presented in a beautiful 6-panel digipak with foilblock lettering.

Íon / Madre, Protégenos ION - 'Madre, Protegenos' CD (Equilibrium Music)

Íon is the brainchild of Duncan Patterson (Antimatter, Anathema) and is named after the Gaelic word for 'pure'. Although primarily a solo project, a number of guest musicians are involved in this new venture by the Ireland-based musician, which hereby explores a more acoustic, dreamy and organic side to his composition. Having Irish mysticism and an exotic Mediterranean backdrop as its essential cornerstones, the project has slowly evolved into an international venture, stretching over continents and oceans. The music seems to elude strict categorisation, and even the apparently all-encompassing definition of World Music falls short in defining the ethereal moods that "Madre, Protégenos" comes to reveal. Presented in a sumptuous, black and gold foil-blocked, 6-panel digipak.

To Blacken The Pages / Korperschwache TO BLACKEN THE PAGES / KORPERSCHWACHE - 'A Way Dark' 2 x CD (Colony Records)

"A Way Dark" is a bold work from two of the most pioneering blackened noise guitar musicians working today: Texas-based Korperschwache and Dublin's To Blacken the Pages. From lighter, shoegaze inspired tracks, to harder, more abstract compositions, and of course exploring the juxtaposition of each artist's extreme guitar work. The album was a chance for both musicians to challenge other – each taking turns to suggest themes and ideas, for example each working with drum patterns and guitar structures, RKF (Korperschwache) often providing a sonic wall of drone while Paul McAree (To Blacken the Pages) would blaze guitar solos over the top. Irish import.

Waldsonne WALDSONNE - 'Wanderer' CD (RAIG)

Waldsonne's debut full-length album. Of the 11 album tracks on "Wanderer", 4 tracks are from their "Strahl" demo EP (all re-recorded), 5 are pure instrumental compositions, 1 comes with textless vocalisation, while others are sung in English, German and Russian. The band combines clean mandolin, guitars, Irish harp, and violin into a fairy acoustic blend of music with roots in medieval folk and heathen rite chants. The female singing leads the song at times strong and majestic though always tender and seductively romantic. On some tracks the quartet is supported by percussionists and a flautist. The whole work shines with heartwarming and inspiring tones, it’s all about magic and fascination but not about dark melancholy and depression. Russian import.
