ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Formen Letzter Hausmusik' CD (Die Stadt)
Part six in the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums onto CD. "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" was originally released on United Dairies in 1984. The original album consisted of a mix of archive tracks from the late 1960s / early 1970s and new tracks specially recorded for the release. Many people see "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" as the first 'real' Tietchens album laying the basis of what was about to follow in his long recording career and therefore vote this album among the most important and best Tietchens works. The CD version includes three unreleased bonus tracks and comes with the usual poster booklet featuring the original cover art plus text by Tietchens about the album. Ltd x 1000.

ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Geboren, Um Zu Dienen' CD (Die Stadt)
Eighth part of theTietchens re-release series. Described by Tietchens himself as his 'industrial' album, "Geboren, Um Zu Dienen" was originally released on the Spanish Esplendor Geometrico label in 1986. "Although I obviously wasn't one of the inventors of 'industrial music,' I clearly felt an affinity to it... My main concern was to dive deep into the canonical topics of fear, hysteria, claustrophobia, machine and threat." ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Notturno' CD (Die Stadt)
Part 10 of the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums from 1980-1991 on CD. "Notturno" was originally released on LP by Discos Esplendor Geometrico in 1986 (ltd x 518) and then on CD by Baronni in 1993. Following 'Formen Letzter Hausmusik' and 'Hydrophonie', 'Notturno' was another 'serious' attempt at composing more electro-acoustic music, and Tietchens limits himself to using the (grand) piano, looping the sounds and filtering through sound effects and synths. To use loops as to the extent that Tietchens does is something that sets him aside from the regular musique concrete composers. Remastered.

DAVID JACKMAN & PHILIP SANDERSON - 'Terrain' 10" (Die Stadt)
Two tracks from early cassette releases. Side A is an alternative version of "Terrain" by Jackman and Sanderson, originally released on the "0 Degrees North" cassette (Aeroplane 1982). With Jackman overdubbing low guttural growls on a steel strung cello and Sanderson programming coffee-percolation on a drum machine, "Terrain" is a lo-fi production that finds its companions in the work of Throbbing Gristle, Hunting Lodge, and the Broken Flag camp of noise. Side B is a solo piece by Jackman, originally released on the 'Adrift' cassette (Snatch Tapes 1981). It is similarly lo-fi with a hypnotic loop of a monochromatic guitar topped with clanging metals and samples from orchestral swells, which have been drained of all color and replaced with a swampy din. Coil, Nurse With Wound, SPK, Lustmord etc). Both tracks presented here are the January 2003 mixes of the original material, which was derived from variously stimulating a cymbal with bows, knuckles, loops etc. An extremely dense piece of experimental noise where (allegedly) the B side is the A side reversed. DAVID JACKMAN - 'Flak' 10" (Die Stadt)
An excellent 10" release offering two diverse pieces. Side A is a heavy, densely layered drone piece comprised of harsh, grating sounds all over the sound field, but sliding from start to finish with remarkable constancy. It's a truly beautiful noise, rather like some of Jackman's earlier work as Organum. Side B is a field recording, untreated, unfiltered, recorded outdoors, with a great hiss that is very much present in the mix. This second track seems to comment on the drone piece in a way, acting as an alternative exploration of its theme. Regular edition of 400 copies.

DAVID JACKMAN - 'Verhalte Dich Ruhig' MCD (Die Stadt)
Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. The title seems to translate to "hold you back calmly" and that sentiment certainly matches the music. Two untitled tracks spanning just over 25 minutes. Ltd x 700 copies.

ILLUSION OF SAFETY & THOMAS KONER - 'Untitled' 7" (Die Stadt)
Great split release from Chicago's stalwart post-Industrial ensemble Illusion Of Safety and Germany's dronecore specialist Thomas Köner. Illusion Of Safety takes a confrontationist approach by opening their condensed program with a jarring clatter of fragmented film-noir orchestrations that are roughly broken into a nervous drone. Köner's approach is far more subtle, gently pushing forward a sublime drone and allowing it to fade into silence. ILLUSION OF SAFETY - 'In Opposition To Our Acceleration' CD (Die Stadt)
"In Opposition To Our Acceleration" begins innocuously enough with tinkled chords from a pianist fractured into quaint glitches. Such aural pleasantries have been deliberately staged as a counterpoint to something far more sinister. Sure enough, a disturbed ambience settles upon the rest of the album as the playful piano tones are replaced by razor sharp piercings coupled with psychoactively eerie drones and scribbles from a microphone across a metal plate. Illusion of Safety actualize their name through a theatrical exploration of "the language of error." Sumptuously packaged in an outsized gatefold pack with several artcards. Ltd x 1000.

JOHN DUNCAN - 'Da Sich Die Machtgier...' CD (Die Stadt)
Asmus Tietchens sent processed recordings of himself reading excerpts from two texts by E. M. Cioran. Duncan worked on and manipulated them, creating three pieces. There is little of Tietchens remaining in these abstract creations. Speed-altered voice tracks are stacked, swirling electronic sounds in the background providing proof of deeper processing. "Freih zein hoem macht..." ranks among Duncan's harshest pieces to date, while "Aber..." is more "typical" Duncan: a drone derived from the sound source but from which the sound source has been obliterated, and yet makes its ghostly presence palpable. ORGANUM - 'Die Letzte Musik Vor Dem Krieg' 7" (Die Stadt)
"Two tracks recorded in 2003 with only a vague hint of the classic Organum sound. The drone material is there, but the sound is slightly similar to The New Blockaders, with the addition of random piano chords. On side two, there is the distorted sound of Tibetan horns added on a similar bed of sounds. It's a distinct break away from the pure Organum drone sound, with an interesting addition of new sounds that especially in 'Happy' works well. David Jackman/Organum still knows how to surprise his followers and is a remarkable conceptualist" [FdW]. Regular edition of 400 copies.
The two tracks featured here are a further development from the "Die letzte Musik vor dem Krieg" 7". Jackman offers a stately cluster of looped piano chords, with the sustain pedal firmly depressed. Just as on 'Sanctus' and 'Amen' - and much true to the form of Organum mystery, there are three pieces here, which all sound quite similar - or perhaps they are similar? ... just enjoy that crazy genius Organum. I am long converted to his belief" (FdW). First edition of 600 copies in digipak.
Following "Tinnitus Vu" (Touch, 2004), "Tocsin" is the first full length album by these two renowned sound artists. Whereas Z'EV simply reworked already existing work by Jackman for "Tinnitus Vu", this time the artists agreed to both meet in the studio for "Tocsin". They created and recorded sounds from a piano and a stainless steel piece built by Z'EV circa 1989, over the course of several hours, took the recordings home, and after a period of each one mixing these sounds by themselves came up with what can be heard on this CD.
