15 Degrees Below Zero 15 DEGREES BELOW ZERO - 'Resting On A' CD (Edgetone Records)

With their third full length CD, 15 Degrees Below Zero re-introduce the listener to their signature blend of guitar, digital and analog atmospheres, and noise. The trio continue to explore a territory of noise-oriented soundscapes, rich drones, flowing ambient and compositional narratives that emerge between the planes of discord and melody, but with this release, a feeling of spaciousness underlies the existing tension.

Alfredo Costa Monteiro / Epicycle ALFREDO COSTA MONTEIRO - 'Epicycle - Metallic Brown Cover Edition' CD (Etude Records)

Portuguese minimal-electro-acoustic artist Alfredo Costa Monteiro surprises with "Épicycle". The steady-state, relatively drone-ish character of this 38-minute piece of work is much more fluid than his earlier work and is also based on sound recordings of his voice, although processed virtually beyond recognition. "Épicycle" fluctuates from roars to barely perceptible pings, often with an abruptness that initially startles but on second listen seems entirely natural, like a cloud suddenly blotting out sunlight. It's a fascinating, chillingly beautiful journey; you never feel quite safe but always have the sense you're in capable, acutely sensitive hands guided by a deep musical imagination. Comes in an outsized sleeve with metallic brown cover.

Antonio Testa ANTONIO TESTA - 'Inframundis' CD (Faria Records)

"Inframundis" ("inland universe", Latin) is a research of stalagmite and stalactite sounds mixed with textures and drone. It's a meditative record and it creates a balance between biosphere and technosphere. The CD sets free all its energies, its little/big sounds, its hidden atmospheres, and microharmonies. The sounds, music, make us come back to the past, offering us the view of a World. The sound evokes angelical moments between the imperceptible evolution of the sound of the sky and the ethnic roots, natural instrumental sounds creating atmospheres which evoke in our imaginary visions and images of the most far places. It is an alchemic project of ancestral sounds, deeply rooted in our unconscious. Ltd x 500 copies in an outsized package with inserts. Russian import.

Boy Dirt Car BOY DIRT CAR - 'Spoken Answer To A Silent Question' CD (Aftermusic)

The Milwaukee Noise ensemble Boy Dirt Car (including Eric Lunde) issues its first new recordings since 1988. Many of you will know the name from their appearances on RRRecords. "... I keep thinking to recognize the old Boy Dirt Car, but there is also strong memories of Impact Test [BDC member Darren Brown]. It's not easy to pin this down, but rock drone would come close I think. Slow, peaceful organ loops, heavy bass and siren like sounds, make this balancing on the fine line of ambient industrial and 'real' industrial, although this comes nowhere close to the real noise. Hard to imagine that eight (!) people play on this work. It's both retro sounding as well as new, this can be a true example for everybody who love their lo-fi noise / drone / rock music of the younger generation" [FDW]. Digipak.

Circle CIRCLE - 'Forest' CD (Ektro Records)

Finnish version of the 2004 album. "It's incredible how Circle always manage to maintain their trademark sound - repetitive, hypnotic post-prog-rock grooves - even as they produce new albums with such distinct, different identities. Forest, is another great, unique Circle effort. This time around, they've gone semi-acoustic, kinda folky. Also spooky and sinisterly-synthed... This a Forest of nightmares, with whispering and groaning in the trees... Most of the time Forest is all-instrumental, spacious, suspenseful, grooved-out, darkness. The final, longest track dabbles in ambient, experimental witch-project drone before those Circle rhythms return and Mika moans his last. So good" (Aquarius).

Cisfinitum is one of the oldest and well-known projects in the Russian industrial scene. The material has been remastered and recompiled to become the new entity called "Coniunctio." Going through the desperate landscapes of today's dying spiritless world, the listener comes into the sacred and surreal inner space of an immaterial land full of light, mysticism and universal melancholy. Malignant presents another rising star within the dark ambient scene, this time in the form of French act Collapsar. With their debut CD, Collapsar transports the listener on an epic journey deep into the cosmos, forging a path across a vast, inky void, and steering a course around a roiling galactic core of hyper-dense stars and black holes. The sound is epic, expansive, and most of all, HEAVY. There is beauty and tranquility within these realms, but there is no light - just massive, pulsating textures coalescing into shimmering drones, rippling sound waves, and billowing, multi-dimensional layers of powerful dark energy. “Beyond the Event Horizon” is without question, dark ambient in its purest form and one of the more genre defining releases of the last several years.   Emeralds EMERALDS - 'Solar Bridge' CD (Hanson Records)

Starting out in 2005, Emeralds has grown in recent years into a monster of heavy improvised drone using analog synths and masterfully effected guitar. Born out of the midwest scum-noise scene, these guys have taken the intense heaviness of their midwest brethren to a place that is entirely their own. They have replaced the creepy atmosphere and abrasive harsh noise of their peers with a very different, though equally intense assault of cosmic drone power. This is the trio's first full-length album after numerous limited releases. Fans of the smooth tones of 'New Age Of Earth' era Ash Ra Tempel and the buzzing thick drones of Throbbing Gristle's 'Heathen Earth' should take note, as Emeralds may be their new source for electronic drugs.   Half Makeshift HALF MAKESHIFT - 'Omen' CD (Profound Lore Records)

“Omen” is a devastating observation of formidable experimental ambient drone-like subtle mastery. With moments that remind of Nadja, Sunn O))), Godspeed! You Black Emperor and A Silver Mount Zion, “Omen” is an opus of dense and flowing sonic terrain where cinematic sound visions create vast, desperate, and devastating scenarios, almost serving its purpose like a desperate doomsday soundtrack. Working as a 50+ minute track, but separated into four parts, “Omen” subtly shifts through different emotions and moods; soothing and comforting, yet at the same time virulent and uneasy, and ultimately eerie and chilling. The incredible use of melody via light guitar strums and guitar ambience, melded with waves of static bursts and ivory key tappings, create the build-up that will inevitably come in the form of massive drone rumblings. A 44:22 minute long soundtrack of dark isolation, drones and exploration of ambient music, blending electronic soundscapes with the sound of raw guitar. A beautiful, haunting and darkly complex work packaged in an exclusive triptych panel with brilliant artwork by SELDON HUNT (also known for his artwork for Sunn O))), Earth, Troum, Neurosis, Z'EV etc).

“Welcome to the poison city. A place where nuclear radiations colour the sky with green clouds, mutating vegetation suffocates the sun and asphyxiating miasms coming from abandoned toxic wastes endanger life...”. LUASA RAELON is one of the most interesting realities of US dark ambient/death industrial scene, combining low-rumbling drones with extemporaneous noise bursts to create a pretty personal and recognisable sound.

Lunar Abyss / 7inch LUNAR ABYSS DEUS ORGANUM - 'Brusnika' 7" (Drone Records)

Lunar Abyss (ext.) is the child of Evgueny Savenko from St. Petersburg, who creates his own peculiar touch of hypnotic-ethno-ambient industrial music mostly under the name Lunar Abyss Quartet. This very first 7" for L.A.D.O. is a pure aural-shamanistic-journey, where heard and felt are Earth's elements and life itself, such as fire, voice-murmurs, strange animals noises, the wind's force and whistles, the enchanting voice of a woman singing, various softly looped voices are perceptible throughout this sound journey. All these natural sound-ingredients are merged into a deeply etched vibrating rhythm of raw and deepest rumbling analogue sounds. These are the kind of electro-acoustic drone-pieces that breathes spiritual strength and build shamanistic atmospheres full of intensity. 1st edition of 300 copies on red vinyl with insert and unique hand-painted covers.

MNortham / Martin Franklin MARTIN FRANKLIN & MICHAEL NORTHAM - 'An Opening Of The Earth: Recovered' CD (Faria Records)

"An Opening Of The Earth: Recovered" revisits a spontaneous collaboration between the two musicians, captured in the early 90's. Mythic imagery of man descending into the mysteries of the Inner Earth is conjured in this intense recorded performance. Using lo-fi sampling, eerie drones, percussive metal instruments and effects, the players trace an intuitive path through a midnight electronic improvisation. Like an unearthed archeological find, the recordings of this ritualistic performance tie the pieces to their location, as well as the events of their time. After unearthing the original tapes, Martin Franklin has created new mixes for this release, including previously unheard sections, re-interpreted and enhanced for the 21st Century listener. "Mystery Seas" (originaly released in 1995 on A-Scale Recordings and now entirely remastered) is the second of Martyn Bates' (Eyeless In Gaza) "Letters Written" series. On this album he sets his songs into organ based backings, going roght back to the drones of traditional song and more than this, to church music. It's an intensive sound which would appeal to fans of traditional folk and electronic music fans all at once. There is a dream state built up from these songs of drifting minimal chords and layers of vocals. What could sound sparse, sounds full and balanced. Digipak.

For some years now Stockholm based artist Mathias Josefson has delighted the drone scene with his highly minimal excursions into drone territory. From harsh noise to soft and gentle ambience, the aim is to reach a basic level of sound conscience. In doing so the "human mind" and the "sound mind" interact to build a symbiotic entity. "Lode" and "Lvx" are great examples of breathing drone structures which seem to be derived from real string or wind instruments. The two pieces on this "Drone" captivate the listener with intelligently assembled and multi-layered recordings of a garden in London (i.e. tree bark, water, footsteps, a creaking gate), processer and ventilation sounds of an old computer, and beads of a broken necklace. Thematically, "The Nacrasti" explores an ancient desert culture that was advanced beyond its time and yet long forgotten by history. Your dark evolving journey into this lost "Nacrastan" landscape is streaked with the warm hue of sun-bleached rock, sand, gold, and fire. Terrific 3-track 10" by the prolific German composer Ralf Wehowsky. The whole composition is based on only few seconds of piano sounds and vocals (the rest is imagination). The track titles and pieces offer strong inter-relations in a complex way. The sounds develop through imagination and decay and appear in the pieces with different emphases. The classical piano sounds and its highly processed permutations are set in contrast with the highly emotional voice material, like entering a convoluted labyrinth of voice frazzles, drones and fragmented, strange micro-sounds. Are these the memories of single cells? The shadow of abrasion processes? The slow decay of imaginations? A fantastic work where conceptual thoughts and emotionally driven acoustics merge in a perfect way. First edition of 500 copies on amber / black marbled vinyl with an inlay.

Equipped with a frightening and impressive array of primitive instrumentation pulled from junkyards and scrap metal heaps, this Portuguese outfit has delivered an astounding debut - a heady mixture of truly old school industrial in the vein of Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Dept. and S.P.K., and the grinding, bass heavy dirge of vintage Swans and Godflesh. These are anthems to the past, but geared towards an apocalyptic and bleak future… a form of counter-culture using what is most evident in modern western society: the debris, the abandoned objects, the waste, the noise, and the interference. With a solid foundation of rusty, oil drenched percussion, Sektor 304 adds layer upon layer of squalling industrial clangor, hammering metallic noise, grimy atmospheres, heaving masses of haunted factory drones, and threatening tribal batter, with a strong and commanding vocal presence. An orgy of bass frequencies, an apocalypse of drones, a black resounding monolith. Those who are in love with gloomy ambiences won't be put to bread and water. Experience the depths, if you're brave enough... Digifile.

A legendary and very original Italian post industrial group from the cassette-underground culture of the late 80’s/ early 90’s, who had their one and only vinyl release on Drone in 1995. They were at the forefront of what one could call “archaic drone-noise”. TQTR are active again these days so we decided to put this early Drone EP back into existence.   Tarkatak / Skarva / 7inch TARKATAK - 'Skärva' 7" (Drone Records)

A north German drone-project that has since this EP developed to one of the main German atmospheric deep droners... beautiful, dark transcendental noise. Tarkatak uses synths and other electronic devices, the music is slow, non-impulsive and dream-like. Very low rumblings, dark harmonies, some subliminal and dense backwards-effects. This is "archaic music" which could be easily compared to old Zoviet France and the like. Another Mind-Drone.   Terra Sancta TERRA SANTA - 'Disintegration' CD (Malignant Records)

Four years after the release of "Aeon", "Disintegration" finds Australia’s Terra Sancta in fine form, delivering another sweeping, dark ambient epic. Expanding on the sounds explored on his previous releases, "Disintegration" pushes the levels of intensity to new heights, featuring four long and texturally turbulent emissions of formidable power and depth. With it’s enormous washes of stormy drones and billowing, multi-layered atmospheres, these are tracks that grow and build to such a degree they seem to collapse and erode under their own weight, strewing particles into a vast horizon and creating a broad panorama of ever changing desert colored hues. A completely enveloping and engulfing release, this is dark ambient on a massive scale. Artwork designed by Vestigial.

Another rare release from this Newcastle label, this time around the one and only album from obscure UK experimental / noise group The Daughters Of Conceptual Sex Death. "This release lies within the experimental realm, controlled, distorted-ambient soundscapes. The sonic attacks are used to punctuate the floaty keyboards and streams of swirling drones. Looped sounds hypnotise and draw you into a world of processed and dissected ambiences" (Bizarre). Ltd x 500 hand-numbered copies in a heavy PVC archive sleeve with 2 inserts.

Northaunt mastermind Harleif Langas gives voice to a less dark and oppressive journey with "Exit lines", and explores the thin boundary between ambient (not necessarily dark....) music and spacious post-rock. Deep drones and sparse melodic guitar lines, "skeletal" structures and subtle noises. Appealing to both the Constellation-freaks and the courageous (and open minded) dark ambient travellers.   The Infant Cycle / 7inch THE INFANT CYCLE - 'Secret Hidden Message' 7" (Drone Records)

The Infant Cycle is an experimental project from Ontario (Canada), active since 1992. The three pieces on this EP were created using sounds from various instruments (Trombone, guitar, windchimes, marimba, birdcage). The result sounds rather electronic and hypnotic, with bright shining drones and repetitive rhythmic patterns, loops moving into more amorphous and multilayered electro-acoustics. In spite of the rather experimental working-methods the outcome is very compact and condensed. The Infant Cycle's approach to sound is based on the belief that words and explanations can only fail to describe or explain it, what is needed is a non-verbal, intuitive understanding of the work."   Theme THEME - 'Valentine (Lost) Forever' CD (HCB Records)

The third album from Theme (Richard Johnson of Splintered, Stuart Carter and Jeanne Boyer). On "Valentine (Lost) Forever" Theme uses barbed yet oblique words cut-up and formed into mantras over a mesh of cascading drones, textures, blissed-out guitar strums, submerged tamboura, metallic sheets of electronic frah, occasional drum pounds and chilling swells 'n' flecks of musique concrete. With an additional remix by ex-Siouxsie & the Banshees bass player Steven Severin, this genuine album offers an apocalyptic sound mirage that recalls the experimental and post industrial works of :Zoviet*France, Throbbing Gristle and Coil, as well as the occult-like numbness of Current 93, the bleak avant-electronica of Andrew Liles and the psychedelic drones furrowed by the group's own previous work. "Valentine (Lost) Forever" is a definite masterpiece in the ever-evolving legacy of the UK industrial scene.

Travis Ryan / DBATC TRAVIS RYAN / DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS - 'Split' CD (Chrome Peeler)

Split release from two US acts: Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation, 5/5/2000) and Death By A Thousand Cuts. Travis Ryan's four tracks open the disc with an edgy, paranoid ambience that mixes environmental buzzes and electronic hum with blurry theremin melodies and hushed buzzsaw tones, evoking the faint but discernible hum of electricity you feel when standing at the edge of an urban landscape in the middle of the night. Death By A Thousand Cut's nightmarish free electronic designs are conjured from noxious bass sinewaves and cloudy keyboard drones, curling upwards out of metal-on-metal carnage and blasts of laser-beam effects-pedal violence, and the music becomes strangely beautiful, especially with the cosmic Troum-meets-Bastard Noise insectoid frequencies of final track "Approach Of The Black Claw". A continuation of Maeror Tri, this is dark, moody, contemplative ambient / drone material. "The first half of this single still sounds like Troum, but is unlike anything we've heard from them, strange looped high end guitar, what sounds like backwards chords, almost choral vocals, dramatic and haunting and cinematic... over a distant grinding low end tone drifting way off in the background, washed over by epic sweeping swells.. The other side is a bit more raw and intense, a seriously corrosive guitarscape, distorted and crumbling chordal buzz, looped and layered into a strange glacial riff... it manages to be intense and fierce but also gloriously washed out and blissful."
