"Confessions Of A Narcissist" marks the final full-length release by Fire In The Head ending six years of sonic warfare with an assault of manic, self-indulgent industrial electronics. Drawing as much influence from early punk / hardcore as from industrial / power electronics, F/I/T/H was conceived as a cathartic outlet to explore and ratify the delusions and social perversions resultant of psychosis and the darker side of man's conflicted dual nature, to fan the flames which engulf the borders between obsession, compulsion, lust and need. The tracks on this release were recorded in 2007-2008 and are the last of the "short, sharp, shock" vocal tracks which Michael abandoned in favour of "epic" length industrial / ambient compositions. TenHornedBeast's third album for Cold Spring was recorded from 2006-2009. This album introduces subtle changes to the established THB sound with delicate interludes separating longer tracks that rage with heavy distortion and doom-drone barbarism. "Hunts & Wars" progresses the established THB sound using leaden, sub-tuned bass guitar to create rhythms and riffs that dominate a battlefield of vast ritual percussion and droning walls of electric dissonance, creating epic and expansive textures that by turns burn with frost and freeze with fire. Influenced by the oneiric visions of Robert E Howard and Lord Dunsany. VARGHKOGHARGASMAL - 'Drowned In Lakes' CD (Tumult)
This one-man German act creates a difficult sound to describe... The vocals are minimal, a hushed whisper here and there, a Viking style chant during one song, but it's mostly left to the music, which is incredibly evocative, it's like some sort of acoustic black metal, mixed with slowed down surf rock, dark languorous krautrock, and a distinct Morricone vibe too. Most of the songs creep and crawl, sometimes behind a curtain of rainfall, the sound of the forest spirits, flickering firelight, fireflies lighting up the canopy overhead. Pianos pick out mournful melodies, the drums, lurching along, a perfectly imperfect accompaniment, organs wheeze, synths whir, steel strings twang, the whole thing so impossibly transcendent, effortlessly evoking ancient atmospheres and deep emotions. "Horror", the first half of the release, is relatively song oriented and was inspired musically by 90s darkwave, as well as traditional melodies of both Eastern and Western culture. "Forsaken" mainly carries traditional dark ambient influences and focuses on atmosphere rather than on conventional song structure or sound. Debut album from this Italian act, formed in Firenze in 1996, but on ice until now. 3 tracks (47 minutes) of pure sombre Dark Ambient, inspired by astral projections, initiations, untouched places, arcane geometries, solitude and frozen landscapes. "...their debut album meanders on its dark journey through crystalline streams and misty mountains utilising its dark ambient confines to noble and magisterial effect. The mood created is often one of immense loss and tragedy; time stands still while silent mourners stand, heads bowed in dark flowing cloaks, hands clasped in a futile bid to deny the cold. The synths never sound overworked, employed with the idea of giving each composition a life of arboreal quality - slow, noble, and wise.
