Asmus Tietchens ASMUS TIETCHENS & RICHARD CHARTIER - 'Fabrication' 2 x CD (Die Stadt)

'Fabrication' saw its beginning during the production of 'Re-Post-Refabricated', a project in which artists were selected by Richard Chartier to rework / create new works from his 1998 CD 'Postfabricated' for its reissue in 2003. As it was intended as an open project, Asmus Tietchens continued to explore the source materials and suggested further formal collaboration. This evolved into the collaborative work 'Fabrication'. Limited edition of 500 copies with bonus CD featuring the complete material created by Tietchens from 'Postfabricated' entitled 'Post-Fabrication'. The CD comes in a full colour digisleeve with artwork and design by Chartier.

Asmus Tietchens ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Biotop' CD (Die Stadt)

Second in the re-release series, including 2 unreleased bonus tracks. With the release of this album, a 3 year interlude began which was dominated by the use of Roland 'CompuRhythm' drum-machine and the Moog. Tietchens also added a conceptual self-limitation: no track should be more than four minutes long. Because of the total absence of bass lines the commercial potential of the pieces was virtually non-existent. The album was recorded on an 8-track Otari tape-machine. The Eventide digital harmonizer and the Ursa Major 'Space Station' reverb-machine also played a part. All of the pieces were recorded in 1980. Ltd x 1000.

Part six in the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums onto CD. "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" was originally released on United Dairies in 1984. The original album consisted of a mix of archive tracks from the late 1960s / early 1970s and new tracks specially recorded for the release. Many people see "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" as the first 'real' Tietchens album laying the basis of what was about to follow in his long recording career and therefore vote this album among the most important and best Tietchens works. The CD version includes three unreleased bonus tracks and comes with the usual poster booklet featuring the original cover art plus text by Tietchens about the album. Ltd x 1000.

Eighth part of theTietchens re-release series. Described by Tietchens himself as his 'industrial' album, "Geboren, Um Zu Dienen" was originally released on the Spanish Esplendor Geometrico label in 1986. "Although I obviously wasn't one of the inventors of 'industrial music,' I clearly felt an affinity to it... My main concern was to dive deep into the canonical topics of fear, hysteria, claustrophobia, machine and threat." "I found myself trying to square the circle, wanting to have the rich detail of my short works at the same time as creating longer pieces.   Asmus Tietchens ASMUS TIETCHENS - 'Notturno' CD (Die Stadt)

Part 10 of the ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums from 1980-1991 on CD. "Notturno" was originally released on LP by Discos Esplendor Geometrico in 1986 (ltd x 518) and then on CD by Baronni in 1993. Following 'Formen Letzter Hausmusik' and 'Hydrophonie', 'Notturno' was another 'serious' attempt at composing more electro-acoustic music, and Tietchens limits himself to using the (grand) piano, looping the sounds and filtering through sound effects and synths. To use loops as to the extent that Tietchens does is something that sets him aside from the regular musique concrete composers. Remastered.

Part Three in the ongoing re-release series of all early vinyl albums from 1980 - 1991. 'Spät-Europa' was Tietchens second album for SKY Records, recorded in 1981, documenting his search for his own style of 'pop music'. "Even more consistently than on Biotop I kept all of the tracks on this album deliberately short. Originally, all of them were supposed to be exactly two minutes in length but, back then, without a computer, this was not really possible and the idea could not be carried ot precisely. Nonetheless, this strict concept gave the listener a total of twenty miniatures, four more than on Biotop" [Tietchens]. Ltd x 1000, with a poster booklet featuring the original cover artwork.

Limited repress of the classic album from 2000, which is partly based on (and also dedicated to) the work of Friedrich Jurgenson, who believed he could channel the voices of the dead onto magnetic tape or shortwave radio. The work was originally presented as a sound installation that aspired to achieve communication with other worlds utilising EVP (the installation picks up electrical and radio transmissions: microphones record the noise of electricity, sine wave tones are received, and cameras capture electric behaviour). 50 minutes of seamless dark drone / buzz, gradually getting louder and enveloping the room, even at a low volume.   David Jackman / 10inch DAVID JACKMAN & PHILIP SANDERSON - 'Terrain' 10" (Die Stadt)

Two tracks from early cassette releases. Side A is an alternative version of "Terrain" by Jackman and Sanderson, originally released on the "0 Degrees North" cassette (Aeroplane 1982). With Jackman overdubbing low guttural growls on a steel strung cello and Sanderson programming coffee-percolation on a drum machine, "Terrain" is a lo-fi production that finds its companions in the work of Throbbing Gristle, Hunting Lodge, and the Broken Flag camp of noise. Side B is a solo piece by Jackman, originally released on the 'Adrift' cassette (Snatch Tapes 1981). It is similarly lo-fi with a hypnotic loop of a monochromatic guitar topped with clanging metals and samples from orchestral swells, which have been drained of all color and replaced with a swampy din. "Edge Of Nothing" was first released in a cassette edition of 5 (!) copies on Jackman’s Aeroplane imprint, and then included on the legendary “The Elephant Table Album” DLP in 1983 (feat. Coil, Nurse With Wound, SPK, Lustmord etc). Both tracks presented here are the January 2003 mixes of the original material, which was derived from variously stimulating a cymbal with bows, knuckles, loops etc. An extremely dense piece of experimental noise where (allegedly) the B side is the A side reversed.   David Jackman / 10inch DAVID JACKMAN - 'Flak' 10" (Die Stadt)

An excellent 10" release offering two diverse pieces. Side A is a heavy, densely layered drone piece comprised of harsh, grating sounds all over the sound field, but sliding from start to finish with remarkable constancy. It's a truly beautiful noise, rather like some of Jackman's earlier work as Organum. Side B is a field recording, untreated, unfiltered, recorded outdoors, with a great hiss that is very much present in the mix. This second track seems to comment on the drone piece in a way, acting as an alternative exploration of its theme. Regular edition of 400 copies.

David Jackman DAVID JACKMAN - 'Verhalte Dich Ruhig' MCD (Die Stadt)

Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. The title seems to translate to "hold you back calmly" and that sentiment certainly matches the music. Two untitled tracks spanning just over 25 minutes. Ltd x 700 copies.

Great split release from Chicago's stalwart post-Industrial ensemble Illusion Of Safety and Germany's dronecore specialist Thomas Köner.   Illusion Of Safety ILLUSION OF SAFETY - 'In Opposition To Our Acceleration' CD (Die Stadt)

"In Opposition To Our Acceleration" begins innocuously enough with tinkled chords from a pianist fractured into quaint glitches. Such aural pleasantries have been deliberately staged as a counterpoint to something far more sinister. Sure enough, a disturbed ambience settles upon the rest of the album as the playful piano tones are replaced by razor sharp piercings coupled with psychoactively eerie drones and scribbles from a microphone across a metal plate. Asmus Tietchens sent processed recordings of himself reading excerpts from two texts by E. M. Cioran. Duncan worked on and manipulated them, creating three pieces. There is little of Tietchens remaining in these abstract creations. Speed-altered voice tracks are stacked, swirling electronic sounds in the background providing proof of deeper processing. "Freih zein hoem macht..." ranks among Duncan's harshest pieces to date, while "Aber..." is more "typical" Duncan: a drone derived from the sound source but from which the sound source has been obliterated, and yet makes its ghostly presence palpable.
