David Jackman / 10inch DAVID JACKMAN & PHILIP SANDERSON - 'Terrain' 10" (Die Stadt)

Two tracks from early cassette releases. Side A is an alternative version of "Terrain" by Jackman and Sanderson, originally released on the "0 Degrees North" cassette (Aeroplane 1982). With Jackman overdubbing low guttural growls on a steel strung cello and Sanderson programming coffee-percolation on a drum machine, "Terrain" is a lo-fi production that finds its companions in the work of Throbbing Gristle, Hunting Lodge, and the Broken Flag camp of noise. Side B is a solo piece by Jackman, originally released on the 'Adrift' cassette (Snatch Tapes 1981). It is similarly lo-fi with a hypnotic loop of a monochromatic guitar topped with clanging metals and samples from orchestral swells, which have been drained of all colour and replaced with a swampy din. Regular edition of 400 copies.

David Jackman / 10inch DAVID JACKMAN - 'Edge Of Nothing' 10" (Die Stadt)

"Edge Of Nothing" was first released in a cassette edition of 5 (!) copies on Jackman’s Aeroplane imprint, and then included on the legendary “The Elephant Table Album” DLP in 1983 (feat. Coil, Nurse With Wound, SPK, Lustmord etc). Both tracks presented here are the January 2003 mixes of the original material, which was derived from variously stimulating a cymbal with bows, knuckles, loops etc. An extremely dense piece of experimental noise where (allegedly) the B side is the A side reversed. Regular edition of 400 copies.

David Jackman / 10inch DAVID JACKMAN - 'Flak' 10" (Die Stadt)

An excellent 10" release offering two diverse pieces. Side A is a heavy, densely layered drone piece comprised of harsh, grating sounds all over the sound field, but sliding from start to finish with remarkable constancy. It's a truly beautiful noise, rather like some of Jackman's earlier work as Organum. Side B is a field recording, untreated, unfiltered, recorded outdoors, with a great hiss that is very much present in the mix. This second track seems to comment on the drone piece in a way, acting as an alternative exploration of its theme. Regular edition of 400 copies.

David Jackman / 7inch DAVID JACKMAN - 'Machine Guns' 7" (Die Stadt)

A 7" that lives up to its title by the enigmatic man from Organum. Just the sound of machine guns. Not very much manipulation. The two tracks were produced using original archive recordings of the Imperial War Museum in London as a sound source. Second edition of 200 copies on black vinyl.

David Jackman DAVID JACKMAN - 'Verhalte Dich Ruhig' MCD (Die Stadt)

Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. The title seems to translate to "hold you back calmly" and that sentiment certainly matches the music. Two untitled tracks spanning just over 25 minutes. Ltd x 700 copies.

Michael Prime / VinylLP MICHAEL PRIME - 'Requiem' LP (Die Stadt)

A prolific sound composer and an active member of Morphogenesis, Prime has also collaborated with (among others) David Jackman/Organum, Jim O'Rourke, Eddie Prevost, David Toop and Adam Bohman. He's also one half of Negative Entropy (with G. Feyton of Noise Makers Fifes). "Requiem" is one of his most intense works so far and quite different from his more environmental studies. Limited edition of 700 copies on thick vinyl, in a stunning gatefold sleeve with a textured insert.

Organum ORGANUM - 'Die Hennen Zahne' 3" CD (Die Stadt)

A four track mini CD combining the never released two 10" vinyl 'Maus' and 'Die Hennen Zähne'. 'Die Hennen Zähne' opens with 'Die Kralle', actually a David Jackman track from his archive, recorded in the early 1980's. Next is the title track 'Die Hennen Zähne', a joyful noise not unlike some of the The New Blockaders / Organum material including the sound of broken glass and tibetan horns. 'Maus' is the centre piece of this mini album and typical 'old school' Organum. The album closes with the more quiet and haunting 'Kazi', a live improvisation featuring collaborator's Michael Prime and Emma O'Bong. Nice lttle 3" digipak. Ltd x 600 copies.

Organum / 7inch ORGANUM - 'Die Letzte Musik Vor Dem Krieg' 7" (Die Stadt)

"Two tracks recorded in 2003 with only a vague hint of the classic Organum sound. The drone material is there, but the sound is slightly similar to The New Blockaders, with the addition of random piano chords. On side two, there is the distorted sound of Tibetan horns added on a similar bed of sounds. It's a distinct break away from the pure Organum drone sound, with an interesting addition of new sounds that especially in 'Happy' works well. David Jackman/Organum still knows how to surprise his followers and is a remarkable conceptualist" [FdW]. Regular edition of 400 copies.

Organum ORGANUM - 'Sorow' CD (Siren Records)

"Sorow" is a new work by David Jackman aka Organum after completing the recent "Holy" trilogy ("Sanctus", "Amen" and "Omega"). "Sorow" is not an album that expands the trilogy still farther, but opens a new chapter in Organum's career. On the basis of the European organ drones and the Indian Tanpura foundation, the gentle Japanese temple bell compliments the piece. It is neither of European Middle Age by a revisionist nor Oriental music composed from a European viewpoint. Its actions are of international minimalism and "Sorow: is 'Universal Music' in the true sense of the word. Ltd x 500 copies in a stunning digibook designed by Jonathan Coleclough. Japanese import.
