A Crown of Light is a collaborative project between American artists Brandon Elkins (A Crown of Amaranth) and Robert Hunter Osgood (Conversations About the Light). 'The Clearing' is a laid back Dark Ambient record with some experimentation, some Concrete Music soundscapes, and some noisy electronics. But predominantly the album unfolds in a calm, and ominous manner, with various organic samples and vocals limited to just one song. An intriguing project to watch out for.

BLACK ELK - 'Always A Six, Never A Nine' CD (Crucial Blast)
The 2nd album from Portland, OR aggro wreckers Black Elk, whose psychotic brand of crushing, noise-rock influenced heaviosity is a return to the unhinged underground rock force of bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Black Flag and Hammerhead. This album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak, blackened guitar ambience, a smattering of piano, skyreaching guitar harmonies) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound. The shaking notes that make up "Folding Space" were recorded by two people holed up in their whole respective imaginations of visions of loops, layers and pleading lyrics. They sought sounds from the same dreams that give fools belief and colourfully punctuate the nights of the sanest. The duo create some truly beautiful drone works with their use of an organic and electronic palette of instrumentation; cello, violin, pipe organ, electronics, tape, field recordings, samples, and mixing board. This really is a standout side from Celer, pulling together their variety of sounds to make a heart breaking collage of sounds falling between beautiful dream tones and heavier dark moments. The album pushes Celer further to the front of modern minimal composition, creating some of the finest and most beautiful, fragile drone records around. With "Strings, Locations", Conure begins intimate, then discreetly leaves us stranded in a vast labyrinth. Sharp, specific washes of analogue electronic tones give the listener an audio architecture within which to navigate. The twisting sounds of ringing tones, discordant guitar accents and feedback lumber through this architectural terrain, sometimes like a monster without direction and other times like delicate intentional creatures holding ground in the middle of a vortex. Whatever this beast is, we are given an audio map of a terrain for which there is no way out. An exciting combination of harsh sounds mixed with delicate an intentional placement. One cannot exit this piece without feeling that they were witness to some narrative only half understood. It is the sound of a city’s architecture evolving from a past to a future as an abstract mystery is made audible.
CULVER / SEPPUKU - 'Dedicated To Soledad Miranda' CD (At War With False Noise)
First time on CD for both these bands: Culver is the awe-inspiring drone / noise project of Lee Stokoe (Marzuraan, Skullflower). Here he gives us a 30 min+ deluge of harrowing, bassy drone, purveying a sense of crawling dread at what is to come. Soon things get more desperate before being crushed into oblivion by a wall of crushing amplifier noise, which slowly develops into a more sedative shifting tone. Seppuku give two tracks in very different styles... the first is an unbearably heavy doom piece, giving way to some Throbbing Gristle-esque hydraulic pumping before the guitars kick in and everything is laid to waste... heavy duty! The second track sounds very post-industrial power electronics, with walls of bleak static forming the backbone of the track, interspersed with what sounds like post-apocalyptic winds of death, and some distorted lines of screeched vocal. Dialing In is the ecstatic roaring psychedelic drone project of Seattle based sound artist Reita Piecuch. Utilising the natural acoustics of a series of reverberant spaces she weaves together super saturated soundscapes by recording in one environment, playing back in another, and then re-recording this recording playing back in yet another environment. On 'Cows in Lye' the original sound sources range from loops of field recordings from a trip to India, piano, and the shifting drones of a "Shruti Box" (electronic Tamboura). EMME YA - 'Atavistic Dreams & Phallic Totems' CD (Cold Spring CSR127CD)
40 minutes of dense astral emanations and magickal paradigms transmitted through the ritual mantras generated by Emme Ya. Emme Ya's "Atavistic Dreams & Phallic Totems" is based on the mysterious African Dogon tribe and their secret oral tradition. In the 1930s two anthropologists gained their trust enough to be told these remarkable secrets. The Dogon seemed to possess advanced astronomical knowledge beyond their means, without any instruments. They revealed that the star Sirius was orbited by the 'smallest and heaviest of all stars' and drew its elliptical orbit, which spans 50 years. This white dwarf (Sirius B) is so invisible that the first image was only obtained by scientists in 1970. But the Dogon also told of a third star in the system named Emme Ya (now Sirius C). This was only discovered in 1995 and only with the use of advanced infrared imaging. The Dogon say that their information was given to their ancestors through contact with beings from the star system of Sirius, calling these beings Nommos or 'the monitors of the universe'.
This composition was recorded live in Berlin, 2010, edited and mastered by Fabio Orsi in late 2011. Orsi plays synth, guitar and filters and, for once, he just puts aside the warmth of the melodies and the samplings from the endless Alan Lomax archives, so close to the culture of his homeland. This time, he proposes two obscure and cold tracks, comparable to kosmische musik inspired by Berlin. This cold, early darkness turns into an oneiric remembrance, a daydream... The sounds of these two compositions make the listener's mind float in space and, mostly on the second side of the record, the music gets warmer, rarefied and ambient, with a seductive hypnotic power. FOLKSTORM - 'Archive Series 5 - The Culturecide Campaigns' CD (Old Europa Cafe)
The Culturecide Campaigns was released in 2000, only available for one month through MP3.com, during which time only 39 copies were sold. After 10 years, these recordings have now finally been restored, redesigned and remastered and features two bonus tracks. This album was recorded back to back with "Victory or death" and carries the same menacing feeling, but with a bit more structure and emphasis on pounding rhythmic industrial noise. If you want rough old-school industrial this is what you need! The campaign continues.
"Uufwärts e d’Föuse" (Upward to the rocks) is a conceptual album which takes the listener on an imposing musical journey to untouched Alpine areas. As on "Urbärglieder" all tracks are presented in the typical Fräkmündt Central-Swiss alemannic dialect. After an "Alp-Blessing" ("Aupsääge"), the journey upwards is visualised using acoustic guitars, accordion, drums, hurdy-gurdy melodies and flute. The nighttime track “Höttehock” is a swinging and wild traditional dancing track with a catchy accordion melody and nice acoustic guitars. The last track "Stouz ond frey" (proud and free) is a devotional and powerful song with profound hurdy-gurdy, rhythmic guitar melodies and catchy accordion tunes. The MCD ends with a Dark Alpine Ambient track called "Bärgtröim" (Mountain Dreams) which smoothly leads the listener back to the valley. A varied 27-minute piece of extraordinary Ur-Folk music, which perfectly describes the mystic and legendary Alpine areas. Outsize sleeve.

Last year My Own Little Label released 'Haze Shrapnel', a new piece by Bass Communion and a remix of that by Freiband as a 3" disc. Already back then it was agreed that there should also be a release by Freiband with a remix by Bass Communion. Due to the immense success of that 3", the new one is now released as a factory pressed 3" CD. For 'Headwind' Freiband returns to the guitar playing by Martin Luiten (Pick-up) and produces a spacious computerized remix of his elaborate playing. GENGHIS TRON - 'Board Up The House Remixes Vol. 5' 12" (Crucial Blast)
If Genghis Tron's frayed and sparking mix of aggressive mathcore and electronics wasn't innovative enough, they've embarked on an ambitious multi-label remix project following their first album, "Board Up The House". The three tracks on the fifth and final edition comes wrapped in layers of distortion at once atmospheric and damaging. Tim Hecker's take on the title track is a slow thaw of icy electronic texture, and the Nadja remix of "I Won't Come Back Alive" stretches it out to fifteen minutes of buried drum hits and chilly synths. It's Wiese - brace yourself. This 20 minute EP sees the noise maverick working with Misanthropic Agenda label boss Gerritt, hardly a shrinking violet himself, having gone head to head with Merzbow, D Yellow Swans and Sunn O))) in the past. 'The Disappearing Act EP' starts out with two short, sharp shocks of mashed-up sound, sudden jolts of electricity and the worrying rush of what sounds like toxic gas escaping from a canister. The final track is one 15 minute fade up of unbearably caustic jet engine whine. It'll have you pinned back in your armchair while your face gets pummelled by its horribly intense power. Digipak.
GHAST / ABANDONER - 'Ghast / Abandoner' CD (At War With False Noise / Choking Hazard Records)
Two tracks each from bands coming at dark heaviness from different ends of the spectrum, but who compliment each other perfectly. The 2 Ghäst tracks are painfully slow, heavy and unrelentingly repetitive funeral dirges of ultradoom. There are some definite sludge overtones going on there but this is definitely for fans of bleak doom/sludge: think Moss / Burning Witch / Corrupted etc. Abandoner is Jay and Ryan from Unearthly Trance but this is a different proposition altogether: post-industrial soundscapes, this is almost like an alternative soundtrack to Eraserhead. Drenched in feedback, almost lost vocals, buzzing, processed guitar all come together in a massive dark, almost symphonic whole. Total void music. Ltd x 500 copies.

GNAW THEIR TONGUES - 'All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity' CD (Crucial Blast)
Picking up where 2008's "An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood" left off, Gnaw Their Tongues is back with nine new tracks of fearsome blackened orchestral chaos and abstract horror that still sounds like little else out there. An even heavier bass-assault compared to the other releases, and this is easily the heaviest Gnaw Their Tongues release yet. This monstrous, noxious bottom-end roar that skulks and slithers throughout the album suggests a foul fusion of Abruptum's black chaos and Leonard Rosenman's most nightmarish film scores, piled in towering heaps of sadistic noise, warped orchestral strings, degraded samples, shrieking voices, and punishing lurching doom draped in suffocating atmosphere. GNAW THEIR TONGUES - 'L'Arrivée De La Terne Mort Triomphante' CD (Crucial Blast)
Gnaw Their Tongues transcend genres, creating their own distinct sound. Descriptors include ambient black metal, funeral doom metal, industrial drone etc. Instrumentation relies heavily on keyboards and percussion, with the drumming looming in the distance like a hideous parade before a battle is set loose. Monk-like choirs, industrial emanations, bizarre samples, occasional shrieks and droning, abused guitars are all on display, brought together almost unwillingly to share the same stage. Lyrically, L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante is a concept album about death (“morte”). Songs describe the white throne of death, address the song of death and praise death’s majesty and grandeur. For many listeners, "L’Arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante" will be little more than noise or frustratingly dull drone. However, fans of the outré of the genre, where bands such as Sunn O))) and Throbbing Gristle practice their art, will find much to uncover and savour. The characteristic trance-gong-drone-music in the release "Die Mechanik, Die!" has been saturated with electronic sounds. The album was recorded during the Hati performance at "the Mechanik" club in Gdansk. This time Hati, famous for acoustic sounds, made propably the darkest CD in its discography, enriched with dark ambient tones. HERBST9 Vs Z'EV - 'Through Bleak Landscapes' CD (Loki Foundation)
With this stunning collaboration the dark cavernous drones and ethnic-ritual instrumentation of Herbst9 melts with the complex and percussive sounds of industrial pionier and master of rhythmajik Z'EV. INANNA were at the forefront of a new force in Doom Ambience way back in the early '90s. This is stunningly re-mastered and re-packaged album brings alive one of the classic scene albums - a milestone in ultra grim and crushing death sonics, that paved the way for many Drone and Ritual Industrial bands around today. Mixed by J Havukainen (IN SLAUGHTER NATIVES).
A collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing light and shade, salvation and loss, matching Irish landscapes and Mediterranean sunbathed seashores with its haunting Celtic vibes that thrive and build upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its 2006 predecessor "Madre, Protégenos", the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step closer to the end of this spiritual quest. Mostly recorded in the Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin, acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound pulse of the percussion. Íon is the brainchild of Duncan Patterson (Antimatter, Anathema) and is named after the Gaelic word for 'pure'. Although primarily a solo project, a number of guest musicians are involved in this new venture by the Ireland-based musician, which hereby explores a more acoustic, dreamy and organic side to his composition. Having Irish mysticism and an exotic Mediterranean backdrop as its essential cornerstones, the project has slowly evolved into an international venture, stretching over continents and oceans. The music seems to elude strict categorisation, and even the apparently all-encompassing definition of World Music falls short in defining the ethereal moods that "Madre, Protégenos" comes to reveal. KAZUYA ISHIGAMI - 'Trash, Rubbish, Poor Works' CD (Neus-318)
A collection of 10 unreleased works (2004-2006) from the Osaka musician. "The music of Ishigami can best be described as a computer version of electro-acoustic music, true to the original form of Musique Concrete. Collage like, bouncing up and down, back and forth, jumping, but sometimes also with longer sustaining blocks of sound. All of which dwell heavily in the world of ones and zeros. "Evil Walks" is the most focused work yet from this utterly demented Texas outfit that started out in the mid 90s as a pure noise project but gradually evolved into this weird, lumbering black-dirge that we hear now. Thumping minimal drum-machine, droning dissonant riffs that veer from hypnotic noise to dismal quasi-black metal buzz, narcoleptic croaking and malevolent sneer bathed in reverb, the distant sad howling of wolves and ear-piercing screams drift across the background. Seven tracks of dark, ritualistic ambient. This album is built around the concept of sexual liberation, the listener brought along the path starting from 'Cocoon' and ending with 'Vagina Libertatis'. The artwork features Kristus Kut himself, being led from his cocoon by a gathering of sexually enticing female creatures. Side A consists of humming, growling drones, low siren-like sounds and high-frequency feedbacks, powerful and absorbing and very abstract, while never turning into sheer noise. LOCRIAN - 'Territories' CD (BloodLust! / Small Doses)
André Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound. They've taken elements from noise, power electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique sound reflecting the sprawling urban decay surrounding them in Chicago. For this release, Locrian has pulled out all the stops and fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff (Bloodyminded), Blake Judd (Nachtmystium), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) and Andrew Scherer (Velnias). The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals - sometimes three layers deep - seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilisation; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the big band allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones Locrian have come to be known for. MANIA - 'Armed To The Teeth' CD (Troniks / PACrec)
Mania is Texan Keith Brewer (Taint, Sonic Sadist etc). Mania seems to be almost wholly focused on distilling violence, warfare, murder, and, more than anything else, the brutal power of firearms into blasts of twisted, ultraviolent Power Electronics. The sound isn't all that far removed from Taint, but on "Armed To The Teeth", Brewer lays a 35 minute track of scorching distortion, clanging metal percussion, harsh vocals that are treated with an overload of psychedelic effects and screeching, punishing waves of feedback that is then cut with interludes of recordings captured from weapons training presentations, shootings, and firing ranges. It's a weird mix of sounds, but if you've got a rotten tooth for this kind of grating speaker perversion, Mania brings it really harsh. File this next to TEF, The Rita, MSBR, Cherry Point, Macronympha, etc. Card sleeve.

"Masami Akita in collaboration with some chickens. Given his penchant for animal kingdom-themed releases in recent years, that actually makes some sort of sense. Another theme in recent Merzbow releases has been the reappearance of analogue electronics, and true to form, Higanbana finds Akita using EMS synth alongside his laptop. It's hard to tell exactly what's making the noise at any given time here, but the intensity is often pretty overwhelming. Fortunately, in amongst the fuzz and feedback you'll hear a few cleaner oscillations penetrating the mix, adding elements of colour, and avoiding the all-out overload that might have otherwise foiled the album... This is an intense, largely unrelenting assault on the ears, and that's probably exactly what you expected to hear from Akita" (Boomkat). Packaged in a hardback 6-panel digisleeve.
Ouroboros is an ancient symbol dating back more than 4000 years. A snake or dragon eats its own tail, and represents eternity, or the circularity of life. A more modern interpretation might suggest that mankind will eventually consume itself once it finishes consuming all the life and resources on Earth. Masami Akita, recording under the name Merzbow is considered one of the preeminent artists in the field of noise music. In recent years his output has centered on animal themes, following his concern for the protection of animal rights. Albums for chickens, whales, seals and dolphins have been released on a variety of labels. "Ouroboros" is presented in an exquisite handmade screen-printed eight-panel roll-folder featuring original artwork by Mr. Akita, and is limited to 500 copies.
Mathias Josefsons one-man-project Moljebka Pvlse from Stockholm, Sweden here stretches the boundaries of ambient drone-music, perhaps a surprising listen for those accustomed to his other recordings put out by Eibon and Cold Meat Industry to name a few. This work to a larger degree features a sound pallette unarguably harsher than his other recordings. Tons of frenzied, computerised, but crispy clear distortion flows out over you like an ice wall and leaves the listener in a nervous state, begging for a warming aftermath. Static walls of rampant treated guitars and billowing droney backgrounds screaming endlessly out over the cold plains of the earth. Ambient gourmets also get their piece, though somewhat in a more experimental way. The final track is the 16-minute long soundtrack to the movie "A Bird Is Not An Animal" by D & D Productions. First appearing as a limited edition LP on the Spanish label Throne Records in 2008, "Mer Morte" is now made available on CD as an unbroken thirty-four minute sludge-and-feedback feast that sprawls out further into the dismal black void that these French doom junkies have been lurking in for the past six years. As with previous releases, Monarch move through massive blackened tarpits of low-end riffage and sheets of gluey feedback that are stretched out into monolithic slabs of sound, a grim, glacial ultra-doom that crawls at a saurian sub-tempo. Vocalist Emilie sounds as gaunt and ghostly as ever, her vocalizations materializing across the spatial doomscape as distant ululating wails, breathy whispers, and putrid death shrieks. Digisleeve.

Sphere Rex is the solo project of MK (Cyclotimia), playing ambient in a traditional vein (uncommon for today), combining minimalism and a background style of electronic music a la Brian Eno and piano improvisations based on proto-ambient ideas of Erik Satie. This music is able to calm down and lull to sleep like alpha-wave rhythms or paint weird images guided by the surreal titles of compositions in one's imagination. For the goals of complete authenticity only analogue devices were used in recordings, as well as tube pre-amps and compressors from 60s-70s. Ltd x 500 copies. Russian import.
"Into The Dark" is a beautifully restrained and elegant piece of ambient music reminiscent of "Neroli" by Brian Eno, and "Entering Twilight" by James Johnson. Moving patterns of sounds, varying from bell-like chimes to deep rumbles vaguely-ethnic rattles, interact and react to create an always-shifting atmosphere, a sense of "place" and mood while avoiding ambient music cliches. A single, continuously-evolving track of over 74 minutes, "Into The Dark" works great as a background atmosphere for continuous repeat play. But like the best ambient music, it is appealing enough for careful listening as patterns repeat and evolve, and themes emerge throughout.

Formed by aggression and pain the aptly titled 'Pain Implantation' is probably a good description of the music, given the focus of the approach. Sparse and suffocating atmospheres float forth while distorted sicken tones are injected. Dramatically straying from the neofolk path of their debut album “Galder”, “Symphonies of Divination” offers dark and bombastic compositions with clear references to Slavonic, German and Scandinavian classical music. Heavy percussion, assiduous spiccato string sections, dramatic horn accents and haunting choirs form the backbone of this album. The cold and eerie narrative vocals enhance the grim atmosphere of the music even further. Whisper Room is a trio based in Toronto, Canada and Berlin, Germany featuring Aidan Baker (Nadja), Neil Wiernik (NAW) and Jakob Thiesen (Students). These three creative minds had moved in similar musical circles in Toronto and Montreal for years sporadically sharing stages but did not actively come together to play as a trio until Dec 2006. Since then they have worked as a improv unit and combined their disparate musical backgrounds to create music which explores the conjunction of electronic rhythms and textures with the pulsations and psychedelics and shoegaze and krautrock music. YAROVIT - 'Simargl's Call' CD (Nihil Art / CyberBorea)
Yarovit`s music is many-sided and advisedly cannot be confined within the limits of one defined style. Their compositions can be termed heroic rhythmic Ambient-Folk, in some tracks with background guitar, screaming "black" vocals and martial warlike vocals in Russian. Simargl is a deity or mythical creature in East Slavic mythology. Ltd x 500 copies in a jewelcase with runic text throughout.
Za Frûmi is Simon Kölle (Musterion, Abnocto) and Simon Heath (Atrium Carceri). "Gathering In The Mist" is the third chapter in the Za Frûmi saga. This is Dark Ambient / Dark Folk / Fantasy music, with dialog in orcish and the language of the elves. A 20-page booklet contains the manuscript (with a helpful English translation) and the story, including what happened in chapter 1 and 2. More than 20 'actors' helped out creating this unique dark fantasy experience. This CD is a step back to 'Za Shum Ushatar Uglakh' but also a great step forward in production. All that love dark fantasy, orcs, elves (Lord Of The Rings) and atmosphere (early Mortiis etc) should own this highly recomended CD!
ZBIGNIEW KARKOWSKI & TETSUO FURUDATE - 'World As Will IV' CD (OHM Records)
"IV" in the 'World As Will' series ("III" Sub Rosa, "II' 23five, "I" Staalplaat). "‘World As Will’ is a work in which Zbigniew Karkowski and Tetsuo Furudate combine orchestral music with computer music - read: noise. At the basis here lie two performances, one for sax, trombone, flute and sine waves and the other for a small ensemble called Sonic Boom. These recordings are slaughtered by the composers during a concert in Tokyo and turned into a racket of noise. Another heavy weight release, with lots of cascading noise samples of orchestral origin spliced on the spot together, fed through the lions of granular synthesis - and who knows what else. Its however in the power of these hands that they know, somewhere in the middle how to pull back and go deeper and deeper into what seems to be the crackling of surfaces with contact microphones, before returning to the world of crashing noise and only to return once more to that somewhat dark underworld, going back up after for a cascading finale. Noise indeed and perhaps I should have left this in the capable hands of Jliat, but this is actually noise of the more intelligent kind" (Vital Weekly). Limited to just 200 copies in a digipak!

"The music of Ishigami can best be described as a computer version of electro-acoustic music, true to the original form of Musique Concrete. Collage like, bouncing up and down, back and forth, jumping, but sometimes also with longer sustaining blocks of sound. All of which dwell heavily in the world of ones and zeros.
